Welcome to another exciting season of lunchtime chamber recitals at The Venue, featuring some of the most talented young musicians at the start of their professional careers alongside students from the UK’s leading conservatoires and junior colleges.

This season’s highlights include a visit from the 2014 BBC Young Musician of the Year winner Martin James Bartlett, David Waterman of the Endellion Quartet performing a duo recital with pianist Mishka Rushdie Momen, a performance of Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet by Arcturus and solo piano recitals by international prize-winners Alexander Panfilov and Daniel Lebhardt. Whether you work in Leeds city centre, are a student or a senior member of the community, Leeds Lunchtime Chamber Series offers the perfect midday respite with a chance to hear world-class performances for free! Each concert lasts fifty minutes so that it can easily fit into your lunch break or daily routine. Beethoven Cello Sonata No 4 Rachmaninov Cello Sonata Jamal began his musical studies aged five with his first teacher and beloved grandfather Kara Aliyev in Turkey. He moved to the Yehudi Menuhin School in 2008, with a full scholarship to study with Professor Thomas Carroll with whom he continues to study at the Royal College of Music. He is the First Prize winner of four competitions; Trakya International Competition (2002), V Antonio Janigro International Competition (2004), Muriel Taylor Cello Competition (2014) and Bromsgrove International Competition (2015). Jamal enjoys performing as a solo artist and a chamber musician in Europe and Asia. His recent performances include prestigious venues such as Wigmore Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Windsor Castle, Menuhin Hall, Forbidden City Concert Hall (Beijing), Reims Cathedral, The Arts Parliament House (Singapore), The Presidential Concert Hall (Turkey), Istrian Assembly Hall (Croatia), The Saanen Church (Menuhin Festival) in Gstaad – Switzerland and Rachmaninov Concert Hall (Moscow). His debut CD with Anna Fedorova on a Russian Theme with Champs Hill Records in London was recorded in March 2015. Jamal plays on a cello by Gabrielli (1756).

Mozart String Quartet No 3 Janáček String Quartet No 1 (Kreutzer) The formation of the Atesh Quartet in 2014 was brought about by the musicians’ mutual love of chamber music and their studies at the Royal Northern College of Music. Although recently formed, the members of the quartet have previously had a wealth of chamber music experience with various other groups and have travelled across the world in the process. They have also enjoyed performing in some of the UK’s most prestigious venues. During their studies they achieved first place in the Chamber Ensemble of the Year, Nossek, Hirsch and Rosamund prizes at the RNCM as well as individually leading the RNCM orchestras in numerous performances. In their solo careers the members of the Atesh Quartet have enjoyed the privilege of performing a number of concertos as well as solo recitals at the Cardiff Millennium Centre and Steinway Hall. Individually they freelance as orchestral musicians with the BBC Philharmonic, Hallé, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Manchester Camerata and Royal Scottish National Orchestras.

Ruairidh started playing the violin at the age of seven and has recently passed her Grade 8 with distinction. She also loves jazz and traditional music. Aged seventeen, Amy is from Glasgow and started playing the violin at the age of five. She discovered traditional music at Glasgow Fiddle Workshop at the age of twelve. Ryan, from Milngavie, is sixteen years old and studies accordion with Djordje Gajic and traditional piano with James Ross. He recently passed his Grade 8 classical piano with Distinction. Aimée is a sixth form student at the Glasgow Gaelic School and for the past eleven years has studied harp and clàrsach as part of the Junior Conservatoire. Perle, originally from France, is seventeen years old and is living in Glasgow. She started learning the violin at the age of five and has been studying at the Junior Conservatoire since 2006.

Born in Moscow, Alexander Panfilov began piano lessons at the age of six and later studied at the Gnessin Music School in Moscow. He then attended the Moscow State Conservatory under Professor Andrei Diev and in 2012 he went on to study at the Royal Northern College of Music with Graham Scott under a full scholarship. During his studies at the RNCM Alexander won many of the College’s major prizes, including the Gold Medal for the top performance. Alexander has performed in concerts throughout Europe and the USA. As a concerto soloist he has played with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Carlo Coccia Symphony orchestras, amongst others. Festival appearances include the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, the Schwarzwald Music Festival in Germany and the Ribble Valley Piano Week. Alexander has won numerous international competitions, including the James Mottram International Piano Competition (2014), the Taranto Competition, the Brant Competition Birmingham (2013) and the Premio Accademia Romano (2014). Alexander has taken part in master classes by Naum Starkman, Robert Levin, Martin Roscoe, Michel Beroff, Richard Goode, and Andrea Bonatta among others.

Granados Danza No 11 Castelnuovo-Tedesco Lucy is seventeen years old and is Sonatina Canonica currently studying for her AS levels. She began playing the flute at the Lennon & McCartney/S Assad age of six and now studies with She’s Leaving Home Helen Rimmer at the Junior RNCM, of Ryan Generator which she has been a member since September 2008. She is currently the principal flautist of the National Youth Chamber Orchestra. Alex is sixteen years old and lives in Stockport. He is currently in Year 11, studying for his GCSEs at Stockport Grammar School. He began studying the double bass with Geth Griffith when he was seven. Alex commenced his studies at Junior RNCM three years ago at the same time that he became one of the youngest players to gain a place in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. William was born in 1999 and began learning the piano at the age of four with Sandy Bowen and later with Dianne O’Hara. He became a student at Junior RNCM in 2013 studying piano with Jonathan Middleton, for which he received a scholarship from the ABRSM. William took his Grade 8 piano and achieved the exceptional mark of 144/150.

The Nexus Guitar Duo was formed at the Royal Northern College of Music in September 2013. Since its debut performance at the Holden Art Gallery in the Manchester School of Art for the RNCM’s Day of Guitar, the duo has given numerous performances across Manchester and further afield. The duo has performed at the Buxton Pavilion Arts Centre and in the Ribchester Music Festival. Recently, it also performed in a masterclass for the renowned Katona Twins guitar duo. Initially self-taught as a jazz and classical guitarist, James is on the conservatoire’s accelerated three-year course where his tutor in classical guitar is Craig Ogden. Bradley is in his second year at the RNCM and studies classical guitar with Craig Ogden. The Nexus Guitar Duo appears by kind permission of the RNCM.

Charlotte is part of the established Aurous Quartet performing regularly around the UK. She hopes to further her studies at Master’s level in Europe with the aim of working alongside leading saxophonists. The Hamstead/Cliffe Quintet was formed whilst the musicians were studying at Leeds College of Music on the BA Music (jazz pathway) course. In the ensemble’s final year it focussed on classic Hard Bop tunes and music of modern bands inspired heavily by jazz, all under the guidance of Rob Mitchell.

Peaslee Arrows of Time Brahms Four Serious Songs Castérède Sonatina Jongen Aria and Polonaise The youngest ever winner of BBC Young Musician in 2008, trombonist Peter Moore studied with Philip Goodwin at Chetham’s School of Music, and with Ian Bousfield. In 2014 he was appointed co-principal trombone of the London Symphony Orchestra, a role he performs alongside an Advanced Performance programme at the Royal Academy of Music. As a soloist Peter has appeared with the BBC National Orchestra Wales, Northern Chamber, the Polish Chamber Orchestra at the Rheingau and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festivals, and at the Slide Factory in Rotterdam. In 2010 his recording for Chandos of the Gregson Concerto with the BBC Concert Orchestra was released. Passionate about pushing the boundaries of the trombone and bringing it to a wider audience, Peter has given recitals at major venues and festivals. He has toured extensively in Australia and New Zealand and in 2015 has been invited as soloist to SliderAsia in Hong Kong.

Webern Two Pieces Brahms Viola Sonata Op 120, No 1 Alexander Krein Three Ornaments Hindemith Viola Sonata Adam Newman graduated with first class honours from the Royal Academy of Music where he studied with Philip Dukes and György Pauk. He also studied in the class of Tatjana Masurenko at the Hochschule für Musik in Leipzig. During his time at the Academy, Adam had considerable success in both competitions and recitals, including a Sir John Barbirolli Foundation Award and the Duchess of Cornwall/English Chamber Music Award. He was a recent finalist at the Windsor International String Competition where he was awarded the Bishop Instruments and Bows Prize. Adam enjoys working with the London Steve Reich Ensemble, English Chamber Orchestra, Razumovsky Ensemble, London Conchord Ensemble and the Aronowitz Ensemble. Alexander Karpeyev has been a major prize-winner in international piano competitions, including first prizes at the 2007 Dudley International Piano Competition and the Norah Sande Award 2008. In 2008 he was awarded The Worshipful Company of Musicians’ Silver Medal.

Programme to include songs by Liszt and Loewe. Each year a small group of the Royal Academy of Music’s most accomplished performers of the song repertoire is selected to form the Academy Song Circle. Since its inception in 2004, Song Circle has given over 50 concerts in venues including Wigmore Hall, The Austrian Cultural Forum, the Oxford Lieder Festival, The German Embassy, the Institut Français, the Chelsea Schubert Festival, Kings Place, the Bolivar Hall, the National Gallery, the Academy’s Duke’s Hall, the David Josefowitz Recital Hall, and in private houses across London and farther afield. Valentine’s Day is celebrated each year at the Academy with a programme of English, French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish love songs; and there is an annual Schubertiade, given by candlelight and in 19th century costume, devoted to the songs of Franz Schubert. Song Circle has made three CD recordings: Songs of Spring, Songs of Seduction and Goethe’s Girls and Mörike’s Men.

Brahms Three Intermezzi Liszt Nuages Gris Liszt Piano Sonata in B minor Daniel Lebhardt started piano lessons at the age of six, and from the age of nine attended the Special School of the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, studying with István Gulyás and Gyöngyi Keveházi. Since 2010 he has attended the Royal Academy of Music where he first worked with Christopher Elton, and since 2012 has been in the studio of Pascal Nemirovski. He has played in masterclasses for Alfred Brendel, Leslie Howard, Ferenc Rados and Mikhail Voskresensky. He won the First Prize at the Russian Music International Piano Competition in California, the Citta di Gorizia International Piano Competition in Italy, the Kosˇice International Piano Competition in Slovakia and at the Carl Filtsch International Piano Competition in Romania. He has given recitals at Wigmore Hall, Béla Bartók Memorial House in Budapest, Senate House in London, and Musée du Louvre in Paris as well as giving concerts in Hungary, Austria and Japan. Daniel is also very active as a chamber musician and performed at the BBC Proms in a Composer Portrait of Olga Neuwirth, which was recorded and broadcast by BBC Radio 3. He has also performed with Mark van de Wiel, Principal Clarinet of the Philharmonia Orchestra, in the Clarinet Sonatas by Brahms.

Niklas Walentin began playing violin at the age of six. He has a unique style of playing which combines the best in both tradition and innovation. He is currently taking his Master’s Degree of Performing Arts with Professor Sergej Krylov in Lugano and is also studying with professor Eszter Haffner at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Pavel Timofejevsky is one of the most versatile young musicians of his generation. He began his music studies at the age of six at the Gnessin Music School in Moscow. In 1995 he moved to London to continue his studies at the Purcell School and from 2002-08 at the Royal Academy of Music with Professor Tatiana Sarkissova.

Katherine New violin Claire Osborne violin Howard Breakspear viola Judith Burgin cello Michael Cleaver piano Bridge Phantasy for String Quartet Shostakovich Piano Quintet Bridge forged his reputation writing chamber music and, like several other English composers of the early 20th century, adopted in some of his works the otherwise defunct 17th century form called Phantasy. Bridge’s late-romantic take on this one-movement format is a great example of his art and comprises two lyrical, passionate outpourings framing a mercurial scherzo section. The resulting Phantasy Quartet is a gem somehow lost in the mists of time but deserving to be much more widely heard. Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet has maintained its hold on audiences ever since its first performance in 1940. It is in turn imposing, thoughtful, exhilarating and playful. Like Bridge he puts old forms to new purposes – the first two movements (prelude and fugue) are undoubtedly inspired by the music of JS Bach. Yet the fugue subject sounds, at the same time, very much like a Russian folksong. Spanish influences inject new colour into the scherzo and introduce an intense bolero-like vigour during the finale.

Pianist Ilya is currently studying for a Master of Performance degree at the Royal College of Music under the tutelage of Professor Vanessa Latarche. He previously studied with the ‘People’s Artist of Russia’ Zinaida Ignatieva at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory and Victoria Soifer at Samara Musical College in Russia. Since 2014, Ilya has been supported by the Henry Wood Trust and became a scholar of the Future of Russia Foundation. He has been awarded prizes at competitions such as the International Chopin Piano Competition in Hannover, Germany and the Fifth Tbilisi International Piano Competition in Tbilisi, Georgia, where he was the recipient of the Grand Prix and five special prizes. Ilya has participated in masterclasses with artists such as Paul Gulda, Dmitri Bashkirov, Leslie Howar and Lang Lang. He performs extensively as a soloist and chamber musician.

Joshua Wilson bassoon TBC piano Programme to include music by Schumann, Dutilleux and Olav Berg. Joshua is currently in his third year of undergraduate study at the Royal Academy of Music, having been awarded the ABRSM Scholarship to study bassoon with Amy Harman and John Orford, as well as contrabassoon with David Chatterton. Before this, he studied with Nicholas Hunka and Shelly Organ at the Royal College of Music Junior Department, where he received the Sally Wainwright Woodwind Prize. An experienced chamber and orchestral musician, Joshua was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain for three years and has given performances in major concert halls across the country. As a member of the Aether Ensemble, Joshua was involved in the Festival de Inverno, Campos do Jordão in Brazil, where the ensemble gave several performances and also received lessons from arguably the most famous bassoonist of the last forty years, Klaus Thunemann.

Beethoven Variations on Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen Schumann Fantasiestücke Schubert Fantasie in C for solo piano (Wanderer Fantasie) Brahms Sonata for Cello and Piano No 1 David Waterman was born into a musical family in Leeds and studied philosophy for six years at Trinity College, Cambridge, becoming a Research Scholar, MA and PhD, and a tutor to philosophy undergraduates. Simultaneously, he studied cello privately with Martin Lovett, William Pleeth and Jane Cowan. In 1979 David founded the Endellion String Quartet which has played all over the world, broadcast countless times on BBC Radio and TV, and recorded for EMI and Virgin Classics. Mishka Rushdie Momen, born in London 1992, studied with Joan Havill and Imogen Cooper at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and also with Alfred Brendel and Richard Goode. She has twice been invited by András Schiff to participate in his summer class in Gstaad as part of the Menuhin Festival. In November 2014 Mishka was unanimously voted the 1st Prize winner of the Dudley International Piano Competition and performed Bartók’s Third Concerto with the CBSO conducted by Michael Seal.

Mozart Voi Che Sapete from The Marriage of Figaro Mozart Non So Più from The Marriage of Figaro Jim Vanderspar studied at the Royal Mozart Una Donna a Quindici College of Music with Enno Senft Anni from Così fan tutte and is now a Master’s student at the Gluck Che farò senza Euridice Luzern Hochschule fu ¨r Musik with from Orfeo ed Euridice Božo Paradžik. During his time at the Royal College of Music, he played Puccini O Mio Babbino Caro with such conductors as Bernard from Gianni Schicchi Haitink and Sir Roger Norrington. In 2014, Jim was given the opportunity to play with some of the world’s most renowned orchestral musicians in the World Orchestra for Peace in remembrance of World War I. Jim has been successful in international competitions reaching the final in the first ‘Golden Bass’ International Double Bass competition in Ukraine and winning the best interpretation prize for ‘Contrabass Dance’ by Bohdana Froylak. He has also won the first prize in the RCM Double Bass competition in both 2012 and 2014. As a soloist, Jim has played the Koussevitzky Double Bass concerto with the L’viv Music Academy and Bottesini Passione Amorosa together with Rodrigo Moro Martin with the Salamanca Youth Orchestra. He also had the honour of performing this in Wigmore Hall in the RCM Rising Stars series.

piano accompanist Alim was born in Kazakhstan in 1998 and began learning the piano at the age of five. He joined The Purcell School in 2010 and studies piano with Tessa Nicholson. Georgia started singing at the age of nine. In 2014 she won a scholarship to attend The Purcell School of Music. Ruth was born in Germany in 1998. In September 2014 she joined The Purcell School, where she studies with Berent Korfker. Daniel read Music at St Anne’s College, Oxford and the Royal Academy of Music. He is a staff accompanist for the Junior Royal Academy of Music and The Purcell School.

Lucy is seventeen years old and is from Stroud, Gloucestershire. She took up the flute at the age of six and is now studying at Chetham’s with Linda Verrier. Alexander is eighteen years old and is from Shaw, Oldham. He has been playing percussion for eleven years and joined Chetham’s in 2014. James grew up on a farm in Carmarthenshire and, after taking up violin and piano aged eight, entered Chetham’s at the age of ten. James currently studies with Jan Repko and Jiafeng Chen. Nicholas Oliver was born in London and has been Joint Head of Piano Accompaniment at Chetham’s School of Music since 2003.

Juliette Philogène is a French pianist born on Mauritius Island. She started learning piano at the age of five with Russian teacher Lilia Poustovoytova. She later studied at the École Normale de Paris and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland where she obtained her First Class Undergraduate and Master’s Degrees in Performance under pianist Jonathan Plowright’s tuition. Juliette has been on the prestigious LMN! Scotland scheme since 2009. She has played at the Usher Hall, Wales Millennium Centre, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and made her Wigmore Hall debut in October 2012. While teaching piano at the distinguished ESMS Edinburgh, Juliette achieved her MSc in Music Therapy (NordoffRobbins) with Distinction in July 2013. Juliette delights in performing solo and chamber music recitals. She has recently participated in the Commonwealth Classical Music Marathon day, Harrogate Festival and the European Federation of National Youth Orchestras amongst others.

The Aquila String Quartet is a young professional quartet formed at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in January 2015. A common love of the Beethoven string quartets inspired the creation of the Aquila. Each member of the quartet has been involved in several side by side projects with all of the major ensembles in Scotland, most notably the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Scottish Ensemble and the Dunedin Consort. Collectively the quartet has played principal positions in national youth orchestras and ensembles in conservatoires throughout Australia, America and Britain. During its short existence the quartet has enjoyed close tutoring from musicians such as David Watkin and Duncan Ferguson.

In May 2014, at the age of seventeen, Martin James Bartlett won the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition. Martin began his piano studies with Emily Jeffrey at the Royal College of Music Junior Department at the age of eight, continuing at the Purcell School five years later. Last autumn, he commenced his undergraduate studies with Vanessa Latarche at the Royal College of Music with a coveted Foundation Scholarship. Martin won numerous prizes during his time at the RCM Junior Department. He has also participated in masterclasses with Lang Lang, Stephen Kovacevich, Mikhail Petukhov, Kathryn Stott, Aaron Shorr and Alberto Portugheis. Recent engagements have included concerto performances with Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, and in London at St John’s Smith Square, Cadogan Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall. In April 2015, Martin made his debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. In 2015 he opened the Cheltenham Festival with the BBC Concert Orchestra and made his Proms debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
