I am delighted to welcome you to our summer edition of intouch – Lichfield District Council’s residents’ magazine. It’s full of news, events and useful information. In May, I was proud to be re-elected to the district council. As the Leader, I have put together a strong cabinet to steer the council through what will be a challenging time, in light of budget cuts. Turn to pages 10 and 11 to see all the new faces and many familiar ones that make up the new council. We all worry in times of economic uncertainty, but there is lots of help available. Together with our partners, we’ve set up a number of work clubs and held information fairs across the district.

With the school holidays on the way, we’re reminding parents that there is still time to sign children up to have a summer of fun at the many clubs, coaching courses and activities we’re running across the district this summer. Turn to pages 5 to 8 to find out more. Finally, I am looking forward to Lichfield Proms in Beacon Park on Saturday 3 September. Our free outdoor concert is a chance to celebrate the end of the summer as a community, while enjoying fine music, al fresco dining, a rousing sing-song and fireworks. Lichfield ‘Ye Olde Games’ Heritage Weekend Lichfield City Centre – Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 September On top of tourist attractions throwing open their doors for free, offering a whole host of fun things to see and do, this year’s Heritage Weekend includes Olympic-inspired activities on Lichfield’s Market Square and beyond. Life saver
Touring hoard Lichfield Cathedral – Saturday 30 July to Sunday 21 August Excitement is mounting as Lichfield Cathedral gets set to welcome more than 40 star pieces of the Staffordshire Hoard, as part of this summer’s Staffordshire Hoard on Tour. Also visiting Stafford and Tamworth, the touring exhibition is a chance to discover the secrets of the largest collection of Anglo-Saxon gold ever found.
More than 14,000 people are expected to come to the cathedral to see the stunning temporary display.

Thanks to the new initiative, Let’s Work Together, a 97-year-old Lichfield man called Arthur avoided serious harm after a house fire. The initiative gives home workers from local agencies, such as councils, the NHS, emergency services and housing providers, the skills to spot risks in people’s homes and sign-post help and support. Thanks to the training she received, when Police Community Safety Officer, Liane Haddock, visited Arthur she requested a home fire risk check. Staffordshire Fire & Rescue then visited Arthur, and, working with Social Care & Health, the police & Arthur’s family, set his emergency alarm to immediately alert the emergency services in the event of a fire. Just five months later, a bin in Arthur’s house caught fire. Thanks to the automatic alarm, fire fighters were on the scene in moments and put out the fire.

City development starting soon

Work to build 60 homes, a 65-bed hotel, a restaurant, replacement toilets and 170 extra parking spaces on the Friary Outer car park site in Lichfield, is set to get underway this autumn. The £14 million development will feature 54 supported housing association homes for older and less able residents, as well as six shared ownership homes, to give first time buyers a chance to get on the housing ladder. As landowners, we’re proud to be involved in the project, alongside Bromford Group, who will manage the supported homes, the Homes & Communities Agency, who invested £2.4 million in the scheme, and the developers, S Harrison.

Historic parks
largest reservoirs in the West Midlands, which provides water for the Birmingham Canal Network. Until recently, we owned and managed it, but transferred ownership to Staffordshire County Council in April. Councillor Val Richards, Deputy Leader of Lichfield District Council, said: “Managing an asset of regional importance placed an unfair burden on the district council and local tax payers. This is why we worked with Staffordshire County Council to transfer the country park and reservoir.” Chasewater Country Park will continue to be managed by the district council for the next three years. The county council will lead the completion of the essential improvement works to the dam. We are restoring three parks in Lichfield, in partnership with Lichfield City Council. The project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund, is nearing completion. It includes restoring the Garden of Remembrance, Minster Pool and Walk and Beacon Park. Work has already seen the restoration of the Garden of Remembrance, which opened in time for Remembrance Day. Across the pool, the newly refurbished Speakers’ Corner saw its first event in May, with its second anniversary celebration.
Beacon Park’s Museum Garden’s makeover is well underway with the restored fountain and statues, new pathways, a refreshment kiosk and more. Martyrs’ Plaque has also been restored and moved to a more prominent place. The final stage of the works include the new bowling green and pavilion, finishing touches to the playground, extending the main pavilion, a café, refurbishing Minster Walk and more.
Summer is here, and Lichfield District Council’s leisure team has an exciting range of activities and events to keep your children entertained over the school summer break. We have holiday sessions from just £45 for the week for children aged 5 to 11. There are also play activity weeks, where children aged from 7 to 14 can take part in art weeks, outdoor fun at Beacon Park and Skateboarding sessions. And, with more than 60 holiday clubs, activities and sporty courses at our leisure centres and parks, there is plenty to make sure children and young people across the district and beyond have a summer of fun. This summer holidays, children and young people are in for a ‘splashtastic’ time with cut price swims at Burntwood and Friary Grange leisure centres. Anyone under 16, who is accompanied by a full paying adult, can swim for just 50p. Young people, from 8 to 16, who are not accompanied by an adult, can swim for £1. To take advantage of this offer, simply tell the leisure centre receptionist the magic phrase, ‘Summer Splashtastic’. Summer Splashtastic is running from 28 July to 4 September 2011. A maximum of two 50p swims per paying adult. Normal leisure centre rules apply. 5
