Welcome to your What’s On at Leeds Town Hall brochure for September to December 2017. As you will see amongst these pages, a season filled with memorable nights out and world-class performances awaits. There really is something for everyone with orchestral concerts, organ recitals, comedians, film screenings, talks, tours, exhibitions and more… The 2017/18 Leeds International Orchestral Season opens with a visit from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (7 Oct). In the season that leads to its 125th anniversary, the orchestra and Chief Conductor Kirill Karabits present Messiaen’s epic Turangalîla-symphonie, last heard here in Leeds in 1998. The season then continues with a programme featuring orchestras from home and abroad: BBC Philharmonic (14 Oct), Manchester Camerata (21 Oct), St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra (28 Oct), BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (18 Nov). Our friend and neighbour, the internationally acclaimed Orchestra of Opera North also makes a welcome return with two concerts – the first celebrating the towering figures of English composition, joined by Leeds Philharmonic Chorus, Leeds College of Music Student Chorus and St Peter’s Singers (25 Nov), the second celebrating three markedly different composers (2 Dec). We’re also delighted to welcome Darius Battiwalla as the new curator of Leeds Lunchtime Organ Music (from 18 Sep), come along and enjoy free recitals during your Monday lunch break.

The season is also marked by a number of popular festivals returning to the city. The 31st Leeds International Film Festival (1 – 16 Nov) continues to celebrate global filmmaking culture, the Leeds International Beer Festival (7 – 10 September) celebrates craft beer from the UK and across the world, and the Ocean Film Festival World Tour (21 Sep) brings a series of short films all inspired by life above and below the waves.

Thursday 7 September, 1pm Using evidence from Georgian and Victorian Leeds, food historian Peter Brears reveals the diets of the town, from the starvation of the poor to the great banquets of the rich.

Please note: for those unable to ascend the clock tower stairs an audio-visual presentation will be available if requested in advance. Access to the clock tower and outside the clock tower is subject to weather conditions, if the weather is particularly bad we retain the right to remove this part of the tour for safety reasons.

The year ends with a number of festive celebrations including the 2017 Lord Mayor’s Carol Concerts (14 Dec) in support of children’s cancer charity Candlelighters, whilst The Snowman is brought magically to life with the score performed live to the film by the Orchestra of Opera North (17 Dec).

Light Night Leeds

As darkness falls, experience the city in a new light… For two nights Leeds city centre comes to life with spectacular large-scale light projections, installations, dance, music and street performances. Many of the city’s iconic buildings, including the Town Hall, open late into the night as artists transform the spaces in a magnificent showcase of their work. Pop in during the evening to explore the venue and witness some remarkable sights.

Shadows and Reflections

One of Britain’s most gifted and unique vocal talents, Marc Almond, takes to the stage at Leeds Town Hall in a very special concert featuring songs and hits from across his 36 year career. The show will feature beautiful new arrangements of hits, iconic torch songs and the ’60s Orchestral Pop for which he has become loved, along with music from his new album Shadows and Reflections.

Arguably the greatest 20th century French composer after Debussy, Messiaen composed his monumental Turangalîla-symphonie (Speed of Life) as a hymn to joy, time, movement, rhythm, life, and death; as he declared: ‘The whole work is a song of love’. Deemed one of the most important pieces of the 20th century it is both a monumental symphony and a virtuosic piano concerto, moving from Hollywood horror to ethereal serenity.

Considered Bizet’s finest orchestral score, his Symphony in C lay undiscovered for 80 years – unperformed in the composer’s lifetime. A fresh, uninhibited piece, the young Bizet (seventeen at the time) was yet to cement his place in history with his opera Carmen. Little did he know this four-movement work would become a staple from the Romantic era.

Beethoven first delved into the world of symphonic writing at the age of 30, finding the form for which he would be most remembered. Intended as an homage to his illustrious masters Mozart and Haydn, Beethoven’s first symphony is inescapably original. His masterful interpretation effectively stakes his claim as the rightful heir to the symphonic tradition. Grieg’s Piano Concerto is one of his most popular works. There’s a reason why the first piano concerto to ever be recorded is so loved – and not just because of its infamous appearance on the 1971 Morecambe and Wise Christmas Special! Like Grieg’s Peer Gynt suite, this is music with a huge, glowing heart – packed with tunes. Manchester Camerata Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons is unmistakeably the composer’s most famous work – and the most recorded piece of classical music of all time. A bravura showpiece for its violin soloist; the concertos are one of the most dazzling examples of musical scene-painting.

The Concerto for two oboes and two clarinets features unusual instrumentation for the period in which it was written, being one of the earliest pieces of baroque repertoire to feature the clarinet. Throughout the work, Vivaldi, master of the concerto form, plays the woodwind instruments off against each other as they weave melodious lines over the infectious accompaniment. Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations reflect an elegant and sophisticated glimpse into the composer's emotional side, and Tchaikovsky’s adoration of the music of Mozart – a composer he revered above all and referred to as the ‘Christ of music’. ‘Probably Britain’s most adventurous orchestra’ (The Times) the Manchester Camerata performs an evening of music by Vivaldi and Tchaikovsky.

Though he was regarded as impossibly avantgarde in his youth, Prokofiev belongs to the same great tradition of Russian music as Tchaikovsky. In his Symphony No 1 – a tuneful and accessible homage to Haydn and Mozart – seldom has 20th century music sounded so transparent or free from care.

If any single composer can be said to encapsulate the essence of Russianness, it is Tchaikovsky. The mammoth three-movement work of Piano Concerto No 2 shows off the composer’s brilliant piano writing and typically imaginative orchestration – undeniably attractive and elaborate, full of exuberant piano and exhilarating orchestral responses. His greatest symphony and, possibly, his greatest work, the ‘Pathétique’ (Passionate) is one of the defining sounds of the Romantic period. Beth Hart

Fire on the Floor The Blues Magazine once dubbed Beth Hart ‘the ultimate female rock star’, and there’s no doubt that her two-decade career is the ultimate thrill-ride. Born in Los Angeles, the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter released albums throughout the ’90s, then reignited in the post-millennium as both a solo artist and head-turning vocalist for guitar heroes like Joe Bonamassa, Jeff Beck and Slash.

Milton Jones is Out There. No, really out there and this time he hasn’t just forgotten his keys. He’s holding up the mirror of truth to society, and he can see right through it… which means it’s probably just a window. In his brand new show he’ll be putting his foot down and lifting the lid on the pedal bin of lies of the media. He will also be scaling the heights of fashion at the risk of falling into a terrible cravat.

Schumann wrote his only violin concerto a year before his final attempt at suicide and eventual death in an asylum. The intended violinist – Joseph Joachim – suspected the concerto contributed to the composer’s madness and so left the tainted manuscript unperformed. Elgar was one of the 20th century’s masters of orchestral writing – his scores almost mosaic like in their ever-changing use of instrumental sounds. In the South is a highly spirited and colourful composition. Hymnus Paradisi is a stunning orchestral and choral work written after the loss of the composer’s son to polio. The deeply affected father kept the work private for fifteen years. You can almost feel that Howells, who composed pieces to reflect the architecture of the cathedrals they were performed in, intended this piece for the soaring skies, where his son now was. Leeds’ acclaimed Orchestra of Opera North presents an evening of music from four of England’s greatest composers.

Mozart composed his final violin concerto at just 21 years old. The piece is infused with enchanting influences from Italian operas and orchestral works. A surprising change to characteristically Turkish music in the final movement, gives the concerto its nickname.

As a young composer, Britten took a job to score films including a short animation. Efficient and creative, he borrowed music written by Rossini and expanded it for full orchestra. Given the film was only five minutes long lots of Britten’s music was discarded, which he then turned into Soirées Musicales.

Of Elgar’s first symphony, Hans Richter proclaimed “Let us now rehearse the greatest symphony of modern times, written by the greatest modern composer – and not only in this country”. The premiere of Elgar’s much anticipated symphony was a massive success, with performances all over the world within weeks.

The venue is equipped with a closed loop system for the hard of hearing.

Booking fees are calculated at 6% of the ticket value and apply to all tickets. This fee contributes to our retail, distribution and technology costs. In turn, this allows us to stay an effective business and to invest in the cultural life of Leeds, our technology and the services we provide.

Designated on street blue badge parking can be found nearby on Oxford Place, Alexander Street, Rossington Street and Portland Crescent.

From 31 August 2017, City Centre Box Office will change the way booking fees are applied. A booking fee will be added to all tickets booked, whether in person, online or over the phone.

Accessible toilets are provided on stalls and gallery level, and there are lowered counter sections at the Box Office and in the Broderick Bar.

We aim to provide as much choice as possible when it comes to seating and viewing options for those with specific access needs. These include wheelchair viewing spaces and Essential Carer seats. Please be aware that the Leeds Town Hall lift cannot be used for evacuation purposes. Gallery seats should only be booked if independent evacuation via the stairs in case of an emergency is possible.
