Amongst these pages the Leeds Town Hall Spring/Summer 2018 programme offers a feast of music, comedy, film, and special events. A world-class programme awaits in Leeds’ most iconic building. Leeds International Orchestral Season continues to be one of the finest orchestral programmes in the country. Continuing the 2017/18 season the Hallé, one of the world’s finest symphonic ensembles, performs the first concert of the year with Anna Tsybuleva, the 2015 Leeds International Piano Competition winner, performing Ravel’s Piano Concerto. The season continues with the finest British orchestras and visits from world-class ensembles including Czech Philharmonic Orchestra (10 Feb), Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra (10 Mar) and Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra (19 May). In an extra special performance Maxim Vengerov – the greatest living string player in the world today – conducts and performs with the Würth Philharmonic Orchestra (9 Jun). A rare opportunity to witness the full magnificent range of his artistry.
A number of famous faces from the world of comedy, stage and screen also make a visit to the Town Hall – including Jason Manford (24 Jan), Suggs (15 Feb), No Such Thing As A Fish (11 Mar), Dan & Phil (20 May), Brian Blessed (29 Jun) and Clare Teal (30 Jun). After phenomenal success at Glastonbury 2017, the rocket-fuelled classical outfit Army of Generals joins forces with the world’s only professional ensemble of disabled musicians – the British Paraorchestra – to bring to life the world of classic computer game themes in Play! (20 Mar). Dust off your SNESs, N64s and boot up your Playstations as we embark on a musical adventure into some of the gaming world’s most memorable soundtracks. A rare chance to hear Bradford-born Delius’ lyrical and fascinatingly textured impression of the French capital. His first developed orchestral masterpiece is followed by Ravel’s jazz-influenced piano concerto; the three movement work is full of rhythmically exciting passages, beautiful melodies and energising dissonant harmonies. Elgar’s arrangement of Bach’s Fantasia and Fugue in C minor, orchestrated as a way to help him through the grief of losing his wife, is a haunting contrast to the English composer’s famous Enigma Variations. The engima of the variations is still unknown, and continues to tease musicians even today, whilst the fourteen musical pictures characterise the composer’s wife, friends and even himself in music. Amongst the world’s top symphonic ensembles, The Hallé makes a welcome return to the Leeds International Orchestral Season.

Mozart’s Don Giovanni features his liveliest, most extreme and most romantic music, with the melodramatic and kaleidoscopic overture perfectly outlining the synopsis of this dark opera. Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 5, his last completed piano concerto, is a flood of beautiful and intense sound. The epithet given to this three movement work after Beethoven’s death depicts its stature, difficulty and impressiveness. Whilst it took Brahms fourteen years to complete his first symphony, his second – with its cheerful and flowing melodies – was penned in just a single summer holiday, and led to a series of triumphant European concert tours.

Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony composed in 1822 was abandoned for reasons unknown. The yearning, sweeping first movement is one of the most profound openings in symphonic music, whilst the optimistic second movement shows this composer’s true mastery of orchestration. “Mozart is sweet sunshine” declared Dvořák, perhaps a thought Mozart’s pet starling agreed with. The bird learned the theme from Mozart’s elegant concerto, though sang G sharp where was written G natural, leaving the rendition somewhat off-key! Haydn’s ‘most popular concerto’ is a firm favourite in the trumpet repertoire. It sparkles with glittering articulated passages and vibrant melodic lines. Commissioned by the Haffner family, Mozart’s Symphony No 35 is a light but powerful work with a dramatic opening and a finale to be played “as fast as possible”. The English Chamber Orchestra – the most recorded chamber orchestra in the world – presents an evening of three composers in the great Viennese musical tradition. www.leedstownhall.co.uk

Holocaust Memorial Day
Civic Remembrance Event Join the Lord Mayor of Leeds and hundreds of local people for an afternoon of commemoration in response to the Holocaust Memorial Day theme ‘The Power of Words’. The event remembers the millions who were murdered in the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. With a keynote speech by the Cambodian Ambassador, Her Excellency Dr Rathchavy Soeung, music performed by members of the Clothworkers Consort of Leeds and a performance by Northern School of Contemporary Dance’s Youth Dance Company. There will also be a reading of the seven statements of commitments with candle lighting and a traditional Hebrew memorial prayer sung by the President of Bradford Synagogue, Rudi Leavor, BEM. The years 1878–80 are often described as Antonín Dvořák’s ‘Slavonic period’, during which he was particularly inspired by Slavonic folk music of the time. The Slavonic Dances were inspired by Brahms’ Hungarian Dances and are considered amongst his most popular works. Dvořák’s Violin Concerto is without doubt a masterpiece, containing some of his most haunting melodies and its central theme is one of the finest creations in the concerto repertoire. The best known tune in all Dvořák is the main theme from the second movement of the Symphony No 9 – it was the music from the old Hovis ads, with the cloth-capped little lad pushing his bike up the cobbled road past the coal pits. The influence from his time in America is clear, where Dvořák wanted to understand the ‘music of the people’. The Czech Philharmonic’s mastery of its instruments goes hand in hand with the ability to contribute its skill towards the ensemble’s unified, inimitable sound.

Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C was considered lost until 1961, when a copy of the score was found in the Prague National Museum. Its opening movement is a virtuoso display. The music of Delius’ Two Aquarelles has a sense of sweetness crowded into the smallest space. Mozart’s Symphony No 29 is one of the composer’s most popular works combining intimate chamber music style with a fiery and impulsive manner.

The true magic of Tchaikovsky’s ballets, even for dancers, is created by his score: “The score is the ballet” the critic Croce wrote. A dancing symphony about fate and life woven from an old tale of a princess who pricks her finger and is put under a hundred-year spell. Together with those by Bartók and Shostakovich, Prokofiev’s two violin concertos are considered the finest of the twentieth century; his first demanding the utmost of its soloist to delight listeners. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 4 is one of music’s most dramatic pieces, “Never yet has any of my orchestral works cost me so much labour, but I’ve never yet felt such love for any of my things” he wrote. Taking Holst’s The Planets and Strauss’ iconic tone poems as a starting point, the programme takes in the high-octane pursuit of Grand Theft Auto, the legendary theme to Tetris, the cinematic soundtrack to Final Fantasy VIII and many more. Uniting gamers young and young at heart the programme will include iconic computer game themes from the last four decades. Originally formed for the closing ceremony of the Para-Olympics, The British Paraorchestra first performed PLAY! at Glastonbury Festival 2017. John Adams’ The Chairman Dances, taken from his opera Nixon in China, is also known as Foxtrot for Orchestra and it’s easy to understand why given its rhythmic drive. Gershwin’s epic Rhapsody in Blue needs no introduction; it serves to fuse jazz and classical elements showcasing the versatility of the Orchestra, soloist Sofya Gulyak and Finnish conductor Dalia Stasevska. The concert concludes with Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances. Written while he was in New York, this colourful composition is his final orchestral work, and, for many, his greatest achievement.

Concert performance Based on Oscar Wilde’s Salomé, this is the savage and bloody tale of King Herod’s step-daughter. When Herod’s prisoner Jokanaan rebuffs her advances, Salome vows she will kiss him – no matter the consequences. From the seductive ‘Dance of the Seven Veils’ to the explosive vocal parts, the violent sensuality of Strauss’s score illustrates every moment of the story with unflinching vividness. This is opera at its most extreme, concentrated into 100 exhilarating minutes.

The orchestra thunders and roars, everyone’s silent, and then with one mighty chord, the Town Hall organ blows the roof off. However well you know Saint-Saëns’s Organ Symphony, experiencing it live in concert never gets any less exciting. The composer himself said of his third Symphony, “I gave everything to it I was able to give. What I have here accomplished, I will never achieve again”. The evening also features Boris Giltburg in Prokofiev’s high-octane Piano Concerto No 3 – the most popular of his five piano concertos, and Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite as a playful and upbeat opener.

Booking fees Recent changes in the law now mean that we need to charge the same booking fee regardless of where and how you pay. A booking fee is added to all tickets booked, whether in person, online or over the phone. All prices quoted in this brochure are inclusive of booking fees. Booking fees are calculated at 6% of the ticket value. This fee contributes to our retail, distribution and technology costs. In turn, this allows us to stay an effective business and to invest in the cultural life of Leeds, our technology and the services we provide.
