Welcome to another exciting season of lunchtime chamber recitals at The Venue, featuring some of the most talented young musicians at the start of their professional careers alongside students from the UK’s leading conservatoires and junior colleges.

The year’s season begins with a recital given by the exciting and versatile South African cellist Abel Selaocoe. Our relaxed performance in October features the Slidin’ About trombone quartet and in January the Block4 recorder quartet presents a mixture of Contemporary and Baroque music. Solo piano recitals are always a firm favourite in the season, and this year we have performances by Jean-Sélim Abdelmoula, Ariel Lanyi and Liga Korne. Whether you work in Leeds city centre, are a student or a senior member of the community, Leeds Lunchtime Chamber Series offers the perfect midday respite with a chance to hear world-class performances for free!

Debussy Cello Sonata Ravel Piece in the Habanera style Shchedrin In the Style of Albéniz James MacMillan Kiss on Wood Britten Cello Sonata Giovanni Sollima Lamentatio South African cellist Abel Selaocoe is a versatile musician who is interested in exploring the capacity of the cello across genres, from collaborating with beatboxers, folk and world musicians to giving concerto performances and solo classical recitals. Abel has worked as a soloist with numerous orchestras throughout South Africa, having performed a wide range of concerto repertoire with Kwa-Zulu Natal Philharmonic, Johannesburg Philharmonic, Cape Town Philharmonic and Randburg Symphony Orchestras. Making his mark in some of London’s prestigious venues, Abel made his solo debut at Wigmore Hall as part of the RNCM Gold Medal Winners’ concert and is looking forward to playing Elgar Cello Concerto at Cadogan Hall with The New London Orchestra. Abel has appeared with the MultiStory Orchestra working closely with cellist Matthew Barley to make classical music accessible for a diverse audience. He is also a member of the Chineke! Orchestra playing at Royal Festival Hall and in the BBC Proms.

Tim Jansa Three Miniatures Jolivet Pastorales de Noël Debussy Sonata for flute, bassoon and harp Piazzolla Oblivion: Milonga Lenta The Meltemi Ensemble has chosen to explore the possibility of adapting some existing pieces for performance by flute, bassoon and harp, as well as performing a beautiful piece composed by Jolivet, originally written for this combination. In honour of the centenary of the composer's death, the central work in the programme is Debussy's sonata for flute, viola and harp, with the viola part transcribed for bassoon. Two shorter pieces accompany the Debussy and Jolivet. The first is a work by German-American composer, Tim Jansa (to whom we would like to extend our grateful thanks for permitting us to adapt his piece), entitled Three Miniatures for flute, bassoon and piano. This atmospheric piece, originally entitled Three Nocturnes, evokes images of night-time through a sombre song, a dialogue of birdsong in the dark and a night-time journey. The second piece is Oblivion by Astor Piazzolla, written in 1984 for the Italian film Enrico IV (Henry IV) and subsequently arranged for many different combinations of instruments.

He has played Principal Clarinet and bass clarinet in the Academy Symphony Orchestra under acclaimed conductors Oliver Knussen and Edward Gardner. James is an active chamber musician, performing several recitals for the Academy’s concert series, and in summer 2018 he enjoyed being a participant in the Encuentro de Santander in Spain as a part of its Orchestral and Chamber Music Academy. Gabrielė Bekerytė is a pianist currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London under the tuition of Professor Tatiana Sarkissova. Throughout Gabriele’s years of playing she has won national and international competitions in Europe including Les Rencontres Internationales des Jeunes Pianistes in Belgium and the 59th international piano competition in honour of Clara Schumann; Grotrian-Steinweg 2013 in Germany.

Chloë is Principal Flute of both the Junior RNCM Symphony Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Joe Orme is eighteen years old and has been playing classical guitar for ten years, recently passing his Grade 8 with Distinction. He currently receives lessons from Jeremy Bleasdale at the Junior RNCM, which he joined in 2015.

As well as performing its own innovative arrangements, the quartet has commissioned new works. It won the Foden’s Quartet Competition and has been a finalist in both the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble Prize and the Royal Over-Seas League Chamber Music Competition. Slidin’ About has also been featured on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune. Slidin’ About is proud to be active in musical education. It has worked with young people extensively across the country, including in Pupil Referral Units and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities schools. The quartet has also worked with the Live Music Now charity since 2013 and continues to develop a range of musical experiences and performances. The relaxed performance has a less formal atmosphere. Audience noise and movement in the auditorium are acceptable. Everyone is welcome.

Born in Switzerland in 1991, JeanSélim studied with Christian Favre at the Lausanne Conservatoire, and with Ronan O’Hora at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, graduating in 2016 with a Distinction. During 2014/15 he held the Rebanks Piano Fellowship at the Glenn Gould School in Toronto and in 2018 he won the Lili Boulanger Memorial Fund Prize. In 2016 Jean-Sélim was invited by Sir András Schiff to give solo recitals at major venues in Europe and the USA as part of his Building Bridges concert series, supporting new talents. A committed chamber musician, Jean-Sélim has attended IMS Prussia Cove, undertaken a residency in Banff, and in 2016 he won the Premi de Música de Cambra Montserrat Alavedra ensemble award. Jean-Sélim has performed widely in Europe including at Wigmore Hall, the Palau de la Música (Barcelona), the Sendesaal (Bremen), Lucerne Festival, Lavaux Classics, Rolston Hall (Banff), Trasimeno Festival and Festspiele MecklenburgVorpommern. In 2016 he made his debut at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall in New York.

The Quintet has a busy concert diary which takes it to various parts of the country, and this year it has been invited to give a recital as part of the Chipping Campden International Music Festival. The Inventus Quintet has entered various competitions, reaching the final in the 2017 Sylvia Cleaver Chamber Music Prize and winning the 2018 Leamington Music Prize: a cheque of £1000 and a concert in the 2018/19 Leamington Music Winter Season. This lively and friendly ensemble offers repertoire that ranges from the Classical era to present day compositions. The Quintet aims to share and expand the knowledge of chamber music, and offers outreach to schools and workshops to all ages.

Cristina Ocaña Rosado violin Elizabeth Wyly viola Andy Fairley cello Genna Spinks double bass Annette Saunders piano Louise Farrenc Piano Quintet No 2 Rebecca Clarke Shorter Pieces Louise Farrenc (1804–75) was a French composer and pianist who during her life achieved considerable fame. She became Professor of Piano at the Paris Conservatoire but was paid less than her male counterparts until after the success of her wonderful Nonet when she demanded, and received, equal pay. Her music disappeared from view after her death and has only recently been rediscovered in concerts and recordings. As well as piano music she composed orchestral and choral works but it is her chamber music that has drawn the most attention. The Second Piano Quintet (scored for the slightly unusual violin, viola, cello, double bass and piano) is a mature work that is elegantly tuneful and of varied interest. Rebecca Clarke (1886–1979) was an English composer and violist who attracted much attention for the chamber music she composed (often featuring the viola). Like Farrenc, her music was largely forgotten after her death but her powerful Viola Sonata has led the way to a new audience. She composed many beautiful miniatures for mixed chamber ensembles with haunting references to English and Scottish folk music.

Eva Thorarinsdottir was born in Reykjavík, Iceland, and began playing the violin at the age of three. She is a graduate of the Yehudi Menuhin School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music where she studied with Maciej Rakowski. She graduated from the college with an International Artist Diploma in Solo Performance. Recently a Nordic Soloist Prize finalist, Eva is also a prize winner in numerous International Violin Competitions including winning the third prize as well as the Audience Prize in the prestigious International Carl Nielsen Violin Competition in 2012. Eva has appeared as a soloist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican performing Max Richter’s Memoryhouse. She has also performed with the Manchester Camerata, Odense Symphony Orchestra, Iceland Symphony Orchestra and recently performed with Sinfonia Cymru at the Vibrate Festival in Brasov. Currently, Eva is focusing on a project which will see her recording the complete Bach Sonatas and Partitas whilst also exploring contemporary music and folk tunes from her native Iceland. Eva plays on an 1845 Joseph Rocca violin, previously owned by the great Alfredo Campoli.

Sri Kamalbir Singh violin John Ball tabla Midday Mantra Gayaki South Asian Arts-uk and Leeds International Concert Season join forces once again to present an annual recital full of warmth and escapism to transport you to distant lands away from mid-winter blues. International artist and violin maestro, Sri Kamalbir Singh will share his take on the art of Gayaki – music that emulates the human voice in its rendition of Raags, framed within a specific time cycle provided by John Ball on tabla.

A Schubertiade Programme to include duets, quartets and ensemble works by Schubert Each year a small group of the Royal Academy of Music’s most accomplished performers of the song repertoire is selected to form the Academy Song Circle. Since its inception in 2004, Song Circle has given over 50 concerts in venues including Wigmore Hall, the Austrian Cultural Forum, the Oxford Lieder Festival, the German Embassy, the Institut français, the Chelsea Schubert Festival, Kings Place, the Bolivar Hall, the National Gallery, the Academy’s Duke’s Hall, the David Josefowitz Recital Hall, and in private houses across London and farther afield. Valentine’s Day is celebrated each year at the Academy with a programme of English, French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish love songs; and there is an annual Schubertiade, given by candlelight and in 19th century costume, devoted to the songs of Franz Schubert. The Song Circle has made three CD recordings: Songs of Spring, Songs of Seduction and Goethe’s Girls and Mörike’s Men.

Having studied with Ashley Solomon, Julien Feltrin and Maria Martinez Ayerza, Block4 presents a dynamic approach to contemporary consort music as well as offering a captivating interpretation of music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Alongside their love of contemporary repertoire, Block4 take an inquisitive approach to Renaissance music, frequently performing little-known works and creating their own arrangements for recorder quartet. They use the full range of renaissance recorders, from soprano to contra-bass, in order to capture the vast number of timbral and dynamic possibilities in consort playing.

After the concert Tim Lowe teaches an open masterclass as part of Pro Corda’s programme in celebration of its fiftieth anniversary year. All welcome. Tim Lowe is quickly emerging as one of the new generation of outstanding young British cellists. He is established as a recitalist and chamber musician, appearing regularly in festivals throughout the UK and Europe, and is currently Guest Principal Cello of the English Chamber Orchestra with whom he tours in the UK and internationally. Andrew Quartermain is CEO and Artistic Director of Pro Corda Trust, one of the largest music charities and course providers in Europe. As a pianist, Andrew has collaborated with some of the world’s leading artists and was a prize winner at the Guildhall where he studied after Cambridge. Andrew’s teaching stretches from coaching some of the UK’s most gifted instrumentalists to specialist work for children with autism through to an international film series for Adult Learners.

Frank Dupree Bridge Pensiero and Allegro Appassionato Britten Lachrymae York Bowen Viola Sonata No 1 Born in London in 1995, Timothy Ridout studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Martin Outram, graduating with the Queen’s Award for Excellence. He was selected by Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT) in 2016 and in the same year joined the Kronberg Academy in Germany, where he currently studies with Nobuko Imai. Over the last two years Timothy has performed across Europe, including at the Verbier Academy & Festival and Schloss Elmau, the Munich Gasteig, the Bad Kissinger Sommer, Schubertiade (Austria) and Beethoven Bonn Festivals. He has attended IMS Prussia Cove Open Chamber Music and performed with the Nash Ensemble. Solo appearances include performances with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Strings, European Union Chamber, Zagreb Soloists and Oxford Symphony Orchestras and a special performance of Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante with Maxim Vengerov. He has participated in masterclasses with Christoph Eschenbach, Sir Simon Rattle and Gidon Kremer, among many others. Timothy plays on a viola by Peregerino di Zanetto c1565–75, generously on a temporary loan from Beares International Violin Society.

Ariel Lanyi, born in 1997, began piano lessons with Lea Agmon just before his fifth birthday and made An exciting and colourful exploration his orchestral debut at the age of of the cultural sympathy and musical seven. Since then, he has given numerous recitals in London, Paris styles of the two countries on either (including Radio France), Rome, side of the Pyrenees: Prague, and Brussels. Webern Langsamer Satz Schubert String Quartet No 14 (Death and the Maiden) The Opera North String Quartet gave its premier recital in the Howard Assembly Room, Leeds Grand Theatre, in May 2011, recent appointments to the Orchestra of Opera North having created a wonderful opportunity for such an ensemble to be formed. David Greed has been Leader of the Orchestra of Opera North since its inception in 1978. He is well known throughout the area as a soloist and chamber player. Katherine New first joined Opera North in 1991, becoming Section Leader of Second Violins in 1998. After a busy life freelancing and playing in every orchestra and ensemble you could possibly think of, David Aspin joined as Section Leader of Violas in 2007. Jessica Burroughs is now Principal Cello having freelanced with the orchestra for many years as well as having guest led many other orchestras in the UK and abroad. All members of the quartet are crazy about chamber music so it seemed the most natural thing in the world to form a quartet, and start to immerse themselves in the gigantic world of the quartet repertoire.

Owen Bunting started playing the guitar at the age of eight years old and in 2008 was awarded a scholarship under the UK Government ‘Music and Dance Scheme’ to study at the Purcell School for Young Musicians. In 2012, Owen played at an Investiture Ceremony at Buckingham Palace in the presence of Prince Charles and in the same year gave the UK premiere of Gabriel Jackson’s Ave Regina Caelorum for electric guitar and choir at Hampton Court Palace. The following year, Owen won a chamber music competition to perform Takemitsu’s Toward the Sea for flute and guitar at the Wigmore Hall in London. After being awarded a Presidential Scholarship, Owen also studied at San Francisco Conservatory of Music with world renowned guitarists David Tanenbaum and Sergio Assad. He went on to finish his undergraduate studies at the Royal Northern College of Music under the tutelage of Craig Ogden and is currently studying for a master’s degree at the same institution.

Formed of current postgraduate students at the Guildhall School of Music, the Mithras Piano Trio came together in 2017 under the guidance of Matthew Jones, Carole Presland and Ursula Smith. As well as benefitting from tuition with members of the Endellion Quartet, it has also received regular coaching from András Keller, and was selected to perform in masterclasses with Ralf Gothóni and Levon Chilingirian. Ionel, Leo and Dominic, all scholarship holders at GSMD, are experienced collaborators, having appeared in the Barbican, City of London Festival, Harmos Festival Portugal, and Orpheus and Bacchus Festival. Individually they have had international successes including at the Concours International de Piano d'Epinal, the Imola International Piano Awards, the Orpheus Musician of the Year Competition, the Brant International Piano Competition and Bromsgrove International Musicians' Competition. In April the Trio won second prize at the First Intercollegiate Piano Trio Competition, and it was chosen to perform in the inaugural Chamber Music Festival at GSMD in July 2018.

The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Guitar Quartet is comprised of specially selected current members from the RCS’ illustrious guitar department. Its members are chosen from the BMus, MMus and DPerf programmes and come from the four corners of the globe. The Quartet presents an exciting mixture of guitar music, both arranged by the group and original works written for guitar quartet.

Formed at the Royal College of Music in 2013, the B-L Piano Duo is on a mission to play the creepiest, craziest music it can get its hands on. Bertram and Lynette have worked with world-renowned composers as diverse as David Lang and Michael Finnissy, and have also given the premieres of several pieces written for them – among them, works by fiercely original young composers like Nathanael Gubler, Amy Bryce, Ray Leung and Ernest Tay. They were winners of the prestigious Royal Over-Seas League Competition (Ensemble Category) in 2017.

The programme will feature music by Mahler, Bizet and Serbian guitarist and composer Dusan Bogdanovish
