A summary of Lichfield District Council’s Strategic Plan 2008 – 2012

Where we’re heading Where next in 2009 - 2010... People

Place

Cut anti-social behaviour linked to pubs and bars by up to 5%, and host over 150 activity sessions in Chasetown and run 10 community projects across the district – from workshops to action days.

Help people get the money they need by processing benefits claims even more quickly.

Help even more people in villages and rural areas to get out and about with our community transport scheme.

Help prevent more people from becoming homeless and work with partners to help people find homes that are right for them.

Help people get back into work or education through a variety of training schemes.

Get more children active with our Splashtastic scheme, on our playschemes, and through our new play rangers scheme.

Improvement

Hot on the heels of West End success, continue to increase income and boost the reputation of the Lichfield Garrick as a theatre of regional and national acclaim.

Build strong links with nearby councils to deliver joint cost effective and high quality services – from recycling and business development with Tamworth Borough Council, to health and safety and mapping services with Stafford Borough Council.

Invest over £600,000 in our partners to help deliver improved local services, from citizens’ advice to the Lichfield Festival.

Invest funding generated through new developments in the city centre and across the district.

Make our recycling service even greener and deliver a better service to our residents, by introducing a new blue bin recycling service.

Maintain top quality retailer interest and continue to develop our plans for shopping developments in Lichfield City & Burntwood town centres.

Ensure our district is developed in a sustainable and positive way in the future, by finalising our local development framework. Keep our district free of dumped litter and rubbish by continuing our hard line on fly-tipping and littering. Invest over £3.9 million Heritage Lottery and Big Lottery funding in the restoration of our historic city centre parks. Redevelop the park on Shortbutts Lane to feature improved natural play areas, a bmx track, new seating, improved planting, better playing pitches and more.

To find out what we’ll be doing next read our Strategic Plan. It explains our priorities for the next four years and how these will improve our services in more detail. Visit www.lichfielddc.gov.uk/strategicplan or call 01543 308000.

We’re committed to enhancing the general quality of life of the people who live in, work in and visit our district. We do this through the promotion and improvement of economic, social and environmental well being. This means sustainable development must be at the heart of everything we do.

Being a top performing council is a continual journey. It’s about having a clear direction, knowing where we’re heading, being able to see and avoid obstacles, and planning well.

Planning our journey

Let us share our vision At the heart of what we do is a determination to offer a service and to provide facilities people can be proud of. We’re committed to working together with local residents over the next four years to reinforce Lichfield District’s position as an economic, cultural and tourism centre of national significance. The next four years will see challenges for Lichfield District as we strive to achieve our vision. As one of the lowest charging district councils in the country, the pressure is always intense to balance our budgets. In the coming years this will be even more acute, as we take on extra responsibilities laid down by Government, while receiving less central Government funding.

Cllr. David S. Smith

Leader of Lichfield District Council cllr.davidsmith@lichfielddc.gov.uk

Our ambitions and top priorities We will work through a joint effort to build: a sustainable, clean and safe environment, a thriving economy, a good place to live and a better quality of life. We plan to achieve our ambitions by delivering top priorities that are centred on people, focused on place and doing things better. To do this we work with a wide range of partner agencies, including the police, fire service, voluntary services, NHS trusts, community groups and many more.
