It is my great pleasure, once again, to welcome you to the LIC Arts Open. It’s hard to believe that 5 years have passed since a seemingly innocuous conversation led to the founding of an arts festival that is growing in size and significance every year. We are back with a fantastic program of exhibits, events and our annual Open Studios weekend, with hundreds of artists and performers taking part, and scores of venues participating. Please take the time to visit as many places as you can, but I would definitely recommend a visit to the Falchi and Factory LIC buildings on 47th Ave (7 to 33rd St). We are placing hundreds of works in two adjacent buildings that represent how our previously “tired” warehouse properties are being given a new lease on life. In truth, there really is something for everyone, who will find the scope and breadth of our fifth festival truly amazing. I would like to take the opportunity to thank an incredible team, especially the “core” players; we happy few – Carolina Penafiel, our Events and Exhibitions Coordinator, has been doing a phenomenal job, and our new Art Director, Madeline Maser, has delighted with fresh re-designs of the logo and booklet. Thanks also to Social Media Coordinator David Bromley and Advertising Manager Samoil DeLima. I am also grateful for the wonderful support from our Sponsors, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer and the myriad businesses, companies and members of this great community. Once again, we have all come together to celebrate the arts in LIC, and to welcome you to LIC Arts Open 5!

May 13, 2015 Dear Friends, Congratulations and warm greetings to all at the 5th annual Long Island City Arts Open! It is a tremendous privilege to serve the burgeoning community of artists in Long Island City that has helped to develop this area into a destination for tourists and local residents alike. As the supporting arts and culture throughout the City. It is with particular pride that I am able to support such a remarkable event in my own district. To all those who have come to Long Island City for this fantastic event, I extend a warm and heartfelt welcome. This area is home to one of the largest collections of gallery and studio space in the City, and the Long Island City Arts Open provides us with a chance to celebrate the artists who use this space as well as the work they produce. This event proves year after year to be a tremendous contribution to the community of Western Queens to the benefit of residents, visitors, art aficionados, business owners, and artists themselves. Thank you to all the artists, volunteers, supporters and participants who make this such a consistently wonderful event. I am truly excited to be a part of celebrating this exceptionally talented artistic community. I wish to extend a special congratulation to Richard Mazda and all of the volunteers who make this celebration what it is! Sincerely,
Jimmy Van Bramer Majority Leader Cultural Affairs Chair

NEW SHOES FOR 47 TH Its no secret that much of Western Queens is undergoing an incredible renaissance and that our warehouses are being repurposed, redesigned and rebuilt, breathing new life into areas that were falling into dereliction. Perhaps many are still not aware of the incredible transformation that is taking place on 47th Ave with two of our largest buildings, The Falchi Building and Factory LIC now featuring wonderful completely rejuvenated interiors and exteriors. Both of these building started life as warehouses for two department stores, Gimbels and Macy’s. Anyone who is still holding an outdated, outmoded opinion of Queens as a dormitory borough where people live in a cultural and architectural desert only needs to visit our exhibitions in these two great building to experience a Queens that will blow your mind with amazing art and architectural vistas. Make these buildings a definite destination on your LIC tour. You won’t be disappointed.
The Falchi Building
3 1 - 0 0 4 7 T H AV E
Built in 1922 as a warehouse for the Gimbels department store chain, this building is nearer completion of its redesign by owners Jamestown who are also behind the unique Chelsea Market building in Manhattan. Like Chelsea Market, The Falchi is attracting a unique array of tenants from artisanal donuts and juice companies to being the headquarters of Coalition For Queens and other media savvy outfits. We are so grateful to Paul Kelterborn and Jamestown for once again generously donating a large amount of space for our pop up galleries which this year includes the Ground Floor, Atrium, third and fourth floors. You will find amazing art in so many places in an historic building that is almost a work of art itself. FalchiBuilding.com
The Factory LIC
3 0 - 3 0 4 7 T H AV E
The Atlas group are in the middle of a wonderful renewal of what was once a Macy’s warehouse. As you enter the lobby, the changes are spectacular compared to its previously dated incarnation. We are very pleased to partner with Jay Fehskens and Atlas to provide art on the Ground Floor where we will convert 6000 sq ft into a stunning pop-up gallery. There will be two other large exhibitions on the 4th floor in two huge locations along with events on the tenth floor which has stunning views of the city. TheFactoryLIC.com

The play revolves around Pirate Pete, a lovable rogue on a mission to find his beloved runaway parrot, Polly (who prefers pancakes to boring old birdseed). Pete decides it can’t hurt to pick up some buried treasure as well, to help make the month’s rent. Armed with an endearing crew of misfits like Jolly Roger (the insufferably happy second mate) and Miroslav, the Czech mate (get it?), Pete embarks on a journey complete with songs, sword fights, and plenty of audience interaction. Court Square Studios Amongst the many hidden gems in LIC is the area’s newest independent film and video studio, Court Square Studios. Owners Mauricio Arenas and Hernan Guerrero have taken over a former construction school building on 44th Rd, which offers 5000 sq feet of raw space for all kinds of audio/visual projects that has the unique ability to allow vehicles to drive directly on to the sound stage. In the past few years, LIC’s larger film studios such as Silvercup and Kaufman Astoria have been part of a huge upswing in New York film production. Court Square Studio’s Cinematographer and Studio Director Mauricio Arenas embodies a free thinking approach to not only his projects as a Producer, but this is reflected in the philosophy of his studio. This year Hernan and Mauricio have generously allowed us to
create a screening room, live stage for events, a huge wall with over 100 pieces of art by multiple artists, as well as a separate performance art space and an individual exhibition. Court
Square Studios will also be the venue for a jazz concert on Firday evening, a rock gig on Saturday, and our amazing Closing Party which will feature our silent auction, a country band, comedy show, and a special concert version of Hair, all washed down with Lagunitas!
