It seems impossible to think that our 5th Festival was a year ago and that another LIC Arts Open is upon us. Every year presents fresh challenges and this year’s preparations have been very tough but what always sustains the team is the palpable excitement and passionate commitment of the artists, sponsors and community. We hope you enjoy the incredible amount of art on display at over 65 venues and spaces. The LIC Arts Open always features pop-up galleries and this year we have several Outdoor exhibitions, rooftop concerts, large scale murals broadening the range of work on offer. Walk the labyrinthine corridors of Reis emerge to 22nd Street to see the dramatic murals of 43-01 21st [Former Wills] or perhaps visit the Diego Salazar Roof Deck to catch some jazz before hitting the exhibition trail. In another of our signature locations at the Falchi and The Factory you will find over 100 artists on display in 6 different spaces in the two buildings. There are individual galleries such as W3, Resobox and Jeffery Leder, which will reward the determined art explorer. I have such a great team but I want to give special thanks to Carolina Peùafiel who joins me again for the second year as Festival Events and Exhibitions Co-Coordinator, and, of course, to the entire LIC community and our sponsors. Richard Mazda Executive Director, LIC Arts Open

The reach of the body is felt in the wind; lips shall not speak evil. The potter interacts with the clay knowing the risks of grains slipping between the fingers to possess a past form. Whether for affluence or failure, there is no greater delight and despair than this infernal trial that might bring tears or jubilation in a body that might never rest, and yet it is created from a humble—and magnificent—clay paste. To know that there is little meaning behind all this, after all, it being just a body of water and bones; we would break the coiling loops.

RESIDENTS Opening Reception 6-9pm

Annual open-call exhibition for emerging artists with a focus on the production of new work. Filling the building’s lower level, the exhibition will feature new commissions that offer new ways of considering sculpture and further understanding of the discipline and how it can intersect with other mediums. sculpture-center.org

Eleventh Street Arts is proud to present RESIDENTS. This group exhibition showcases new paintings, drawings, and sculpture by the nine artists-inresidence of Grand Central Atelier. Together their work demonstrates the varied ways in which traditional academic training can inform contemporary art practice. Featuring work by Anthony 15

Go Slowly, See Miracles Opening Reception 6pm

Emerging Collectors Series Opening Reception 6-9pm

Known throughout Queens for her explosive poetry, performance, and curatorial work, this is LIC native Audrey Dimola’s first art installation. ‘Go Slowly, See Miracles’ is an immersive amalgam of hidden treasures and alcoves of memories, a cross between a lost boy’s wilderness hideaway, a secret grotto in the mind, and the gritty intersections of love, identity and nostalgia. It features a variety of never before seen mixed media art pieces, 3D poetry, found objects, sound and more- exploring wild spirituality, descents into darkness, reclamation and annunciation. The work is specially presented in this form for LICAO 2016. On view during festival. audreydimola.com

The Experimental Space at Reis Studios is launching the first of a series of shows that will put on display the Emerging Collectors Series that want to create a bridge between Collectors and Artists. Harboring around 200 artists, Reis studios has the not so easy task of selecting only a few. May 20th to June 5th

Anatomy describes the heart as the body’s engine room, responsible for pumping life-sustaining blood through the entire circulatory system. It is also used to refer to a person’s character, or the place within a person where feelings or emotions originate. Courage, determination, hope, hate and love seem to be the main guests housed in one’s heart. It has been used in art for centuries to represent love between two people. In El Corazón, each piece represents the passion and dedication to what I love to do best. daniel-valle.com

Intallation by Richard Wilson Opening Reception 6pm

This is not 3-D cinema or an Olympic fireworks display, it is a more intimate form of escape generated with mundane and novelty items. This meeting gives rise to impossibly futuristic objects, situations and, ultimately, images that attempt to question the fabric of contemporary spectacle. At stake is the character of our attention and wonder.

This exhibition will depict the symbiotic yet forgotten relationship between Art and Architecture. The work of Laini Nemett illustrates the deconstruction of the built environment through large scale renderings of various spaces. The work of stained glass artist Ellen Mandelbaum creates spaces of serenity by using watercolors to create the illusion of painted light. Amie Gross Architects will feature some of our work showing the constructed environment and buildings as sculpture and form. On view May 20 - 22nd. 12-6pm

Beautiful Object: Upsetting Still Life Opening Reception 6-8pm

May 13 - June 5, 2016 Hours: Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun 12-6pm What constitutes a still life, and the myriad forms it can take, are the subjects of Beautiful Object: Upsetting Still life, a show of contemporary still life painting and sculpture. On display are the fruits and crockery typical of the genre, but for the nine artists in the exhibit, quotidian objects are combined with elements of portraiture and landscape. Artworks include objects chosen for their sensual or symbolic qualities contextualized in ways that confound any preconceived notions of what comprises a still life. Curator, Patrick Neal will be in the gallery the weekend of May 21-22 to greet visitors. jeffreyledergallery.com

Top To Bottom Mural Project On view 24/7

Joe LoGuirato is a native New Yorker who has had several one-person exhibits, and has participated in many group shows throughout the metropolitan area. Some of his recent work involves sidewalk art that depicts various endangered species in a fossilized state. The intention is to create an awareness of animals that are commonly appreciated in zoos and wild-life parks, but nevertheless are near extinction.

Arts Org NYC launched Top to Bottom, a public mural project, in September 2015 at 43-01 21st St, a three story, half-a-city-square block building in LIC, Queens. Top to Bottom features a wealth of style, color and expression from international street art legends to local maestros. 50 artists from 14 countries and all NYC boroughs have contributed. The work flows from rooftop to street, all sides and angles. This inspired the project name, a phrase for a graffiti piece covering the height of a train. Shadow Migration on view 24/7

Shadow Migration exhibits steel animal silhouettes installed throughout the park. Klemperer investigates species threatened in the 20th century, now rebounding, showing up in our backyard. These shadows are essences of worldly form, fleeting and fleeing. Migration, both animal and human, increases as manmade changes force movement to more hospitable regions. These silhouettes are punctuated with cutout shapes of countries around the world. Each animal is a melting pot, bearing countries on its body represented in Queens—the most diverse community in the world. Nations represented record where that animal once thrived, inviting contemplation of natural and human diversity now. On view at Court Square
