Leeds International Orchestral Season 2015/16

Leeds Town Hall

Welcome to Leeds International Concert Season’s 2015/16 Orchestral Season.

The 2015/16 season opens with one of the greatest works of the twentieth century, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring given by the Basel Symphony Orchestra. Also from abroad we are delighted to welcome the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, Flanders Symphony Orchestra, Prague Symphony Orchestra, European Union Chamber Orchestra, Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra. Leeds Town Hall continues to host visits from some of the finest British orchestras and their Music Directors, including the Orchestra of Opera North and Richard Farnes with Mahler’s Symphony No 1 in December, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vasily Petrenko with an all-Russian programme in January and the BBC Philharmonic with Juanjo Mena in February. The City’s two great choral societies continue to play an important role in the season. Leeds Philharmonic Chorus performs an all-Mozart programme in November including Mozart’s final work, his Requiem and Leeds Festival Chorus presents Tippett’s A Child of our Time in March. To end the 2015/16 season we are very excited to announce a performance of Mahler’s Symphony No 8 (Symphony of a Thousand). This will be the first performance at Leeds Town Hall of this legendary work since 1985. The Orchestra of Opera North will be conducted by David Hill joined by Leeds Festival Chorus, Leeds Philharmonic Chorus, Bradford Cathedral Youth Choir and eight vocal soloists. A performance not to be missed! Leeds’ International Orchestral Season continues to be one of the finest orchestral programmes in the country. We look forward to welcoming you to Leeds Town Hall during the 2015/16 season.

Mr Elgar tells us that the heading ‘Enigma’ is justified by the fact that it is possible to add another phrase, which is quite familiar, above the original theme that he has written. What that theme is no one knows except the composer. Thereby hangs the Enigma.

A hymn to free and happy Man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit... I cannot say that I deliberately chose this theme. It was born in me and clamoured for expression. The music matured within me. It filled my soul. SERGEI PROKOFIEV ON WRITING SYMPHONY NO 5
