Thirty three times North of England Regional Champion, the Reg Vardy Band was the 2011 winner of the Grand Shield. Formed in 1910 as the Craghead Colliery Band in County Durham, the band was sponsored by Ever Ready in 1968 and in 2003 it signed a new deal with the Reg Vardy Group. Following this, for the first time in its history, it finished in the top ten in every major contest for two consecutive years.

Rothwell Temperance Band Rothwell Temperance is a relatively young band. Formed in 1984, it began contesting in 1989 and quickly made a name for itself at the big contests, winning the 2006 International Masters and the 2009 Grand Shield and Yorkshire Area Championship. It has qualified for the National Championship Finals each year for the last five years.
Yeadon Town Hall
Formed in 1900 in the Cheshire village of Sandbach, the band maintains a world class reputation for providing quality entertainment in the field of brass music. The band’s repertoire includes the full spectrum from light popular music both old and new through operatic, film and light orchestral works to the serious original brass band music performed by outstanding soloists and supported by an enviable collection of fine musicians. Recent highlights have included radio and television work as well as a Scandinavian tour.

Black Dyke Band

With over 150 years of rich musical heritage Black Dyke is the most successful contesting band in the world. Under the inspirational leadership of Music Director Nicholas Childs, and through a unique partnership with Leeds Metropolitan University, the band continues to be at the forefront of the development of the brass band movement. Black Dyke is also the most recorded band in the world, with over 300 recordings to date.

We are pleased to welcome back to the series The Flowers Band. Based in Gloucester, it is now in its 40th year. It rose rapidly up the Championship Section ladder in 1986 where it has since established itself in the top 20 of the Brass Band World Rankings table. The Band records regularly for Radio 2’s Listen To The Band and has appeared on BBC 1’s Songs of Praise alongside continued contest successes.

Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band The Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band was established on the 22 May 1884 in the village of South Elmsall. During the band’s long and successful history, it has won virtually every honour possible, including British Champion and European Champion. The band is fortunate to have many truly world class musicians in its ranks including the multi-award-winning Principal Cornet player Kirsty Abbotts. In the summer of 2011 the band appointed Leigh Baker as its Resident Conductor.

2011 National Champion Band, the Brighouse and Rastrick Band is regarded by many as the best and most consistent ‘public subscription band’ in the world. In its time the majority of premier band championships have been held by ‘Briggus’ whilst the band has also attracted a formidable reputation for highly entertaining concerts for both the general public and brass band connoisseur.

The Leyland Band was established in 1946 in the heart of industrial Lancashire. Now an independent group of some thirty musicians, the band has retained its local connection and proudly bears the name of its home town. 2011 Brass in Concert Champion, the last 30 years have been the most successful in the band’s history, winning prizes at all the major championships. Leyland has rightly earned its reputation as an unrivalled concert entertainer by producing dynamic and unique performances both at home and abroad.

Hepworth Band is the 2012 holder of the Grand Shield, taking the title for the second time in the band’s history. There has been a strong tradition of brass bands and music making in the Holme Valley and Hepworth Band has been a part of this since its formation in 1882. The band continues to enjoy contest success as well as promoting its own annual series of concerts in and around the Huddersfield area.

Wingates Band Wingates Band was formed in 1873 and is based in the village of Westhoughton near Bolton. One of only two bands to achieve the ‘double double’ (winning the British Open and British National Championships in consecutive years), Wingates is one of the finest bands in the country.

Fairey Band was founded in 1937 by employees at the Fairey Aviation Works in Stockport. The Fairey Band achieved much success under its Music Director of 30 years, Harry Mortimer. Since those early days, the Band has been sixteen times British Open Champion and National Champion of Great Britain on nine occasions. The Band is in constant demand for concerts, both at home and abroad. Overseas tours have included performances in Canada, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg.

Cory Band Hailing from the Rhondda Valley, the Cory Band was formed in 1884. World Music Contest Champion 2009 – 2012, Cory is recognised as one of Wales’ finest and most innovative music ensembles. The band is dedicated to new music, raising the profile of the brass band genre and keeping alive music in Wales. It has an active commissioning policy and has performed works by many of Britain’s leading composers. The band’s numerous CD recordings and live concert performances have received worldwide acclaim.
