Leeds Lunchtime

Organ Music / 2017 18

Mondays at 1.05pm

Leeds Town Hall

It is a huge privilege for me to take 2017 over the running of the Town Hall 18 September organ recitals from Simon Lindley, who has built the series into one of the Darius Battiwalla most successful in the country, and to Leeds Town Hall be presenting another season of world Bach arr Dupré Sinfonia to Cantata 29 class recitals on this versatile and Vaughan Williams Prelude on Rhosymedre exciting instrument, which I played for Bach Prelude & Fugue in G, BWV 541 Hollins Morceau de Concert the first time in 1985. In the 2017/18 series, not only do we welcome established international concert artists, we also provide a platform for some fine young players at the start of, we hope, flourishing careers as organists. Simon (now City Organist Emeritus) continues his involvement in the series with his ever popular guest artists – David Greed, Phillip McCann and Maggie MacDonald. He also joins John Scott Whiteley from York Minster for our celebration of Dr Francis Jackson’s 100th anniversary on 2 October. With organ solo repertoire from the 17th to the 21st centuries, and transcriptions from Bach to Johann Strauss and Gershwin, we continue the tradition of combining well-loved favourites with less familiar – but no less thrilling – works. If any of your favourites are missing, I will be performing a programme of your requests on 26 February 2018, so please send your requests to Leeds International Concert Season, Leeds Town Hall, The Headrow, Leeds, LS1 3AD or music@leeds.gov.uk. Finally I would like to thank you, the audience, for your support in past and coming years. The fact that we can sustain the series financially while keeping admission free of charge is a great testament to your continued enthusiasm and generosity. Darius Battiwalla City Organist
