The Staffordshire Hoard – a short history
In the summer of 2009, a farmer's field in Hammerwich Parish, just outside Lichfield City, caught the world's attention. An amateur metal detectorist had discovered the world's largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold. As archaeologists excavated piece after precious piece, they realised that the Staffordshire Hoard would transform our understanding of Anglo-Saxon history and culture. Comprising of more than 3,500 objects and fragments, the hoard contains stunning examples of Anglo-Saxon craftsmanship - golden and jewelled decorations from battle weaponry and exquisite religious artefacts.
5
www.visitlichfield.co.uk
Now world famous, the Staffordshire Hoard is much more than a collection of Anglo-Saxon war booty. It’s the legacy of craftsmen whose artistry fashioned precious metals and gemstones into incredibly detailed sword hilt fittings, helmet parts and other items. It’s also the story of kings, religious men and their warriors, who carried these pieces into battle, who fell, and were later stripped of their finery.
Visit the Staffordshire Hoard Mercian Trail in 2012 To celebrate the region's proud Anglo Saxon history, permanent displays of the Staffordshire Hoard are planned across the region, as part of the Staffordshire Hoard Mercian Trail from as early as 2012:
Visit Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery: The exhibition charts the history of AngloSaxon Britain, and includes Staffordshire Hoard items and interactive displays. Find out more at www.bmag.org.uk
Lichfield Cathedral: The cathedral is the burial place of St Chad, the Anglo-Saxon missionary and is the only medieval cathedral in the country with three spires. In 2010,
Visit the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery: Around 80 artefacts from the Staffordshire Hoard are on permanent display. A new feature display is planned to coincide with the Olympics. www.stokemuseums.org.uk
Lichfield Cathedral unveiled a new display in the Chapter House of the St Chad Gospels and the Lichfield Angel. Dating from around 730AD, the St Chad Gospels are older than the famous Book of Kells. The Lichfield Angel is an 8th century sculpted panel of the Archangel Gabriel that was discovered under the nave of the cathedral in 2003. To compliment these exquisite Anglo-Saxon treasures, a small display of Staffordshire Hoard items and replicas is planned for as early as 2012. Keep up to date at www.staffordshirehoard.org.uk or call the cathedral on 01543 306100.
