UNVEILED: A One-Woman Play Written and performed by Rohina Malik Racism. Hate crimes. Love. Islam. Culture. Language. Life.
Five Muslim women in a post-9/11 world serve tea and uncover what lies beneath the veil in this compelling one-woman show. UNVEILED, written and performed by Rohina Malik, examines myths, stereotypes and intolerance. The premiere was directed by Ann Filmer in May 2009 at the 16th Street Theater where it received critical acclaim, and the entire run and extension was sold out. UNVEILED has been presented at the Tony Award Winning Victory Gardens Theater, Next Theater, Brava Theater, Crossroads Theater in New Jersey, Silk Road Rising and Voyage Theater Company in NYC. Rohina Malik is a Chicago-based playwright, actress and solo performance artist and a proud member of the Dramatists Guild of America. She was born and raised in London, England, of South Asian heritage. Rohina is an artistic associate at the 16th Street Theater and a resident playwright at Chicago Dramatists. Recently, Rohina became a company member of the Voyage Theater Company in NYC. Other works by Rohina include The Mecca Tales and Yasmina’s Necklace, both of which were nominated for a Jeff Award for Best New Work. “I write plays because it’s my way of solving problems. Art, in its many forms, has the power to solve world problems. That’s why I believe we should do everything we can to nurture and protect it.” – Rohina Malik
Audience members will enjoy onstage seating for this event. There will be no intermission for this performance. After the performance, there will be a question and answer session with Rohina. This project is supported, in part, by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. To find out more about how NEA grants impact individuals and communities, visit www.arts.gov.
