LW Consumer Behaviour What trend references are young females using to define their own style identity? This study addressed the trend references females aged 18-21 use to define their own style identity examining the difference between those within further education to those within employment. To conclude the study, I investigated the trend preferences of both groups by exploring their fashion icons, purcasing behavioural habits and media references. The impact of their friends and celebrities was undeniable and vital to the discussion as to where the females drew their style inspiration from. Surveys were conducted with a total of 60 students and 40 employees and focus groups with a total of 8 students and 5 employees to explore the roles of their purchasing behavioural habits, their influences, their dress codes and their celebrity icons. The results found that females aged 18-21 refer to their friends and celebrities as the individuals who govern their dress codes. Social media plays an important role in their day to day lives as this is where they source their trend references from. When looking at advertising images and fashion in magazines, the females showed clear signs of being fascinated by the appearance of celebrities and their ‘perfect’ image created by the media. However, influences from parents and colleagues started to show among those aged 21 as their maturity levels had increased. To conclude, I found that employees were the individuals who were more aware of their own style identity. They understand how to individually portray their own personal style preferences whilst still abiding by given guidelines. Throughout this study, my ability to communicate through written content positively grew. I wrote clearly and succinctly tailoring my language to my audience whilst explaining my findings distinctly.

LW The Missguided Magazine Throughout this project my interpersonal skills thoroughly progressed. I learnt to negotiate and make decisions independently whilst managing my time efficiently taking responsibility for the completion of each component.

Concept Missguided are an online fashion brand whose success has thoroughly increased since their debut in 2009. Articulating that the consumer is at the heart of everything they do I produced a bi-monthly magazine for the brand The aim of the magazine is toachieve continuing profitable growth by increasing engagement with their consumer.

LW The Content

The magazine abides by the essence of the brand delivering young fresh and aspirational content. To ensure the magazine attracts the interest of the consumer, I covered content from brand developments and promotions to celebrity style columns and seasonal trends including fashion, hair, beauty and fitness Furthermore, I interviewed Missguided’s stylist Sara and model Emily to give the consumer an insight into the brands identity.

LW The Layout I collaborated with Graphic Design student Laura Tomlinson for the design and layout of the magazine where we worked closely together creating innovative layouts. Throughout the magazine, art and fashion are closely drawn together using colours to separate different sections of content from fashion to beauty and fitness. To increase consistency we used the same fonts as those on Missguided’s website which are Courier New and Helvetica Neue.

LW The Trend The magazine consists of one trend, Intrepid. Intrepid is created through colour clashing, bold blocks, shapes and stripes to protrude a powerful and unexpected visual perception for Missguided. I styled the model myself where I drew inspiration from pop artists using playful colour combinations to bring an intense bundle of energy to the magazine.

The photoshoot was carried out within a studio by photography student Chloe Dunn. Makeup artist Bethan Kiddle created some striking looks on model Katie Dinsmore and together we produced some exceptional images. I also composed three accessory pages where I styled and grouped each product shot to ensure the accessories appealed to the preferences of the consumer.

LW

Components Further components include the packaging of the magazine which has a minimal and sleek design. The magazine was placed within a slip and was to be delivered to the consumer within an a4 envelope to ensure it is kept flat upon delivery. For the promotion of the magazine I created consumer emails and Social Media posts for Missguided to directly target their consumer. Furthermore a marketing plan, promotional plan press pack, project management blog and research file was also produced.

Combining exclusive fabrics and designs, the aesthetics of the merchandise pushes the boundaries of modern men's tailoring in a contemporary and youthful direction.

I pulled all aspects of the show together myself by contacting clothing traders to feature their merchandise on the catwalk alongside sourcing female models. Further roles included planning the event schedule and managing time efficiently whilst being under pressure to ensure the show ran perfectly. I styled the models covering decades within the 20th century and wrote briefs for the makeup artist and hair stylist to ensure the models appearances reflected their covered decade.

“Libby Windle, a fashion student from Huddersfield University organized and styled the fashion show - a ‘vintage catwalk extravaganza’ and her artistic eye pulled together some of the key looks from across each decade of the 20th century starting from the 1920’s. Nothing could be a more fitting birthday celebration for the charming Picture House, which opened in December 1920 as a luxury cinema” (Kate's Kloset, Exposed Magazine)
