DEAR TRAVELER, Think back to your last vacation. What stands out for you? For many of us, it’s the authentic experiences that are most enduring. Perhaps it was the first bite of that al pastor taco, fresh from a tiny stand in sunny Mexico. Maybe it was watching your child’s eyes light up at the sheer size of the Eiffel Tower.

TUSCANY

A highlight of my visit to Tuscany last fall was a truffle hunt I participated in. As an Italian-American, traveling to Italy is considered a rite of passage, but the focus and theme of one’s trip can be left up to interpretation. For me, that means good food and good wine. So, when I learned of these truffle hunts, complete with a black truffle-studded lunch in the Tuscan countryside, I knew this was my ultimate Italian experience. Wherever your journeys have taken you, these experiences – the very ethos of why many of us travel – forever connect us with a particular place in this beautiful world. In this issue of Connect, we’re shining a light on some of our favorite experiences that can be enjoyed in many of your favorite destinations. Go off the beaten path in Italy and experience Bologna & EmiliaRomagna as we highlight this region, home to so many of our favorite Italian dishes and specialties, in our offbeat vacations article. Tortellini, Prosciutto di Parma, Parmigiano-Reggiano and Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena are just some of the dishes you can taste and learn the history of while spending time in this delicious part of the country. Then read about a firsthand foodie experience that can only be had thousands of feet up in the Alps – dining on Raclette cheese and sipping Riesling wine. Next, we’ll head over to Antigua where we showcase five days of authentic Caribbean experiences on this incredibly romantic tropical island. You’ll also discover where celebrities have been vacationing (and how you can, too), and we’lltake you behind the scenes with the ultimate Walt Disney World ® Resort tour that lets you experience the magic firsthand. Remember, to travel is to connect. Every trip is an adventure and every trip is unique.

WHERE IN THE WORLD ARE OUR TRAVEL CONSULTANTS? NEW ORLEANS

Zigmarie Reynoso • Clifton, NJ

While NOLA is primarily known for Mardi Gras, there are so many more festivals for visitors to experience at other times of the year. My favorites are their “Jazz and Heritage” (April-May) and “Boudin, Bourbon & Beer” (November) festivals. But even if you’re not visiting during an event, there are no shortage of things to do. As a foodie with an appreciation for restaurants with Instagram-able aesthetics, there are several hotspots worth noting. My top picks are El Libre, Casa Borrega and Red Fish Grill. For activities, I recommend a voodoo tour, kayaking their famous bayous, or taking part in a light-up bike tour.

@zigventures ReynosoZ@libertytravel.com 973.470.7109

PERU

Filip Gondek • Chicago, IL

Peru is an amazing destination with a lot to offer. I’d recommend going to multiple cities — potentially on a guided tour — if you are looking for the complete experience. With so much to see, going with a group makes the sites easier to navigate. The Cusco region is perfect for people who enjoy history and nature; hiking there is a must-do for the active traveler. If you’re staying in Cusco, be sure to check out Nuna Raymi restaurant. This hidden gem serves authentic Peruvian cuisine and the dishes are incredible. @filin0311 GondekF@libertytravel.com 312.517.7297

PRAGUE

Jesse Downes • West Hartford, CT

Prague is a stunning city that can be worked into an Eastern European itinerary with ease. If you’re doing a Danube River cruise, I recommend extending your stay before or after the cruise in this historic city. You’ll always want more time here, but a minimum of three days is ideal. When in Prague, you absolutely have to see the Medieval Old Town. Make sure to immerse yourself while tasting a trdelník! This traditional rolled dough dessert can be filled with anything from Nutella to ice cream to strawberries. @j.n.downes downesj@libertytravel.com 203.680.9301

THAILAND

Gabby Correll • Allentown, PA

There is nothing quite as stunning as a southern Thailand sunset, especially after a day of kayaking through Phang Nga Bay paired with fresh coconut ice cream (served in a coconut!). Venture north and you can experience the nightlife of Chiang Mai at Zoe in Yellow. Or, opt to feel the mist of Wachirathan Falls just outside the city and take in fabulous views from the Golden Temple. If you adore animals like I do, don’t miss the chance to interact with elephants and volunteer at Elephant Nature Park. This rehabilitation center provides care for elephants, dogs, and cats while allowing them to roam free. @gabbycorrell CorrellG@libertytravel.com 610.433.9960

ASIA: MOUNT FUJI, JAPAN This symbol of Japan is an active volcano (though it last erupted in 1707) located on Honshu Island, near the Pacific Coast. Japan’s highest mountain is a breathtaking sight on its own. But experience a sunrise over its snowy cap for a truly breathtaking experience. The warm, golden glow strikes a stark contrast against the silvery surroundings.

There’s something so magical about a sunrise. Maybe it’s the way the glowing light stretches across the horizon, peaking through towering trees or reflecting off a serene lake. Perhaps it’s the uniqueness of each light display – from hazy pinks to bright orange streaks. No matter where you are in the world, each one brings the quiet promise of a new day. These are the sunrises that are worth waking up early for.

AFRICA: VALLEY OF THE KINGS, EGYPT

NORTH AMERICA: GRAND CANYON, USA

On the west bank of the Nile, near Luxor, sits the Valley of the Kings. A royal burial ground, notable pharaohs such as Tutankhamun and Ramses II were buried here. A sunrise over this archaeological goldmine is awe-inspiring, as the sun’s rays seem to reach out like an open hand. Get a front row seat for the event on a hot air balloon ride.

The immense size of Arizona’s remarkable landmark, the Grand Canyon, is only amplified by the striking beauty of a new day rising. Head to the South Rim, which is opened year-round, and watch the light reach the contours of the earth and dance across endless layers of red rock.

SOUTH AMERICA: MACHU PICCHU, PERU Set high in the mountains, this icon of Inca civilization is one of the most visited sites in the world and is renowned for its archaeological history. What makes watching the sunrise over Machu Picchu so remarkable is the way the light filters over the land, illuminating the towering stone monuments and bringing the ancient city alive in the morning mist.

AUSTRALIA: AYERS ROCK Considered sacred by Aboriginal Australians, Uluru, better known as Ayers Rock, is estimated to be millions of years old. This large, sandstone rock formation is the perfect backdrop for a stunning sunrise. The sun’s vivid, gold rays seemingly set the rock ablaze in a fiery red display.

EUROPE: STONEHENGE, ENGLAND While the origins of this prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, England, remain somewhat of a mystery, one thing’s certain. Watching the sun rise over the ring of large, standing stones is spectacular to behold. Observe the light changing when dawn breaks, casting rays across the stark, gray rocks until the entire site is engulfed in the warm sunshine.

ANTARCTICA: PORT LOCKROY This national harbor on the northwestern shore of Antarctica’s Wiencke Island is often a stop for travelers on Antarctica cruises. As the evening surrenders to the daylight, the darkness makes way for glorious sunrises. The blue-hued icebergs glisten in the light and snowcovered mountains somehow appear even more majestic.

At Turner’s Beach, you’ll find bathroom facilities as well as a bar for burgers and seafood. by 4x4. Here, you’ll find a quiet retreat to regain your center, and serene waters perfect for snorkeling. According to Travel Consultant Amanda King, Dickenson Bay is one of the best stretches of stands on the island and offers excitement with water sports, glass-bottom boats, and souvenir shops. “Dickenson Bay is the longest beach on the island,” says Amanda, “and Ana’s on the beach is a cool hang-out. It can get very lively.”

DAY 2: RAYS OF SUNSHINE AND THE OCEAN Sail upon the calm, crystal-clear waters surrounding the coral reef, home of the stingrays. “The swimming with the stingrays tour is amazing because you are in the middle of the ocean,” says Amanda. “[The stingrays] are not held captive. Gently touch, feed, and photograph these friendly stingrays, and interact with other local marine life including crabs, lobster, shellfish, and starfish. Finish the day with a refreshing rum or fruit punch. DAY 3: SWEET AND SUNSET Praised as the “world’s sweetest,” the Antigua black pineapple has the same appearance as the Hawaiian pineapple but retains its a dark green skin even when ripe. Found in only a few places outside of Antigua, this delectable treat must be on your list of things to taste. Grab a bite on your way to Nelson’s Dockyard, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with stone warehouses, nature trails, and museums.

Afterwards, join the Shirley Heights Jump Up, a party with live steel band music, a cookout, and spectacular views. Watch as the sun slowly sinks below the horizon, creating a dramatic sunset over nearby Guadeloupe and Montserrat. DAY 4: EXPLORE THE ISLAND Colonial cottages, 18th-century courthouses, and harborside public markets welcome you to St. John’s, the capital city of Antigua and Barbuda. Immerse yourself in the city’s vibrant life or explore Antigua’s countryside on the Fig Tree Drive with fresh-fruit stands, tropical landscapes, and vibrant farmland. This evening, sail off into the sunset on a romantic catamaran. Munch on delectable appetizers and sip exotic cocktails as the sea becomes ablaze, looking like liquid fire. Sway to the rhythms of Caribbean sounds or simply steal away, finding a quiet spot to be alone together.

BAJA CALIFORNIA

ATTRACTS THE STARS LIKE ACTUAL CALIFORNIA Celebs flock to Cabo and the west coast of Mexico like they do for the glitz and glam of Hollywood. If a tropical paradise in Mexico with possible celeb sightings is what you’re looking for in your next vacation, look into staying at some of Los Cabos’ most luxurious resorts. In the past, these celebrities have been seen kicking it on vacation in Cabo: Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Hart, and Brad Pitt. Also, in nearby Punta Mita by Puerto Vallarta, another stunning location right across the Gulf of California, Jennifer Lawrence hung out with pals to celebrate a friend’s birthday, staying at the St. Regis Punta Mita..

A FAMOUS TIME IN

MAUI

Clint Eastwood put it perfectly when asked about Maui: “What’s not to like?” Good question, Mr. Eastwood. Many celebrities (and, of course, non-celebrities) agree. Maui, a honeymoon haven, is really great for any kind of trip when looking for island paradise, whether it’s a family getaway or romantic retreat. Perhaps the most famous person totally obsessed with this Hawaiian island gem is the one and only Oprah. She likes it so much, she bought over 60 acres of land and built her dream house. And if Maui has Oprah’s stamp of approval, you know this island is the real deal. 26

FRENCH POLYNESIA IS FIT FOR A PRESIDENT

The Islands of Tahiti are truly incarnations of paradise on earth, and they were the perfect spot for perhaps the most stressed out man on the planet – Barack Obama. After his presidency, Obama headed to Richard Branson’s Necker Island before making his way out for some solitary time at The Brando, an ultra-luxury resort on the sun-soaked atoll named Tetiaroa, which was partly owned by the iconic actor Marlon Brando. With only 35 spacious villas, the resort is definitely exclusive, expensive, and incomparably serene. Obama spent his time getting started on his memoir, and former first lady Michelle Obama met him there to soak up some paradise as well. Pippa Middleton and Leonardo DiCaprio are also fans of this one-of-akind resort, and Margot Robbie was surprised to run into Ellen DeGeneres and Obama in the weight room during her honeymoon. THE BRIDGE TO SUPERSTARDOM IN

THE BAHAMAS

For a nightly rate around $25,000, the Bridge Suite at Atlantis Paradise Island has become the stuff of legend. Suspended between Atlantis’ Royal Towers 17 stories high, the Bridge Suite is still one of the most elegant and extravagant hotel suites in the world. The views from this suspended angle are actually unheard of, something you can’t believe until you live it for yourself, looking out over the stunning ocean and marina. 12-foot, floor-to-ceiling windows help guide the view. The room also comes with its own seven-person staff, a 22-karat gold chandelier, and a piano in the living room. Understandably, this attracts celebrities and luminaries looking for some R & R. Those who have stayed: Michael Jordan, Bill Gates, Celine Dion, and – yes, her again – Oprah. Rumor has it that the suite always has a years’ long wait, so if you have the dough, make that reservation now! See – celebrities are just like you and me. GO BEHIND THE SCENES AT WALT DISNEY WORLD RESORT Visit any of Walt Disney World ® Resort’s four parks in Orlando, Florida, and you’ll find unexpected surprises around every corner. But did you ever wonder how it all comes together? With a Backstage Magic tour, you can go behind the scenes – literally – and see how the magic is made. This 7-hour tour (yes, 7 hours!) starts and ends in Epcot. First, you’ll meet your tour guides. These funny, entertaining personalities will be with you every step of the way. This tour is available for ages 12 and older. There is an incredible amount of walking as well as time spent listening to interesting stories, so little ones likely wouldn’t have the patience for this tour anyway.

If you’re amazed by the marvelous handiwork and incredible detail of the costumes you see at Disney World, then you’ll love visiting Creative Costuming. Go inside the workroom where you’ll observe Disney designers in action, creating and tailoring wardrobes for Character, show, and parade performers. KEEPING IT CLEAN If you think there’s nothing exciting about laundry, you haven’t seen Walt Disney World ® Resort’s Textile Services – one of the largest laundry facilities in the world. Here, millions of pounds of laundry are washed each week. You’ll see it up close and personal, plus learn how Disney does its part to be efficient and environmentally conscious. LUNCH BREAK No day at Walt Disney World ® Resort would be complete without a delicious and memorable meal. Lunch at Whispering Canyon Café is included with your tour. You’ll enjoy an all-you-can-eat, family-style barbecue meal at this Wilderness Lodge restaurant – known for its silly (and sometimes sassy) antics by Cast Members.

When your group has been assembled, you’ll set off on your journey – on foot and via a bus stocked with snacks and bottled water. Wireless hearing devices are provided to ensure no one misses the many nuggets of Disney information that are about to be revealed. Know that you’re going to see some seriously confidential stuff, so no photography or recording of any kind is allowed in the backstage areas. You may snap away in any non-backstage area, though, and there are special photo opportunities offered to you throughout the tour. You’ll also receive a souvenir at the end of the tour.

Some islands have become more renowned than ever, so if you’re in search of that tropical oasis that has so little crowds, it feels like you’ve found your own secluded paradise, head for Grenada. Although you’ll definitely see a few other people on the Spice Island’s most popular beach Grand Anse, the two-and-a-half miles of soft sand is so spread out and dotted with only small restaurants and resorts that you’ll never have to fight for your spot in the sun. Best of all, the resorts are luxe, the landscape is lush, and the markets have all the locally grown ingredients you need to make your very own personalized bottle of spiced rum.

IN THE WORLD’S MOST VISITED DESTINATIONS From the moment we discover our love for travel, our wanderlists start growing with iconic cities, islands, countries, and landmarks. As we make our way around the world, many travelers start to crave even more unique experiences, to head off the beaten path, and make their friends, family, and followers say, “Huh, I never thought about going there before.” Thankfully, you can continue checking icons off your list while also taking the road less traveled. Some of the best offbeat locations are right in the heart of the world’s most visited destinations, and we’re going to tell you where to find them.

ITALY Italy is one of Europe’s most visited countries for numerous reasons, including renowned cities, historic sites, and most importantly, the food. If fresh pasta, rich sauces, and excellent wine are high on your priorities, then follow your palate to Bologna, Italy’s true capital of cuisine. From lasagna to Ragu alla Bolognese (a slow-cooked meat sauce), many Italian favorites were created and perfected in this city and the surrounding EmiliaRomagna region. Bologna is a treasure favored by students and true foodies, but the rest of the traveling world has yet to catch on, meaning restaurant reservations aren’t necessary, and visitors can chow down on tortellini and Mortadella sausage with a laid-back local crowd. It’s also directly between Florence and Venice, making it the perfect stop for a day or two of feasting when hopping from one iconic city to the next.

Riviera Nayarit

MEXICO To the east, you’ll find the Caribbean beaches and Mayan sites of Cancun and Riviera Maya. To the west, there’s party town and celebrity-studded Los Cabos. But if you stay on the West Coast and head south, you’ll discover the beachside paradise of Riviera Nayarit. As Puerto Vallarta’s secluded, equallyas-beautiful cousin, Riviera Nayarit’s laid-back beach towns and resort areas have been a long-time favorite vacation spot for Mexican citizens. With seafood specialties galore and hidden beaches on the Marietas Islands, plus a rise in high-end hotels and shopping districts, this gem has all the right ingredients for an exotic Mexico getaway that will have all your friends back home wondering how you stumbled upon such a fascinating destination.

HAWAII Many consider Hawaii the ultimate paradise, and we can’t help but agree. The USA’s Aloha State is bursting with unique culture, famous beaches, and eco-adventures, and every island boasts its own personality and experiences. About 7 million people visit every year, so if your picture of paradise entails an island relatively untouched by tourists, Hawaii has two that fit the frame. Just a stone’s throw off the coast of Maui, Lanai and Molokai have gone to great lengths to preserve their history, nature, and culture for the ultimate, authentic Hawaiian experience. Legend says Molokai is the birthplace of hula, and it’s home to Papohaku Beach, Hawaii’s largest, most pristine stretch of sand. And seemingly laid-back Lanai offers the perfect balance of relaxed seclusion and action-packed eco-adventures. Both have only a handful of hotels to keep the visitors at a minimum, meaning you’ll be mingling with mostly locals.

Lanai & M olokai

Whether you’re cruising the canals of Venice or sipping on margaritas in Puerto Vallarta, hidden gems are just around the corner waiting to be explored, as long as you have the wanderlust to step on and off the beaten path. You never know. You might just discover the travel world’s next “it” destination and have the bragging rights to say you did it first. CALL 1.888.571.0604 | LIBERTY TRAVEL

e tt e l c Ra IN SION

When it comes to the world’s great foods, Switzerland calls dibs on chocolate and cheese. And when it comes to cheese, there’s nothing like authentic Swiss raclette. Here's one Europe travel expert's take on a truly unique dining experience.

Just an hour’s drive from Montreux and Lake Geneva, the small city of Sion is the capital of Valais canton. Nestled in Switzerland’s peaceful Rhone Valley, it’s shadowed all around by the breathtaking and picturesque Pennine Alps, including the famed Matterhorn. It was here – atop one of the peaks overlooking Sion – that I was introduced to raclette, a semi-hard cheese made from the fresh, unpasteurized milk of cows that have grazed on the kind of alpine pastures that you see on Switzerland’s famous calendars. This brief episode in a memorable summer spent in Switzerland involved a cliff-hanging car ride up a very steep mountain, where we met up with a friend-of-a-friend, the engineer who had built the world’s highest-elevation dam, located just a few miles away. Pierre was a truly gracious host and eager to present us with something he was sure we wouldn’t find back in the USA. Several thousand feet above the valley, Pierre’s modest, classic chalet was picture-perfect, right down to the stone fireplace where a jumble of logs flickered and flamed. (It was August and, yes, it was snowing.) Our host and his lady friend poured us glasses of Riesling – perhaps the ideal accompaniment for raclette – and bade us to relax while they prepped for dinner.

The setting was fantastic, and the best was yet to come. They brought out a hibachi-sized machine, plopped it in the middle of the table, and plugged it into a wall socket. It was a raclette grill, made up of exposed heating elements (like an electric broiler) with a grilling surface and a rack upon which the half-wheel of cheese sits with its flat side facing the heater coils. The emphasis in raclette dining is on relaxed and sociable eating and drinking, not unlike a fondue party at which each guest waits his turn to serve themselves. As the heated coils glowed red and the cheese melted, each of us in turn took the spatula-shaped raclette knife and scraped off the drippy, sizzly, golden cheese and spread it onto a chunk of fresh baguette. The experience was a revelation. Raclette’s flavor can be characterized as acidic, milky, nutty, sweet. But, much like trying to describe a piece of music as “soaring” or “moody,” none of these words can actually give you an idea of this taste treat’s distinctive flavor. You just have to be there. In other words, contact your local travel consultant. There are restaurants all around the country that specialize in raclette and fondue. How lucky are the Swiss?

A PEEK INTO

THE FILMING LOCATIONS

OF PEAKY BLINDERS Sport a flat cap and feel like a Peaky Blinder on your next visit to England. These filming locations for the hit show will immerse you into northern England, from Liverpool to Manchester. Check out some of the sights that the show uses to resemble old London, Birmingham, and other locations back at the turn of the 20th century.

BIRMINGHAM

An Entertaining Show with a Dark History Though we don’t condone the behavior of the characters on Peaky Blinders (mostly gangsters up to no good), the show still resonates with modern audiences almost as much as Game of Thrones or The Sopranos (also with a bunch of characters up to no good). And the buzz around it is still growing. Based on a real gang from the late 19th and early 20th century, the eponymous show is rich in period detail, making the filming locations that much more interesting. Shot on location in some cases, there are plenty of places to visit. For fans, the locations will definitely be recognizable.

STREET IN DUDLEY

WHERE TO VISIT BLACK COUNTRY LIVING MUSEUM This location is actually closer to actual Birmingham, in nearby Dudley. Every season of the show has scenes filmed here, mainly because it’s a “living museum,” meaning it’s completely preserved to look like the era. Though there are several major scenes that were filmed all over the location, Cillian Murphy’s swaggering walk past all those firing furnaces and iron work as lead character Thomas Shelby took place here as well, in front of the Blacksmith Forge. There’s also a Peaky Blinders shop to get you into the spirit and possibly even into the era yourself, with products ranging from old-school looking beard oils, care kits, thematic key rings, flannel grandad shirts, to those “Peaky Style” flat caps.

VICTORIA BATHS, MANCHESTER This is a cool place to visit regardless if Peaky Blinders is the reason you come. Described as a “water palace” back in the day (it opened in 1906), it originally provided luxurious and spacious facilities for bathing and swimming, decked out with stained glass, terracotta, extravagant tiles and mosaic floors. It was a staple of Manchester and now a historical site. For the show, incredibly, it was used as a horse fair. They utilized the gorgeous space and threw sawdust down on the ground and brought in horses. One issue production designer Grant Montgomery ran into, however, was the height of the doorway. “One of the biggest challenges we faced,” he said to BBC, “was that the entrance was just six feet, so we could only bring horses in that would fit through the door!”

NEWBY HALL & GARDENS

NEWBY HALL & GARDENS

CAP IT ALL OFF

Scenes here took place all over, including the cellars, billiards room, stunning gardens, and the statue gallery. Originally built in the 1690s, the house has been kept immaculate. A remarkable place to visit whether a fan of the show or not, it has given the show an incredible backdrop for several scenes. Colorful and extravagant 18th century style interior decoration makes for a wonderful walk-through, and outside you’ll get to explore the gardens.

Liverpool has also taken its love for the show up a notch by opening the Peaky Blinders Bar in the iconic Cains Brewery Village.

ADMIRAL GROVE, LIVERPOOL Where Ringo Starr actually grew up, and where the fictional Shelbys live, Admiral Grove is a quintessentially British street that any fan will recognize. The long, straight road is lined on both sides with continuously connected apartments, giving the street a flat symmetry that translates great on film.

Opened just in December 2017, the bar is a must for fans – and, more importantly, an open invitation to put on those dapper period threads, and those now iconic newsboy caps the Peaky Blinders were known for wearing. Covering two floors, the bar is a big space, and it’s perfectly on premises that date back to 1850, adding to the décor, which also features large Peaky Blinders images and other period details. It’s the ideal spot to fully embrace your Peaky Blinders obsession, right next to many of the filming locations in Liverpool. The bar really embraces a 1920s feel, offering cocktails and other beverages from the era – though the characters on the show tend to take their drinks straight – but the place is also known for its Pilsner Urquell unpasteurized tank beer, delivered directly from the brewery for the freshest pour. As great as London and Oxford are, head up north next time to explore fascinating cities like Liverpool and Manchester. And if you need an excuse, call on the Peaky Blinders. They’ll make you an offer you can’t refuse.
