equally amazing and talented fellow band mates who created this new vision and version of themselves and of this regal entity “Queen” together.
Freddie was and will always be the King of Queen and the Queen of cats!
Freddie remained kind throughout his life. He had a deep appreciation of animals and great loyalty to his friends and people he knew from the beginning.
This super talented dynamo catapulted to fame and fortune through his epic and iconic transformation from Farrokh Bulsara, a shy, insecure boy with rather humble beginnings in Zanzibar India to “Freddie Mercury” the internationally acclaimed rock phenomenon and shooting star whose music ignited and united the world. Freddie garnered the respect and admiration of people everywhere regardless of age, nationality, race, religion, political bent or sexual orientation or opinion. And Freddie continues to the “rock the world” with his music almost 30 years after his passing. Freddie Mercury was the “great pretender” because his roots were humble. He Artwork: Serge Averbuch was shy and insecure. Few would have thought by seeing him as Farrokh back then that his dream could become a reality. But Freddie surpassed the mundane and transformed himself into his best version of himself through his amazing talent, creativity, vision and drive. And of course he was aided by the amazing support and lifetime friendship, love and alliance with his

“Freddie Mercury” remains an Icon in American Society because he embodies what America has always been about- a place where you can follow your dream, be true to yourself and transform to be the “real you.” This issue of Lick we ask our readers to look into the mirror and bring forth what is beautiful within yourself. Bring out “your Freddie” whoever that might be. Transform yourself into the “best” part of you and then help transform the world, animals and others with love as well.

Animal Chat When I first ‘officially’ met Heather S Michaels at the Rock Against MS Charity Event last year, I knew she had a heart for animals and a kind soul. We were both aware of one another from past red carpet events we attended, but we never had the chance to really talk...ANIMALS. So here we were at this MS red carpet charity event, amid many celebrities, chatting away in a corner about our affinity for fur babies forgetting about the A list crowd surrounding us, lol. Heather works tirelessly helping animals and is a mover and shaker in the animal arena. She is really amazing and something of a rarity in this town and business. She puts her heart and soul into helping our furry friends. Heather comes from Hollywood royalty. Her uncle won several Emmys, creating many of the famous films from the Rat Pack with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis as well as several Elvis Presley films, Cary Grant films and ‘An Eve with Fred Astaire’, for which she also won an Emmy. Her family created the Flip Wilson Show and the early People’s Choice Awards. To Heather, being a celeb force herself, she
hosts dozens of news entertainment programs on NBC, 60 minutes, ESPN, Inside Edition and MTV. She’s often an analyst and contributor for many of the National News programs, and has had appearances on Greys Anatomy, Arrested Development, Jane the Virgin, and in feature films such as, “A Walk Among Tombstones”. She has produced and narrated News segments on 60 minutes and NBC, and is currently writing a book and producing a Feature Documentary, “Pawns and CoConspirators”. It’s amazing how down to earth (and animal loving) she is once you get to know her. With such a busy schedule, it’s a wonder how she does it all... and she does it in heels, with heart and class. This is why I said, “Heather, you’ve got to be my next ‘Animal Chat’!” And She accepted my offer! DD: Heather, you have such a heart for animals, when did you first realize you were an animal person? HM: Daniel, yes... you noticed that right away, my heart melts for these dogs & animals in need. Philanthropy & humanitarian work is so near & dear to my heart, it always has been. I’ve been rescuing dogs for nearly 20 yrs. I’ve been busy as a TV personality and spokesperson, yet I’m always finding that animals are drawn like a magnet into my life, since I was a little girl. I love them all and connect with them, and just want to save each and every one of them. Well this little girl is all grown up, but I can’t seem to stop opening up my heart and finding a way back to philanthropy. I have been featured on many shows and networks like Hallmark Home & Family, CBS and NBC. I’m also working on developing a new program series that features unique personalities - combined with recognizing our environmental issues that need a little TLC in a celebrity driven entertainment format. We can all make an impact, & there are many ways we can do this, inspiring one another to rise up & make that impact.
HEATHER S. MICHAELS & DANIEL DICRISCIO DD: Did you have pets while you were a child growing up? HM: I’ve always had pets growing up, since I was a baby in my crib. My folks brought home a puppy when I was a newborn and that dog was my protector and my best friend. Dogs are amazing, all of my childhood was spent around family pets. There are many pictures of me with my dog as a child and adorable pictures of him watching over my crib while I slept. Fella (a miniature schnauzer) was my the first family dog when I was a baby. Then, Brutus another (miniature schnauzer), and then, Maxwell, yet ANOTHER miniature schnauzer. My parents loved this breed. I also loved horses and rode English when I was a young girl. I always loved animals.
some of the fur kids. I’ve set up my foundation for them, and although I am busy with my career in television, I want to find a location for my foundation, so that I can provide a safe haven for more animals, and provide an educational program for children, as they are the future environmentalists and animal advocates. This is how my fundraising campaign will benefit. Daniel, you asked me how I keep it all in line, how I juggle it all .. I’ve been doing a lot of the rescue solo, however we have such an amazing community of advocates and I want to develop a program where more youth is engaged in joining our efforts. I want to build a team of advocates, because together I know we can make a greater difference. I can sure use some help, so please pass the word out Daniel! My fundraising campaign is up and running, and we’re looking for a property that can compliment my vision.
DD: What advice can you give to someone who wants to buy a dog?
HM: I will always ask peeps to please, ADOPT/RESCUE a dog. Go to the local shelters and meet the quiet ones, the scared ones, the ones that aren’t always the first to be noticed. Meet a senior dog, seniors are amazing. These dogs are all extraordinary, and going to the shelter to meet them, spend some time getting to know them, can make all the difference in the world for that dog. And guess what, you may have just found yourself your bestie - and for that one dog, you will have changed their life. Kitties are also beautiful, loyal, and sweet.
DD: I see you do a lot of charity fundraising for dogs and
I recently donated to one of them, plus, you do so much more. How do you find the time and keep everything in line? HM: Charitable work is near and dear to my heart and I want to help whenever I can. Philanthropy makes such a difference and the animals, don’t have a voice. We are their voice and spokespeople per se ..so when I can, in between a studio shoot or television broadcast, you can often find me in a dress and heels skipping into the shelter to check on
Foster is also a great way to get to know a dog and help them acclimate to being in a home once again. Adopt don’t Shop - that’s our motto, which means adopt a dog - go to the shelter, and I promise you, you will fall in love.
DD: What are some things to lookout for if someone wants to donate to an animal charity, pet Go fund me, etc? There are some bad ones out there plus some good ones, too.
HM: Some things to lookout for when someone wants to donate to an animal charity, is be sure they have a good rapport in the community. Also, very important is that the charity be responsible with the dogs they rescue. Too many
37
times we hear of animals being shipped across country without vetting the final destination. I cringe when I hear this. Rescues should be kind, and always have a rapport with the animals. If you don’t see a professional and kind demeanor, it’s a red flag. Donating to a charity is wonderful because it helps the foundation to care for the animals. There are so many costly expenses; like rehabilitation, medical, shots, food, supplies, boarding etc..and to function we need funds from community. Be sure the charity is actually using those funds for the care of the animals and not exploiting these poor helpless animals. I just rescued a Bear (who was over 60) and other animals from a horrific situation in which the person was not legit and was allegedly running a scam, and the animals suffered. However, I never gave up. I postponed several of my broadcast projects, because I was on a mission to save these animals. I had no idea at that time what I would uncover, and it was most disturbing.
troublemakers. The loves of my life. They were on many red carpets with me, & one paparazzi photographer used to always say to me, “Heather, your dog Jimmy is your best accessory on the red carpet!” He was also a favorite with many of my celebrity & athlete friends, like Terrell Owens, Francis Fisher, Todd Bridges, and so many others. My big giant boy is 150 lbs and is my current pup I’m advocating for and caring for. He came from a hoarding situation. I rescued several horses, but I can’t keep them until I find a property for my foundation, and then I can give more rescue horses and piggies a home. I’m a vegan and being conscious of the well being of ALL lives is important and this is part of our programs, to show people how they can live a healthy happy lifestyle, for them and for the animals. Make healthy choices, please don’t eat animals.
DD: What’s new and upcoming in Heather’s world in 2020?
HM: I have this wonderful health and wellness celebrity style show. It’s a Remake of a variety style show from my great Uncle’s Hollywood Glamour days, but with the unique style of modern day programming. That’s exciting for me, because we get to make a great impact while entertaining our guests and visiting celebrity homes, and hosting them in our home studio. More to come on that. I’m raising funds for a special project - which I spent 4 yrs on, broke the 1st National story before my fellow news colleagues, and that is a big project. It’s a spy novel feature film based on real life, where every single thing we know has been compromised (more on that later)
That was a horrible situation and I learned very quickly that there are some very bad people out there exploiting and even harming animals. It took me 79 days non stop, some days 20 hours around the clock, but I saved them all from this horrible situation. I also now have these with the District Attorneys and Attorney General. That was an extreme situation. However, we hear things like this on the news from time to time, and we must expose it - for the safety and well being of these innocent animals
DD: Do you have any pets and if so, do you consider them family, children, or?
HM: I have dogs and many of the rescues are still always going to be in my heart, & my fur babies. I call them all my kids. Jimmy & Jake were the Dobie duo - more like the
I am writing my memoirs, family history of the first days of golden Hollywood & those glass ceilings we have shattered as we evolve. These are stories of Michael Jackson, Prince, Michael Jackson, BB King, Aretha Franklin, Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson and the many stars and icons I have worked with.
DD: So Heather, I’d like to ask what’s your advice on
animal adoption, etc during Coronavirus COVID_19 times?” HM: My Advice on these Covid 19 days of uncertainty, is to embrace our “Staycation” and bunker down with a shelter dog or cat. We are all in our homes for the safety and well being of all our communities, so bringing a dog or a pet into our hearts and homes is another way we can do our part and make a difference. “More”
Animal Chat
Barbara Lazaroff is such an amazing and beautiful person, I don’t know where to begin? To me, she is “The Queen of Beverly Hills” and the original “Real Housewife of Beverly Hills”..but smarter and classier!
Barbara is the interior designer and co creator of the world famous Spago (with her ex husband Chef Wolfgang Puck) and a myriad of delectable upscale restaurants. Tireless, dedicated, and compassionate in whatever she chooses to do; from her endeavors in philanthropy, restaurants, interior designing, public speaking, humanitarian causes, her family, animals, etc, she gets the job done...and she does it with love, too. Barbara is an avid animal lover. She loves all kinds of animals and has owned and owns Llamas, dogs, cats, birds, and so many more. She told me her dream would be to own a ranch so she could have many animals but for now Casa Lazaroff in Beverly Hills is home to her and her family of pets. I met Barbara a few years ago at The Taste Awards in Beverly Hills and I asked her to be my next Animal Chat interview because of her extreme love for animals. Would you believe she just got kittens the day before Easter? Awww, you gotta love her!
In a closing email response to me she wrote, “Catwoman to Catman you’re a good soul”. So cool!
DD: When did you first know you were an animal lover and what kind of pets did you own?
BL: I knew I loved animals since I was a young child. Since we were working class, we lived in small confined areas and I never had an opportunity for a pet and I love animals. We lived in very small apartments in the Bronx and then Queens. I really just had only one pet as a child and I only had it for a week and it was a small German Shepherd puppy that somebody had asked my mother that we would take in and I absolute fell in love with immediately and we named the puppy Champ.
DD: How did you come to own Llamas? BL: At that age of seven, I fell in love with Llamas. I told my mother that I was never getting married and I was going to have a Llama and I was going to live in a big house in Connecticut and have two Rolls Royces in the driveway. I do not know why. My mother apparently told me she laughed a lot at my saying this. So I grew up and I did get married (and I got divorced). I had two Llamas and I don’t have a house in Connecticut but I have one here in Beverly Hills and I have no interest in having two Rolls Royces in the driveway.
DD: You’re such a busy woman and you do so many things.
You’re an icon to many and to me you’re like the Queen of Beverly Hills. So how do you find the time to care for your animals? BL: First of all, I’m a very lucky person. I raised my kids with caretakers because I was always busy, flying places, etc. but would find time at night to help them with their homework. I would never, ever have considered having as many pets as I had or have unless there were people here all the time. There’s never a time that my home is empty whether it be me, my partner, housekeeper, or caretakers. My house is never without somebody in it, so I would never leave an animal in my home alone.
DD: Any advice you can share to pet owners?
BARBARA LAZAROFF & DANIEL DICRISCIO BL: Daniel, I think for people living on a limited income and don’t have the ability to have somebody care for their animals, they have to really consider... is it fair? If they’re able to walk with, say a dog in the morning and come home from work at least an hour to be able to take care of the dog and walk it, it’s fine. They have to consider, I mean I always say when a dog has an accident to a person when they get upset, “Could you hold your bowel movements or your urine that long?” I just feel that if you can think of your pet the way you think about your own comfort, even your own personal hygiene and your need to go to the lavatory, you have to consider it the same way.
DD: Tell me about the new adorable kitties you have?
waiting for us to take care of them. We keep them in the enclosure with a heater, air conditioner, and a condo. There are three kittens that look like Persians but they’re mixed, then there’s one that’s black and white with a black strip down its back, and one that’s kind of gray, black, and white. They’re names are Sweetpea, Minx, GW, JR, and Pepe le meuw, they’re so adorable!
DD: What do you think children who grow up with animals learn from having them?
BL: I believe children who grow up with animals, unless they are allergic, are more altruistic, I believe they learn more compassion and kindness, there’s a gentleness they learn.
DD: Any final thoughts you would like to say? BL: I’m starting a GoFund Me for my Spago employees during these difficult COVID times and I will be sending 100 meals to Cedar Sinai that I am paying for myself. Spago recently raised $8000 for Seder Passover that we’ve been doing for many years now. Daniel, I can already tell the kind of caring person you are so you know, during these tough times we are currently facing, if you’ve got a neighbor to shop for or even bringing somebody a loaf of bread, providing stuff to somebody who’s ill and walking their dogs, you know, wear a mask and gloves help them, sometimes an elderly person can’t get out. Pets are a good thing to have at this time, too, during quarantine.
BL: The day before Easter and Passover at my home, my girlfriend who was in the guest house, comes to me and says she sees something small and furry running around this enclosure at my home that has two doors and walls around it. Well Daniel, we have four kind of domesticated cats, all black, that live in the garden. They came to us less than a year ago. One of the parents was pregnant and we didn’t know it, and she brought us five kittens and she stood there
So there are lots of ways we can help. And then the last thing is if you can’t do any of those things, the very least you should do is call your parents or your friends. Call somebody, someone alone, email them, text them, check in on them. I have four girlfriends that wound up with COVID and I checked in with them all the time. “How was your day today?” You know, usually they have a relapse day. Just reached, reach out. Be kind. Stay Safe. https://barbaralazaroff.com/

Billy Joel’s love for animals and his commitment to their well-being sings out at North Shore Animal League America (www.animalleague.org) in two extraordinary spaces designed by Mario Arbore, the architect turned cat whisperer behind the cat-focused design firm, Square Paws (squarepaws.com). Where? When? How? These are the first questions any Billy Joel fan will ask. The answers come from Arbore, a long time devoted fan of The Piano Man, a cat whisperer himself, creator of two remarkable Billy Joel-inspired cat habitats at North Shore Animal League America (NSALA). These spaces are open to the cat-adopting public at Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center — or BFF, as NSALA affectionately calls this 14,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art space which transcends whimsical and entertaining to become practical and inviting. by Lori Zelenko

I love him because he’s very unique unlike any other dog I’ve known. He’s human-like at times and has a very spunky attitude. We always have fun whether it’s watching films together or going outdoors to play in the sun.” “He gives me so much love which is the best feeling in the world, as a dogs love is the greatest love of all, especially when it’s from a fluffy Maltese.”

King of Queen Queen of Cats
by Barbara Jayne
“Freddie Mercury,” was the original “Cat Daddy.” Who might best represent the cat lovers of this world than a man who was rather like a cat himself.. lithe, handsome, quick and with an enormous vocal range. Dare I say “Meow”?
is met with a life sentence or worse). These same countries opened their arms to him, erected statues in his honor and turned a blind eye to his sexual persuasion and behavior.
Freddie Mercury was a true artist in every sense of the word, from his love of the graphic arts to his personal style of dress, movement and magnitude of his stage presence, to the original creativity of his music which he created and performed across all musical genres from rock to opera. To the delight and amazement of many, Freddie Mercury garnered the respect of every type of person (with no exception of race, religion or nationality). He made a unanimous universal connection through his music.
Freddie Mercury was born “Farrokh Bulsara” on September 5th, 1946 in Stonetown, Zanzibar. He was born a British subject and he was born a Virgo, the sign ruled by the planet Mercury, the sign of nymphs, maidens and fairies. Virgo II, (Freddie’s birth week) is also the week of “Enigma.”
The most telling example of Freddie’s grand, almost “god-like” persona is the fact that he was accepted, appreciated and loved in so many countries around the world where some of the most anti-homosexual beliefs and punishments reside (places where homosexuality
If that is not “god like” quality what is?
So little wonder that the boy that was born in rather modest surroundings as Farrokh Bulsara, was later transformed into “Freddie Mercury,” and the logo that symbolized his band “Queen,” was created by him “transforming” him and his bandmates from the young creative individuals they were, into one united artistic musical force that rocked the world over, and almost 30 years after his death “still” rocks the world today.

Freddie with Teddy bear. 1970’s “the beginning,” at Freddie’s Holland Road, Kensington apartment.
Freddie Mercury was not only the incredible lead singer and music sensation of the world renowned band “Queen,” but Freddie was also a full time dad.. just not to children.. to cats!! Freddie’s fur children included: Tom and Jerry (given to him by his lifetime friend, “common law wife,“ as he liked to call her and one time lover Mary Austin), Lily, Miko, Oscar, Dorothy, Romeo and Goliath (Goliath was apparently named for his physical stature). There was also “Tiffany” (the only purebred in the group) and “Delilah”.. Freddie’s favorite! (She was a temperamental moody number). Freddie had 10 kitties in All. Most of this brood was picked up from shelters and rescue groups like the Blue Cross (a U.K. Animal Welfare Charity), and only “Tiffany” (who was also given to him by Mary Austin), was a long-haired blue point purebred. The rest were mutts! So this was the “other side” of Freddie, the star.. the music sensation. Freddie was the Original Cat Daddy!! His kitties were his spoiled babies. And he was not only ahead of his time with his music, but also his tremendous devotion to cats as “pets”. Interesting to note, that “pets” have grown into a 75 Billion dollar industry since Freddie fell in love with his first furry child. Each of Freddie’s former little orphans was spoiled, spoiled, spoiled as perhaps only Freddie knew how to do in grand style. Each kitty had their own Christmas stocking filled with little kitty treats, toys and other edibles during the holiday season. The fur kids each had their own bedroom, not that any stayed put in them. Each was “Daddy’s baby” as Mercury would literally call his kitty children from the road frequently. The humans (whether it was Mary, or whoever the cat sitter of the household would be during said trip) would put each kitty on the phone. They were given a tiny squeeze so Freddie could hear the little “meow” and “keep in touch.” He was so enamored with his “fur-baby collection,” that he even included tributes to them in his music. The first time I heard the song “Delilah,” I was taken aback because I thought it was about a woman .. “You make me so very happy when you cuddle up and go to sleep beside me and then you make me slightly mad when you .. try to pick up my phone and .. ‘pee’ all over my Chippendale suite!” What?! “Pee”.. I realized how “off course” I was.. He was not talking about a woman but his adored kitty!!
“Last known Portrait of Freddie Mercury.” Freddie is wearing a favorite colorful vest displaying his beloved cats. This waistcoat was a present from a friend who had the gift hand painted to order. Photo by Richard Gray (the band’s art director), who shot the photo during the filming of “These are the Days of Our Lives,” in 1991, their final video.
(I’ve included the words to his tribute song about his favorite “cat baby” Delilah in this story!!) “Delilah”was written and performed by Freddie on his last album with Queen in 1991. Especially when the song ends with multiple “Meows”!! You realize that the woman he is singing about is wearing a fur coat! Her own! Yes, Freddie was ahead of his time in every sense, musical and driven. He took piano lessons at 7 and by 8 he was studying at “St. Peters” (a British style school) in Panchgani, near Mumbai, India! By 12, he had started a band called “The Hectics,” imitating Little Richard one of his favorite musicians.

Delilah, Delilah oh my, oh my, oh my You’re unpredictable – ooh ooh ooh ooh You make me so very happy When you cuddle up and go to sleep beside me And then you make me slightly mad When you pee all over my Chippendale suite Ooh, ooh, Delilah Ooh, ooh, Delilah

The “Body Language” 1982 single launched a collection of costumes featuring hand stitched arrows. Freddie shown in a favorite black & red arrows leather jacket. He fancied himself “a black panther.”
THE “QUEEN LOGO” (left) The original Queen Logo (designed by Freddie Mercury) colorfully embodies a similarity to the United Kingdom’s Royal Coat of Arms. This is not simply a logo but actually a true representation of each Queen bandmate individually and together as one unified artistic life force. It is a symbolic stamp with astrological significance. The “Q” in the center is obvious in representing “Queen,” the total entity. The transformation. The 2 Majestic Lions one to the left and the other to the right of the “Q,” represent “John Deacon” and “Roger Taylor,” both Leo’s. The Crab draped over the center of the top of the “Q” represents “Brian May,” a Cancer. The two
Maidens/Virgins/Fairies or Nymphs on either side of the Center Crown represent “Freddie Mercury,” a Virgo. And also a “fairy”! The Phoenix eating the snake at the top of the logo hails from the ancient Nahua Indian myth that commanded that the indigenous people would find their kingdom and riches when they saw this Phoenix or sign. They would then transform themselves into Kings or Queens rising from the dirt, rising into new beings. Or in this case, four individuals, musicians with different talents and names transforming themselves into One entity, One kingdom, called “Queen”. 67
By 18, his family had emigrated to England, to escape the violence of the revolution against the Sultan of Zanzibar and its Arab government. And the move to “England,” set the stage for Farrokh to blossom into “Freddie Mercury.” He studied art at Isleworth Polytechnic in West London and later graphic art and design at Ealing Art College. This schooling gave him the background to later create the original symbolic Queen logo and no doubt added to his creativity in transforming his personal style into a universal music sensation. He joined a number of bands during his youth and by 1969 was performing with a group called the “Ibix” (later called “Wrecking”), in Liverpool. When this band dissolved he moved on to a band called “Sour Milk Sea” and when that band disbanded in 1970, he went on to work with Brian May (guitarist) and Roger Taylor (drummer) on their band “Smile”. John Deacon (bassist), came along in 1971 and together this group of four musicians launched a new group.. “Queen.” Freddie picked the band name “Queen” for its regal sound and brushed off the potential gay affiliation. He also set about creating a special logo that resembled a regal coat of arms. (His graphic arts background proved rather handy.) It was at this time that he changed his name forever more to “Mercury,” “Freddie Mercury”. And the “transformation” of Farrokh, Brian, Roger and John by the messenger of the gods occurred and “Queen” the entity was born! The melding of these 4 incredible artistic & talented dynamos has proven a force of nature. They became such an incredible sensation and even years later.. (with the passing of Freddie), they remain at the cutting edge of universal music and fame when the remaining band members are over a certain age. And that says a lot! To his credit, Freddy personally designed the rather symbolic “Queen” logo representing the transformation of the individual artists into a mega force. “Phoenix rising!” with Lions (Roger Taylor and John Deacon), Crab (Brian May) and Fairies (representing Freddie Mercury)! The song “Delilah” was written and performed by Freddie on his last album with Queen.
Freddie’s only “solo” album entitled “Mr Bad Guy,” was released in 1986 while Queen was on hiatus. He dedicated this album he wrote, performed and produced to his beloved cats. His sentiments were clear when he wrote on the liner notes of the Lp:
“This Album is dedicated to my cat Jerry — also Tom, Oscar and Tiffany and ALL the other Cat Lovers across the Universe —
Screw Everybody else!” G Freddie wrote 10 of the 17 songs on the “Queens Greatest Hits” album. G The “Spectator” described Freddie Mercury as “a performer out to tease, shock and ultimately charm his audience with various extravagant versions of himself.”
G Freddie and Mary Austin had a “unique” and enduring lifetime love,
friendship and admiration for each other which they memorialized with a ring.
G Freddie told his assistant Peter Freestone: “The only friend I’ve got is Mary, and I don’t want anybody else.”
G Freddie’s last relationship was a dedicated and loving relationship
with his partner of 7 years “Jim Hutton.” They had a similar look and even started dressing in the same outfits ..
G Freddie was never legally married to either Mary Austin or Jim Hutton
though he had proposed to Mary years before he embraced his true sexuality.
G Freddie Mercury died of aids in 1991 at his home in England. He was only 45 years of age. Freddie left his estate and most of his fortune and worldly possessions to Mary Austin.
G He was inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame (posthumously) in 2003.
G Freddie’s light will continue to shine and his music to live on through
future generations. Freddie Mercury -- a meteor .. the “King of Queen,” the “Queen of Cats!” Forever.
G Freddie’s “final act” was to stroke his beloved cat, “Delilah.”

Signs Your Pet Needs
It’s late at night, on the weekend or even daylight midweek. Your veterinarian may or may not be open, but your dog or cat is in distress. When MUST you not delay and get him to professional medical help? Hopefully you know animal life-saving skills such as choking management, how to stop bleeding, treat for Shock and Heatstroke and how to perform Cardio Pulmonary Cerebral Resuscitation (if you don’t, visit www.PetSafetyCrusader.com/products/classes/), however… SITUATIONS THAT REQUIRE IMMEDIATE VETERINARY CARE, regardless of what first-aid techniques you perform, include:
Balance Issues Staggering or inability to maintain balance. Paralysis or loss of use of limb. Bleeding Arterial or venous bleeding (severe blood loss), or any bleeding you can’t control within 5 minutes. Coughing up blood or bleeding from nose, eyes, ears, mouth or rectum; blood in urine Eye Injuries & Prolapses (protrusions) Injuries to the eye including sudden blindness, bulging or prolapse (also if to rectum, penis or vagina) Won’t Drink Pet refuses to drink for more than 24 hours. Vomit or Diarrhea (more than twice in 24 hours) or containing blood. Bones Fractures or exposed bones or suspected muscle/ tendon strains or tears
Cardio and/or Pulmonary Arrest Anytime you perform Rescue Breathing and/or CPR (even if pet is resuscitated – CPR isn’t a cure: You haven’t administered anti-dote for poisoning, stopped internal bleeding or cured a disease), or whenever an animal is having difficulty breathing. Trauma Blow to the head, chest or abdomen or anytime an animal has been unconscious Seizure First-time seizure or tremors lasting more than five minutes. In the case of an epileptic animal, a seizure lasting longer than is normal for that pet.
Wounds Larger than 1” in length and/or more than ½” deep including bites and especially those which are prone to abscesses and infections; puncture wounds especially to the chest Poisoning Ingested, inhaled, absorbed including venomous snakes, scorpions, jelly fish and spiders. Shock Depletion of oxygen to the body due to blood loss, trauma, anaphylaxis or pulmonary/cardiac arrest. Capillary Refill Time (CRT) is greater than 2 seconds. Bloat (distended abdomen) Heatstroke or Distress Anytime body temperature has reached 104°F or higher, it is a medical emergency!
Emergency Help Burns (heat, chemical or electrical) Intestinal/Kidney Stoppages Inability to urinate or defecate or obvious train when attempting to do so For any of the above, do calm, effective and immediate first-aid to prevent further injury and make the pet more comfortable, then…GET TO YOUR Veterinarian AT ONCE!
By Denise Fleck, The Pet Safety Crusader™
Excessive panting Frequent or infrequent urination Vomiting/diarrhea/constipation Restlessness Lethargy Change in eating/drinking habits Anything that is not normal for YOUR pet may not be right! Communication with your Veterinarian is always important and you should always feel comfortable seeking out their guidance, expertise and assistance. YOU are the voice for your dog or cat who cannot speak for himself. Be proactive by getting regular check-ups, reading pet food labels, ensuring your pet gets daily exercise and regular grooming and an abundance of quality time spent with you…his or her best friend!
If at any time you notice these Basic Signs of Injury or Illness in your pet, the animal’s health needs to be addressed. Canines are pack animals and it is in their best interest in the wild to not let on when they are hurt, so this often carries down to our domestic pets, especially if you have a multi-dog household. An animal who is injured or weakened can lose his place in the hierarchy, so he’ll do his best to keep symptoms hidden.
Denise Fleck is an award winning author & radio show host, and a Pet First-Aid & CPR instructor who has personally taught 20,000 humans animal life saving skills and millions more via national television appearances. She has authored more than a dozen books including “The Pet Safety Bible,” and offers pet tips Thursdays 3pm Eastern at www.facebook.com/SunnyDogInk. Learn more at www.PetSafetyCrusader.com.
It therefore is your task to seek out anything that is not right with your pet by performing weekly head-to-tail exams at home.

Beverly’s Adventures in Costa Rica by Beverly Houwing
A stunning sunset at Drake Bay looking towards a CaĂąo Island.
Costa Rica, meaning “Rich Coast,” owes its diversity and natural treasures to its contrasting geography, ecological zones, and microclimates. Such geographical diversity provides a place for the world’s most varied ecosystems. Though its size is an area smaller than West Virginia, Costa Rica contains about 6.5% of the world’s biodiversity! Over 25% of the land is designated as national parks and Costa Rica’s rainforests cover over 50% of the country. Rolling mountains and highland cloud forests contrast with 800 miles of Caribbean and Pacific shoreline, creating a country with four main geographical areas: the Tropical Lowlands (Caribbean and Pacific coasts), the Northern Central Plains, the Central Valley and the Northwest Peninsula. Costa Rica is home to lots of stunning species of birds, reptiles and mammals.
