A world-class programme of arts and culture in Leeds’ most iconic building awaits... It truly is a festival season as the Leeds International Beer Festival (6–9 Sep) is the first of four festivals to visit Leeds Town Hall. Later that month, Thought Bubble (22 & 23 Sep) – the UK's largest celebration of comic art – takes in a huge footprint of the city, including our building. As the nights draw in, the awe-inspiring Light Night Leeds (4 & 5 Oct) welcomes tens of thousands of visitors to our illuminated city, and Leeds International Film Festival (1–15 Nov) returns with an epic celebration of film culture – in the city where the world’s first films were made. Leeds International Piano Competition will once again present the finals within the magnificent backdrop of the Victoria Hall (14 & 15 Sep), and we also welcome the world’s finest orchestras in Leeds International Orchestral Season – highlights include Brahms’ first symphony performed

by the BBC Philharmonic (29 Sep) and the Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra (27 Oct) with a rousing programme under the baton of Yutaka Sado. Marking 100 years since the end of the First World War, our programme of remembrance includes a performance of Britten’s War Requiem (17 Nov), the secondever performance of Will Todd’s Songs of Love and Battle (1 Dec), and a concert performance of War Horse (25 Nov) with guest narrator, the author himself, Michael Morpurgo. Our commemorative programme is marked with the ‘The City Remembers’ symbol throughout this brochure. There’s plenty more to see including comedy, gigs and special events. BBC Philharmonic

Omer Meir Wellber conductor Sergei Krylov violin Wagner Prelude to Act I: Lohengrin Sibelius Violin Concerto Brahms Symphony No 1

Despite being a violinist himself, Sibelius only wrote one violin concerto. The premiere was a disaster – Sibelius was suffering from alcoholism and had rushed to finish the piece. Neither the soloist nor the orchestra was prepared to perform the extremely difficult score and Sibelius eventually revised the work to make it less demanding. However, it soon became one of the most popular works in the Romantic concerto repertoire. Brahms was under immense pressure when he wrote his first symphony and he put it off for many years for fear of comparison to Beethoven. Despite Brahms’ confession that it took 21 years to write the piece, it didn’t take long for critics to draw similarities with Beethoven’s Symphony No 9, an observation to which Brahms retorted, “any ass can see that!”, and the work soon became known as ‘Beethoven’s Tenth’. The similarities are strongest in the final movements of both pieces, although during composition Brahms said he was thinking of John 14:10: “I am in the Father, and the Father is in me.” A £38.16

Box Office: 0113 376 0318

“I am the new Bacchus, pressing out glorious wine for the human spirit!” Beethoven wasn’t known for his modesty – but until you’ve heard his seventh symphony you’ve never known just how intoxicating music can be. It’s the only way to end a concert that begins with Skalkottas’s riotous Greek wine festival, and which features the virtuosic Yulianna Avdeeva in Tchaikovsky’s barnstorming concerto. Tchaikovsky’s ubiquitous and much-loved concerto was written at a time when the composer’s feelings were in even greater turmoil than usual. The heroic and typically Russian melodies of the Piano Concerto No 1 have made it one of the most popular concertos today. Instantly recognisable are the flourish and grandioso piano chords which accompany the opening melody.

Russian State Symphony Orchestra Valentin Uryupin conductor Barry Douglas piano Khachaturian Suite: Masquerade Shostakovich Piano Concerto No 2 Rachmaninov Symphony No 2

Following the death of Stalin in 1953 the Soviet Union enjoyed a period of relative liberalisation, during which Shostakovich wrote some of his most passionate music. He wrote his second piano concerto for the 19th birthday of his son Maxim, who premiered the piece in 1957 at his graduation ceremony at the Moscow Conservatory. This light hearted work was recently voted 3rd most popular piano concerto in the 2015 Classic FM Hall of Fame. Twelve years after the disastrous premiere of his first symphony under the direction of a drunk conductor, Rachmaninov penned his second symphony. This time he took no chances and conducted the premiere himself and the piece was very well received, earning him a Glinka Award and restoring his confidence as a symphonic composer. This is one of Rachmaninov’s most famous works - monumental, grand and full of recognisable melodies. Listen out for the exquisite slow adagio with its long clarinet solo. A £38.16

Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra Yutaka Sado conductor Angela Hewitt piano Sibelius Finlandia Beethoven Piano Concerto No 5 (Emperor) Sibelius Symphony No 5

Finlandia is a patriotic tone poem that was written in protest against the increasing censorship in Sibelius’ home country of Finland, largely controlled by Tsarist Russia. The music includes the Finlandia Hymn, and rousing, turbulent melodies representing the struggle of the Finnish people. Beethoven’s last complete piano concerto, No 5, is grand and triumphant, fully showcasing the piano. The three-movement Emperor concerto is a flood of beautiful and intense sound, and the title, given after Beethoven’s death, reflects the work’s stature, difficulty and impressiveness, as it re-wrote the relationship between orchestra and piano. Sibelius was commissioned to compose his Symphony No 5 by the Finnish Government in celebration of his fiftieth birthday which had been declared a national holiday. Writing in his diary at the time of composition, Sibelius compared his musical ideas and motifs to streams and rivers, all flowing towards the sea. A £38.16

Britten’s choral masterpiece delicately weaves the Latin Mass with nine of Wilfred Owen’s war poems through the voices of three soloists, two orchestras and choirs of adults and children. Britten brutally bares the reality of one human obeying an order to kill another through heartwrenching harmony, melody and orchestration. Britten had a strong message: “My subject is War, and the Pity of War. The Poetry is in the pity... all a poet can do today is warn”, is the Owen inscription on the title page. In a concert marking the 100th anniversary of the end of The Great War, we also remember the members of Leeds Festival Chorus and ancestors of the choruses performing this evening who served during the conflict. Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra Vasily Petrenko conductor Elena Urioste violin Tchaikovsky Francesca da Rimini Korngold Violin Concerto Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition

Originally conceived as an opera, Tchaikovsky’s symphonic fantasy was inspired by the story of Francesca and Paolo. This tempestuous piece follows two souls lost in hell owing to their adulterous affair. Korngold’s Violin Concerto marries cinematic style with the concert hall in an unashamedly romantic work for solo violin and orchestra. Writing in 1940s Hollywood, from the hearttugging opening theme to the lively final movement, Korngold blends big tunes with shimmering orchestral textures to create a work ranked as one of the best concertos of its time. When Mussorgsky’s close friend, architect and painter Victor Hartmann, died, an exhibition of his work was arranged in St Petersburg. It was here that Mussorgsky conceived his tribute – a suite of piano pieces depicting a selection of the paintings, which was later orchestrated by Ravel.

Nicholas Kok conductor Tim Albery director The UK premiere of a Pulitzer Prize-winning opera Inspired by real events, Silent Night tells the story of the 1914 Christmas truce, when peace spontaneously broke out between French, German and British troops in the trenches during WWI.

Madeleine Peyroux

plus support, Tom Baxter Twenty years after her recording debut, Dreamland, Madeleine Peyroux continues her musical journey of exploring beyond the ordinary with Secular Hymns, a spirited and soulful masterwork of loping, skipping, sassy, feisty and sexy tunes delivered in a captivating mélange of funk, blues and jazz. Recorded with electric guitarist Jon Herington and upright bassist Barak Mori, Secular Hymns is a collection of songs that have their own hymn-like stories of self-awareness and inner dialogue, a communal consciousness and a spiritual essence.

Tickets: £41.87, £37.10

German opera singer Nikolaus Sprink, now a soldier, is ordered to perform for the Crown Prince Wilhelm, behind the front line on Christmas Eve, 1914. Back at the front later that night, upon hearing Scottish soldiers singing, Sprink responds with a rousing song, and raises a Christmas tree above the bunker. Yet the moment of hope and humanity that follows proves to be only a brief respite from the futility and horror of the War. Lyrical, cinematic and expressive, the Pulitzer Prize-winning score by American composer Kevin Puts, combined with a multilingual libretto by Mark Campbell, is a deeply emotional work. Directed by Tim Albery, this UK premiere production is staged as part of a series of events marking the centenary of the end of World War I. Sung in English, German and French with English titles. Silent Night, based on the screenplay by Christian Carion for the motion picture Joyeux Noël produced by Nord-Ouest Production. Commissioned by Minnesota Opera. A Minnesota Opera New Works Initiative Production. Music by Kevin Puts. Libretto by Mark Campbell. By arrangement with Aperto Press, publisher. Bill Holab Music: Sole Agent.

Orchestra of Opera North

Opera North Youth Chorus Opera North Young Voices Opera North Children’s Chorus Richard Farnes conductor Fflur Wyn soprano Johnny Herford baritone Will Todd Songs of Love and Battle Górecki Symphony No 3 (Sorrowful Songs)

Former Music Director of Opera North, Richard Farnes returns to the helm of the Orchestra to present the second-ever performance of Will Todd’s Songs of Love and Battle. Dedicated to Opera North’s youth ensembles who are featured this evening, Todd’s commission is a micro opera depicting the conflicting emotions of war through the words and poems of Maggie Gottlieb, in eight parts. Górecki picks up the themes of loss and separation caused by conflict using three Polish texts in his Symphony No 3. The first and third texts are written from the perspective of a mother who has lost a child, whilst the middle text is taken from a message written on the wall of a Gestapo cell during World War II, written by a child separated from her parents. Arguably one of the most famous pieces from the late twentieth century, the heartbreak is felt in every aspect of Górecki’s music. A £38.16

Ross Noble El Hablador

Who is El Hablador? It’s Ross Noble. No, but who is the one they call El Hablador? I just said, it is Ross Noble. You know? Long hair, does stand up where he dances about the stage. But what is the legend of El Hablador? I don’t think it’s a thing. It’s clearly Ross coming up with a name for his show, so he can make out like he is some sort of mysterious shadowy figure. Ross Noble returns to dance around the stage spinning out all the nonsense in his head into a hilarious stand up show. At some point, he may wander into a shadowy part of the stage and look a bit shadowy. Book now to see the one they call El Hablador. (Ross is the only one that calls himself El Hablador.)

Sir Mark Elder conductor Prize winner Leeds International Piano Competition 2018 Bach Piano Concerto in D minor Shostakovich Symphony No 8

Bach’s majestic Piano Concerto in D minor was one of the earliest of the composer’s works to be taken up for publication. It is thought to be based on a lost violin concerto and features delicate passages and conversations between piano and orchestra. Shostakovich’s massive eighth symphony was composed over the summer of 1943, reflecting the horror of war. The inward-looking quality of the finale is some of the composer’s most terrifying music. In typically cryptic fashion, Shostakovich summed up its message in just three words, ‘life is beautiful’. It ends with just a faint breath of optimism – though not enough for the Soviet authorities who wanted a triumphant war symphony and deemed the piece counterrevolutionary.
