Leeds Town Hall
Welcome to Leeds International Concert Season’s 2018/19 Orchestral Season.
We are delighted to welcome international tours by firm favourites the Russian State Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra, St Petersburg Philharmonic conducted by Yuri Temirkanov, and the Oslo Philharmonic. Making its debut at LICS we look forward to a visit from the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra with soloist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, and we welcome back for the first time since 1995, the Russian Philharmonic of Novosibirsk. The finest British orchestras continue to visit Leeds Town Hall including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra with Chief Conductor Vasily Petrenko and the Hallé conducted by Music Director Sir Mark Elder with a prize winner of the Leeds International Piano Competition to be held in September 2018. The Royal Northern Sinfonia makes a welcome return to the series in January, conducted by Jessica Cottis and with BBC Young Musician finalist Jess Gillam as saxophone soloist. In December the Orchestra of Opera North gives the second performance of a new commission from composer Will Todd followed by a performance of Górecki’s haunting Symphony of Sorrowful Songs. Leeds is lucky enough to boast two great choral societies, both playing an important role in the season. Leeds Festival Chorus performs Britten’s War Requiem in November as part of the City’s 1918 commemorations and Leeds Philharmonic Chorus presents Dvořák’s Stabat Mater in March before both choruses join together to bring the season to a resounding close with a performance of Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius in June.
All concerts start at 7.30pm
(except 19 January and 9 February which start at 7pm)

It is cruel, you know, that music should be so beautiful. It has the beauty of loneliness and of pain: of strength and freedom. The beauty of disappointment and never-satisfied love.
