Actor, Director, Producer and Poet - known for: "Anatomy of a Murder," "Vertigo," "It's a Wonderful Life" A total of 80 films in all. His career spanned from 1935-1991 Jimmy usually portrayed characters of high morality which he epitomized both on and off screen.

I came across this incredible poem by the late great American Actor “Jimmy Stewart” and thought it perfectly embodied most people’s relationships with their dogs, cats and pets in general. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did and do.... Special Thanks to All my friends and colleagues who help me put out my little labor of love “Lick Magazine” as I am able. He never came to see me when I would call--Unless I had a tennis ball. But mostly, he didn’t come at all. When he was young, he never learned to heel or sit or stay. He did things his own way Discipline was not his bag. But when you were with him, things sure didn’t drag. He’d dig up a rose bush to spite me And when I’d grab him, he’d bite me.
And as I would leave the room, He’d look at me from his place by the fire. He knew where the tennis balls were, upstairs. I’d give him one for a while. He’d push it under the bed with his nose And I’d push it out with a smile. Before very long, he’d tire of the ball And he would be asleep in his corner at no time at all.
He bit lots of folks from day to day. The delivery boy was his favorite prey. The gas man wouldn’t read our meter,
And there were nights when I’d feel him climb upon our bed And lay between us and I’d pat his head. There were nights when I’d feel his stare,
He said we owned a real man eater. He set the house on fire, but the story is long to tell. Suffice to say, he survived, and the house as well. On evening walks, and Gloria took him, He was always first out the door. The old one and I brought up the rear because our bones were sore. He’d charge up the street with Mom hanging on -- -What a beautiful pair they were! To follow him where he was bound, We’re early bedders at our house, I guess I’m the first one to retire,
And I’d wake up and he’d be sitting there. And I’d reach out to stroke his hair. And now he’s dead.. And there are nights when I think I feel him climb upon our bed and he between us, And I’d pat his head. And there are nights when I think I feel that stare.. And I reach out my hand to stroke his hair.. And he’s not there. Oh, how I wish that wasn’t so--I’ll always love a dog named --”Beau”.
Dear Abby: Many years ago, on The Johnny Carson Show” Jimmy Stewart read a poem he had written about his dog. It was so beautiful, it brought tears to my eyes. I tried in vain to get a copy of it, and you are my last resort. I am 93 and living in s nursing home. Please print that poem Abby. I’d sign my name, but my family would think I’ve lost my marbles--GRANDMA Dear Grandma: the beautiful poem is titled “Beau”-And here it is: Sent to : The New York Post columnist “Dear Abby" in 1981.

"Breakfast with Waffles": The only thing Micheal Al‑ bert's dog "Waffles" has in common with a breakfast waffle is that they are both warm and fluffy. "Waffles" is a long-haired miniature dachshund who hit the big time 9 years ago when he found Papa Micheal and He's been living in the lap of luxury on San Francisco's prestigious Nob Hill ever since. Waffles has a nice pre-breakfast walk with trips to Huntington Park be‑ fore lunch and, an evening walk as well. Papa retired at 43 having enjoyed a career in the publishing world working with 'San Francisco Magazine' and later, with 'Smithsonian' Into the 'Golden Years', only miniature Dachshunds seem to be able to bring the joy of an‑ other heartbeat in the house.
Devin is a graduate of NYU with a BA in Film & Television. What Is This
What is that special inexplicable connection between people and animals? Between people and their pets?
friends and partners in our lives and the lives of our families.
In an instant there is “instant” understanding .. no words.. just a look, a moment, a feeling and we know. They know that we love them or maybe that we want to strangle them because they just peed on grandmother’s antique oriental rug!
They accept us whether we are homely to look at or simply divine.. forever accepting, loving and there for us when we need a smile and they offer a wag.
As they say in french, “Je Ne Sais Quoi!” But it’s there and it’s been there this connection, this understanding, this discourse of thoughts and ideas (without language) since the beginning of time. Sometimes we feel that instant connection with people too. You can just look at a stranger and feel warmth towards them, acceptance or the opposite.. Pets somehow understand us and accept us for the most part expecting little in return. And they don’t seem to care whether they live in the yard, a barn, the dog house, your house or right there in bed with you! They just long to be devoted to us, to be near us ..whether we are rich or poor, young or old, fat or skinny or downright homely. Dogs are understandably dubbed “Man’s best friend” for a reason. They look at us and see love. Pure and simple.. they love us however we are, whoever we are. They accept us (flaws and all), perhaps better than any mother, father, family member, lover or friend. And for many people that love is very mutual. Though we might get upset when they bring in a freshly killed bird as a dinner offering or run into the kitchen with mud on their feet.. they are still our
So, we have taken the opportunityof basking in this eternal lovefest connection between man and dogs by showcasing some beautiful visual connections between people and their pets.. a selection of photos from yesteryear of people of note and their best furry friends. With a snap of the camera the love “Man’s best friend” extends to us is palpable whether we are a celebrity or an average Joe. Our furry friends are so dear and appreciated that some humans have shown their love by leaving their millions or billions to their best friends. Their dogs!! And in some cases.. cats, monkeys and others of the non-human variety.

Magel Barrett-Raddenberry Bequest: 4 million to her dogs (unspecified number) Magel was the widow of “Star Trek’s” creator. She also left an additional 1 million for the employee who would be caring for her pets. Chihuahua “Conchita,” Maltese “April Marie” and Yorkshire Terrier “Lucio” were left 11 million by their owner( which included an 8 million dollar mansion). and Soul Dog Someone once told me that every person has a soul dog. You can have many animals during your lifetime but only one will mark your life forever. This dog will be "the special one," your "soul dog." Anakin Skywalker was my soul dog-- a little beige chihuahua full of attitude and affection. Anakin was my daughter, my partner in crime. She was my emotional support, my life companion.. and the best friend I ever had. She was my everything. When I adopted her back in July of 2005 I was going through hell and it was Anakin who took me psychologically away She made me smile and shine again. Together we traveled the world. We shared so many adventures and experiences that I would need a book to tell you all about them! But We ended up -- where we belonged - "Beverly Hills." Here we met the best dog community ever! It was here where I found my people, "my tribe," and where I spent the best years of my life. It was thanks to this tiny four legged angel that I met the most incredible people ever!
I will never forget all those birthday parties in Holmby and Roxbury parks, our daily walks all over Rodeo Drive or our fabulous lunches at the "Pussy and Pooch" Pet Lifestyle Center. "Anakin Skywalker" was named after my favorite movie character from " Star Wars." She was a real "doggie diva" and the first dog model of Spain. But Spain was not her place. It was Beverly Hills, Hollywood and New York City where she became a top dog star and really shined! She was used as a model for the top pet designers "Ada Nieves" and "Anthony Rubio" among others. She hit the catwalks at New York's Pet Fashion Week, plus she became a dog actress as she took parts in various American movies. But an unexpected and perverse twist of fate made us leave our world of happiness and joy to return to Gran Canaria, Spain. Neither Anakin nor I ever wanted to go to the island but circumstances took us there. I had never been more unhappy. But the most painful moment of my life came on June 16, 2020 when Anakin Skywalker crossed the "Rainbow Bridge. 95
"I have experienced losses throughout my life but this one, Anakin's death, left me immersed in the deepest sadness and with a terrible depression. Yes, Anakin Skywalker was my "soul dog," my everything. We shared such a bond that I have not even felt with another human. I am totally positive that wherever she is now; she has felt my sadness. She wanted to help me heal and get past the sadness I was going through. So she did her magic. She sent me a little boy chihuahua " Luke Skywalker".
I was just coping with my depression when a friend sent me a message with a video of a chihuahua who was going to be sent to a shelter. His family after 5 years could not continue to take care of him, And so I found "Luke." I will never forget the moment when I saw his eyes, for in his eyes I saw my "Anakin." I felt in my heart that Anakin had sent me this angel to help me heal and so I adopted him right away. On June 22, 2020 a new chapter of life started for my new chihuahua "Luke Skywalker" and for me. 97
I will never forget that moment and I always promise all my dogs that they will have the best life and the best second chance ever. And I always stick to my word. So now " Luke Skywalker" has a real dig mom, a real loving family, a brother ("Darth Vader") and a wonderful life full of love, joy and travels. As Anakin, he is a great model.. although Darth is still "teaching him the business..." But he is such a talented dog that he is learning really fast. Now the three of us always go everywhere together. We are a real family . We are currently working on a project to promote pet friendly culture in Spain. Thanks to the fact that Spain is progressing in terms of animal welfare; we consider that now is an excellent time to promote all those establishments where our furry friends are welcome.
According to the recently approved animal welfare law.. dogs are full members if our families and as such more and more families can count on them to share their moments of leisure and recreation. Our project wants to help all those families who want go everywhere with their furry friends!! Even to be a dog you have to be lucky in this life and Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker are the Best Pet Ambassadors that second chanced are possible. And now they are living a life of luxury, glamour, parties, catwalks, travels but most importantly " I Love Them"! I love them to the moon and back so they have the most important things ever: Love, Home and Family!!
Thank you Anakin for sending me my angel whose life not only changed but he changed my life as well. He gave me back the joy of living and my "smile"!! Follow us to be part of our adventures and see how two rescued dogs are living the best lives ever!!! •

So Lucky to Have
Older dogs know their manners, have at least some house and obedience training, are more focused and mellow, not requiring your every moment of attention. Most golden oldies know what “no” means and are happy to lay by your side. They typically sleep through the night without waking you for potty breaks and have grown into their paws and personality, so you know what you are signing up for when you adopt a senior dog. And yet, since ‘50 is the new 30’you might be surprised to see just how much zest many senior dogs still have. Adopting a senior dog is a no brainer to me, yet older dogs often get passed over at shelters for puppies. Many homeless old dogs were once owned by someone while others wait well into their later years to get that special human they can love and be loved by.

What is important is that you make the most of whatever time you have together. There’s nothing as rewarding as making the remaining days, weeks, months or years precious for an older animal. Since 2000, my husband and I have been the proud parents of rescued senior Akitas, and each has had his or her own unique personality. In 2020, we were saddened by the loss of our darling Haiku who crossed the Rainbow Bridge at age 15.

He had truly been our child and had gone on many adventures. He was our first dog to dip paws in both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and traveled to more than a dozen states! A few months after Haiku left this earthly plane, unknown to me, my husband, Paul, planned a mountain getaway for our 30th Anniversary. Two days prior to our special day, a dear friend alerted me to a 10-year old Akita who had been homeless for more than a month. I wasn’t ready to fall in love yet, but the dog’s picture melted my heart. I showed Kiko’s photo to my hubby and I’m sure he instantly fell in love too. We adopted Princess Kiko on our anniversary and our meeting was totally meant to be! My surprise getaway turned out to be just a 15-minute drive to where Kiko was sheltered! In our first two weeks together, somber Kiko began to blossom. Always proud to bring us her stuffed slothy or hedgie in gratitude

when she was filled with joy. She loved car rides and golf cart rides in the “Kiko Cart” and gave the best “woos” and kisses. Kiko was the Grand Marshall in a parade riding in a Corvette convertible, filmed a TV Show pilot, was a calendar girl and appeared in magazines and books. Kiko attended a pet sitter’s conference by my side after making the 1,400 mile road trip to Cleveland and back, but mostly, Kiko loved laying in our dining room window, chin on the sill, watching the world. Never enough time, I cried my heart out when she passed away at age 13, but I know we gave her a great three years and the love she gave us was immeasurable. Kiko had been gone two months, and we had not planned to adopt again for at least a couple more, but a senior Akita made her presence known to us: Wish, so named because when she was picked up on the streets of Memphis, she was in such ill health that the rescue “wished” she would make it. Thankfully, Big East Akita Rescue (B.E.A.R) bailed Wish out of the shelter, and and JoAnn Dimon and her village that nursed her back to wellness. I am so grateful to B.E.A.R. and all who transported her from Memphis to New Jersey and to her numerous vet appointments, loved her, brushed her, fed her and just told her she was a beautiful girl. Once we learned about Wish, my husband and I were eager to adopt her and drove 1,600 miles to the Jersey Shore and back.
Again, a ten-year old was destined to become our girl! This lovebug had suffered more than any other dog we had every adopted: bloat leading to a gastropexy (learn more on page 104 in this publication), heartworms, pneumonia, a terrible flea infestation leading to dermatitis and great fur loss, malnourished and about 20 lbs. underweight, yet she still had kisses for everyone she met.
As I said before, there are no guarantees,but we plan to make sure Wishy’s everyday is a new adventure. She has already walked the streets of Colonial Williamsburg, and is carrying on the tradition of riding in the Kiko Cart! Wishy is gaining confidence, developing a routine and watching her blossom, like you would watch a child or puppy grow and discover new things, is joy! Knowing Wishy feels safe, happy and loved is so heartwarming that I cannot imagine adopting a dog who isn’t grey muzzled. There’s no way to know how long we’ll be lucky enough to share our lives with Wishy, but she has gotten forever into my heart. The Dangers of
At one time or another, most of us have felt uncomfortably bloated after eating too much. Our stomach gets tight and feels overly full, but in a short time, the food and gas leave the stomach, enter the intestines and we feel better. Dogs also get bloated, but the way bloat presents in them is referred to by veterinarians as “the mother of all emergencies” since in just tens of minutes to a few hours, the condition can become deadly! Gastric dilatation is the term for when a dog’s stomach stretches from the food, fluid and/or gas that has entered, sometimes stretching as big as a basketball. Pressure from the distended stomach pushes on the lungs making breathing difficult. By narrowing the openings of the stomach, the pressure also prevents the contents from moving on its journey, so the bloating dog cannot vomit or release the food into his intestines. Uncomfortable as that is, the situation becomes deadly when the enlarged stomach twists, cutting off the blood supply, resulting in tissue death. Known as gastric dilatation volvulus, the twisting
stomach pulls on the vessels carrying blood back to the heart causing circulation to slow, and the heart to beat irregularly (arrhythmia) resulting in shock. Once the stomach has torsioned (twisted), immediate veterinary care is the only chance for survival.
Top 4 Risk Factors Genetics & Body Weight: Knowing a dog’s family history is key, since dogs with a parent or sibling who have bloated are 60% more likely to bloat as well. Additionally, large deep-chested breeds are more prone to bloat while studies show that thinner dogs too are at greater risk. While letting your canine pal get overweight is never a good thing, a little fat taking up space is the abdomen does allow less room for the stomach to move from its normal position. Breed & Chest-shape: Depth-to-width ratio of a dog’s chest can contribute to bloat. Dogs with deep keel-shaped chests have more room for the stomach to move in the abdomen behind the ribcage, increasing their risk. Great danes are at greatest risk but other breeds high on the list include:

Akitas, Bloodhounds, Boxers, German shepherds, Irish setters & wolfhounds, St. Bernards, Standard poodles & their mixes (goldendoodles, aussiedoodles) and Weimaraners. Age: For large breeds, the risk of bloat goes up by 20% every year after the age of 5, and for giant breeds its the same but beginning at age 3. The majority of bloating incidents occur between 7 and 12 years of age. Eating fast: Possibly due to increased swallowing of air, but fast eaters increase their risk.
Prevention According to a paper published by Tufts University, 30% of dogs that develop bloat die or have to be euthanized. So prevention is truly a pet parent’s best tool to keep their fur kid safe.
Portion Control & Slow Down Eating Split the daily amount into two portions to prevent the stomach from being stretched by one large meal. Stretching the stomach also stretches the hepatogastric ligament which keeps the stomach in its proper position Slow down dogs who scarf their food by using puzzle bowls are on the market with compartments or grooves that cause the dog to pace their consumption. Dividing the food into the cups of a muffin tin is a simple and economical way to help your dog eat slowly. Feeding canned/wet food mixed into kibble lowers the incidence of bloat, and keeping a healthy gut by feeding probiotics may help.
Exercise After eating, a casual stroll on-leash may help digestion, but NO running, swimming, chasing a ball or other intense activities for two hours after eating or one hour prior.

What to Do Remain calm and get your dog to the Veterinarian at once for emergency treatment! This is a life-threatening condition that will not correct itself and time is of the essence – death can occur in minutes! If your dog has any risk factor, discuss with your veterinarian BEFORE bloat becomes an issue. Many at-risk dogs get their stomachs “tacked” (gastropexy) to prevent it from flipping. This is often done at the time of their spay or neuter. Several kinds of gastropexy surgery exist, so your veterinarian is your best resource as to when and what type of surgery is best for YOUR dog. Stress Dogs with fearful and nervous personalities have a higher incidence of bloat than calm and relaxed pups. Ask your veterinarian to refer an animal behaviorist to help you manage your dog’s stress. In multi-pet households, feed the bloat-prone dog separately to prevent him from gulping out of worry that his food may be snagged by another. When stepping out for the evening or when on vacation, hire a professional pet sitter instead of boarding the nervous pup. 105

Crew recently celebrated his 12th birthday in his new home, where he loves to lounge by the pool, go for car rides, and sit in the grass watching the neighbors’ dogs! Happy Birthday, Crew!!! At 13 years old, Hoss was surrendered when his family had a new baby. He was heartbroken emotionally and suffering physically from neglect. Covered in fleas, he had a painful, fractured tooth and tested positive for heartworm disease. Hoss desperately needed help to heal his body and his spirit. Thanks to a grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization, Stop the Suffering Animal Rescue of Ohio could get right to work, providing Hoss with all the medical care he needed. Once his body healed, they knew they needed to mend his broken heart.
Here are a few stories about older dogs grants from The Grey Muzzle Organization have helped: This is Crew, an alumnus of Poodle and Pooch Rescue of Florida. He came to their organization at 10 years old and was in need of extensive medical care. Crew was suffering from dental issues, fatty deposits, and a terrible ear infection. He even had bruises from shaking his head to relieve his discomfort. Poodle & Pooch used their medical grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization to provide extensive medical treatment for senior dogs who come into their care. Following a course of super antibiotics, dental cleaning, and removal of fatty lipomas, Crew was feeling much better and ready to relax in a foster home!
Stop the Suffering put out the call for a foster/hospice home where Hoss could be cherished for the rest of his days. Within a week, a wonderful family reached out about giving Hoss the loving home he deserved! Hoss’s new family said, “Adopting a senior is a treasure and an honor. Greenland isn't a place I’d thought about going to before, but it came up as a “side trip” from Iceland, where I already was going to visit again during the summer. Greenland is a truly beautiful and remote part of the world where the only inhabitable locations are along the coast on the western and eastern side of this massive land, that is a North American autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. I went to the west coast of Greenland, visiting their capital, Nuuk. There are no roads in Greenland except in the cities. Nuuk boasts three traffic lights, which accounts for the total in all of Greenland!

Outside of Nuuk, the capital, are beautiful, fjords were people have small summer cottages. You see brightly colored Danish-style houses in this majestic landscape. After visiting Nuuk, I flew up north to Ilulissat, which is above the Arctic Circle - it's either that or a long ride via boat. Since I was there in July, the sun never set! It was strange, yet nice, having daylight all the time. Around Ilulissat, and in Qasigiannguit, which we visited via boat, we saw many Greenland Dog breeding locations. They a large husky-type dog kept as a sled dog, and are relied on for survival during the dark winter months where people subsist on hunting and fishing - requiring travel across massive ice floes. Today, the breed is considered nationally and culturally important to Greenland and efforts are made to safeguard its purity. In western Greenland north of the Arctic Circle and the entirety of eastern Greenland, it is illegal to import any dog from outside. A number of projects have been initiated in an attempt of ensuring that Greenland's dog sledding culture, knowledge and use, along with the breed itself, are not lost.

Ilulissat is where you can see icebergs the size of buildings! They tower over the homes along the edge of the harbor, making them look like tiny doll houses.
