A place to remember Lichfield District and Staffordshire are home to some of the country’s most stunning war memorials, and are a wonderful setting to visit old friends, relatives, and memories.

The National Memorial Arboretum is a unique haven of peace, contemplation and hope for the future. Nestled on the edge of the National Forest, it features over 100 memorials of national significance. One of the most stunning is the Armed Forces Memorial, that pays tribute to those who have died whilst on duty, or as a result of terrorist action since World War II. Set in 150 acres of wooded parkland, visitors can enjoy and learn about the trees and their surroundings, and reflect upon their special symbolism. Nearby Cannock Chase is home to celebrated war memorials, including the German and Commonwealth War Memorials, and a memorial to victims of the Katyn massacre, which took place in Poland in 1940. Preserved below the Katyn Memorial are phials of soil from both Warsaw and Katyn forest.

The cathedral is also home to the St Chad Gospels, which are a manuscript copy of the gospels of Matthew and Mark, and the early part of Luke. Written in Latin, and dating from around 730AD, they are on display in the Chapter House from Easter to Christmas. The Staffordshire Regiment Museum in Whittington, is packed full of stories and tales about soldiers of the Staffordshire Regiment. From weaponry and memorabilia dating back over 300 years, to a full scale World War I trench, the sights, smells and sounds of our wartime history are brought to life at the museum.

Lichfield Cathedral is one of the oldest places of Christian worship in Britain, and the burial place of St. Chad, the Anglo Saxon missionary. It is also the only medieval cathedral in the country with three spires.

Three Top Treasures Lichfield Cathedral Home to the Lichfield Angel & St Chad Gospels. National Memorial Arboretum A haven of peace. The Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum A fascinating story. www.visitlichfield.co.uk

Defining heritage and culture Lichfield was created in the 1st century when the Romans built a fort at Letocetum (now known as Wall).

In 2006, excavations in the Nave of the Lichfield Cathedral uncovered remains of a Saxon church and the Lichfield Angel, believed to be part of a shrine to St Chad, built by Bishop Hedda in 700AD. Today you can view the Lichfield Angel in the cathedral, along with other treasures including the St Chad Gospels. In the late 18th century Lichfield was alive with academic

discussion and became recognised as a leading intellectual and cultural centre, thanks to the influences of Samuel Johnson, Erasmus Darwin, David Garrick and members of the Lunar Society. Today culture is firmly at the heart of city and district life, with the Lichfield Garrick, the Lichfield Festival, Lichfield Arts and the much loved Lichfield Mysteries, taking centre stage.

Lichfield Festival by Drew Thompson

In around 672AD, following the death of St Chad, Lichfield was reborn as an ecclesiastical centre in honour of the saint’s shrine. This was a thorny and bloody period of history, with many battles marking the transition from Paganism to Christianity. It is believed that around this time the stunning Staffordshire Hoard, reputed to be ‘the equivalent of finding a new Lindisfarne Gospels or Book of Kells’, was laid down in the district, possibly after a battle between warring factions. To find out more about the hoard, visit the Tourist Information Centre in the Lichfield Garrick and pick up a copy of the Hoard Book. £1 from every sale contributes towards keeping this breathtaking treasure within the region.

To soak up some of our proud heritage, visit The Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum on the Market Square, where the famous writer of the first English dictionary was born and lived. Or, explore the home of Erasmus Darwin, the grandfather of Charles Darwin, and leading doctor, inventor and scientist, and find out about his life and learnings. To delve further into the city’s history, pay a visit to the Lichfield Heritage Centre, or pick up a copy of our heritage trail from the Tourist Information Centre. To sample a little bit of modern culture, make sure you book your seats at the Lichfield Garrick, one of the region’s best loved theatres. www.visitlichfield.co.uk
