LIED
11 12
DEAR FRIENDS, Welcome to the 11/12 Lied Center Season! Each year, we offer something for everyone, giving you an array of dance, music, theatre, comedy, family shows and Broadway. The Lied Center staff works hard to provide a great mix of events that celebrates both the classical and contemporary styles of each genre. Beyond main stage performances, the Lied also does very important work statewide in arts education for students in kindergarten all the way through college and adulthood, as well as professional development opportunities for teachers. Over the next season, we’ll be telling you more about some of our most innovative educational programs, so you can see for yourself what a difference they make. Providing strong arts education opportunities for all Nebraskans is a core part of our organization’s mission and a way to make a positive impact on our state’s quality of life for generations to come. World-class artists await you in the 11/12 Lied Center season! We invite you to join us at Nebraska’s Home for the Arts. Bill Stephan

JOHN F. KENNEDY CENTER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS
The above poem was recited with full choreography by a group of teachers and teaching artists in the first hour of a workshop at the Lied Center in May 2011. This workshop, led by Kennedy Center teaching artist and poet Glenis Redmond, engaged teachers in poetry through hands-on activities that could easily be replicated for the students in their classes, whether they were kindergartners or high school students. Entitled Poetry Off the Page, the workshop provided teachers with ideas to engage students beyond “words on a page” and to help them create and interpret poetry in a fresh way.
EDUCATION
44
Many Lied Center workshops like this are made possible thanks to a partnership with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. through its Partners in Education program. The national program supports performing arts centers like the Lied Center in partnering with school districts to provide professional development opportunities for teachers and teaching artists learning how to integrate arts into their curriculum.

THE TRUTH - byTed Joans “If you should see/a man walking/down a crowded street/talking aloud/to himself/don’t run/in the opposite direction/but run toward him/for he is a poet!/You have nothing to fear/from the poet/but the TRUTH.”
Statewide arts education is at the core of the Lied Center’s mission. The arts serve as extremely effective tools to teach anything from critical thinking skills and problem solving to core subjects such as math, science and language arts. Through this partnership with the Kennedy Center, the Lied Center offers K–12 teachers the opportunities to learn specific strategies in arts integration in order to provide meaningful and engaging learning experiences for for teachers and their students. A NEW HOME Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will call the Lied Center “home” beginning this fall. Both LSO and the Lied Center could not be more pleased at this new partnership. The LSO Board of Directors and staff spent nearly two years discussing this major organizational change, which also includes a new pricing strategy, making more than half of the LSO’s tickets for each performance the same price as a movie ticket. Music Director Edward Polochick is excited for LSO to become the Lied Center Resident Orchestra, which is being made possible by a three-year lead gift from James and Rhonda Seacrest. “It has long been my dream to move to the Lied Center. As the premier venue in Lincoln, it is absolutely where our orchestra belongs,” Polochick said. In addition to the new pricing options, LSO Executive Director Barbara Zach emphasized that it has never been more convenient to attend a symphony event. LSO’s new online ticketing allows audience members to choose specific seats, pay for tickets, and print them from home before the concert. Patrons also can pay for event parking online ahead of time. Lied Center Executive Director Bill Stephan said, "We are thrilled to have Lincoln's Symphony Orchestra call the Lied Center 'home'." For more information about LSO’s programs and services, visit www.lincolnsymphony.org or call 402.476.2211.
ABOUT LSO’S NEW TICKET PRICES: • Premium seats are $25. All remaining seats are $10 • 20|30 Club members (patrons ages 18–39) receive premium seats for only $10 • Music Faculty VIP members (full-time music professors or teachers) receive premium seats for only $10 • Tickets for children ages 5–17 are just $5, made possible by the Lienemann Charitable Foundation Student Ticket Prorgram

ARTS ACROSS NEBRASKA
Since 1997, the Lied Center’s Arts Across Nebraska program (AAN) has toured first-rate artists to the far reaches of the state, providing high quality arts to areas that may not often have that opportunity accessible in their hometowns. In the 10/11 season alone, AAN traveled to six cities across the state including David City, Kearney, North Platte and Scottsbluff. In total, the program served 6,886 Nebraskans. Touring acts are diverse, including everything from a Native American dance ensemble to a GRAMMY® Award-winning string ensemble. Tours also have a strong educational component, providing teacher guides, pre-show workshops and student matinees.

The impact is significant. Last year’s benchmark survey on the Many Moccasins Native American dance tour revealed that as a direct result of the experience, 95% of students were more interested in learning about Native American and other cultures. Perhaps the most staggering number is this: through this program, 422 students participated in the performing arts for the first time in their lives. To learn how to bring Arts Across Nebraska to your community, see education.liedcenter.org, call 402.472.3215 or email pwahlqvist2@unl.edu. FUNDED BY:
The Lied Center coordinates each tour, negotiates contracts and dates and also provides technical staff and equipment for the tour. Providing this service at greatly reduced costs to partner venues is part of the Lied’s statewide mission to make the arts accessible to all Nebraskans.
