Our season opens with the 2015 Yorkshire Regional Champion and 2016 Grand Shield winner Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band. Formed originally in 1884 in the village of South Elmsall, the band adopted the name of the local colliery in 1923. During the band’s long and successful history, it has won virtually every honour possible, including British Champion and European Champion. The band is fortunate to have many truly world class musicians in its ranks including the multi-award-winning Principal Cornet player Kirsty Abbotts.
The 2015 Grand Shield winner, Rothwell Temperance Band, was formed in 1984 quickly making a name for itself at the big contests winning the 2006 International Masters, qualifying for the National Finals in 2008 and winning the 2009 Grand Shield and Yorkshire Area Championship. The band can also be heard at Leeds Town Hall on Thursday 15 December performing in the Lord Mayor’s Carol Concerts.
The Black Dyke Band is the 2016 Yorkshire Regional Champion and has held the British Open title thirty times, most recently in 2014. The band has always been at the forefront of brass band activity, making one of the earliest brass band recordings in 1904 and embarking on a five month tour of Canada and the United States in 1906. Black Dyke has over 350 recordings to its name and has provided background music to television and film.

Tredegar Town Band We are pleased to welcome nine times Champion Band of Wales Tredegar Town Band back to our series. The musical origins of the band can be traced back to 1849 when a band from the Welsh valley town was reported to have led a procession to celebrate the opening of a new mill for the Tredegar Iron and Coal Company. In 2010 the band was named Band of the Year having claimed no less than seven major domestic and national titles, including the unique double feat of winning the Grand Shield and the British Open Championship in the same year.
Grimethorpe Colliery Band Grimethorpe Colliery Band, holder of the 2015 British Open title was formed in 1917, during the First World War. The band is a British institution; its contest successes remain legendary. Grimethorpe’s diverse concert performances include the FIFA World Cup, BAFTA Awards, BBC Proms, Eurovision and London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, together with a wealth of national and international television and radio appearances and professional recordings. With tours to Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, and concerts and festival appearances throughout Europe, the band’s performance reputation remains unsurpassed.
Fairey Band This season sees a welcome return of the 2015 North West Regional Champion Band, the Fairey Band. Founded in 1937 by a group of employees at the Fairey Aviation Works in Stockport, the band is in constant demand for concerts, both at home and abroad. Overseas tours have included performances in Canada, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg. In recent years, the band has enjoyed further recognition outside the confines of the Brass Band movement, with its involvement in the ‘Acid Brass’ project.
The Brighouse & Rastrick Band is regarded by many as the best and most consistent ‘public subscription band’ in the world. In its time the majority of premier band championships have been held by ‘Briggus’ whilst the band has also attracted a formidable reputation for highly entertaining concerts for both the general public and brass band connoisseur. The band was formed over 130 years ago through public donations given by the townsfolk of the adjacent villages of Brighouse and Rastrick that face each other across the River Calder in West Yorkshire, England.

Hammonds Saltaire Band The origins of the Hammonds Saltaire Band can be traced back to 1855 when Sir Titus Salt formed the Saltaire Band as a leisure activity for the workers in his model village. After many years of success as the Hammonds Sauce Works Band, under the legendary Geoffrey Whitham, the present day ensemble carries the names of both important parts of its history.
