Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band
Black Dyke Band
Brighouse & Rastrick Band
The Black Dyke Band is the 2017 Yorkshire Regional Champion and has held the British Open title thirty times, most recently in 2014. The band has always been at the forefront of brass band activity, making one of the earliest brass band recordings in 1904 and embarking on a five month tour of Canada and the United States in 1906. Black Dyke has over 350 recordings to its name and has provided background music for television and film.
The Brighouse & Rastrick Band is regarded by many as the best and most consistent ‘public subscription band’ in the world. In its time the majority of premier band championships have been held by ‘Briggus’ whilst the band has also attracted a formidable reputation for highly entertaining concerts for both the general public and brass band connoisseur.
Our season opens with the 2016 Grand Shield winner Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band. Formed originally in 1884 in the village of South Elmsall, the band adopted the name of the local colliery in 1923. During the band’s long and successful history, it has won virtually every honour possible, including British Champion and European Champion. The band is fortunate to have many truly world class musicians in its ranks including the multi-award-winning Principal Cornet player Kirsty Abbotts.

foden’s band We welcome back to the series the Foden’s Band, 2017 winner of the North West Area Competition for a record twentieth time. Formed in 1900 in the Cheshire village of Sandbach, the band maintains a world-class reputation for providing quality entertainment in the field of brass music with a traditional and unique style. Highlights include radio and television work as well as tours to Italy, Switzerland, America and Scandinavia. The band was recently crowned Tameside Whit Friday Champion for the sixteenth time in seventeen years.
9 December 2017
Flowers Band We are pleased to welcome back to the series the current West of England champion band, The Flowers Band. Based in Gloucester the band rose rapidly up the Championship Section ladder in 1986 where it has since established itself in the top 20 of the Brass Band World rankings table. The Band records regularly for Radio 2’s Listen to the Band and has appeared on BBC 1’s Songs of Praise alongside continued contest successes.
10 February 2018
Grimethorpe Colliery Band Grimethorpe Colliery Band was formed in 1917 as a leisure activity for the workmen of the colliery. The band is a British institution; its contest successes remain legendary. Grimethorpe’s diverse concert performances include those at the FIFA World Cup, BAFTA Awards, BBC Proms, Eurovision and London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, together with a wealth of national and international television and radio appearances and professional recordings. With tours to Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, and concerts and festival appearances throughout Europe, the band’s performance reputation remains unsurpassed.
The band was formed over 130 years ago through public donations given by the townsfolk of the adjacent villages of Brighouse and Rastrick that face each other across the River Calder in West Yorkshire. Today, it still continues to be supported through public subscriptions and its own fundraising efforts.
28 April 2018
Rothwell Temperance Band The 2015 Grand Shield winner, Rothwell Temperance Band, was formed in 1984, quickly making a name for itself at the big contests winning the 2006 International Masters, qualifying for the National Finals in 2008 and winning the 2009 Grand Shield and Yorkshire Area Championship. The band can also be heard at Leeds Town Hall on Thursday 14 December performing in the Lord Mayor’s Carol Concerts.

Leyland Band The Leyland Band was established in 1946 in the heart of industrial Lancashire. Now an independent group of some thirty musicians, the band has retained its local connection and proudly bears the name of its home town. 2011 Brass in Concert Champion, the last 30 years have been the most successful in the band’s history, winning prizes at all the major championships.
