Leeds International Orchestral Season
2012/13 Leeds Town Hall
Welcome to Leeds International Concert Season’s 2012/13 Orchestral Season. We are excited to be opening the 2012/13 season with a performance of Shostakovich’s immense Leningrad Symphony in the 70th anniversary year of its premiere. This visit by the St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, conducted by esteemed Chief Conductor Alexander Dmitriev, is a not-to-be-missed highlight of our foreign tours. We are also delighted to welcome the Prague Symphony, Bergen Philharmonic (for the first time in over twenty years), Polish National Radio Symphony and the Moscow State Symphony.
All concerts start at 7.30pm, unless otherwise stated. Free Pre-Concert Talks Discover more about the music at one of our free pre-concert talks, usually at 6.45pm on the night of each concert – an opportunity to learn more about the music you are about to hear, background to the composers and tips on what to listen out for.
Explore & Learn Visit www.leedsconcertseason.com to read programme notes on the music, view biographies of key performers and learn more about the lives of the great composers.
Following the Leeds International Piano Competition in September we look forward to hearing one of the prize-winners perform with the Orchestra of Opera North in April 2013. We also welcome back to Leeds two previous prize-winners – Igor Tchetuev and Tatiana Kolesova.
Find Out First
As always, we enjoy hearing from some of the finest British orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with world renowned Chopin expert Janina Fialkowska and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra with cellist Natalie Clein.

The City’s two great choral societies continue to play an important role in the season. Leeds Festival Chorus performs Rachmaninov’s The Bells in November, Leeds Philharmonic Chorus presents Haydn’s The Creation in March, whilst both choirs join forces for a concert of American greats including Adams Harmonium to bring the season to a resounding close next May. Leeds’ International Orchestral Season continues to be one of the finest orchestral programmes in the country. We look forward to welcoming you to Leeds Town Hall during the 2012/13 season.

It was clear from the start that Prokofiev had a special gift for ballet music which placed him in the big league alongside Tchaikovsky, Ravel and Stravinsky, but it was a gift directed towards satire and social comment rather than romance.
Straight-away the ideas flow in upon me, directly from God, and not only do I see distinct themes in my mind’s eye, but they are clothed in the right forms, harmonies, and orchestration.

I was never so devout as when I was at work on The Creation; I fell on my knees each day and begged God to give me the strength to finish the work.
My idea is that there is music in the air, music all around us; the world is full of it, and you simply take as much as you require. Elgar
