Welcome to your Lied Center’s 25th Anniversary Season! We are so grateful to the entire community and especially our Friends of the Lied for supporting us over the last quarter century. As a thank you, please look out for details regarding our “Lied Loves Lawrence” festival on September 14 & 15, 2018, featuring free performances, treats and interactive workshops. The events on this weekend are in honor of Christina M. Hixson, whose leadership made it possible to build the Lied Center. We are excited to have made significant progress in raising funds for our Hearing Loop Campaign, but we still have some work ahead of us. Please contact me if you are interested in supporting this project, which will greatly improve the performing arts experience for the hearing impaired. Thank you for taking the time to explore your silver anniversary season. Derek S. Kwan, executive director kwan@ku.edu • 785-864-2792

th ANNIVERSARY

In celebration of the Lied Center’s 25th Anniversary, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis (JLCO) will premiere a new work commissioned by the Lied Center. Each of the 15 members of the JLCO will compose one movement to capture the spirit of a beloved KU basketball legend. The combination of the world’s greatest jazz orchestra with the tradition of basketball that runs so deep at the University of Kansas will result in an unforgettable performance. Through the generosity of private donors, each movement of the 25th Anniversary Commission is sponsored. Net proceeds of this project will help fund the Lied Center’s Performing Arts Access Endowment, which will enable every student in Lawrence Public Schools to attend a world‑class, age-specific performance on an annual basis. ELF The Musical is the hilarious tale of Buddy, a young orphan child who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported back to the North Pole. Unaware that he is actually human, Buddy’s enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father, discover his true identity and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas. This modern-day Christmas classic is sure to make everyone embrace their inner ELF. Based on the beloved 2003 New Line Cinema hit, ELF features songs by Tony Award nominees Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin (The Wedding Singer), with a book by Tony Award-winners Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers, Hairspray) and Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone).

The New York Times says that ELF is “SPLASHY, PEPPY, SUGAR-SPRINKLED HOLIDAY ENTERTAINMENT!” And USA Today calls ELF, “ENDEARINGLY GOOFY!”

Dan Zanes & Claudia Eliaza inclusive family entertainment

Grammy Award-winner Dan Zanes and his wife, Haitian American jazz vocalist and music therapist Claudia Eliaza, perform children’s music in a highly interactive show. The audience is always invited to sing and dance along in what might be called a casual and educational party atmosphere. The music, based on a variety of folk traditions, is homespun, sophisticated and artful. From thrift-shop basements to Carnegie Hall, from Brooklyn to Bahrain, Zanes has been introducing new songs and reconnecting people to the forgotten music of the past. Referred to as “the family-music genre’s most outspoken and eloquent advocate” by Time Magazine, his critically acclaimed music has been featured on Sesame Street, Playhouse Disney, Nickelodeon, HBO Family and Sprout. Dan and Claudia believe that “sensory friendly” is the future of family entertainment and have committed to presenting all of their various performances in this inclusive manner.

Loudon Wainwright III

Lucy Kaplansky

American songwriter, folk singer, humorist and actor

brilliant guitar and stirring vocals by a master songwriter

unique singer-songwriter

Grammy Award-winning Loudon Wainwright III’s long and illustrious career is highlighted by more than two dozen album releases, as well as several movie and TV credits. Wainwright’s songs have been recorded by Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash and Earl Scruggs, among others. He is perhaps best known for the novelty song “Dead Skunk (in the Middle of the Road)” and playing Captain Calvin Spalding, the “singing surgeon” on M*A*S*H.

Cleveland-born David Wilcox is a father, a husband, a citizen and a songwriter. First inspired to play guitar after hearing a fellow college student playing in a stairwell, Wilcox is now 18 records into a career marked by personal revelation and wildly loyal fans. His lyrical insight is matched by a smooth baritone voice, virtuosic guitar chops and creative open tunings, giving him a range and tenderness rare in folk music. Considered a “songwriter‘s songwriter,” his songs have been covered by artists such as k.d. lang and many others. In addition to his writing prowess, his skills as a performer and storyteller are unmatched. He holds audiences rapt with nothing more than a single guitar, thoroughly written songs and a fearless ability to mine the depths of human emotions of joy, sorrow and everything in between, all tempered by a quick and wry wit.

new world music from a geometric perspective Indian classical violinist and mathematician Purnaprajna Bangere and David Balakrishnan, of the multiGrammy Award-winning Turtle Island Quartet, have created a new musical syntax based on a geometric framework that integrates Indian classical music and Western music, encompassing elements from classical, blues and jazz. Tootie Heath Trio

Vincent Herring Duo

Sara Gazarek Duo

Albert “Tootie” Heath (drummer) has long been a powerful force in the creation of American music. He shared the bandstand with Thelonious Monk and Lester Young and made his recording debut with John Coltrane. Now in his mid-eighties, he has chosen to unite with young titans Emmet Cohen (piano) and Russell Hall (bass). This unique collaboration is a rare moment in contemporary jazz—a “passing of the torch,” that helps render this music forever modern.

Saxophonist Vincent Herring’s intense, soulful, multi-noted style and ebullient swing have excited audiences worldwide. Herring has earned his spot in the jazz pantheon playing alongside legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey and Freddie Hubbard. Pianist Dave Kikoski, an affecting modernist, distills the best in jazz and popular music and infuses every song with attentiongetting brilliance. Innovation and individualism set Kikoski apart from the scores of pianists who currently make their home within the mainstream tradition.

Sara Gazarek has emerged as a strikingly original artist with limitless potential. Blessed with a gorgeous, translucent voice, excellent pitch and supple sense of time, Gazarek is steeped in the jazz tradition, but is not afraid to embrace the music that moves her generation. With three highly acclaimed CDs under her belt at the young age of 30, she has been hailed by the LA Times as “the next important jazz singer.”

W

elcome to your Lied Center of Kansas! I am honored to serve as President of the Friends of the Lied Board for the upcoming season.

This year, we celebrate our 25th anniversary. When Ernst F. Lied passed away in 1980, his long-time assistant, Christina Hixson, was appointed the sole trustee of the Lied Foundation Trust. An extraordinary woman, she established the Lied Performance Fund to make the arts more accessible to the people of Kansas. In 1988, the Lied Trust gave a gift of $10 million to build the Lied Center of Kansas, which opened in 1993, and has since been recognized as one of the ten most influential university presenters in the country and one of the top attractions in the state of Kansas. In addition to its public performances, the Lied Center has engaged with more than 160,000 public school students through performances and special programs. Each year, over 10,000 preschool through 12th graders attend free, school-only performances and arts activities, with additional programs for students in Lawrence and across Kansas. There are currently about 1,000 donors to the Friends of the Lied. Your gifts help provide world-class performing arts to the community and reduce ticket prices for these programs. By becoming a Friend, you will receive special benefits, such as discounted ticket prices, advance ticket purchase opportunities and more. Please consider becoming a Friend to help the Lied Center continue to offer excellent arts programs for all.

• Barrier-free entrances and wheelchair seating locations are available on all levels. • Our Assistive Listening Device (ALD) system uses radio frequency, which eliminates issues with sound quality and operates similar to a radio station broadcast. It works with earbuds or hearing loops. Assistive-listening devices are available at the Audience Services Desk in the main lobby. And, coming soon, we will install a potential hearing loop upgrade (dependent on funds raised), so sound can be delivered directly into individuals’ T-coil enabled hearing aids, without an ALD. • Sign language interpretation services are available with two weeks’ notice prior to the performance. • Large-print and Braille programs and audiodescription services are available with two weeks’ notice prior to the performance.

Call the Ticket Office at 785-864-2787 or 785-864-2777 (TDD) for more information.
