The Demo: Concert Version The day the fundamentals of personal computing came to life
Wednesday
MAR 9 7:30 pm
The Demo reflects on a pivotal moment in Silicon Valley’s history and one of its most influential figures. Douglas Engelbart’s 1968 demonstration of the fundamental features of personal computing is known as “the mother of all demos.” It featured the public debut of the mouse, hypertext and other applications that have shaped modern technology. This groundbreaking event is reimagined in its concert version with a unique hybrid of music, media and demonstration by composers and performers Mikel Rouse and Ben Neill. Rouse has created a trilogy of operas, books of string quartets, two feature-length films, and at least one recorded album every year for the past 20 years. Rouse attended the Kansas City Art Institute and the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. He is joined by Ben Neill, the man who Time Out NY called, “a creative composer and genius performer,” and Time Out London called, “a musical powerhouse, a serious and individual talent.” The Demo was commissioned and developed by the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts in association with the eDream Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

PROJECT Trio “A glorious celebration of the music of our time.” Jazz Review PROJECT Trio was forged out of a collective desire to draw new and diverse audiences by performing high-energy, top-quality music. Combining world-class artists with the energy of rock stars, the trio is breaking down traditional ideas about chamber music. Gramophone Magazine recently singled out the genre-defying trio (flute, cello and bass) as “an ensemble willing and able to touch on the gamut of musical bases, ranging from Baroque to nu-Metal and taking in pretty much every stylism in between.”

Interrogating the landscape of technological change
Thursday
APR 21
7:30 pm Mike Daisey, who has been called a “master storyteller” and “one of the finest solo performers of his generation” by The New York Times, is known for weaving autobiography, gonzo journalism and unscripted performance to tell stories that define the world. In this solo performance, Daisey will explore the disrupted landscape of technological change. He will examine a world where smartphones have transformed how we see the world, the dissolving sense of privacy and a shrinking sense of time as we train ourselves to speak in 140 character haiku. What are we gaining? What are we losing? And what are we becoming?

Cyrus Chestnut piano
Eric Alexander tenor saxophone &
Harold Mabern piano
Eric Alexander has earned praise from critics and has established his own voice within the bebop tradition. Arguably the most prolific tenor saxophonist of his generation, he has appeared as a leader, sideman, producer and composer on countless albums. Alexander tours the world and will be joined at the Lied Center by Harold Mabern, a Memphis native, considered one of the most enduring and dazzlingly skilled pianists of our time. Mabern’s career began in the late 1950s and he has recorded with Lee Morgan, Wes Montgomery, George Benson and Freddie Hubbard, among many others. Mabern and Alexander have appeared on more than 20 albums together.
“What makes Chestnut the best jazz pianist of his generation is a willingness to abandon notes and play space,” said Time Magazine. Chestnut reached for the piano before he could walk and by age nine was the church pianist at Mt. Calvary Star Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland. Chestnut’s improvisational skills and unique jazz-gospel and bop style is credited to his early years playing in church. Chestnut continually tours, playing live at jazz festivals around the world as well as clubs and concert halls.
Christian Tamburr
vibraphone & piano DownBeat Magazine recognized Christian Tamburr with the Outstanding Solo Jazz Performer award and the 2013 Critics Choice Top Rising Star award on vibraphone. His newest album, Voyage, remained among the top 10 of the charts in 2014. His music can be heard on TV and in fulllength motion pictures; on stages in Shanghai, Doha, Qatar and Abu Dhabi; and also at various festivals throughout the United States. lied.ku.edu

School-only performances
Public performance
Middle School .
... Middle school through adult ..
The school-only performance tells the bullying story from the point of view of 14-year-old Amy and her peers. On a dare, Amy posted a picture of herself online that she shouldn’t have. Now that she’s transferred to a new school, she hopes she can make a fresh start. But when a rival finds the whole embarrassing history online, this time Amy has nowhere to run.
To reserve your free tickets, call or visit the Lied Center Ticket Office. Limit of four tickets per person. The public performance highlights Allison, a single mother who spends a whole school year trying to fight her daughter’s bullies while being haunted by memories of her own experiences growing up. This performance weaves together video, comic books and interviews to tell the stories of kids stuck on the outside and the adults who feel powerless to help them.
Big Bad Wolf March 28 & 29 Kindergarten to second grade .

Luckily Heidi Hood, the second cousin twice removed of Little Red, is brave enough to see past this wolf’s bad press and a friendship is born. Presented by: Windmill Theatre from Australia
Community Arts Experiences From workshops and preschool performances to master classes and “meet and greets” with world-class artists, the Lied Center offers a wide variety of free engagement experiences for toddlers to seniors.
