The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, under the dynamic leadership of conductor Nicholas Collon, performs a rousing programme of orchestral works culminating in Prokofiev’s popular Symphony No 5, his moving wartime tribute to the ‘grandeur of the human spirit.’ This music is compelling, dramatic, powerful, and in the hands of 163 of the UK’s brightest teenagers, totally uplifting.

Brahms was under immense pressure when he wrote his first symphony and he put it off for many years for fear of comparison to Beethoven. Despite Brahms’ confession that it took 21 years to write the piece, it didn’t take long for critics to draw similarities between Brahms’ First Symphony and Beethoven’s Ninth, an observation to which Brahms retorted, “any ass can see that!” and the work soon became known as ‘Beethoven’s Tenth’. The similarities are strongest in the final movements of both pieces, although during composition Brahms said he was thinking of John 14:10: “I am in the Father, and the Father is in me.”
Straight-away the ideas flow in upon me, directly from God, and not only do I see distinct themes in my mind’s eye, but they are clothed in the right forms, harmonies, and orchestration. Johannes Brahms

Like the Capriccio Italien, this work ends with an uplifting dance and it was voted 3rd piano concerto and 26th piece overall in the 2015 Classic FM Hall of Fame. Upon graduation from the St Petersburg Conservatoire in 1916, Prokofiev set upon writing his first symphony in the style of Haydn, saying “…if Haydn were writing today…he would keep to his way of writing, whilst at the same time incorporating newer ideas. I wanted to compose just such a symphony.”

Holocaust Memorial Day Civic Remembrance Event Join the Lord Mayor of Leeds and hundreds of local people for an afternoon of commemoration in response to the international Holocaust Memorial Day theme of Don’t Stand By. The keynote speaker will be Nick Winton, son of Sir Nicholas Winton, who saved the lives of 669 children through arranging Kindertransports from Czechoslovakia in the lead up to the Second World War. The internationally renowned Academy of Northern Ballet presents students from its Centre for Advanced Training programme in classical ballet who will be performing Small Steps, choreographed by Cara O’Shea. This moving interpretation of the inspirational stories of bravery and upstanding in the face of extreme adversity fuses classical ballet and theatre to re-tell the journeys to safety undertaken by almost 10,000 children who were forced to leave their families to survive. The event will also include music performed by members of The Clothworkers Consort of Leeds, reading of the seven statements of commitments with candle lighting and a traditional Hebrew memorial prayer sung by the Chairman of Bradford Synagogue, Rudi Leavor. Free and open to all.
The concert concludes with music from Khachaturian’s ballet, Gayane, which was premiered in 1942 by the Kirov Ballet. In four parts, the instantly recognisable Sabre Dance from the frenetic final movement is certainly the most popular part of the score, and can be heard on the soundtracks to many films and television shows. Adams The Chairman Dances Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No 1 Penderecki Chaconne Brahms Symphony No 3
Bach’s Brandenburg concertos were commissioned by the Margrave of Brandenburg in 1721 after he heard Bach perform. The Brandenburg concertos have featured countless times in film and television; No 3 was the original theme tune to the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow and featured in the original Die Hard film.
Rachmaninov was just eighteen when he composed his first piano concerto for his friend Alexander Siloti. Around that time, Siloti had been practising Grieg’s piano concerto in Rachmaninov’s house and influences can be heard throughout.
Liszt’s Angelus! Prayer to the Guardian Angels is taken from a set of three solo piano pieces called Années de pèlerinage (Years of Pilgrimage), influenced by the work of Goethe. The section heard this evening is from the 3rd of these pieces and Liszt dedicated this to his granddaughter.

Penderecki’s Chaconne is taken from his Polish Requiem, first performed in 1984. Originally commissioned to write a piece commemorating those killed in anti-government riots in 1970, Penderecki began to expand the work into a requiem, honouring other key events and figures in Polish history. The Chaconne was not added until 2005, in memory of Pope John Paul II. Brahms’ third symphony is widely considered to be his best, despite tension at the premiere, when fans of the recently deceased Wagner, a long standing enemy of Brahms, tried to sabotage the performance. The recurring motif throughout the piece is based around the notes F, A and F, representing the words “frei aber froh” meaning “free but happy” – the single 50 year old’s description of himself! BBC Philharmonic Juanjo Mena conductor Augustin Hadelich violin Smetana Má Vlast: Vltava Bartók Violin Concerto No 2 Dvorˇák Symphony No 9 (From the New World)
Ma Vlast means “My Homeland”, and Smetana’s six symphonic poems were each composed to represent an aspect of his country. Vltava depicts the journey of the longest river within the Czech Republic, described by Smetana as: “starting from the two small springs, the cold and warm… the unification of both streams… through woods and meadows… through landscapes where a farmer’s wedding is celebrated, the round dance of the mermaids in the night’s moonshine: on the nearby rocks loom proud castles, palaces and ruins aloft. The Vltava swirls into the St John’s Rapids…widens and flows toward Prague… and then majestically vanishes into the distance…” Dvorˇák’s Symphony No 9 is one of the most popular symphonies from the romantic repertoire, and is best known to many as the tune from the Hovis advert which featured the theme from the second movement. Dvorˇák wrote the piece to mark 400 years since Columbus’ discovery of America, but whilst he was influenced by African-American spirituals, a nostalgic sense of longing for his homeland, Czechoslovakia can be sensed. English Chamber Orchestra Garry Walker conductor Aristo Sham piano Schubert Overture: In the Italian Style Beethoven Piano Concerto No 5 (Emperor) Mendelssohn Symphony No 3 (Scottish)
Having recently heard two of Rossini’s operas, Schubert wrote two overtures. This evening we hear an orchestral arrangement of the Overture in C major, D591. As is typical with Rossini’s works, woodwind is at the fore. Beethoven’s Emperor piano concerto, the last that he composed, was given this title as it re-wrote the relationship between orchestra and piano. Previously the piano almost played a supporting role – repeating or developing themes laid out by the orchestra. This was the first time the piano competed head-on with the orchestra with a full voice of its own. Whilst travelling around Scotland, Mendelssohn visited Holyrood Chapel which was the source of inspiration for the Scottish Symphony. Mendelssohn said: “In the deep twilight we went today to the palace...The chapel below is now roofless. Grass and ivy thrive there and at the broken altar. Everything is ruined, decayed, and the clear heavens pour in.” Listen out for the nod to Scottish folk music in the upbeat second movement and folk dance in the finale. A B £33.50 £30.50

Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto is known as the first of the Romantic period. Despite following the usual form of three movements, the concerto was unusual for its time as the movements are all linked together, in order to prevent the audience from applauding in the breaks. Whilst applause between movements was the practice previously, Mendelssohn’s concept became the norm.

Mendelssohn Violin Concerto Tippett A Child of our Time
Tippett began writing his secular oratorio A Child of Our Time in 1939, on the day Britain declared war on Germany. The work, with an overriding message of peace, was written in reaction to Nazi persecution of Jews. Tippett shaped the work into three parts, explaining: “Part I…deals with the general state of oppression. Part II presents the particular story of a young man’s attempt to seek justice by violence and the catastrophic consequences; and Part III considers the moral to be drawn, if any.” Listen out for five American spiritual songs, including Steal Away and Deep River. Due to overwhelming demand following his recent sell-out UK, Australian and South African dates, Dylan Moran, star of Black Books, Shaun of the Dead and Calvary brings his latest show, Off the Hook, back to Leeds Town Hall. Expect a master class in comedy! Dylan, who has been referred to as ‘The Oscar Wilde of comedy’, has recently been sharpening his deceptively rambling stand-up in unusual places including Kiev, Moscow and Kazakhstan – making him the first western comic to perform in St Petersburg. Having received overwhelming reviews in the UK, Off the Hook is a hilarious glimpse into Dylan’s unique take on love, politics, misery and the everyday absurdities of life, all delivered with poetical panache.
‘Trumping Shakespeare, he reduces life to four ages: ‘Child, failure, old and dead’. Faced with one-liners as killing as that the world suddenly seems a better place.’ The Telegraph
‘His comedy takes on an existential dimension, as tubby, nicotine-starved, emasculated Moran comes to represent the struggles we all wage for meaning and connection’ The Guardian
‘High-octane riffs from Irish master of grumpiness… spellbinding’ Evening Standard
‘In his heightened ideas and vocabulary, Moran compulsively swerves clichés as he builds up layers of laughs… funny and fascinating, and utterly deserving of his place in the modern classics’ The Times

Elgar’s second (and last) symphony was dedicated to the late King Edward VII who had recently passed away and the second movement is a funeral march. Elgar instructed: “I want you to imagine a great crowd of silent people, watching the passing of a beloved sovereign. Strings, you must play those semiquaver figures of yours like the sigh of an immense crowd... Oboe, I want you to play your lament entirely free, with all the expression you can get into it...” Elgar said that he was inspired to write this movement following a visit to Venice and also by a Percy Shelley poem but another profound influence was his friendship with Alice Stuart Wortley, with whom many believed he was in a romantic relationship.
My idea is that there is music in the air, music all around us; the world is full of it, and you simply take as much as you require. Edward Elgar

The City of Leeds Youth Orchestra’s performances in recent years are one of the great success stories of music making in the region. Tonight it joins forces with the Opera North Children’s Chorus and members of Leeds Philharmonic Chorus, Inspiration, St Peter’s Singers and actors to present the extraordinary music William Walton wrote for Laurence Olivier’s film version of Shakespeare’s Henry V. Released in 1944, the film was intended as a morale booster for Britain as the battle on the European mainland raged. Dedicated to the ‘Commandos and Airborne Troops of Great Britain the spirit of whose ancestors it has been humbly attempted to recapture’, Walton’s thrilling music perfectly matched Olivier’s vision. The Necks and James McVinnie The Secret Life of Organs Music by Squarepusher, Philip Glass and The Necks performed on Leeds Town Hall’s organ Exceptional performers The Necks and James McVinnie explore the secret sounds of Leeds Town Hall’s magnificent organ. The Necks are one of the great cult bands of Australia. Each of the trio’s improvised sets is “a thrilling, emotional journey into the unknown” (The Guardian), making every performance a unique and spellbinding experience. Part of their 30th anniversary season, this concert brings pianist Chris Abrahams out from behind the piano as the trio explore the powerful, intricate and varied sonorities of Leeds’ colossal organ. Previously Assistant Organist at St Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey, James McVinnie is fast becoming the country’s leading performer of new organ music.

Royal Northern Sinfonia Kyra Humphreys director Tim Orpen clarinet Stephen Reay bassoon Peter Francomb horn Mozart Symphony No 33 Strauss Duet Concertino Mozart Horn Concerto No 4 Tchaikovsky Suite No 4: (Mozartiana) Written in 1947, Duet Concertino was Strauss’ final composition, and as with many of his later works, was composed for a smaller orchestra. He dedicated the work to his friend who played bassoon in the Vienna Philharmonic. Strauss said that throughout the piece the bassoon represents a prince in pursuit of a princess, the clarinet. With its memorable hunting theme and use of hunting calls in the melody, Mozart’s Horn Concerto No 4 is an audience favourite. We complete our concert with Tchaikovsky’s tribute to Mozart, written for the 100th anniversary of Don Giovanni, a piece that made a huge impression on Tchaikovsky. The piece consists of orchestral arrangements of three lesser-known piano works by Mozart and one written by Tchaikovsky, whose aim was to showcase Mozart’s talent to a wider audience.

Including film projections and titles, these dramatic performances enhance the masterly storytelling of Wagner’s mythological creation and are ideal for newcomers to the Ring and for Wagner fans alike. Performed individually to five-star reviews, the cumulative power of this unique music drama is most palpable when the four parts are experienced in straight succession. Moscow State Symphony Orchestra Having suffered from depression and writer’s block for two years, Rachmaninov wrote his Piano Concerto No 2 to celebrate his recovery, dedicating it to his doctor who used hypnotherapy to improve his mental health and self-confidence. The music features heavily in the 1945 film Brief Encounter.

Shostakovich Festive Overture Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No 2 Shostakovich Symphony No 5
This UK tour by the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra is supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.
Shostakovich completed his Festive Overture in just three days, for a concert in 1954. Musicologist Lev Lebedinsky recounted that “He laughed and chuckled as he wrote”, and as he did this he produced one of his most remembered orchestral works. Seventeen years earlier, Shostakovich wrote his fifth symphony at quite a different time in his life, following the unsuccessful premieres of his highly criticised opera, Lady Macbeth, and his ballet, The Limpid Stream. His music had been banned by Stalin and he was under pressure to please a government he detested. Nevertheless, there was a forty minute standing ovation after the first performance of this symphony. Orchestra of Opera North Leeds Festival Chorus, Leeds Philharmonic Chorus and Bradford Catholic Youth Choir For the final concert of Leeds International Orchestral Season 2015/16, we present one of the largest classical choral works ever written, Mahler’s Symphony No 8, for the first time on the Leeds Town Hall stage in over 20 years.
David Hill conductor Lee Bisset soprano Katherine Broderick soprano Kate Valentine soprano Sarah Castle mezzo soprano Madeleine Shaw mezzo soprano
Peter Wedd tenor Andrew Foster Williams baritone Michael Druiett bass Mahler Symphony No 8 (Symphony of a Thousand)
Subtitled Symphony of a Thousand due to the vast numbers of performers required, this evening’s performance will feature the joint forces of three different choirs along with the Orchestra of Opera North and eight soloists. The work is in two parts, with the first section based on Latin text from the hymn Veni creator spiritus. This hymn greatly inspired Mahler, who said “I saw the whole piece immediately before my eyes, and only needed to write it down as though it were being dictated to me.” The second part of the work uses words from the final part of Goethe’s Faust, and continues with the theme of love conquering all. Mahler was undeniably proud of his work, describing it as his “gift to the nation ... a great joy-bringer.”

After a gap of six years, Yorkshire Voices return to Leeds Town Hall to present the choral tour de force which is Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis. The aim of this musical partnership between The Harrogate Choral Society and the Yorkshire Philharmonic Choir, both fine choirs in their own right, is to showcase works that are seldom performed because the musical resources required are often beyond that available to a single society. Missa Solemnis has not been performed in Leeds for several years, so here is a rare opportunity to experience what is generally considered as one of the composer’s supreme achievements.
