They filled up the Lied auditorium and captivated the audience with their talent and charm. Thursday Violinist Simone Porter has been recognized as an emerging artist of impassioned energy, musical integrity and vibrant sound. At 19 years of age, Porter has already appeared with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Houston Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic, and with renowned conductors, including Yannick NezetSeguin, Nicolas McGegan, Ludovic Morlot and Donald Runnicles. She will perform the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35 with the University of Kansas Symphony Orchestra. KUSO is the premier orchestral organization in the KU School of Music. It is led by the internationally renowned Director of Orchestral Activities David Neely, who is recognized for his polished, expressive performances, leading the orchestra in repertoire ranging from the Baroque period to 21st-century masterworks.

Tango Buenos Aires was created by the renowned composer and tango director Osvaldo Requena for the Jazmines Festival at the famous Buenos Aires cabaret Michelangelo. Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn Banjo royalty Sure, in the abstract, a banjo duo might seem like a musical concept beset by limitations. But when the banjo players cast in those roles are Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn—she with the earthy sophistication of a postmodern, old-time singer-songwriter, he with the virtuosic, jazz-toclassical ingenuity of an iconic instrumentalist and composer with bluegrass roots—it’s a different matter entirely. There’s no denying that theirs is a one-of-a-kind pairing, with one-of-akind possibilities. It was inevitable and eagerly anticipated by fans of tradition-tweaking acoustic fare that these partners in music and life (who married in 2009) would eventually do a fullfledged project together. Their debut album as a duo, Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn, is the 2016 Grammy Award winner for Best Folk Album. Fleck, a fifteen-time Grammy winner, has devoted time away from his standard-setting ensemble, Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, to a staggeringly broad array of musical experiments, from writing a concerto for the Nashville Symphony to exploring the banjo’s African roots to playing jazz duos with Chick Corea. Washburn has drawn critical acclaim for her solo albums, done fascinating work in folk musical diplomacy in China, presented an original theatrical production, contributed to singular side groups such as Uncle Earl and The Wu-Force, and become quite a live draw.

Garrison Keillor: Just Passing Through A pioneering force in radio Garrison Keillor was born in 1942 in Anoka, Minnesota, and began his radio career as a freshman at the University of Minnesota from which he graduated in 1966. He went to work for Minnesota Public Radio in 1969. From 1974 through 2016, he created and hosted his popular variety show, A Prairie Home Companion, for some 3.5 million listeners on 700 public radio stations coast to coast and beyond. Keillor has been honored with Grammy, ACE, and George Foster Peabody awards, the National Humanities Medal, and election to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His many books include Lake Wobegon Days, The Book of Guys, Pilgrims: A Wobegon Romance, Guy Noir and the Straight Skinny, and The Keillor Reader (Viking). He is the host of the daily program The Writer’s Almanac and the editor of several anthologies of poetry, most recently, Good Poems: American Places (Viking). In 2006, Keillor played himself in the movie adaptation of his show, a film directed by Robert Altman. He has two grandsons, and in 2007, he opened the independent bookstore Common Good Books in St. Paul, the city where he, his wife and daughter make their home.

Walker’s star began to rise when he was named Associate Principal Flute in the Pittsburgh Symphony, after a stint playing in the US Military Academy Band at West Point. Then, he won the principal flute position in the Los Angeles Philharmonic. After seven successful seasons, Walker left the orchestra and dove into the world of jazz, studio recording and a commitment to teaching. Walker’s bold, expressive playing can be heard on more than 750 motion picture soundtracks, including Beauty and the Beast, A Beautiful Mind, Toy Story, Zoolander and 2010: A Space Odyssey.

Founded in 1971 by Artistic Director Brenda Way, who trained under the legendary George Balanchine, ODC originated as Oberlin Dance Collective. It was named after Oberlin College in Ohio, where Way was on faculty. The adventurous artists loaded up a yellow school bus and relocated to San Francisco in 1976. Since those early days, the company has been widely recognized for its rigorous technique and for its numerous groundbreaking collaborations. Frank Waln is an award-winning, Sicangu Lakota hip-hop artist and music producer from the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. His awards include three Native American Music Awards, the Native American 40 Under 40, the Chicago Mayor’s Award for Civic Engagement and the 3Arts Grant for Chicago Artists. He has been featured on Buzzfeed, NPR, ESPN, MTV and numerous other media outlets. Waln earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia College Chicago and now travels the world performing and hosting workshops focusing on self-empowerment and expression of truth.

Thursday Clarinetist-saxophonist Anat Cohen has won hearts and minds the world over with her expressive virtuosity and delightful stage presence. Eight years in a row, the Jazz Journalists Association voted Cohen Clarinetist of the Year, and she has topped both the Critics and Readers Polls in DownBeat Magazine every year since 2011. She was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, and while attending the Berklee College of Music, honed her jazz chops and developed a deep love for Latin music styles. She moved to New York in 1999, where she established Anzic Records and released numerous albums including Luminosa, her seventh album as a bandleader. Cohen is no stranger to the stage. She has toured extensively, been a guest at the world’s great jazz festivals and her performances have been broadcast internationally. At the Lied Center, she will perform with the University of Kansas Jazz Ensemble I led by Dan Gailey, director of Jazz Studies. The ensemble and its members have received numerous DownBeat Magazine Student Music Awards during the past two decades, including five in the category of Best College Big Band in the U.S. or Canada.

Van Cliburn’s sensational victory at the first Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow in 1958 heralded a new confidence in the quality of American music-making. The quadrennial Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, widely recognized as one of the world’s most important, was organized in 1962 by a group of music teachers and citizens from Fort Worth, Texas, to commemorate his historic achievement and is dedicated to the discovery of the world’s finest pianists. The Cliburn will present the fifteenth edition May 26–June 10, 2017, at Fort Worth’s Bass Performance Hall.

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble Hypnotic Brass Ensemble consists of seven brothers from the South Side of Chicago who come from an extraordinary musical family. Olate Dogs
Winners of America’s Got Talent
Richard Olate grew up in a poor family of 22 children in Chile, South America. At age 12, he rescued a dog from the street and found he had a talent for training. There are many dogs roaming the streets in Chile, so he put together a routine with them and, with his mother’s help, booked his act at schools and small circuses. His older brother soon joined him, and they created a unique dog act. They spent the next few years traveling South America, and in 1989, they premiered in the United States. Olga Kern International Piano Competition Winner Winner of the inaugural Olga Kern International Piano Competition, the Scriabin Prize, the Rome Prize, and numerous other internationally renowned competitions, Chen Guang combines his extraordinary technical capacity with a profound and mature musical sensibility and an exceptional onstage charisma. Concert associations of Europe, America and Asia have hosted him both in recitals and with orchestras, performing programs ranging from William Byrd to Ligeti to modern-day composers. KU graduate Lillian Sengpiehl’s unique interpretations and musicianship have kept her busy for a decade singing new and traditional works within the fields of opera, concert and musical theater. Equally dedicated to traditional and contemporary music, she has performed many classic roles with leading and regional opera companies, including New York City Opera, Opera Bastille, Bergen Norway Opera and Los Angeles Opera. After graduating from KU, she received the Brigit Nilsson Grant and was a finalist in the Midwest Metropolitan Opera Auditions. Sengpiehl moved to New York to pursue graduate work at The Manhattan School of Music on scholarship, where she was the winner of the Classical Singer Competition at Weill Recital Hall. She is currently the Musical Director for All About Kids, a performance program for at-risk youth.

Multifaceted American jazz pianist and composer Emmet Cohen is one of his generation’s pivotal artistic figures. Downbeat praised the “nimble touch, measured stride and warm harmonic vocabulary” he employs to communicate with other musicians and audiences at what he terms, “the deepest level of humanity and individuality.” Cohen’s recent collaborations include projects with legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb and superstar bassist Christian McBride.
Saxophonist, clarinetist and educator Victor Goines has been a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Wynton Marsalis Septet since 1993. As a leader, Goines has ten recordings including his latest release, A Dance at the Mardi Gras Ball, as well as Twilight, Morning Swing, Love Dance, and New Adventures. Goines is the founding director of Juilliard Jazz Studies and is currently the Director of Jazz Studies at Northwestern University.

The 2017–18 IMPACT Award winners will be announced at the Friends Annual Dinner in September. Imani Winds and Sara Bonner were recipients of the 2016–2017 IMPACT Awards.
Invitation Events On occasion, our Friends join us for invitation-only events. This past season, a few special Friends joined us for Performing Arts 3to5. After a successful fundraising campaign for this preschool program, Friends who donated $100 or more were invited to see AXIS Dance Company present a program for our youngest audience.

Jazzy Ash invites students to come along on a jazzy music adventure with her band the Leaping Lizards. Jazzy Ash’s songs celebrate the magic of movement with a lot of sugar and sass thrown in, New Orleans style. Jazzy Ash’s cover of the Louis Armstrong classic Heebie Jeebies is the number one song on SiriusXM Kids Place Live radio, and NPR’s All Things Considered called Jazzy Ash “one of the most talked about children’s music artists this year.”

Rhapsody in Black, written and performed by LeLand Gantt, is a one-man show that explores his personal journey to understand and eventually transcend racism. We follow him from an underprivileged childhood in the ghettos to scholastic achievement and a career that lands him in situations where he is virtually the only African-American in the room. How he manages to cope with being marked “the other” is recounted in remarkable and exquisitely moving detail.

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble consists of seven brothers from the South Side of Chicago who come from an extraordinary musical family. The band freely mixes the brass band tradition with generous doses of hip-hop, soul and funk, creating an intoxicating and boisterous blend. They will also perform an evening concert for the public. Tall Stories’ The Gruffalo is a must-see for lovers of the timeless story. Join Mouse on a daring adventure through the deep dark wood in search of hazelnuts and meeting the cunning Fox, the eccentric old Owl and the party-mad Snake on the way. Will the story of the fabled Gruffalo save Mouse from ending up as dinner for these wily woodland creatures?
Reaching Beyond The Stage The Lied Center is known for featuring world-class performances and reaching out to the community with educational opportunities and engagement experiences for everyone, from toddlers to seniors. Performing Arts Experiences for Students • Preschoolers enjoy Performing Arts 3to5: They are invited to sit on the stage and experience a program created for them by a world-class artist. • School-only performances: More than 10,000 kindergarteners through high schoolers enjoy the power of the performing arts for free. • Third Grade Theatre Arts Day: In partnership with other arts organizations, the Lied Center offers third graders a hands-on exploration of makeup, acting, costuming, movement, lighting and sound.
Community Opportunities • Adult community members are invited to a variety of meet and greets, workshops and master classes with Lied Center visiting artists. • University students perform with artists at the Lied Center, while others participate in classes or artistlead lectures.

Jayhawk Community Student Support As a member of the Jayhawk community, we provide amazing experiential learning opportunities by: • Featuring talented students performing with world-class artists on our stage. • Employing approximately 100 students annually in paid positions and internships, with the support of KU Student Senate. • Providing master class opportunities with visiting artists. Students in many disciplines benefit, including students in music, art, business, journalism and the sciences. • Partnering with Student Union Activities to produce performances, lectures and events that are relevant to students. • Collaborating with the First Nations Student Association to produce the KU Powwow and Indigenous Culture Festival. Ticket Information Ticket Exchange Policy Ticket exchanges are available with at least two weeks’ notice prior to the performance. Policies vary and fees may apply. Friends of the Lied have special exchange privileges. There are no refunds except in the case of a canceled performance. Print Your Tickets at Home Not only can you order your tickets from the comfort of your own home, you can print them there, too (online handling fee applies).
