In Mnozil plays Mnozil, Mnozil Brass plays typical Mnozil songs from various mnoziverses. Mnozil is mnozilising through the Wild Mnozilstan, fighting against the fierce Mnozila, falling in love with sweet Mnozily, before, completely mnozorised, finally arriving at Mnoziel, their final destination. Then the Mnozert is over. In a nutshell, Mnozil plays Mnozil is a retrospective of various programs, where the seven gentlemen cheerfully dig into the large treasure chest of shows to enchant any well-trained ear with the pieces that they can listen to over and over again. We guarantee a very entertaining and amusing evening – what else would you expect?!

Mnozil Brass

W H O, W H AT I S M N OZI L? Mnozil is the name of a family from a historical region in Centeral Europe, Moravia, who settled in Vienna in the 19th century. In 1932, a descendant opened a bar, which in the 1960s became the Mnozil Inn. Beginning in 1987, tables in the Mnozil would be reserved for regular customers including musicians, singers and all manner of music lovers who spent many cheerful, boisterous hours there. Every second Thursday in the month, anyone who wished could play and sing until totally exhausted. In fact, it was not uncommon to find oneself buying milk and fresh croissants for breakfast on the way home. Standing on a privileged site, just opposite the former Hochschule fßr Musik und darstellende Kunst (University for Music and the Arts), the building was sold in 1996. Sadly, the soul went out of it after its conversion to a large restaurant. In 1993, the members of Mnozil Brass came to Vienna from all parts of the country to begin advanced brass studies. We were scattered throughout the magnificent city and would meet between lessons in the corridors of the Musikhochschule, where we were taught classical music. This wasn’t really a very sociable place for musical discussion. So our socializing took place at the Mnozil Inn. For a musician, three magic words can lead to almost certain success, if followed conscientiously. These words are practice, practice, practice. Obviously, we all took this to heart. As you know, the constant flow of hot air involved in playing can lead to seriously dry mucous membranes. So we were forced, for the good of our health, to meet up every evening at the Mnozil Inn and follow a course of rehydration. Towards midnight the inhibition threshold was generally so low that those of us who had instruments would quickly put together a program based on the old familiar tunes. We then pressed them to a thirsty public, whose spontaneous and excited reaction was accompanied by the ordering of more and more rounds.

lied.ku.edu | LIVE PERFORMING ARTS

In Austria, certain polkas, marches and concert pieces are played by practically all the brass groups and wind bands in the country. Since we all started out in one of these countless traditional music societies, we have a good knowledge of the repertoire. Furthermore, there were always a few players at the end of official concerts who spent the rest of the evening improvising on these old favorites, usually without music. So we learned at an early age to trust our ears and to play by heart. When we began to play in the Mnozil Inn, we already had a common repertoire to draw on, and quite a few other players would join in for jam sessions. What a laugh we had in those days! Such was the climate in which Mnozil Brass was born. Such scenes occurred increasingly often and our repertoire broadened. Soon we were being invited to play at venues, other than the Mnozil Inn. Prior to the Aufhohrchen Festival in April 1993, we actually managed to arrange a rehearsal, because the event was to be broadcast on radio. Since it was never our plan to give concerts, we played together purely for our own pleasure. This gave us an opportunity to develop the special style we have today. We played for years unselfconsciously and with complete freedom. Because of this, our style developed quietly, with no external pressure. Our whole aim is to retain, and pass on to others, our pleasure in making music. Exclusive North America Representation: John Luckacovic Eleanor Oldham www.2luck.cominfo@2luck.com
