Talking Statues If statues could talk what stories would they tell? You’re about to find out! Across Leeds, public statues have started speaking for themselves. How does the big stone lion feel about guarding the Town Hall? Does he ever go on a quick walk about when no one is looking? Come and see for yourself! Talking Statues Leeds is a new public arts project which has given voices to ten statues across the city. Pass a talking statue, swipe your phone on a nearby plaque and you will hear the statue talk through your mobile, with Vic Reeves as the Black Prince, Gemma Whelan as a Drury Dame and Brian Blessed, voicing our very own Town Hall lion. Each has a story to tell, together they tell Leeds’ story. The statues will speak until June 2017. Three city statues await the gift of speech. Budding writers are invited to submit monologues. Of all the stars in folk music’s wondrous firmament, few shine as brightly as Yorkshire’s Kate Rusby. ‘Everybody loves and respects Kate Rusby, not just for her lovely voice, but for the way she has moved folk forward while remaining true to tradition...’ Sunday Times
‘...exquisite interpretations of traditional material from the pocket sized folk singer with the heartbreakingly tremulous voice and bawdy Yorkshire wit’ Daily Telegraph
A remarkable interpretive singer, Kate’s soulful vocals resonate with the wistful beauty of an earthbound angel. Inhabiting a lyric with unforced conviction – no matter how old or how modern – she has that rare ability to transport her audience, of touching them emotionally and making each tune live vividly within their experience and imagination. Audiences are sure to be thoroughly entertained by Kate’s choice of much-loved classics from her back catalogue, stretching over her two decades of music making. Kate will be showcasing tracks from her forthcoming new studio album due for release in Autumn 2016. As ever, she will be joined on stage by the fabulous British folk musicians who form her band. The crossover appeal Kate enjoys is unprecedented for a folk singer and has been achieved without resort to compromise. Her wondrous singing and hugely engaging Yorkshire wit, combined with the intuitive support of the band, ensure that audiences will be treated to a truly remarkable and unforgettable concert experience. Borodin Polovtsian Dances Sibelius Violin Concerto Tchaikovsky Symphony No 5
‘Music begins where the possibilities of language end’ Sibelius
Composition was merely a hobby for Borodin, whose full time job was as a chemist. As such, when he died in 1887, many of his works were left incomplete, including the Polovtsian Dances. The premiere of Sibelius’ Violin Concerto was a disaster – he was suffering from alcoholism and had rushed to finish the piece. Neither the soloist nor the orchestra was prepared to perform the extremely difficult score and Sibelius eventually revised the work to make it less demanding. This was to be the first and only concerto he wrote. Tchaikovsky’s fifth symphony begins with a funeral-style theme, which, by the fourth movement, has transformed into a more optimistic march. The most famous performance of this work was in 1941, when, during the Siege of Leningrad, the orchestra continued to play as bombs were heard dropping in the distance. It became a popular piece from then on, used by the choreographer Massine for a ballet, and Glenn Miller set lyrics to the second movement for his song, Moon Love. A B £33.50 £30.50

Weber Overture: Der Freischütz Chopin Piano Concerto No 2 Brahms Symphony No 4
The Overture to Weber’s opera Der Freischütz (literally translated as ‘the Freeshooter’) was composed after the rest of the opera was completed and includes the opera’s main themes. Chopin’s Piano Concerto No 2 was actually the first piano concerto he wrote, but the second to be published. Listen out for influences of Italian opera in the second movement. Chopin was inspired by his crush on a singer at the Warsaw Conservatory and was aged just 20 when he wrote this work. In the third movement we hear the influence of the Polish mazurka. Look out for the violins playing with the wood of the bow in the finale. Brahms’ Fourth Symphony was the last that he wrote, in 1885. Before the premiere, Brahms performed in a version for two pianos with the pianist Ignaz Brüll. It is said that after this event, a critic who was page-turning commented on the first movement “For this whole movement I had the feeling that I was being given a beating by two incredibly intelligent people.” A B £33.50 £30.50

The Hallé Gergely Madaras conductor Katherine Baker flute Marie Leenhardt harp Mussorgsky Night on Bald Mountain (orch Rimsky-Korsakov)
Mozart Flute and Harp Concerto Bartók Hungarian Sketches Borodin Symphony No 2
In an incredible career spanning over seven decades, Petula Clark is a true international superstar and legend. She is the best-selling British female artist in recording history, selling over 68 million records worldwide and to this day she regularly tours throughout the world. Downtown won Petula her first Grammy in 1964, for Best Rock ‘n’ Roll Record and she won her second Grammy the following year, for Best Female Vocal Performance with I Know A Place. One of the key players in ‘the British Invasion’, she scored 15 consecutive US top forty hits. As well as being one of the leading pop stars of the last 50 years, Petula has also starred in more than 30 motion pictures. This extensive UK tour accompanies a new album titled From Now On. The album is a refreshing and inspiring collection of songs that draws upon various influences from Petula’s canvas and astonishing career. The show will feature her hits as well as a selection from her new album.
Night on Bald Mountain was introduced to a wide audience courtesy of Walt Disney’s 1940 animated classic Fantasia. Although the piece was never performed during Mussorgsky’s lifetime, it has become a concert favourite. Originally piano pieces for young learners, Bartók’s Hungarian Sketches are his most popular orchestrations. Each of the five movements paints a folk-influenced picture from early 20th century Hungary, from the menacing Bear Dance to the sound of hiccups on a drunken walk home in Slightly Tipsy. During the time that Borodin was working on his second symphony, not only was he Professor of Chemistry in the Medico-Surgical Academy at St Petersburg, but he also founded a School of Medicine for Women – so it’s no wonder it took him over seven years to complete the work! Eventually premiered in 1887, the symphony demonstrated the composer’s nationalism through rich Russian melodies and rhythmic drive tainted with nostalgia.

After the critically acclaimed release of her new album The Heart Speaks In Whispers, Corinne Bailey Rae has confirmed the dates for her first UK tour in five years, opening in her hometown of Leeds. Both fans and critics have heaped superlatives on her spellbinding performances throughout the summer, including this year’s Glastonbury Festival, a sensational support set for Stevie Wonder at British Summer Time, Hyde Park as part of his Songs in the Key of Life extravaganza, a huge UK arena tour with Lionel Ritchie and further shows at this year’s V Festival, Cornbury Festival and across the USA. The Evening Standard has called her “[the] bewitching queen of British soul [who] oozes charisma…” upon seeing her in concert, whilst the Daily Star claim she is simply “mesmerizing” live. Corinne’s third studio album, The Heart Speaks In Whispers, her first collection of new material for six years, also received rave reviews across the board upon its release in May. With MOJO hailing her resurgence as “a brilliant and very welcome return” and Q Magazine’s declaring Corinne is “getting it right again [with] sultriness and lifeaffirmation”, she has wowed both critics and fans alike. Antony Hermus conductor Pavel Kolesnikov piano
Smetana Overture and Dances: The Bartered Bride Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No 1 Dvorˇák Symphony No 7
The first of Tchaikovsky’s three piano concertos, written around 1875, features a well-known theme at the beginning that he based on a melody he heard being performed by blind beggars at a market near Kiev. This is one of Tchaikovsky’s most popular and recognised works. Dvorˇák’s Symphony No 7, commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society in London, was to be his only commissioned symphony but is widely considered the strongest of them all. Dvorˇák took the London audience by storm as he conducted the premiere of the dark and brooding work in 1885, and wrote to his friend ‘there was pandemonium after every movement!’ The sombre mood of each movement is sometimes linked to the death of Dvorˇák’s mother, but the symphony looks to the future with its brightly triumphant conclusion. Czech National Symphony Orchestra Má Vlast is a collection of six orchestral pieces presenting Smetana’s vision of Czech legend, history and landscape. The fourth piece, From Bohemia’s Forest and Meadows, describes the beauty of Czech countryside, the grandeur of the forest, and a village festival.
Libor Pešek conductor Natalie Clein cello
Smetana From Bohemia’s Forests and Meadows: Má Vlast Dvorˇák Cello Concerto Glass Adagio Beethoven Symphony No 5
Dvorˇák was originally opposed to writing a Concerto for cello, describing the instrument as “too nasal at the top of its range and mumbles at the bottom”, but after hearing another cello concerto, he changed his mind. The second movement, an oasis amongst the fireworks of the first and last, was composed as a moving tribute to his first love who had died. Today this concerto is perhaps the most popular and demanding concerto for cello. The opening notes of Beethoven’s Symphony No 5 make up one of the most recognisable musical motifs ever written, referred to as the ‘fate motif’. The symphony was written during the Napoleonic wars as Beethoven became increasingly deaf, yet its popularity over 200 years later is testament to its impact as a classical work. A B £33.50 £30.50

Verdi Overture: I Vespri Siciliani Verdi Va, pensiero: Nabucco Verdi Prelude to Act III: La traviata Puccini Nessun Dorma: Turandot Rossini Petite Messe Solennelle
Verdi was born and raised in provincial Italy, far from the cosmopolitan allure of the stage, but eventually dominated the Italian opera scene. His desire for the unification of the then divided Italy can be found in his music; I Vespri Siciliani is an opera based on Sicily’s fight for independence in the 1200s, and the chorus Va, pensiero from Nabucco tells the story of Jewish exiles in Babylon. Verdi is also known for his great passionate love stories, like La traviata, one of the most famous operas ever written. Puccini’s Nessun Dorma, perhaps the most famous tenor aria ever written, and a TV and film favourite, is taken from Turandot, a dark opera which reflects Puccini’s turbulent love life. Rossini described his ‘Little Solemn Mass’ as “the last of his sins of old age”. Originally scored for voice, two pianos and a harmonium, the extensive work’s ironic title was even more stretched after he created a version for full orchestra.

Pachelbel’s Canon is one of the most famous orchestral works of all time. Despite having been composed in the 1600s it wasn’t published until 1920. Since then it has become hugely popular and is often performed at wedding ceremonies. Bach’s Double Violin Concerto displays his lyricism through the intricately written lines in the sublime middle movement. Composed around the same time, the original Concerto for Oboe and Violin was actually lost. Thankfully, Bach recycled a lot of his works, and it was rediscovered as an arrangement for two harpsichords. Corelli’s Christmas Concerto was commissioned by an Italian Cardinal and became his most acclaimed work, bearing the inscription ‘for the night of Christmas’. A B £33.50 £30.50
