This year, we are ecstatic to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Lied Center’s partnership with Lawrence Public Schools through a participatory art installation that will invigorate our lobby. Bruce Hornsby, the creatively insatiable pianist, composer, singer-songwriter and dulcimerist, has built one of the most diverse and adventurous careers in contemporary music. As bandleader with Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers, he freely moves between bluegrass, jazz, rock, pop and more, drawing from a vast wellspring of American musical traditions. The three-time Grammy winner’s musical diversity and artistic virtuosity is evident in his long list of collaborations with musicians such as the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, Chaka Khan, Brandon Flowers (of the Killers), Eric Clapton, Sting, Elton John and Branford Marsalis, among many others. His restless musical spirit always leads him to exciting new projects, like writing and performing music for the recent Oscar-winning film BlacKkKlansman.

It’s appropriate that Boz Scaggs’ recent album is called Out of the Blues, since the blues is what first sparked his five-decade musical career. Throughout the years, Scaggs has continued to mine a personalized mix of rock, blues and R&B influences, along with a signature style of ballads on such influential ‘70s albums as Moments, Boz Scaggs & Band, My Time, Slow Dancer and 1976’s Silk Degrees. The latter release spawned three top-40 hit singles: “It's Over,” “Lido Shuffle” and the Grammy-winning “Lowdown.” Silk Degrees was followed by the albums Down Two Then Left and Middle Man, and such hit singles as “Breakdown Dead Ahead,” “Jo Jo” and “Look What You've Done to Me.”

Buddy Guy A true titan of the blues and guitar icon

Buddy Guy has the blues running through his veins. He is renowned for his raw, blistering vocals and electrifying guitar playing. He has been cited as an influence on other guitar giants, such as Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Guy’s legendary career spans over 50 years and is decorated with a plethora of awards and accolades, including eight Grammy Awards and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He remains a vital and current musician progressing the blues forward without losing sight of its roots, and the title of his latest album says it all: The Blues Is Alive and Well. Guy regards himself as a caretaker of the blues. Having learned from the likes of Muddy Waters, Otis Rush, Guitar Slim and Magic Sam, he explains, “I just take what they taught me and keep adding to it.” There’s no question why Eric Clapton has proclaimed Guy “the best guitar player alive.”

Juan-Miguel Hernandez is widely regarded as one of the finest young viola talents of his generation. He has performed as soloist and chamber musician in some of the world’s leading halls, including Carnegie Hall and the King’s Place (London), among many others. Hernandez won the first prize at the International Johannes Brahms Competition (Austria) and the ninth National Sphinx Competition, and in 2016, Hernandez was appointed as a professor at the Royal Academy of Music (London). Beyond his extensive classical repertoire, he has regularly performed with jazz legends Gary Burton, Stanley Clarke, Paquito D’Rivera and Chick Corea.

Kit Yan’s poetry explores their identity as transgender, queer and an Asian American from Hawaii. Yan’s award-winning solo slam-poetry show, Queer Heartache, is a testament to the resilience of queer love, in all its forms, in the face of heartbreaking barriers everywhere—from the dating pool to the medical establishment. To most people, classical, hip-hop, funk and R&B are musical genres. But to revolutionary music group Black Violin, they’re ingredients for a sound like no other. Comprising classically trained violist and violinist Wil B. and Kev Marcus, Black Violin combines their classical training and hip-hop influences to create a distinctive multi-genre sound that is often described as “classical boom.”

The group has shared stages with top artists, including Kanye West, Aerosmith and Tom Petty, and they have creatively collaborated with the likes of Wu-Tang Clan, Wyclef Jean and Alicia Keys. With their high-energy performances and inspiring dedication to educational outreach, the Lied Center is thrilled to bring back this crowd favorite and IMPACT Award recipient.

David Sedaris Best-selling author and humorist

David Sedaris, beloved satirist, will read new and unpublished material on the Lied Center stage as well answer questions and sign books at the event. With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, Sedaris has become one of America’s preeminent humor writers.

The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that Sedaris is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today. Calypso, his latest collection of essays, is a New York Times bestseller and a Washington Post Best Book of the Year.

Best known for his personal essays and short stories, Sedaris is also the author of Barrel Fever, Holidays on Ice, Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, When You Are Engulfed in Flames, Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls and Theft By Finding: Diaries (1977–2002). He is the author of Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary, a collection of fables with illustrations by Ian Falconer. Each of these books was an immediate bestseller. He was also the editor of Children Playing Before a Statue of Hercules: An Anthology of Outstanding Stories. His pieces regularly appear in The New Yorker and have twice been included in The Best American Essays. Since its inception in 1992, the Brentano String Quartet has appeared throughout the world to popular and critical acclaim. “Passionate, uninhibited and spellbinding,” raves the London Independent; The New York Times extols its “luxuriously warm sound [and] yearning lyricism.” The Quartet has performed in the world’s most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York, the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Sydney Opera House, among others. The Quartet is named for Antonie Brentano, whom many scholars consider to be Beethoven’s “immortal beloved”—the intended recipient of his famous love confession.

The Quartet will be joined by special guest Dawn Upshaw, soprano and five-time Grammy Awardwinner. Joining a rare natural warmth with a fierce commitment to the transforming communicative power of music, Upshaw has achieved worldwide-celebrity status as a singer of opera and concert repertoire ranging from the sacred works of Bach to the freshest sounds of today.

Repertoire will include Respighi’s Il tramonto and Schoenberg’s String Quartet No. 2 in F-sharp Minor, Op. 10.

Melissa Etheridge is one of rock music’s great female icons, and she’s returning to her home state to take the stage at the Lied Center of Kansas! She stormed onto the American rock-music scene in 1988 with the release of her critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, which went double platinum. A trailblazing fusion of hip-hop and ballet

Hiplet (pronounced “hip-lay”) is an innovative dance form that combines classical pointe technique with African, Latin, hip-hop and urban dance styles. Performances may incorporate the rhythms of African drums with the music of Tchaikovsky, arabesques and beat-boxing or even Tango en pointe—all while showcasing Hiplet’s trademark sass, hip movements and struts against popular music, from Black Violin to Beyoncé. The Hiplet technique was created by decorated dance instructor Homer Bryant and taught at his studio, the Chicago Multicultural Dance Center, where he envisioned his training to be accessible to everyone.

When videos of Bryant’s Hiplet classes went viral on social media, they were featured on Good Morning America, Buzzfeed and The Huffington Post—and their videos have now amassed over a billion views. Bone Hill: The Concert is an interdisciplinary musical theatre work created by Martha Redbone and Aaron Whitby that brings to light an important piece of American history that’s never been told. Inspired by the lives of Redbone’s family in the hills of coal-mining Appalachia, their story is shared through songs spanning a swath of American music—from traditional Cherokee chants and lullabies to bluegrass, blues, country, gospel, jazz, rock ‘n’ roll and R&B. As a multiracial Cherokee/Shawnee and African American family, this is the story of their connection to the land, the simplicity and sacredness of that connection and the ruptures that threaten to extinguish it. Redbone, an award-winning and charismatic musician, is one of today’s most vital voices in American roots music. This engagement is part of KU’s ongoing Indigenous Cultures Festival.

Direct from Krasnoyarsk, Russia, the Siberian State Symphony Orchestra will embark on a U.S. tour in 2020. Founded in 1977, it quickly earned a reputation as one of the best orchestras from Russia. Its renowned reputation continues to grow under the direction of Vladimir Lande, the orchestra’s artistic director since 2015. Joseph Alessi, trombone Conducted by Paul W. Popiel Seasoned trombonist Joseph Alessi is an active soloist, recitalist and chamber musician.

He was appointed principal trombonist of the New York Philharmonic in 1985 and has been a guest soloist with countless symphony and philharmonic orchestras all over the country and globe. In 2002, Alessi was awarded an International Trombone Association Award for his contributions to the world of trombone music and playing, and he is currently on the faculty at Juilliard.

Alessi will share the stage with KU’s Wind Ensemble conducted

by Paul W. Popiel, director of bands at KU. The New York Times has described the wind ensemble as “one of America’s most esteemed concert bands.” The program will include the Kansas premiere of Quaternity, composed by Bruce Broughton in 2018 and commissioned by a consortium of university and military bands, specifically for Joseph Alessi as soloist.

For three decades, Samuel Ramey has reigned as one of the music world’s foremost interpreters of bass and bass-baritone operatic and concert repertoire. Ryan McMahon is an Anishinaabe comedian, writer, media maker and community activator from Couchiching First Nation in Treaty 3 Territory. Recognized as Indian Country’s most decorated stand-up comedian, McMahon has recorded five comedy specials since 2010: Turtle Island Too in 2010, Hystereotypes in 2011, UnReserved in 2012, Good Neighbour in 2014 and Red Man Laughing in 2015.

Ryan’s comedic storytelling style is fast paced, loose and irreverent as he explores the good, the bad and the ugly between Indian Country and the mainstream.

To commemorate this 25-year partnership, we are raising funds for a unique and interactive art experience for local students and teachers to collaborate with a renowned visual artist. The result—a stunning art installation representing the artistic expressions of each participating student blended together. Students will have a blast while learning about collaboration and creative expression. The community will also enjoy and be inspired by the colorful, energizing and impactful displays throughout the Lied Center lobby once they are completed.

2019–20 Lied Across Kansas Each season, the Lied Center takes the show on the road to provide free performing arts experiences to other communities in Kansas, like Sabetha, Salina, Russell and Hays. Students, educators and community members in these areas experience the arts in an enhanced way through workshops, performances and conversations with world-class artists.

Last season, we celebrated the Lied Center’s 25th anniversary. This season marks the 25th anniversary of the Lied’s partnership with Lawrence Public Schools. We are recognizing this important partnership with new art, created by Carol Bradbury in collaboration with Lawrence students and teachers. Ticket Information Ticket Exchange Policy. Ticket exchanges are available with at least two weeks’ notice prior to a performance. Policies vary and fees may apply. Friends of the Lied have special exchange privileges. There are no refunds except in the case of a canceled performance.

Print Your Tickets at Home. Not only can you order your tickets from the comfort of your own home, you can print them there, too (online handling fee applies).
