FEB 12 | The Band of the Royal Marines

The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Scotland Although there have been Royal Marines Bands in Scotland since the late 1930’s they were classed as “ship bands” and after the Second World War were disbanded. The band has reorganized a few times in the past decades and since 1996, the band has been accommodated in a purpose built Band Room at the Royal Naval Support Establishment HMS CALEDONIA, Rosyth. Scotland Band is unique as it is the only Royal Marines Band stationed north of London. Royal Marines Bands are celebrated for the quality of their music, visual grandeur and precision drill. On the concert platform they enjoy a similar reputation ensuring their continuing popularity with their audiences. Most members of the band play at least two instruments and are required to perform in wind band, marching band, big band, orchestral and dance band combinations. They also provide jazz, string and woodwind ensembles, making the Royal Marines musician one of the most versatile and adept in military music. In addition to numerous ceremonial duties and concerts, the band travels extensively throughout Scotland, Northern Ireland, the North of England and abroad. As with all Royal Marines Bands, the principal role is to provide musical support to the Naval Service, but within their secondary role the band’s men and women undertake a variety of duties by sea and land on active service. Members of the band have been deployed on active duty in all the major conflicts of the last century. Most recently, they were deployed for six months in support of the global effort to combat the Ebola virus.

The Pipes and Drums 1st Battalion Scots Guards The Scots Guards were formed in 1642 to act as a royal bodyguard to King Charles I. Although very much part of the fabric of the Regiment, there is no mention of Pipers in the Scots Guards before 1704. Queen Anne authorized the formation of a Highland Company of Scots Guards, which was to include one Piper. Pipers continued to serve with the Regiment but purely in a private capacity funded by the officer commanding each company. In 1836, the War Office officially recognized Pipers in the Regiment when each battalion was established for one pipe major and five pipers. Today, in addition to their musical role, pipers and drummers are fully operational infantry soldiers and carry out the roles of Infantry Assault Engineers and Tactical Intelligence Specialists. On operations or training the tradition continues with each company having at least one piper attached to it. The Pipes and Drums travel extensively around the world and have taken part in numerous important events. They are regularly seen on the esplanade at Edinburgh Castle in the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the band has an annual spot on the BBC’s Jools Holland New Year Hootenanny show. Pipe Major Mark Macrae and Drum Major Robert McCutcheon are currently charged with leading the Pipes and Drums.
