TRAVEL WELL

WHILE DOING GOOD

9 IN 2019 PLACES YOU HAVE TO SEE

DEAR TRAVELER, As we kick off the new year and head into 2019, I find myself reflecting on the reasons why our customers travel. The new year brings new dreams, new places, and, ultimately, new experiences. And there is no better time than at the start of the year to begin planning. This issue of Connect focuses on two very special and personal reasons that inspire some of our customers to travel – honeymoons & destination weddings and the growing trend of voluntourism.

MALDIVES

Honeymoons have long been one of the first ways that customers experience the service and travel packages we offer at Liberty Travel. There isn’t a more romantic or more dreamed about trip than your honeymoon. And, with the help of a Liberty Travel consultant, our honeymooners jet off to a dream destination where they’ll experience their very first moments of married life. Growing in popularity, destination weddings give couples the ability to bring their family and friends along to witness them say their vows in paradise. What could be more memorable than an oceanfront ceremony followed by an elegant reception under the stars? “Your Ultra-Specific Guide to Destination Weddings” will answer all your questions. Not getting married this year, but still looking for a great reason to travel? Voluntourism is the name given to a wide variety of ways that travelers can give back to the destinations they visit. In this issue, we spotlight three travel partners that have made sustainability and social responsibility a key part of their resorts and overall travel experiences. But doing good doesn’t stop there. When traveling, look closer at the many opportunities available to you where you can make a difference.

PORTUGAL

Whatever your reason for traveling in 2019, find inspiration with our nine must-see destinations. Worth the extra effort needed to get there, the Maldives are perfect for honeymooners looking for ultra-luxury and idyllic beauty. Portugal – my personal favorite – also made our list. The seafood, the wine, and the beautiful coastline make this European gem a top choice for travelers. Wherever your 2019 travels might take you, we hope that Liberty Travel can be there along the way.

WHERE IN THE WORLD

Did Our Travel Consultants Celebrate? COSTA RICA

Samantha Scerbo • Bay Shore, NY

My husband and I had been to a lot of all-inclusive beach destinations together and knew we wanted something different for our honeymoon. We wanted a place that was still easy and relatively quick to get to, so we could maximize our one-week honeymoon, but still offered a lot of activities off the resort grounds. We chose Costa Rica for those exact reasons. The resorts in the Arenal area are set in the rainforest, secluded and luxurious, and perfect for honeymooners. There is an abundance of day tours, includig hot springs, zip lining, volcano hikes, waterfalls, and wildlife viewing. The highlights were our private plunge pool villa, an incredible night storm that lit up the rainforest and made the animals sing, monkeys on our balcony, and standing in awe of Arenal Volcano, but truly the best part turned out to be the people – each so proud of their country and their “Pura Vida” way of life that they can’t wait to share with you!

CANCUN, MEXICO

Briana Villei • Delran, NJ

We chose Breathless Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa for our May 2019 wedding because we wanted to have an adults-only, luxury experience that would also be a lot of fun for ourselves and our guests, and Breathless is the perfect place for that. We also stayed there before and loved it. We felt the service, food, rooms, and overall experience was wonderful. I felt the value of what we were getting couldn’t be matched. I’ve always wanted a destination wedding, even before I worked for Liberty Travel, and I’m thrilled to see how smooth and uncomplicated this experience has been so far. I might be the only bride I know who hasn’t been stressed during the wedding planning process! VilleiB@libertytravel.com 609.386.6006

When it comes to filling up passport pages, our Liberty Travel consultants are always up for the task. And when that upcoming trip is their very own destination wedding or honeymoon – well, they know exactly what they want. From secluded island gems to culture-rich destinations, here’s where our experts chose to celebrate.

TULUM, MEXICO

Stephanie Garcia • New York, NY

We chose to get married in Mexico because it is one of our favorite places, and with family travelling from New Zealand, Colombia and the United States, we knew it was the perfect middle point! The people, the food, and the service were, of course, second to none. Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa is a lot different than other properties. The reason why we chose this resort is because it has a rustic feel to the décor and we knew it would be an amazing backdrop for our wedding pictures.

DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES & MALDIVES

Amanda King • Woodbridge, NJ

When it came to choosing our honeymoon destinations, we knew the Maldives would be perfect after the wedding because we wanted an exotic place where we could relax, enjoy the beach, and have fun with a lot of water activities. However, we also knew we don’t like to sit for too long so the combination of exploring a beautiful new city and culture made Dubai the perfect addition to our trip. We also found adventure and luxury in both destinations which were a must! We had so many awe-inspiring moments on this honeymoon. I wouldn’t have changed a thing!

A marine paradise in the western Caribbean, the three Cayman Islands are surrounded with coral reefs and sparkling blue waters. Whether you swim with stingrays, dive down to the coral reefs, or simply relax on one of the white-sand beaches with your favorite cocktail, the islands offer something for everybody. The biggest of the three islands, Grand Cayman, is home to Seven Mile Beach, which is known for its gorgeous clear waters and soft, coral sands. On Little Cayman, travelers will find peace and quiet on the secluded beaches. And, at just 12 miles long, Cayman Brac is small, easy-going, and charming. Cayman Islands

TO VISIT IN 2019

Whether you’re looking to experience the Aurora Borealis, bask on a beautiful beach, or discover world culture, the nine places to visit in 2019 offer a range of experiences that appeal to diverse travel styles. From the otherworldly landscapes of Iceland and Scotland, to the cultural treasures of Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Bangkok, or beyond to the remote islands of the Maldives, these destinations reveal vast northern landscapes, colorful marine sanctuaries, and storied antiquities. Every year, new destinations join the global travel conversation. Here are nine new places to explore in 2019.

Iceland

Iceland offers the epitome of winter travel; visit Reykjavík, and experience Iceland’s version of hygge (the trending Danish concept of indoor winter leisure), discovering cozy eco cafés fueled by geothermal heat where you can curl up with a book and a warm sweater, or soak in the ever-popular steaming waters of the Blue Lagoon. Leave the city limits, traveling the northern coastal roads across lunar volcanic landscapes illuminated by the Aurora Borealis, or take the famous Golden Circle route and see the breathtaking Gullfoss Waterfall. Visit Vatnajökull Glacier to explore the haunting ice caves, known for their blue roofs of ice, formed entirely by frozen meltwater— naturally-sculpted works of art. Gullfoss Waterfall

Yala National Park

TO VISIT IN 2019

Sri Lanka Vietnam

Halong Bay

Vietnam has undergone a renaissance, opening new luxury resorts and boasting several recent additions to the UNESCO World Heritage list. Natural treasures on the list include the towering islands of Halong Bay and the incredible biodiversity of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. Sites of cultural significance include the Imperial Citadel in Hanoi, the Citadel of the Ho Dynasty, Hue, Hoi An Ancient Town, and the My Son Sanctuary.

Maldives

From wild experiences to cultural treasures, Sri Lanka offers a little of both. At Yala National Park you can take a safari in search of wild elephants and leopards, and end your ride at a 2,000-year-old Rock Temple of ancient pagodas and shrines. Combine your vacation with service by volunteering at an elephant sanctuary, giving back to these magnificent creatures and the people who work to conserve them. Whether you’re looking to meditate at the Dambulla Cave Temple or rebalance at a beautiful seaside resort, Sri Lanka is stunningly diverse.

Wat Phra Kaew

If you’re looking for a remote island escape, the Maldives offers a unique balance of nature, spiritual experiences, and exploration. Enjoy an Ayurvedic spa treatment and let time-honored wisdom and teachings help you rebalance your mind and body. In a world where coral reefs are increasingly threatened, the Maldives remains one of the few places on earth where you can dive this underwater wilderness. Maldives

Bankok Travel to Thailand for the world-class cuisine and discover Bangkok’s sacred temples. Admire Wat Arun’s intricate spire made of Chinese porcelain and colored glass. Enter Wat Traimit to admire the magnificent Golden Buddha. Then, visit Wat Phra Kaew, known for its Emerald Buddha, crafted from a single block of jade. Lisbon offers 16th century history in the Belém district, iconic trams that navigate steep picturesque streets, and a flourishing culinary scene. With some of the best weather in Europe, seaside Porto delivers old world charm, beaches, and cafés.

Cayman Islands

Lisbon

If you’re looking to dive in the Caribbean, the Cayman Islands offers some of the most pristine diving spots in the Caribbean Sea, and the world. Costa Rica has been discovered, and it’s no wonder—it’s home to some of the best surf beaches in the world, beautiful cloud forests, stunning volcanoes, and a culture that embraces conservation. A vacation in Costa Rica can take you from the depths of the forest, to the heights of an active volcano, to the sunsets of a pristine beach—all in one week. Surfers flock to Tamarindo for its perfect waves, and sun-lovers can find a stretch of sand to bask in the sun. Poas Volcano National Park

Scotland Beyond Edinburgh’s stately Royal Mile and breathtaking castle on a hill, you’ll find Scotland’s wilder side. From the new Snow Roads Scenic Route through the highest elevations of the Cairngorms, to the St. Kilda islands of the Outer Hebrides, an UNESCO World Heritage Site accessible only by boat, northern Scotland can indeed feel like the edge of the known world. Just a train ride north toward Skye takes you through otherworldly landscapes, charming villages where the signs are written in Gaelic, and where rugged coastlines await those who ride to the end of the lines. The Cathedral is located just off Derek Walcott Square, a park named in honor of the Nobel Prize-winning poet. LIBERTY TRAVEL | CALL 1.888.571.0604

What are the advantages of a destination wedding?

Do people have to stay at the same hotel as me?

Especially if you’re going to an all-inclusive resort, a destination wedding can be less costly than a normal ceremony and reception. Many hotels will include a free honeymoon suite or other upgrades when you book a group room block, and some even offer a free wedding package. There will most likely be fewer guests, so your costs will be lower since you’re not purchasing as many favors, invitations, or centerpieces. Most hotels have a dedicated wedding coordinator, so you don’t have to worry about spending your weekends researching florists or organizing a late-night bridal assembly line to put together centerpieces. You’ll choose from packages with different color schemes and layouts, and then they’ll make sure it happens.

If your guests want or need to stay at a different resort, your travel consultant can certainly book them at another location. Be aware, however, that many hotels charge a fee for day passes and may have a policy of maintaining a minimum number of guests staying on property. Don’t worry, though. Your travel consultant will know this information and relay it to you and your guests early on to ensure there are no surprises.

How do I decide where to go? Choose your destination first, and then narrow it down by hotel. Look at a hotel’s ceremony sites before you even start looking at their wedding packages. Sometimes a gorgeous location can make up for the fact that they don’t have the napkin color you wanted. And vice-versa: you may get a free wedding package, but a ceremony on a public beach could be a deal breaker. You likely won’t be visiting the venue until you arrive for your wedding, so rely on travel consultant recommendations and suggestions from friends who’ve been to the area. How do I actually get married? Are the rules the same as back home? Laws about getting married vary, so your wedding coordinator will give you information about any special requirements. Some locations require couples be on the island for a few days before their ceremony while others require health certificates or paperwork. How do my guests book their rooms? And flights? This is another thing your travel consultant will handle. When a large group of people travel together, they qualify for a “room block.” When a hotel is notified that a group will be taking up a large amount of space, they set aside the number of rooms that are needed. When you know how many guests will be attending, contact a group travel consultant. They’ll organize everything and deal directly with the hotel on securing deposits and special requests.

How do I get my dress to my hotel? Don’t ship it. If you need to send favors or place cards, then check with your hotel about mailing them to your wedding coordinator. But try to carry your wedding dress with you so there is as little chance as possible that something happens to it. Your dress may have to be searched by airport security, and you can ask your TSA agent to put on a new pair of gloves before touching it. A lot of planes have an onboard coat rack, but you might have to keep it in your overhead compartment. Bring a heavy-duty garment bag or proper travel box just in case. What happens when the wedding’s over and it’s time for our honeymoon? You’ll obviously want to spend time alone with your new spouse, but it can be awkward to gracefully separate yourself from your guests. You can’t order people not to extend their trip, so consider arranging for an upgrade to a private preferred club for privacy. Some couples book their honeymoon at a separate hotel nearby to experience more of the area. What if there is a change of plans? You’ll have a lot on your plate, so book through a travel consultant so there’s someone on the ground in case something goes wrong. This is the person you’d call if your aunt misses her flight or someone in your group wants to change rooms. Also, discuss travel insurance options for this most important event. Keep in mind though, and make sure your guests are aware, that this insurance would apply only to you and not to your entire group. Each guest must purchase their own travel insurance to be covered. Most importantly — congratulations! Enjoy every minute of your engagement and let a travel consultant help plan your dream destination wedding.

Stroll charming seaside towns terraced over the beautiful ocean, with quintessential Italian style. With 13 seaside villages, there are a range of accommodations, but the gem of the Amalfi Coast is Positano, known for its luxury resorts, stunning private villas, charming old-world cobblestoned streets, and incredible cuisine.

MAKE FOOD FIRST AND FOREMOST

These four restaurants spanning the world are expensive, legendary, highly-ranked (even by Yelpers), and are totally worth planning a trip around. Like any wellthought out trip, however, you’ll want to plan ahead. These seats are tough to get. World Rankings below are based on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants™ list.

OSTERIA FRANCESCANA Where: Modena, Italy

What’s it Near? Modena is definitely off-the-beaten path a bit, which actually adds to its luster. As described in an episode of “Chef’s Table” featuring the restaurant’s head chef, Massimo Bottura, the restaurant was discovered by a food critic who ended up in Modena by chance while trying to avoid terrible traffic. The restaurant is a little more than a two-hour drive to both Milan and Venice. Dinner per Guest: $$$$ 2018 World Rank: #1 What’s the Big Deal? Considered the best restaurant in the world, the marvel of Modena is worth the trip to Italy for the bragging rights alone. Bucking trends of traditional Italian cooking, the style almost put Bottura out of business at first; the locals were not quick to embrace new-age concoctions like Bottura’s dish The Crunchy Part of the Lasagna. As he told Forbes Magazine, “Every single kid in Emilia-Romagna knows it is the best part of the lasagna – the rest is for adults!” His dessert Oops I Dropped the Lemon Tart also takes this nontraditional approach, creating a dish that literally looks like a happy dessert disaster of deliciousness on your plate.

NARISAWA

Where: Tokyo, Japan What’s it Near? Located in a wealthy, less touristy area of Tokyo, you’ll still be close enough to the heart of the city to explore vibrant Tokyo at your leisure following one of the most memorable meals of your life. Dinner per Guest: $$$$ 2018 World Rank: #18 What’s the Big Deal? Innovative is an understatement. Your plates here will almost look like terrariums, so dense with detail and colors of nature that it’s almost like looking at a reflection of Japan itself. Celebrating the topography of the country – covered in forest and surrounded by water – the dishes are beyond beautiful to look at and beyond tasty and fresh. The menu is seasonal and uses sustainable ingredients from the surrounding regions creating an immersive meal into the culture and one’s senses. 34

ARPÈGE

BLUE HILL AT STONE BARNS

What’s it Near? Right in the heart of Paris, this three-Michelin star restaurant (the highest honor) is nearby everything Paris has to offer. You’ll be particularly close to the Musée d’Orsay, a museum that houses some of the world’s most revered artworks, featuring paintings by Renoir, Van Gogh, Monet, and others.

What’s it Near? Just 45 minutes north of Manhattan, this farm and restaurant is the perfect quiet respite from the city. Explore all New York City has to offer, but nothing will probably match the experience at this fine dining restaurant that puts new meaning into farm-to-table dining.

Dinner per Guest: $$$$

Dinner per Guest: $$$$

2018 World Rank: #12

2018 World Rank: #11

What’s the Big Deal? French cuisine is considered the model for high-end, fine dining, and you can’t go wrong with this contemporary French restaurant that holds every accolade a restaurant could ever want. Chef Alain Passard owns several farms and the restaurant is known to serve fresh vegetables daily to the point where they never even have to see the inside of a refrigerator. This is your stop for classic Haute French cuisine and is worth being the centerpiece of your Paris vacation. The chef has banished red meat from the menu, so this spot is also a vegetarian’s dream.

What’s the Big Deal? Chef Barber’s not a fan of the phrase “farm-to-table”, though he’s a true pioneer in the philosophy behind it, preferring “seed-to-table” or “local” more, as explained to The Guardian. Obviously changing by the season, the menu will feature some of the freshest produce and succulent meats in the Hudson Valley, with an unrivaled fine dining setting to match. The property is also home to Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture, so a meal here is a constant educational journey. Though every flavor will wow, maybe nothing matches Barber’s attention to bread. The Barber Wheat is literally a whole-wheat bread he invented from the seed up. He does this with other nutrient-rich ingredients as well, urging his farmers with the radical notion of farming for flavor, not quantity.

Where: Paris, France

Where: Pocantico Hills, New York

If pairing paradise with this level of cuisine is more up your alley, there are several restaurants that mix Michelin-level dining with a tropical location as its backdrop. • Legendary Spanish chef Martín Berasategui, who holds Spain’s most Michelin stars at eight, has restaurants throughout the Caribbean and Mexico. His restaurant Tempo is located at Paradisus Cancun, Gastro Bar at Paradisus Los Cabos, and Passion at Paradisus Palma Real Golf & Spa Resort and Paradisus Punta Cana. • For a taste of two-Michelin star chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten in Los Cabos – his restaurant Jean-Georges in New York City is a favorite – stay at luxurious One&Only Palmilla where you’ll find his restaurants SEARED and Suviche. • Two-Michelin star chef Sidney Schutte is also in the region with his restaurant Cocina de Autor for a locally-infused tasting menu to match the views and tropical surroundings at Grand Velas Los Cabos. You can’t go wrong when consulting The World’s 50 Best Restaurants™ list or the Michelin Guide. Just know that it’s not weird to start off your vacation planning by picking a restaurant first, and everything else second. These meals will be dinner and a show.

PRO TIP:

If you’re looking to snag a seemingly impossible-to-get reservation, stay at a highend, glitzy hotel and tell your travel consultant to speak with the hotel’s management way in advance; they might just have an in.

TRAVEL WELL WHILE DOING GOOD

With a revolution of sustainability and social responsibility across a range of sectors and industries – from large to small – it’s not surprising that travel has also been positively affected. Travel companies – from leaders in touring to immaculate island resorts – are upping the ante when it comes to giving back. And, in some cases, putting you – the traveler – to work. Which is to say, giving you the choice to take part in voluntourism.

Most major resorts and tour companies are in some way advocating for sustainability, voluntourism, and social responsibility, but these companies are raising the bar. While you travel the world, these leaders of the industry are helping the world become a better place. Next time you go away, think about going away to give back.

LUXURY & VOLUNTOURISM WITH ANANTARA

GLOBUS® CARES

Discover paradise on another level while making true change. Anantara’s 365 Days of Good Deeds program means a day doesn’t go by without them creating positive change in the world. Since their inception in 2001, Anantara has created projects to benefit the environment and local communities – and they’re doing more than ever today. Partnerships with guests, locals, and staff has molded a harmonious relationship and unique community.

Globus® has partnered with countless foundations and companies that are dedicated to making the world a better place. In fact, they even use environmentally friendly motor coaches during their tours, so everything is consciously thought out. Some of their partnerships include: • Tourism Cares: Dedicated to preserving and restoring some of the world’s most beautiful regions, like Yellowstone National Park and The Galápagos Islands, this partnership also helps fund the ChildSafe Network to support the welfare and advancement of children in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

While they lift luxury to new heights across the map – with extravagant resorts & spas throughout Thailand and in Maldivian paradise – Anantara Resorts also lifts the concept of voluntourism and social responsibility to new heights.

Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort

• The Wildland Firefighter Foundation: Celebrating the unsung heroes who are helping to preserve our national parks – firefighters – this organization helps to protect some of the Earth’s most majestic areas. By simply taking a GoParks! Tour with Globus®, travelers will make a contribution to the foundation. • South African National Parks Honorary Rangers and The Lion Recovery Fund: Travelers taking African tours with Globus® will also make a contribution to these groups who are preserving Africa’s beauty and wildlife, always at no additional cost. With Globus®, traveling literally means giving back. Countless other partnerships – including one with the Make-A-Wish® Foundation – proves that Globus® understands that travel is to give back while having a fantastic vacation. TRAVEL WELL WHILE DOING GOOD

GRACE BAY CLUB TURKS & CAICOS IS COOKING UP GOODNESS IN EDUCATION To stay in Caribbean luxury while making a huge difference, look no further than Grace Bay Club in Turks & Caicos. This quintessential luxury Caribbean getaway is your backdrop as you give back. The resort’s community foundation is constantly improving the livelihoods of the locals, thanks to the generosity of the staff, guests, and partners. Providing assistance to underprivileged schools to enhance educational opportunities, the resort’s foundation is all about the future of Turks & Caicos.

Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas

The resort has even adopted five primary schools on the islands. To start off every school year, they deliver backpacks brimming with school supplies for the local students. Furniture and other equipment also gets donated. With its focus on education, it only makes sense that the resort gives out some serious scholarships – the Grace Bay Resorts Community Foundation provides scholarships to students that show real promise, a passion to succeed, and mainly to students who care about the local community as much as they do their academics. The Little Chefs program is also a unique and creative way to give back while advocating education. This program trains talented and passionate youngsters from the island for a career in the restaurant and hospitality industry. With internships, high schoolers from the islands learn how to cook up some phenomenal plates, all working towards continuing their studies in the culinary arts. Little Chef students even get to work side-by-side with celebrity chefs at the Caribbean Food and Wine Festival, literally having them learn from the best.

While you’re lounging in the pinnacle of paradise, you can also be helping out with these amazing projects that Anantara has started: • • • • •

Mangrove planting The establishment of an eye clinic in the Maldives Island cheetah breeding program Coral adoption programs Rare turtle release programs

All of this is not made possible without the generosity of the guests, so donating while living in total luxury here is a great way to give back while knowing your money is in good hands. From a focus on educational and preservation initiatives, to unrivaled voluntourism opportunities, these travel leaders continue to set the standard for what it means to advocate great causes while simultaneously always advocating for total travel fun.

Opportunities for guests staying with Anantara include activities like reef rehabilitation and teaching English to locals. Plus, the Dollars for Deeds program lets guests get involved by simply donating one dollar for each night of their stay, which the hotel then matches. This dollar-for-dollar initiative has already helped fund cleft palate surgeries, housing, medical insurance, schooling for children, elephant healthcare, and conservation efforts to local communities around the world. The Green Growth 2050 Global Standard uses a range of criteria to recognize which hotels and resorts around the world are legitimately environmentally-friendly and sustainable, and Anantara currently has 34 hotels and resorts that have been awarded with a Green Growth certification. They are also the first major hotel brand to fully eradicate plastic straws at every single one of their properties in Asia, with goals of eradicating plastic straws entirely in other regions as well. Behind the scenes, they also have foundations doing incredible things for the world, ranging from elephant conservation to the Heinecke Foundation that helps less fortunate children in Thailand. While the resorts advocate for environmental actions like water and energy conservation, it somehow never impedes on luxury; in a way, all this goodness makes it all that much better.
