Leeds International Orchestral Season 2013/14

Page 1

Welcome to Leeds International Concert Season’s 2013/14 Orchestral Season. The Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio opens the season with an all-Russian programme featuring Peter Donohoe in Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No 3. The following Saturday we are delighted to welcome the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra to Leeds Town Hall for the first time. Inspiring our dance theme for the season, the Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra performs Kodaly’s Dances of Galánta, the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra a Suite from Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra features Stravinsky’s Petrushka. BBC Young Musician of the Year 2012, fifteen year old Laura van der Heijden, makes her debut at Leeds Town Hall performing Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C. Meanwhile, we welcome back two competition winners: Sofya Gulyak, winner of the Leeds International Piano Competition 2009, presents Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No 1 under the baton of Sir Mark Elder and Alexander Shelley, winner of the Leeds Conductors Competition 2005, conducts the English Chamber Orchestra. Musicians and composers from closer to home feature in the Hallé and Leeds Philharmonic Chorus’ all-British programme, whilst Leeds Festival Chorus gives the world premiere of James MacMillan’s God is our refuge and strength.
