Kuok-Wai Lio, piano Born in Macau in 1989, Lio began his piano studies at the age of five. In 1997, he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and in 2006, he entered the Curtis Institute of Music. His principal teachers have included Gabriel Kwok and Gary Graffman and he has participated in masterclasses in Europe with Sir András Schiff. Lio has participated and performed in festivals including Santa Fe, Prussia Cove, Marlboro and Caramoor, as well as, Vancouver Recital Series, San Francisco Performances, Philip Lorenz Memorial Series and Philadelphia Chamber Music Society. He has performed with the Macau Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic, China Philharmonic, Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony Orchestra, Grand Rapids Symphony, Houston Symphony, Russian Symphony Orchestra and Camerata Salzburg. This past season, Lio was one of three pianists, along with Adam Golka and Roman Rabinovich, chosen to perform as part of the Andras Schiff Selects series. During the 2015-16 season, Lio will perform a duo tour with pianist Zoltán Fejérvári, and with musicians from Marlboro. Lio received an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2013. In January 2004, he received a Commendation of Merit given by the Chief Executive of Macau. Zoltán Fejérvári, piano Zoltán Fejérvári has been acclaimed as an “outstanding pianist,” his musicality as “exceptional” and his playing “nothing short of amazing.” He has performed to critical acclaim on three continents, in such venues as Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Grand Hall at the Liszt Academy in Budapest and the Usina del Arte in Buenos Aires. Fejérvári has performed as a soloist with the Budapest Festival Orchestra, the Hungarian National Orchestra, and the Concerto Budapest Orchestra, to name a few. He regularly collaborates with some of the most highly acclaimed musicians of our time, including Zoltán Kocsis, Iván Fischer, Gary Hoffman, Zakhar Bron, Frans Helmerson and Ivan Monighetti, and has given concerts with the Keller Quartet, Kodály Quartet and Budapest Strings. Fejérvári has also been awarded prizes at some of the most prestigious international competitions for pianists. He won first prize at International Competition for Piano and Orchestra Cantú (2013) and second prize at both the RNCM James Mottram International Piano Competition in the UK (2010) and the Ricard Viñes International Piano Competition in Spain (2011). During recent years, he has taken part in several international music festivals, including Tiszadob Piano Festival, Encuentro de Música de Santander, Chateauroux Lizstomania and CMCW Kronberg. For the summer of 2014, he was personally invited by pianist Mitsuko Uchida to participate at the world-renowned Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont. From 2000 to 2005, Fejérvári was a student at Budapest’s Béla Bartók Conservatory. He was then admitted to the Franz Liszt Academy of Music to study with Dénes Várjon and András Kemenes. From 2006 to 2008, he continued his studies on a scholarship to the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía with Dmitri Bashkirov. He also has been selected to participate in prestigious master classes given by the acclaimed pianist András Schiff. Fejérvári’s recording of Liszt’s Malédiction with Imre Rohmann and the Budpaest Chamber Symphony, was awarded the “Grand prix du Disque” in 2013.
