With a career that encompasses five Grammys, numerous chart successes, personal and professional accolades, as well as collaborations with some of the world’s most prominent artists, Michael McDonald remains an enduring force in popular music. Hailing from St. Louis, McDonald arrived in Los Angeles in the early 1970s, honing his talents as a studio musician before becoming an integral part of Steely Dan. In the mid‑‘70s, McDonald was invited to join the Doobie Brothers as the band redefined its sound, with McDonald serving as singer, keyboardist and songwriter on such Top 40 singles as “Takin’ It To The Streets,” “It Keeps You Runnin’,” “Minute By Minute” and “What A Fool Believes.” Throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, McDonald’s solo career took off with a string of hits, including “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near),” “Sweet Freedom,” “On My Own” (with Patti LaBelle) and the Grammy-winning James Ingram duet “Yah Mo B There,” plus he co-wrote the Van Halen hit “I’ll Wait.” McDonald has performed with a who’s who of critically acclaimed artists across a number of genres, including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Joni Mitchell, Vince Gill and Grizzly Bear.

Conducted by Carolyn Watson Blake Pouliot, 22-year-old Canadian violinist, is a charismatic and multifaceted performer who has garnered many accolades, such as becoming the 2016 Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal Manulife Competition Grand Prize Winner. Since his solo orchestral debut with the Toronto Trinity Chamber Orchestra at age 11, he has appeared with the Aspen Philharmonic Orchestra, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra in Bulgaria and the Colburn Orchestra at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, among others. Pouliot has performed with many of the world’s most celebrated conductors, including Sir Neville Marriner, Nicolas McGegan and Tito Muñoz, to name a few. He performs on the 1729 Guarneri del Gesù, on generous loan from the Canada Council for the Arts Musical Instrument Bank as First Laureate of their 2015 Competition. Pouliot will perform the Brahms Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77 with the KU Symphony Orchestra (KUSO). KUSO is the premier orchestral organization at the KU School of Music, and it will be led by Carolyn Watson in her first appearance with the orchestra. It performs standard orchestral repertoire from the Baroque period to 21st-century masterworks, as well as occasional premieres of new works.

With a career spanning more than 30 years as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist and conductor, Joshua Bell is one of the most celebrated violinists of his era. An exclusive Sony Classical artist, Bell has recorded more than 40 CDs garnering Grammy, Mercury, Gramophone and Echo Klassik awards, and he is the recipient of the Avery Fisher Prize. Named the music director of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields in 2011, he is the only person to hold this post since Sir Neville Marriner formed the orchestra in 1958. Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis World Premiere: 25th Anniversary Commission Honoring 15 KU Basketball Luminaries
th ANNIVERSARY
In celebration of the Lied Center’s 25th Anniversary, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis (JLCO) will premiere a new work commissioned by the Lied Center. Each of the 15 members of the JLCO will compose one movement to capture the spirit of a beloved KU basketball legend. This project represents the first time the JLCO has been commissioned to create a new work as a collective. The combination of the world’s greatest jazz orchestra with the tradition of basketball that runs so deep at the University of Kansas will result in an unforgettable performance. Through the generosity of private donors, each movement of the 25th Anniversary Commission is sponsored. Net proceeds of this project will help fund the Lied Center’s Performing Arts Access Endowment, which will enable every student in Lawrence Public Schools to attend a world‑class, age-specific performance on an annual basis. Amirah Sackett Muslim American hip-hop dancer An internationally recognized hip-hop dancer, choreographer and teacher, Amirah Sackett explores and embodies her Muslim American identity through combining hip-hop movement and Islamic culture. She is widely known for her choreography and performance ensemble creation, “We’re Muslim, Don’t Panic,” which reached viral video fame after being featured on POPSUGAR Celebrity, The Huffington Post, AJ+ and Upworthy. Sackett was honored to be a TEDx speaker, and a guest performer and lecturer at Harvard University. In her performance at the Lied Center, Amirah will share her latest solo work, using the poetry of 13th-century Islamic scholar and poet Rumi.

Dan Zanes & Claudia Eliaza inclusive family entertainment
Grammy Award-winner Dan Zanes and his wife, Haitian American jazz vocalist and music therapist Claudia Eliaza, perform children’s music in a highly interactive show. The audience is always invited to sing and dance along in what might be called a casual and educational party atmosphere. The music, based on a variety of folk traditions, is homespun, sophisticated and artful. From thrift-shop basements to Carnegie Hall, from Brooklyn to Bahrain, Zanes has been introducing new songs and reconnecting people to the forgotten music of the past. Referred to as “the family-music genre’s most outspoken and eloquent advocate” by Time Magazine, his critically acclaimed music has been featured on Sesame Street, Playhouse Disney, Nickelodeon, HBO Family and Sprout. One Earth Tour 2019: Evolution The taiko: a traditional Japanese drum with limitless rhythmic possibilities. Kodo’s mission is to explore these possibilities, and in the process, forge new directions for a vibrant living art form. This year, we celebrate our 25th anniversary. When Ernst F. Lied passed away in 1980, his long-time assistant, Christina Hixson, was appointed the sole trustee of the Lied Foundation Trust. An extraordinary woman, she established the Lied Performance Fund to make the arts more accessible to the people of Kansas. In 1988, the Lied Trust gave a gift of $10 million to build the Lied Center of Kansas, which opened in 1993, and has since been recognized as one of the ten most influential university presenters in the country and one of the top attractions in the state of Kansas. In addition to its public performances, the Lied Center has engaged with more than 160,000 public school students through performances and special programs. Each year, over 10,000 preschool through 12th graders attend free, school-only performances and arts activities, with additional programs for students in Lawrence and across Kansas. There are currently about 1,000 donors to the Friends of the Lied. Your gifts help provide world-class performing arts to the community and reduce ticket prices for these programs. Passing It Forward
The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis (JLCO) will present “Jazz for Young People” to our middle school audiences. This special, youth-focused concert is hosted by JLCO Music Director Wynton Marsalis, who will introduce key musical concepts and other jazz fundamentals. The JLCO, comprising 15 of the finest jazz soloists and ensemble players today, will also perform a new work commissioned by the Lied Center honoring 15 KU basketball legends in a public concert on October 11, 2018. Cecilia Maria is a sensitive musical prodigy, making a quiet name for herself in a harsh world, until one night when her magical, musical hat “Capello” goes missing. They Called Her Vivaldi takes us on a mysterious and comical adventure as Cecilia Maria journeys over cobblestones and canals looking for her musical hat, meeting many interesting characters along the way. This production, full of beautiful music, lyrical prose and hilarious characters, celebrates the power within us all to follow our dreams and trust ourselves.
Few dance companies can match the sheer joy and exuberance conveyed by this internationally renowned ensemble. The company will create an interactive, vibrant performance introducing our youngest audience members to one of America's first art forms. Since founding this contemporary dance company nearly three decades ago, David Parsons has produced a vast body of work that is quintessentially American and extraordinarily engaging and uplifting. The company will also have a public performance at the Lied Center on April 26, 2018. More information on page 20.
Tapestry Dance Company takes a diverse and dynamic look at “The American Dream” through its new work, Passing It Forward. How does one navigate through the complexities of race, culture, gender identity and equal rights? This work poses these questions through a tapestry of unique, individual voices and stories. Through historical traditions and new works of tap dance set to a diverse musical score of spoken-word poetry, hip-hop, jazz and American classics, Passing It Forward sets a rhythm of communication, hope and healing. The school performances will feature local students from the two high schools in Lawrence.

Becoming a Man in 127 EASY Steps
• Third Grade Theatre Arts Day: In partnership with other arts organizations, the Lied Center offers third graders a hands-on exploration of makeup, acting, costuming, movement, lighting and sound. • Lied Across Kansas: World-class artists produce performing arts experiences for students in the Sabetha, Russell, Hays and Salina areas. More information on page 23. • Ovation!: Each year, the Lied Center partners with the Lawrence Schools Foundation to produce the Ovation! USD 497 Talent Show, celebrating the amazing talents of middle and high school students in a community event benefiting the foundation.

Ticket Information Ticket Exchange Policy Ticket exchanges are available with at least two weeks’ notice prior to a performance. Policies vary, and fees may apply. Friends of the Lied have special exchange privileges. There are no refunds except in the case of a canceled performance. Print Your Tickets at Home Not only can you order your tickets from the comfort of your own home, you can print them there, too (online handling fee applies).
