Welcome to Lichfield District
Welcome
We’re nestled in the heart of the beautiful Staffordshire countryside, just a short drive from England’s second city - Birmingham.
With a bustling bijou city, picturesque countryside, and fun for all the family, Lichfield District is a fantastic destination for a day out, city break or short getaway. If you love history you are in for a treat from our awe inspiring cathedral and Anglo Saxon gold, to Samuel Johnson’s birthplace and Erasmus Darwin’s ground breaking discoveries. Or, if it’s excitement, adrenaline and adventure you seek, you’ve picked the right destination, as the thrills and spills of Drayton Manor Park are just a short drive from the city. And, for the younger guests, the delights of Thomas, Percy and friends are just waiting to be discovered at Thomas LandTM.
Welcome

Heritage, culture and tours
Heritage, culture and tours
Our heritage, culture and tours
Throughout the ages, Lichfield has played a pivotal role in defining the country’s culture and identity. In 2009 the world famous Staffordshire Hoard was discovered just outside Lichfield. Lichfield Cathedral’s Chapter House now houses a small collection of the treasure, alongside the stunning Lichfield Angel and the St Chad Gospels - an 8th century gospel book that dates from 730 AD and is older than the Book of Kells. Open everyday, the exhibition details our proud Anglo-Saxon history and the passage from paganism to Christianity that helped shape our country. In the late 18th century Lichfield City was a hotbed of academic discussion and became recognised as a leading intellectual and cultural centre, thanks to the influences of Samuel Johnson, Erasmus Darwin, David Garrick and members of the Lunar Society. Soak up some of this proud history, at the home of Erasmus Darwin, the grandfather of Charles Darwin, and leading doctor, inventor and scientist. Or, spend time exploring the life of Samuel Johnson at the Birthplace Museum on Breadmarket Street, where the famous author of the ‘Dictionary of the English Language’ was born and lived.
To experience over 2,000 years of our city’s history, visit the Lichfield Museum at St Mary’s in the Market Square, and whilst you’re there pick up a copy of our Heritage Trail from Tourist Information. For culture with a modern twist, visit the Lichfield Garrick - one of the region’s leading theatres boasting a full programme of dance, art, drama, comedy and more. For a calm, contemplative day, head to the National Memorial Arboretum. Nestled on the edge of the National Forest, it features nearly 300 memorials of national significance. On the eleventh day of the eleventh month, at the eleventh hour, a shaft of light illuminates a memorial dedicated to all those who have given their lives for our country since World War II - the Armed Forces Memorial.
Don’t miss Get a bird’s eye view of the city with Lichfield Cathedral’s new Tower Tours open from April (see page 22).

As Lichfield Cathedral gears up to welcome back the famous Herkenrode windows, try your hand at stained glass window workshops (see page 22). Get an unrivalled view of the cathedral with spire climbs at St Mary’s in the Market Square (see page 22).
