David Greed has been Leader of the Orchestra of Opera North since its inception in 1978. He is well known throughout the area as a soloist and chamber player. Katherine New first joined Opera North in 1991, becoming Section Leader of Second Violins in 1998. After a busy life freelancing and playing in every orchestra and ensemble you could possibly think of, David Aspin joined as Section Leader of Violas in 2007. Jessica Burroughs is currently Principal Cello having freelanced with the orchestra for many years as well as having guest led many other orchestras in the UK and abroad. All members of the quartet are crazy about chamber music so it seemed the most natural thing in the world to form a quartet, and start to immerse themselves in the gigantic world of the quartet repertoire.

Howard Breakspear viola Michael Cleaver piano Weber/Cleaver Im Forsthaus Brahms Gestillte Sehnsucht Brahms Geistliches Wiegenlied Debussy Sonata Duruflé Prélude, récitatif et variations Welcome to a programme of gorgeous music highlighting German and French music written between 1821 and 1928. Weber’s romantic opera Der Freischütz appeared in 1821. Im Forsthaus is a new one-movement concert work showcasing three favourite numbers from the opera. In 1884 Brahms composed two songs that feature a delicate interplay between voice and viola. A beguiling instrumental version introduces the sensuous timbre of the alto flute, that perfectly captures the warmth of Brahms’ vocal part. Debussy intended his exquisite work for flute, viola and harp to be one of a set of six sonatas. He was, however, able to complete only three before his death in 1918. This beautifully restrained piece, here re-cast with piano, is a highlight of the impressionist repertoire. The concert ends with Duruflé’s only chamber work, a powerful and sonorous trio, written in 1928. His love of Gregorian chant informs the theme and ensuing variations, and a final burst of implacable energy carries the piece to an exciting conclusion.
