JUST FRIENDS JAZZ SERIES

A singer, composer and actor, Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums over three decades. Coupled with his gift for storytelling, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of Americana, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues in a convention-defying manner that breaks down barriers. Whether touring in a duo, with his acoustic group or the Large Band, Lovett’s live performances demonstrate not only the breadth of this Texas legend’s deep talents, but also the diversity of his influences, making him one of the most compelling and captivating musicians in popular music. Since his self-titled debut in 1986, Lyle Lovett has evolved into one of music’s most vibrant and iconic performers. Among his many accolades, besides the four Grammy Awards, he was given the Americana Music Association’s inaugural Trailblazer Award and was named an official Texas State Artist Musician. His works, rich and eclectic, are some of the most beloved of any living artist working today.

Black Violin You’ve never heard violin like this before Due to popular demand, the Lied Center is bringing back a favorite. “Black Violin was absolutely amazing last night!!! They filled up the Lied auditorium and captivated the audience with their talent and charm. A truly inspiring group of young men breaking stereotypes and proving that one can do anything once they put their minds to it,” said a Lied Center patron after their 2015 performance. Black Violin blends classical, hip-hop, rock, R&B and bluegrass music. Live, they are accompanied by their incredible band, featuring ace turntable whiz DJ SPS and a drummer. Named one of the hottest bands at South by Southwest in 2013, Black Violin was invited to perform at Bonnaroo and returned to SXSW to standingroom-only crowds.

“Sometimes they play with the intense seriousness of orchestral soloists; at others they fiddle as if at a hoedown; at still others they strum the violin and viola like guitars.” — The New York Times Sponsored by

Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn Banjo royalty Sure, in the abstract, a banjo duo might seem like a musical concept beset by limitations. But when the banjo players cast in those roles are Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn—she with the earthy sophistication of a postmodern, old-time singer-songwriter, he with the virtuosic, jazz-toclassical ingenuity of an iconic instrumentalist and composer with bluegrass roots—it’s a different matter entirely. There’s no denying that theirs is a one-of-a-kind pairing, with one-of-akind possibilities. It was inevitable and eagerly anticipated by fans of tradition-tweaking acoustic fare that these partners in music and life (who married in 2009) would eventually do a fullfledged project together. Their debut album as a duo, Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn, is the 2016 Grammy Award winner for Best Folk Album. Fleck, a fifteen-time Grammy winner, has devoted time away from his standard-setting ensemble, Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, to a staggeringly broad array of musical experiments, from writing a concerto for the Nashville Symphony to exploring the banjo’s African roots to playing jazz duos with Chick Corea. Washburn has drawn critical acclaim for her solo albums, done fascinating work in folk musical diplomacy in China, presented an original theatrical production, contributed to singular side groups such as Uncle Earl and The Wu-Force, and become quite a live draw.

“If anyone can convince a skeptical world of the beauty of the banjo, it is this pair.” — The Guardian

Becoming a Man in 127 EASY Steps Irreverent and dynamic, graceful and playful, Becoming A Man In 127 EASY Steps engages the deep questions and the locker room jokes about what it means to “become” a man. Moving beyond the transgender narrative that focuses on the experience of transition, Scott Turner Schofields’ stories explore the drama and hilarity of living a new life in the “opposite” gender. The show’s “choose your own adventure” format invites patrons to decide live which stories they will hear during each performance. Schofield is a writer, performer and educator creating theater about gender and sexuality in the Deep South. He is also a man who was a woman and a lesbian turned straight guy. Schofield became the first openly transgender actor on daytime television, and the first female-to-male person in a major recurring role on broadcast TV, as Nick on CBS’s The Bold and the Beautiful.

Dublin Irish Dance: Stepping Out An extravaganza of sights and sounds of Irish culture A talented cast brings to life the epic tale of Celtic culture, carrying its traditional melodies and steps to the new world with a gala celebration of Irish music and dance. The journey begins in rural Ireland, prior to the famine, in kitchens, barns and fields. As the great hunger closes in, the people look west, across the ocean to New York City. Mingling with immigrants from around the globe, the Irish congregate in dance gatherings, some bound for the Appalachian Mountains where ancient Irish melodies fuse with African rhythms, creating American tap dance and early roots music. The journey leads us to the present moment, celebrating the incredible evolution of Irish traditional dance and music— showcasing the new pioneers who will define the new standard of traditional Irish music and dance.
