A True Community Event Benefiting the Lawrence Schools Foundation The Lawrence Schools Foundation and Lied Center of Kansas are proud to announce the third annual, district-wide talent show for middle and high school students. Ovation! will benefit the Lawrence Schools Foundation and showcase the amazing talents of USD 497 students. Held on the main stage of the Lied Center with full production, the community will come together to celebrate all of the immense talent among Lawrence youth. Enjoy the amazing talents of USD 497 students, ranging from instrumentalists to singers and dancers!

Russian National Ballet:

The Sleeping Beauty The Russian National Ballet presents The Sleeping Beauty, a crowning jewel of Marius Petipa’s career, with music by Tchaikovsky. The Sleeping Beauty is a supreme demonstration of the challenge of Petipa’s style—steel pointe work, sharply accented spinning turns, soaring leaps, high extensions and daring lifts, all with lavish stage treatment for this fairy tale. Legendary Bolshoi principal dancer Elena Radchenko is the founder and artistic director of the Russian National Ballet. She has focused the company on upholding the grand national tradition of the major Russian ballet works and developing new talents throughout Russia. With a repertory of virtually all of the great full works, the Russian National Ballet continues to enlighten, inspire and entertain audiences around the world.

KU Percussion Group

Andy Akiho

with Directed by Michael Compitello Andy Akiho is an eclectic composer and performer of contemporary classical music. A virtuoso percussionist based in New York City, his primary performance instrument is the steel pan. Notable engagements include commissions by the New York Philharmonic, the National Symphony Orchestra and Carnegie Hall’s Ensemble ACJW, and multiple concerts at the Kennedy Center. The KU Percussion Group is a nationally renowned chamber percussion ensemble dedicated to performances of new and classic percussion repertoire.

One Earth Tour 2019: Evolution David Wilcox brilliant guitar and stirring vocals by a master songwriter

Cleveland-born David Wilcox is a father, a husband, a citizen and a songwriter. His lyrical insight is matched by a smooth baritone voice, virtuosic guitar chops and creative open tunings, giving him a range and tenderness rare in folk music.

The taiko: a traditional Japanese drum with limitless rhythmic possibilities. Kodo’s mission is to explore these possibilities, and in the process, forge new directions for a vibrant living art form. Since the group’s debut in 1981, Kodo has given over 6,000 performances in 50 countries on five continents. This includes 3,900 performances under the “One Earth” banner, a theme that embodies Kodo’s desire to transcend language and cultural boundaries, all while reminding its audiences of the common bonds we share as human beings and with the natural world.

Cirque Éloize’s SALOON is inspired by the rich legacy of the Wild Wild West. America is expanding. The railroad is stretching westward to lands of untold promise. In the middle of the desert, a town comes to life. The SALOON doors swing open to reveal a motley cast of individuals, each with a tale to tell. The infectious energy of folk music and strains of fiddle set the tone for an acrobatic comedy that sweeps spectators away in a mad flurry. Based on the multidisciplinary talents of its artists, Cirque Éloize expresses its innovative nature through theatricality and humanity, and combines circus arts with music, dance and theatre in a path-breaking and original manner.

Zlatomir Fung , cello As a First Prize Winner of the 2017 Young Concert Artists (YCA) International Auditions, cellist Zlatomir Fung debuts this season in the YCA Series at Merkin Concert Hall in New York and in Washington, D.C. He also won numerous special prizes at the YCA Auditions: the Rhoda Walker Teagle Concert Prize, the Alexander Kasza-Kasser Concert Prize, the Buffalo Chamber Music Society Prize, the Embassy Series Prize in Washington, D.C., the Friends of Music Concerts Prize in Sleepy Hollow, NY, the Paramount Theatre Prize in Vermont and the Slomovic Prize for sponsorship of an Orchestra Partnership Project concerto engagement.

Renee Rosnes, piano—Directed by Dan Gailey Praised for her “suspenseful compositions and mesmerizing performances” (JazzTimes), Renee Rosnes is one of the premier jazz pianists and composers of her generation. The winner of four Juno Awards (Canadian equivalent to the Grammy Award), Rosnes has composed more than one hundred works, receiving commissions from Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Tisch Center for the Arts and more.

Nataanii Means Oglala Lakota/Omaha/ Navajo hip-hop artist

Means was raised on the Navajo reservation in Arizona and then studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. He has been featured on MTV’s Rebel Music: Native America and released his second album, Balance, in 2018.

A native of Minneapolis, 23-year-old pianist Kenny Broberg won the silver medal at the Fifteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition for performances that showed “an imaginative shaping of themes, revelation of inner voices, and an unfailing sense of momentum” (Texas Classical Review).

Erth’s Prehistoric Aquarium Adventure is an immersive experience that invites you to jump in and explore unknown ocean depths, where prehistoric marine reptiles lived eons ago—and maybe live still today! Erth shows are at the forefront of family entertainment, using actors, technology, puppets, science and imagination to create an amazing visual experience that connects young audiences to the real science of paleontology.

The Last Bandoleros combine their unique cultural experiences with rare musical camaraderie, and their exuberance and joy are contagious. In today’s fast-moving world of instantaneous information and converging influences, their original yet universal sound might just be best labeled “great music.” Having recently toured with Sting, and receiving rave reviews from Rolling Stone, among others, The Last Bandoleros are undoubtedly “ones to watch” — People Magazine

Red Green THIS COULD BE IT Featuring new handyman projects, advice to married guys, tips on getting old and much more. The name says it all. Potentially Red’s last tour as he heads out on the road to hold Lodge Meetings all over North America. This might be your last opportunity to catch Red live (or as live as he gets) before he takes a long look at his birth certificate and decides not to keep pushing his luck. This latest one-man show features an apology to the world on behalf of all baby boomers, special contributions from Harold and a couple of other cast members, talking animals, and a final wish from Red to all of his loyal fans. New York Philharmonic String Quartet The New York Philharmonic String Quartet comprises four principal musicians from the New York Philharmonic Orchestra: Concertmaster Frank Huang, Principal Associate Concertmaster Sheryl Staples, Principal Viola Cynthia Phelps and Principal Cello Carter Brey. All four members are winners of multiple prizes, have appeared as concerto soloists with the Philharmonic and orchestras around the world, and have appeared frequently in the Philharmonic’s chamber music series at David Geffen Hall and Merkin Concert Hall.
