Brighouse & Rastrick Band
Tredegar Town Band
Black Dyke Band
Grimethorpe Colliery Band
The Brighouse & Rastrick Band is regarded by many as the best and most consistent ‘public subscription band’ in the world. It was formed over 130 years ago through public donations given by the townsfolk of the adjacent villages of Brighouse and Rastrick that face each other across the River Calder in West Yorkshire, England. In its time the majority of premier band championships have been held by ‘Briggus’ whilst the band has also attracted a formidable reputation for highly entertaining concerts for both the general public and brass band connoisseur.
By popular demand we are pleased to welcome back 2013 British Open Champion Tredegar Town Band to our series. With roots going back to 1849, the band has proudly represented its community throughout the brass banding world for 135 years. 2010 was a truly historic year with the band claiming no less than seven major domestic and national titles, culminating with the unique double feat of winning the Grand Shield and the British Open Championship in the same year.
With over 160 years of rich musical heritage Black Dyke is the most successful contesting band in the world. Under the inspirational leadership of Music Director Nicholas Childs, and through a unique partnership with Leeds Metropolitan University, the band continues to be at the forefront of the development of the brass band movement. The 2014 British Open Champion band, Black Dyke is also the most recorded band in the world, with over 300 recordings to date.
The Grimethorpe Colliery band was formed in 1917 as a leisure activity for the workmen at the colliery. International fame came to the band with the making of the 1995 film Brassed Off. The band recently became the first ever brass band to be an ensemble-in-residence at the Royal College of Music in London. In 2014 Grimethorpe enforced its reputation as the UK’s leader in brass band entertainment by winning the Brass in Concert title for a record sixteenth time.

Leyland Band
2015 winner of the Grand Shield, Rothwell Temperance is a relatively young band. Formed in 1984, it began contesting in 1989. The Leyland Band was established in 1946 in the heart of industrial Lancashire. Now an independent group of some thirty musicians, the band has retained its local connection and proudly bears the name of its home town. 2011 Brass in Concert Champion, the last 30 years have been the most successful in the band’s history, winning prizes at all the major championships. Leyland has rightly earned its reputation as an unrivalled concert entertainer by producing dynamic and unique performances both at home and abroad.
