For William, who relentlessly cheers me on no matter what and for my cats, the fuzzy space heaters that never leave my side.

Preface When I first started working on this book, it seemed like something that I would do “one day.” It was something, Future Sarah would accomplish and something Future Sarah could finish. There were evenings where I stared at unfinished pages, blankly scrolling up and down aware of what needed to be done but before I knew it, an hour had passed and time was wasted. Somewhere, Future Sarah was getting frazzled. If it wasn’t for the warm blanket of encouragement of my better half, it might not have ever gotten completed. Despite my cries of “but it isn’t a book book,” he cheered me forward and things progressed. I thank the old gods and the new every day for his support. Now, here it is completed and out into the world like a little alcoholic baby. However, there are a lot of other people who not only helped make this book possible but also made my life better in so many ways. My parents and family, I don’t know what I would do without them. Also, Candace, Morgan, Bernadette, Claudine, Anna, and all my other work colleagues, if no one has told you lately, you are truly fantastic. In writing this book, which I know is not a book book, I have figured out that there is so much to life that you cannot predict and so much that you cannot leave up to outside forces. You can want all your life to be the next Kurt Vonnegut Jr. or (Insert Personal Hero Here) but sitting around with that desire won’t make anything happen. Sometimes, you have to start at the bottom to end up at the top. Most of us don’t wind up where we thought we would but who says that is a bad thing? -S

Recommended Equipment CO CK TAIL

SHAK E R

A must have for any drink maker. The optimal shaker is the three part shaker that has a built-in strainer in the lid along with a cap. However, as long as you have a way to strain your mixtures, any shaker will do.

CO R KS CREW

Always good to have on hand for recipes that include wine.

J I G G ER

Precise measurements are incredibly important for cocktails and using a jigger is the way to do it. (It is the item that looks like two pyramids attached at the apex.)

BL E N D E R

For any recipe that requires electric mixing of ingredients, a blender is key although in a pinch you can use a hand mixer.

CO CK TAIL

STIC KS

Basically toothpicks or spears, cocktail sticks hold fruits or olives in cocktails that require it. (Preferably buy ones that look like tiny little swords if you have the choice because they are way more fun.)

BARS POONS

Whatever bar spoon you buy, just make sure you get one with a long handle. These are used to stir cocktails as well as make layered drinks.

M U D D L ER

Used to mash fruits, herbs, and/or spices, such as mint, in the bottom of a glass to release their flavor into the drink.

F RU IT

K NIF E

Some recipes require fruit peels either as garnish or as an actual ingredient. A fruit knife is a must-have.

S T R AW S

You probably notice that in most bars your cocktail is served with a thin cocktail straw. For your own bar set up, these will make your drinks feel more authentic and fun!

I C E

A good supply of ice is essential. Several recipes call for ice to be used in the shaker so make sure you have it on hand ready to use. I recommend an ice ball maker for cocktails that require ice after the drink has been made. 12

Choosing Your Alcohol R U M:

There seem to several different names for rum. White (or clear) rum is also known as “light” or “silver.” There is also dark or amber rum as well as the much stronger “black” rum. What makes rum perfect in cocktails is that you can choose any kind you want. They all mix well and rum comes in a variety of flavors, including fruity ones that are great additions to drinks. Note that bottles labeled “overproof” means that they have an alcohol content that is much higher than the standard.

T E Q U I L A:

Tequila primarily comes in two forms: Silver (or white) and Golden. The clear tequilas are traditionally used for mixing. You would not want to choose a tequila that has been labeled an “anejo” tequila. These have been aged much longer and have lost of most of the blue agave flavor.

V O D K A:

When choosing the type of vodka for your mixed drink there are generally four types to consider: Russian, Polish, or vodka from the United States and Europe. The difference between them can affect both the way your drink goes down and how you feel the next morning. Polish and Russian vodkas can be taken straight up and are best for shot drinks, while U.S. and European vodkas are better for mixing. You may notice that Polish vodka also has a very intense aroma while Russian has more pronounced taste that can be cutting.

W H I S K E Y:

Whiskey is a fickle drink because there are so many different types. When choosing for mixing, Irish and Canadian brands are smooth and mild. Malts tend to be best used for shots and are best taken at room temperature without mixing. Bourbon and Sour Mash work best with fruity drinks while Scotch whiskey can be used with tangy flavors. 13

D R A M A S Television dramas like “Boardwalk Empire” or “Game of Thrones” can be, well, dramatic. The heart-pumping stories tend to keep you on the edge of your seat with your knuckles clenched. Sometimes, the best you can do is sit back with a cocktail and let the waves of the on screen character’s turmoil wash over you. Each of the cocktail recipes in this section represent either the drama series they are paired with or a character within the show. Take these gripping portrayals of humanity in stride with one of these recipes and a good friend or lover during a great night of television on the couch.

Boardwalk Empire

“Boardwalk Empire” is an HBO series that takes place during Prohibition: a time when tensions run high as alcohol is outlawed but that doesn’t mean it no longer exists. Main character Enoch “Nucky” Thompson is a prominent bootlegger and politician in Atlantic City who is more than rich and more than corrupt. He runs things. (And by things I mean almost everything.) When in his office or in his nightly social club, he is often seen drinking the popular 20’s cocktail known as The Sidecar. Others can be seen drinking The Prohibition Cocktail, made with easily accessible ingredients during the time period. 16

The Sidecar INGREDIENTS: • 2 oz. Cognac • 1 oz. Cointreau • 3/4 oz Fresh Lemon Juice INSTRUCTIONS: Shake ingredients well in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain and pour into a chilled cocktail glass or champagne saucer.

The Prohibition Cocktail INGREDIENTS: • 2 oz. Plymouth Gin • 1/2 Tsp. Apricot Brandy • 2 oz. Dry Vermouth • 1 Tsp. Orange Juice • Twist of Lemon INSTRUCTIONS: Shake all ingredients with ice except the lemon in a cocktail shaker. Strain and pour into a cocktail glass. Add twist of lemon. 17

Breaking Bad

AMC’s “Breaking Bad” stunned audiences as Walter White went from lovable chemistry teacher into the manipulative killing machine known as Heisenberg. His addictive and impressive pure meth known as Blue Sky took him to the top but also proved his undoing as it brought him to the attention of the DEA. This margarita recipe is inspired by his iconic meth formula. Not only is it colored blue but it also featured cracked blue ice resembling the blue sky meth itself. It is perfect for both a hot summer day and binge watching “Breaking Bad” for the millionth time, which we both know you are going to do. 18

Blue Sky Margarita INGREDIENTS:

• 4 Lime Slices • 3 Tablespoons Coarse Sugar • 1/2 Cup Tequila • 1/2 Cup Chilled Lemon-lime Soda • 1/3 Cup Limeade Juice • 1/2 Cup Blue Curacao For Blue Ice Chips:

• Water • Blue Food Coloring INSTRUCTIONS: In a blender, combine the ingredients; cover and process until blended. Using lime slices, moisten the rims of margarita glasses. Set aside lime slices for optional garnish. Sprinkle sugar on a plate; hold each glass upside down and dip rim into sugar. Pour into prepared glasses. Garnish with reserved lime slices. Serve immediately. For the Ice Chips: Pour water onto a baking sheet, creating a ¼" thick layer of water, and leaving plenty of room so that the water doesn't spill out. Squeeze 4 drops of blue food coloring on top and mix around with a spoon until even. Add more drops until you achieve a strong blue color (6-8 drops, typically). It will lighten up a bit as it freezes. Place the sheet in the freezer on an even surface and let freeze until ready to serve (At least 2 hours). When ready to serve, remove the baking sheet from the freezer. Smash sections of The ice sheet and then carefully use a fork to further pry pieces apart. Drop in to margarita for adding “Breaking Bad” style.

Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey

Neil deGrasse Tyson is more than just the Internet’s hero. He is a brilliant astrophysicist, author, and friend of Bill Nye the Science Guy and Carl Sagan. By hosting “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey” Tyson has helped spread knowledge of the infinite and amazing depth of the universe to viewers all around the world. Tyson has helped make the world a better place. In honor of his series, The Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster is based on the galaxy hoping novel “The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy” while the Milky Way Punch recipe is cold and comforting like space (I’m guessing.) 20
