Bach Viola da Gamba Sonata BWV 1028 Brahms Sonata No 1 Op 78 At the age of fifteen, Laura van der Heijden was awarded the title of BBC Young Musician 2012, performing Walton’s Cello Concerto with Kirill Karabits and the Northern Sinfonia. Laura’s musical studies started on recorder at the age of four. After learning with Marina Logie on cello, Laura had Grade 8 distinctions on both cello and piano by the age of ten. In 2005 Laura joined the Junior Department of the Royal College of Music, where she learns piano with Emily Jeffrey and participates in many ensembles. Since 2008 Laura has been a student of the renowned British-Russian cellist Leonid Gorokhov. Recent engagements include Walton and Dvorˇák Cello Concertos with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and recitals with Huw Watkins and Martin Bartlett. Alison Rhind was educated at Chetham’s School of Music, Oxford University and the Guildhall School of Music where she studied with Edith Vogel. She is regular accompanist of Nicola Benedetti and has worked with Alina Ibragimova and Leonid Gorokhov.

Schubert Hungarian Melody Schubert Sonata in C minor D958 Britten Night Piece (Notturno) Chopin Two Nocturnes Op 62 Chopin Ballade No 1 Op 23 Mishka Rushdie Momen, at the age of six, became the youngest pupil ever to have been admitted to the Purcell School where she was a pupil of Ilana Davids. Mishka is a postgraduate student at the Guildhall School of Music and has studied with Imogen Cooper as her only student since 2006. She has also had periodic private lessons with Alfred Brendel. In 2008 Mishka played in the Paul Lewis and Leslie Howard masterclasses at the Guildhall and in April 2009 she was selected to play in a showcase masterclass to Lang Lang at LSO St Luke’s which was the opening event of his residency with the LSO. Mishka’s debut solo recital was at the age of ten. Her concert experience includes most of London’s major venues including the Royal Festival Hall, Purcell Room, Barbican Centre, St Martin-in-the-Fields, Steinway Hall, Regents Hall, Spencer House and Leighton House.

David Greed violin Katherine New violin David Aspin viola Sally Pendlebury cello Haydn String Quartet Op 76, No 2 (Fifths) Brahms String Quartet Op 67 The Opera North String Quartet gave its premier recital in the Howard Assembly Room, Leeds Grand Theatre, in May 2011. David Greed has been Leader of the Orchestra of Opera North since its inception in 1978. He is well known throughout the area as a soloist and chamber player. Katherine New first joined Opera North in 1991, becoming Section Leader of Second Violins in 1998. After a busy life freelancing and playing in every orchestra and ensemble you could possibly think of, David Aspin joined as section Leader of Violas in 2007. Sally Pendlebury arrived only last year to permanently take up her position of Cello Section Leader. A founder member of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe she has brought to the orchestra a massive amount of experience in all types of ensemble. All members of the quartet are crazy about chamber music so it seemed the most natural thing in the world to form a quartet, and start to immerse themselves in the gigantic world of the quartet repertoire.

Junior Conservatoire Saxophone Quartet Iain Clarke Richard Scholfield Rory Simons Aidan Teplitzky Programme to be confirmed – for updates please check www.leedsconcertseason.com Aged sixteen, Iain lives on the Isle of Arran and attends the Junior Conservatoire where he studies piano and saxophone. He passed his Grade 8 saxophone with distinction in the summer of 2011, aged only fourteen. Richard, aged seventeen, is in his sixth year at Williamwood High School in Glasgow and has been playing the saxophone for eight years. He joined the Junior Conservatoire in 2011 and hopes to pursue a career in music. Rory started playing the saxophone when he was twelve years old. Aged fifteen, he joined the Junior Conservatoire studying with John Miller and he is currently the lead tenor for the saxophone quartet/ quintet and Wind Orchestra. Aidan, aged seventeen, was born in Sydney, Australia, and is a fifth year pupil of Hyndland Secondary. He began studying the saxophone at aged ten and taught himself for three years before joining the Junior Conservatoire where he currently studies with Josef Pacewicz.

Quei Due Caterina Comeglio vocal Adam Taylor guitar Programme to be confirmed – for updates please check www.leedsconcertseason.com Bel Trio is a new up and coming classical ensemble. The trio was formed in September 2012 and is already beginning to make an impression as an ensemble with great potential. The members of the trio have enjoyed performing together on several occasions, playing pieces by composers such as Mozart, Reinecke and Suk, to name but a few. Quei Due is a project born in early 2012. It arose from the members’ combined love of jazz as well as pop and latin-influenced music. Caterina, vocalist in Quei Due, draws her musical inspiration from both the jazz tradition and the Italian folk music of her childhood. Adam has played in many musical contexts, giving him a broad palette of inspiration from which to draw.

Rhiain is in her third year of the BMus course whilst Elfair has recently completed her MMus course after graduating from the RNCM. Born in Mynytho in the heart of the Llŷn Peninsula, situated not far from Abersoch, Rhiain and Elfair are former pupils of the William Mathias Music Centre, Caernarfon where they studied with Elinor Bennett. Elfair and Rhiain performed as a duo for the first time in Summer 2012 at the National Eisteddfod where they won the instrumental duo competition that was open to all ages. This success inspired the sisters to become Dwyres and continue performing together. Dwyres appears by kind permission of the RNCM.

Howard Breakspear viola Michael Cleaver piano Rebecca Clarke Sonata (1919) Kodály Adagio Prokofiev arr Berezovsky Selected Pieces from Romeo and Juliet Howard Breakspear studied with Lena Wood (‘The Dragon!’) at the Birmingham School of Music – an experience both terrifying and inspiring. After a time as a peripatetic teacher, he joined the BBC Midland Radio Orchestra (Radio 2) in 1973, then spent four years with provincial orchestras in the Netherlands. In 1979 he joined Opera North, where he stayed (most of the time as principal viola) until retiring last year. Howard has always enjoyed playing chamber music and concertos, as well as coaching (the National Children’s Orchestra was a particular privilege) – and one-to-one sessions. He now has more time to indulge his interests beyond music, which include mountain scrambling (especially the Cuillin on Skye), road cycling in hilly places, cycle maintenance, growing some basic vegetables, and cookery. His viola was made on commission by Karl Hepplewhite of Malvern in 1986. Pianist Michael Cleaver formed chamber music group Arcturus in 1999 with colleagues from the Orchestra of Opera North.

Pippa Scourse cornet/trumpet Jess Gillam saxophone Eliza Carew cello David Jones piano Programme to be confirmed – for updates please check www.leedsconcertseason.com Pippa, aged fifteen, is from Anglesey, North Wales and joined the Junior RNCM in September 2012, having gained Grade 8 with distinction on cornet. She studies cornet and trumpet with Tracey Redfern and recently completed her first year with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Jess is fourteen years old and is from Ulverston, Cumbria. She joined the Junior RNCM in September 2011, where she studies saxophone with Ruth Bourne. In 2012, Jess achieved a high distinction for her Grade 8 saxophone and was awarded the Ian McPherson Prize. Eliza Carew is sixteen years old and lives on the Wirral. Aged fourteen she passed her Grade 8 cello with a high distinction and since 2011 has studied cello at the Junior RNCM, taught by Chris Hoyle. In 2012 she joined the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.

Max Ruisi cello Programme to include: Kodály Duo and works by Martinu˚ and Bach Eloisa-Fleur Thom is a prize-winning violinist in demand throughout the UK both as a soloist and chamber musician. She completed her Master‘s at the Royal Academy of Music in June 2012 after studying as an undergraduate and postgraduate student with violinist Maurice Hasson. She is currently a Leverhulme Chamber Music Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music with the Leporello String Quartet and is the Artistic Director of The 12 ensemble. Max has performed throughout Europe as a chamber musician, including the 200th anniversary Lizst Festival in Switzerland, and he recently made his debut at Wigmore Hall. After graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Max studied in Switzerland and Holland with Rainer Schmidt on the String Quartet Graduate Course at the Basel Hochschule fur Musik and on the part-time course at the Netherlands String Quartet Academy, Amsterdam.

Schubert Sonata (Grand Duo) Prokofiev Five Melodies Ravel Sonata Eva was born in Reykjavík, Iceland and began playing the violin at the age of three. She studied with Maciej Rakowski at the Yehudi Menuhin School and the Royal Northern College of Music. During her time at the school she performed as a soloist at venues such as Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room and performed concertos throughout Europe with International orchestras. In May 2010, Eva performed the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the Manchester Camerata and shortly afterwards graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music with an International Artist Diploma in Solo Performance. Eva plays on an 1845 Joseph Rocca violin, previously owned by Alfredo Campoli. Benjamin studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and later with Pierre-Laurent Aimard at the Hochschule für Musik Cologne. Equally at home in chamber music, song, and solo recitals, he has performed across the UK and Europe in venues including the Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Wigmore Hall, Bridgewater Hall, the Purcell Room, Blackheath Halls and St James’s Piccadilly.

Strings in Conversation A mid-day musical conversation between sarangi and violin This concert features maestro Ustad Surjeet Singh on sarangi and his student Craig Monk on violin. Together they will share a musical conversation through Rāg Madhuvanti, with the tabla keeping the tempo and providing the framework through which all will witness gentle conversations to heated debate and finally an agreement.

Mozart Rondo K511 Ravel Sonatine Schumann Papillons Op 2 Chopin Sonata No 3, Op 58 Jamie Bergin was born in 1989 in the North East of England and attended Chetham’s School of Music where he studied with Murray McLachlan and Bernard Roberts. He continued his studies with Joan Havill at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He began his postgraduate studies at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien, Hannover with KarlHeinz Kämmerling who sadly died in June 2012. Jamie is currently studying with Lars Vogt, pupil of Karl Heinz Kammerling. Jamie has achieved many awards and competition successes, most recently First Prize, Audience Prize and Prize for the Best Interpretation of the Commissioned Work at the Europäische Klavierwettbewerb Bremen, Germany. Jamie has performed with orchestras such as the Manchester Camerata, Bremen Philharmoniker and Aarhus Symphony Orchestra. Recitals include major UK venues such as the Barbican, Bridgewater Hall and St Martin-in-the-Fields. His performances have been broadcast on TV and radio stations such as Channel 4, DeutschlandradioKultur and Radio Bremen.

David Curington oboe Mozart Oboe Quartet K370 Britten Phantasy Quartet Op 2 Dohnányi Serenade for String Trio Op 10 Formed in 2006, the Eblana String Trio consists of three committed chamber musicians, intent on performing the often neglected string trio repertoire. During its time at the Royal Northern College of Music the trio won all the major chamber music prizes, notably winning the 2010 RNCM Chamber Music Award and Audience Prize for its performance of Britten’s Phantasy Quartet, together with oboist David Curington. The Trio has recently been appointed Chamber Music Junior Fellow at Birmingham Conservatoire 2013/14 a post which encompasses performing, studying and teaching, all while acting as ambassadors for the Conservatoire. David studied composition at masters’ level at the RNCM with Gary Carpenter, whilst taking oboe lessons from Melinda Maxwell, graduating with the Soroptomist International Award for composers, and the Evelyn Rothwell Prize for oboists. He has recently been accepted onto the LPO Leverhulme Young Composers Scheme which will result in a performance in the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Beethoven Sonata No 5 (Spring) Prokofiev Sonata No 1 Joo Yeon Sir is a Korean-born British violinist based in London. In 2006, aged sixteen, she was overall Grand Prix Laureate at Nedyalka Simeonova International Violin Competition in Haskovo, Bulgaria, where her performance was broadcast on Bulgarian National Radio. She won the Royal Philharmonic Society Emily Anderson Award, BBC Young Composer of the Year and the Isolde Menges Prize for Best Unaccompanied Bach at the Royal College of Music, where she currently studies with Dr Felix Andrievsky. Pianist Oxana Shevchenko was born in Kazakhstan and graduated from the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where she studied with Elena Kuznetsova. She is currently studying with Dmitry Alexeev for a Masters in Performance at the Royal College of Music, supported by the Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother Scholarship. Oxana has won First Prize in several competitions, including the Scottish International Piano Competition, the Sheepdrove Intercollegiate Piano Competition and the International Balys Dvarionas Competition.

Mozart Fantasia K475 Schubert Four Impromptus D899 Rachmaninov Sonata No 2 Op 36 (1931) Robert studied at Chetham’s School of Music and at the Royal Northern College of Music. In 2010 he completed his master’s with Peter Frankl at Yale University. A consummate musician, Robert is equally at home as soloist and chamber musician. Engagements during 2013/14 include appearances as soloist at Wigmore Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Nottingham International Piano Series and chamber music performances at Wigmore Hall, the Louvre and Sage Gateshead. As a member of the Rhodes Piano Trio Robert was selected by YCAT in 2010 and in 2011 won Second Prize at the Melbourne International Competition.

Naoka Aoki was born in Tokyo in 1992 and started playing the violin at the age of three. She has won a number of prizes in Japan, including a special diploma from the Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians in 2004 and first prize and three special prizes at the 78th Music Competition in Japan in 2009. After studies at Toho College of Music in Tokyo, Naoka currently attends the Royal College of Music in London, studying with Mark Messenger. She also studies with Professor Mayumi Fujikawa. For her debut performance with the NHK Symphony Orchestra Naoka performed Paganini’s Violin Concerto No 1. More recently she performed Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto with the RCM Philharmonic Orchestra having won the RCM Concerto Competition. Alison Rhind was educated at Chetham’s School of Music, Oxford University and the Guildhall School of Music where she studied with Edith Vogel. She is regular accompanist of Nicola Benedetti and has worked with Alina Ibragimova and Leonid Gorokhov.

Programme to include: works by Bach, Brahms, Nicolai and Penderecki 2-bas is a fresh new group formed by two students from the Royal Academy of Music. The players, Henry Lindsay and Matthew Blunt, were joint principal in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and have spent the last six years playing next to each other in various ensembles. Both tuba players have brilliant individual credentials, but their playing together has been called ‘vibrant and full of zest’. Playing original compositions, arrangements and old classics, 2-bas perform on a variety of instruments to bring an eclectic mix of music to their audiences. With a collection of virtuosic tuba playing, singing and piano playing they present fun filled, extraordinary performances!

Beth Haughan piano Haydn Piano Sonata No 52: Allegro Fauré Nocturne No 13, Op 119 Born in Middlesex in 1996, Lydia started playing the cello at the age of four and the piano at age eight. In 2010, she joined the Purcell School, where she currently studies cello with Pal Banda. Lydia is currently a member of the National Youth Orchestra. Laura was born in Hammersmith, London, in 1995. She started playing the flute when she was eight years old and in 2006 was accepted into the Purcell School, where she studies flute with Anna Pope. Laura is currently Principal Flute of the London Schools Symphony Orchestra. Beth was born in Renfrewshire, Scotland in 1995. She has been studying the piano for seven years and joined the Purcell School in November 2010, where she currently studies piano with John Thwaites. In 2012, Beth won the junior prize at the Caernarfon Piano Competition.

Caplet Two Petites Pièces Prokofiev Sonata No 2 Poulenc Sonata Rosanna graduated in 2011 from Trinity Laban, with Distinction in her Masters in Performance degree, studying with Anna Noakes. Prior to Trinity, Rosanna was at the University of Leeds graduating with a 1st Class BMus degree. The third year of her degree was spent studying at the Strasbourg Conservatoire, one of France’s principal music colleges. Rosanna has performed in the UK’s most prestigious venues including Wigmore Hall, the Bridgewater Hall and the Purcell Room, where she received a standing ovation and a number of excellent reviews in the national press. She performed with the London Sinfonietta in last year’s Proms and has recorded ABRSM’s new flute syllabus CDs for 2014-17. Leo Nicholson studied at the Purcell School, the Junior Royal Northern College of Music, and with Douglas Finch and the late Yonty Solomon at Trinity Laban. Leo is a much soughtafter accompanist, and has returned to Trinity as a faculty member, primarily accompanying singers and wind players.

It is one of the largest academic schools of its kind in the country and offers courses across a wide range of undergraduate and research interests.

Amy Welch violin Tory Clarke violin Laurie Dempsey viola Joshua Lynch cello Haydn String Quartet Op 33, No 4 Mendelssohn String Quartet No 2 The Cassia String Quartet was formed in 2009, born out of a passion for the string quartet repertoire. It is currently mentored by former Lindsay Quartet member Peter Cropper and has received coaching from the Endellion, Brodsky, Kuss, Talich and Wihan Quartets as well as Pavel Fischer, Susie Mészáros and Christoph Richter. The quartet has performed in masterclasses with the Škampa Quartet, James Boyd, Levon Chilingirian and with Richard Ireland in conjunction with ChamberStudio. The Cassia is currently the resident string quartet with Arts@Trinity in Leeds and has given concerts as part of the International Lake District Summer Music, RNCM Chamber Music and Grassington festivals. It was winner of the Nossek String Quartet Prize in 2013. The Cassia has commissioned and premiered a quartet by the composer Aaron Parker, as well as taking part in the Music Space Reflection festival celebrating the music of Simon Bainbridge. Most recently it was delighted to participate in the Wigmore Hall Study Day in May 2013.

Nicholas, aged seventeen, has been playing the saxophone for over nine years and joined Chetham’s in 2010. He has been taught classical saxophone by Jim Muirhead and Andy Wilson, and studies jazz saxophone with Iain Dixon and Les Chisnall. Aged seventeen, Jonathan lives in Huddersfield and started playing percussion at the age of five. He joined Chetham’s in 2010 where he studies with Paul Patrick, David Hext and Sophie Hastings. Robert, aged seventeen, was born in Dusseldorf, Germany and began playing the cello at the age of six. He joined Chetham’s when he was ten and studies cello with Gillian Thoday. Muriel Cellier was born in Lyon, France. She started playing the violin at the age of four, but changed to the cello after hearing the Beaux Arts Trio performing Schubert in concert. Muriel Cellier studied with Xavier Gagnepain, Patrick Gabard in France and Stefan Popov in London where she obtained a Master’s Degree in Performance from the Guildhall School of Music. She has played internationally with many orchestras and as a solo player and chamber musician has performed with dancers, visual and theatrical artists. Her quest for unconventional performance situations and contact with young audiences was one of the reasons that initiated her collaboration with the pianist David Strong. Born in Yorkshire, David studied piano at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester under Marjorie Clementi, and later with Bernard Roberts. In 1990 he moved to Denmark where he won the position of pianist in the Jutland Ensemble, a chamber group employed by the Danish government.

Polish pianist and teacher Ryszard Bakst before reading Music at Trinity College, Cambridge. Subsequently the Royal College of Music awarded her a Leverhulme Postgraduate Studentship, enabling her to study with Yonty Solomon. She was also a pupil of Vanessa Latarche at the Royal Academy of Music, where her awards included the prestigious Christian Carpenter Postgraduate Recital Prize. She has been privileged to undertake further study with Sergei Babayan and Joan Havill. Hailed as a rising star by the magazine International Piano, Scottish pianist Christina Lawrie’s recent engagements include live BBC Radio 3 broadcasts and her debut with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. She has performed at leading UK venues including St George’s, Bristol, Perth Concert Hall, Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room and Cadogan Hall, London. She has played for music societies spanning nearly all of the UK, from the Orkney Islands down to the Channel Islands.

Sasha Savaloni is a fourth year student at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and studies with renowned performer and teacher, Professor Allan Neave. He has won many awards including first prize at the North East Scotland Classical Guitar Society Award in 2009 and 2011, first prize at the International Classical Guitar Trophy at the Glasgow Music Festival in 2008 and 2009 and second prize at the Governor’s Recital for Strings in 2012. As a soloist Sasha has appeared in Iran and throughout Scotland, performing in important venues such as Glasgow City Hall as well as performing in significant festivals such as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Ullapool Guitar Festival. Keen on chamber music, Sasha has worked with numerous musicians and ensembles, including a collaboration with Scottish Soprano Alison McNeill and performing with the European Union Youth Orchestra.
