LIED CENTER FOR PERFORMING ARTS

Black Violin

Celebrating a Historic Year at the Lied It was very heart-warming to hear from so many patrons that they felt our 2017-2018 Season was the greatest series of programs in Lied Center history. Leading the historic year was Firebird, performed by American Ballet Theatre and the St. Louis Symphony. The Lied Center for Performing Arts at the University of Nebraska−Lincoln was the only place in the world to bring these two iconic artistic institutions together for this ultimate collaboration, featuring Misty Copeland. The Saturday night performance brought the audience to their feet with a standing ovation after every single American Ballet Theatre dance. Firebird was not the only highlight this season. The year kicked off with the ASCAP Musical Theatre Workshop featuring Stephen Bray, composer and co-lyricist of The Color Purple. It was the perfect prelude to hosting the first national tour of the Tony Award®-winning revival of The Color Purple in April 2018. The Lied Center featured new commissioned works by both Philip Glass and Danny Elfman, including the Glass world premiere of “Annunciation.” Other highlights for the season are too numerous to mention, but here are just a few: Kristin Chenoweth and Audra McDonald gave unforgettable performances; Trevor Noah delivered one of the most thoughtful comedy nights in memory and spent nearly an hour with University students following the show; Straight No Chaser presented one of the best holiday shows in Lied history; The Sound of Music thrilled patrons with a fresh new production; the Lied debut of the legendary Manhattan Transfer; Nebraska Repertory Theatre made a dramatic return to the stage as the theater company “in-residence” of the Lied Center; blockbuster Broadway hit Jersey Boys performed to a sold-out crowd; Wu Man and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago were breathtaking; Kinky Boots, jazz super group Snarky Puppy, the Lied’s Piano Series celebration of Van Cliburn with three Gold Medalists performing in one season, Berlin Philharmonic Piano Quartet, Let It Be, Amazing Grace and The Illusionists all delivered exceptional performances. Overall, it was a season all of us will always treasure. Lied Education produced a record number of outreach programs, touching the lives of thousands of young people across the state through Artists-in-Residence and Arts Across Nebraska programs. Students at the University of Nebraska−Lincoln interacted with or were taught by Misty Copeland, Trevor Noah, Kristin Chenoweth, Steven Bray, Wu Man, Arturo Sandoval, Snarky Puppy, Philip Glass, Danny Elfman, principal players of the St. Louis Symphony, Olga Kern and Audra McDonald. On the financial side of the 2017-2018 Season, the amount of patron support is a reflection of enthusiastic appreciation for the programs featured at the Lied Center. We grew to a record number of Friends of Lied members, contributions and gross ticket sales. Our Circles of Giving program played a major role in bringing programs to Nebraska. Because of the Lied’s amazing supporters, the incredible achievements of talented and dedicated staff and our world-class artistic programming, the Lied Center ranks as one of the top 100 theaters in the world. (Pollstar—July 2018) As we celebrate this past year, I invite you to envision the future of the Lied Center and join me in ensuring the legacy of Nebraska’s performing arts center. As an almost-30-year-old venue, the Lied looks forward to partnering with the community to update our facility for upcoming generations. Children and young people of Nebraska deserve to have the same Lied Center experience we have enjoyed for several generations. Together, we can leave the ultimate artistic legacy for Nebraska. Thank you for making the Lied Center such an amazing Nebraska institution. Warmest regards, Best,

Bill Stephan, CFE Executive Director

American Ballet Theatre and the St. Louis Symphony come together for monumental collaboration. One of the world’s greatest dance companies, American Ballet Theatre (ABT), united with the seven-time GRAMMY® Award-winning St. Louis Symphony in February 2018, at the University of Nebraska’s Lied Center for Performing Arts. The collaboration featured a once-in-a-lifetime performance of Igor Stravinsky’s masterwork: Firebird with Principal Dancers Misty Copeland and Christine Shevchenko illuminating the iconic Firebird role on Friday and Saturday nights.

“ The American Ballet Theatre and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra wowed a full house at the Lied Center for Performing Arts on Friday with an evening of world-class dance and music with The Firebird.”

ABT Master Class

The Lied Center for Performing Arts at the University of Nebraska−Lincoln has become a national leader in presenting artists and collaborations normally seen only in the country’s major metropolitan centers, such as New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Lincoln, Nebraska, was the only city in the world to host this artistic collaboration.

– Lincoln Journal Star The performances included Firebird and Serenade after Plato’s Symposium by internationally celebrated choreographer Alexei Ratmansky, complemented by two classic and iconic Black Swan and White Swan pas de deux. Ratmansky served as Artistic Director of the Bolshoi Ballet prior to becoming Artist in Residence at ABT in 2009.

COMMAND PERFORMANCE The Glenn Korff Estate made the most celebrated event in the history of the Lied Center a reality. A new gift created the opportunity for a historic collaboration between American Ballet Theatre and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra as a GK Platinum Command Performance. The gift also provides a $500,000 community challenge grant to build an endowment fund supporting the presentation of iconic artists for future generations at the Lied Center. American Ballet Theatre and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, two of the world’s most highly acclaimed artistic organizations, joined forces on the Lied Center stage to present Firebird. Principal Dancer Misty Copeland, one of the most well-known dancers in the world today, made her Nebraska debut on February 16 in this ballet masterwork choreographed by ABT Artist in Residence Alexei Ratmansky. Lincoln, NE joined New York, Chicago and Washington, D.C. as a place where patrons can witness this epitome of artistic excellence. Beyond the stage, this monumental collaboration provided countless life-changing opportunities for students and Nebraskans of all ages, further amplifying the impact of this exceptional gift. 7

Glenn Korff Legacy Glenn Korff’s remarkable generosity has helped establish the Lied Center as one of the top performing arts centers in the world. Born in Hebron, NE, in 1943, Korff graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1965 and went on to have a successful career in finance. His legacy continues to enrich the human spirit through the arts and we are honored to forever recognize his contributions to the University of Nebraska and Lied Center for Performing Arts.

This monumental partnership provided countless life-changing opportunities for students through extensive educational residencies with artists from ABT and the St. Louis Symphony Hundreds of students and community members attended or participated in the many events surrounding the American Ballet Theatre/St. Louis Symphony event. American Ballet Theatre held dance master classes and open rehearsals where students were able to study with Misty Copeland’s teacher! St. Louis Symphony held separate master classes with students, focusing on viola, violin, cello, bass, trombone, percussion and flute. Members of St. Louis Symphony also visited graduate and undergraduate student convocations. This monumental partnership provided countless life-changing opportunities for students through extensive educational residencies with artists from ABT and the St. Louis Symphony throughout the week leading up to the performance. University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Ronnie Green said, “Engaging with artists like American Ballet Theatre and St. Louis Symphony is part of what makes the student experience on our campus distinctive. Throughout every academic year the most distinguished artists in the world teach in our classrooms and inspire our students.”

VENUE UPDATES

& OUTLOOK The Lied Center is in a constant state of upkeep to ensure we maintain our world-class venue properly. During the 2017-2018 Season, carpet was repaired and updated in high-traffic common areas, including the grand staircases; the orchestra shell ceilings were reinforced to make them more stable and were re-covered; sidewalks on the southeast side of the Lied were replaced; several exit signs and many emergency lighting units were added for compliancy; pit lift machinery/pumps/hydraulic cylinders were updated; hot water recirculation pumps were replaced; the Lied Center began the complete replacement of all fire alarm system wiring and all detection/ alarm devices; and we achieved a better balance on the main hall HVAC for less negative air pressure in the building.

9

With a critical shortage of office space, most employees are required to creatively share small areas. The facility staff remodeled a former coatroom on the orchestra lobby level this year to provide space for parttime staff and student workers. During the summer of 2018, the almost $400,000 renovation of the Lied’s 2,200-seat main hall was completed. Lied Center staff partnered with contract labor and Irwin Seating to renovate the 28-year-old seats with new fabric, seat pans, backs and cushions. Reconditioning the seats rather than replacing them saved the Lied Center over $1 million. The seat renovation was made possible by the Lancaster County Visitors Improvement Fund, Rogers Foundation, Friends of Lied and the HixsonLied Endowment. The fabric matches that of the original seats, maintaining the beauty of the Lied theater with its rich, red aesthetic. The cushions are 4 inches thick and provide more seat support than the seats in the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City.

Science of Sound Camp

Lincoln children participated in a two-day camp that taught the science of sound. The workshops invited 40 children to explore how musical instruments are created, how they make pitch and the physics behind what creates sound. They also learned about rhythm as a division of time. By the end of the camp, the students had created their own musical instruments out of recycled materials, learned to play songs on their instruments and participated in a public performance with their instruments. The program was led by a Kennedy Center teaching artist and featured Nebraska guitarist Daniel Martinez.

Teaching Workshops

The Lied provides workshops for teachers on integrating the
arts into classroom curriculum annually. These workshops affect countless students in a variety of subject matters, anchoring the performing arts as central to a well-rounded education.

Black Violin

The classically trained violin-viola duo Black Violin, who combine classical music and hip-hop, performed Tuesday, November 14, 2017, at the Lied Center for Performing Arts to an energetic and packed audience. Black Violin, a duo of Wilner Baptiste and Kevin Sylvester, was originally scheduled to perform at the Lied Center in early September, but had to reschedule due to family emergencies back in their home state of Florida during Hurricane Irma. The event was free as part of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Arts for All program.

FRIENDS OF LIED Over 1,100 people join together as contributors of the Friends of Lied to support bringing the greatest artists in the world to Nebraska. Friends of Lied members are represented by a vibrant board of directors that manage membership campaigns and fundraisers. The Friends of Lied continues to have record numbers of members and contributions. From annual membership drives and fundraisers, support from the Friends of Lied allows the Lied Center to continue to grow and present more of the greatest artists in the world, right here in our Nebraska community. The Friends of Lied hosted three pre-performance dinners before The B-52s, Motown: The Musical and Kinky Boots. These dinners provided a great way for audience members to get an introduction to the performance and the Lied Center! On May 29, 2018, during the Audra McDonald concert, the Friends presented Lied Executive Director Bill Stephan and Artistic Director Ann Chang with a check for $425,000 representing the annual gift made possible by the contributions of over 1,100 Friends of Lied members. This gift was used to support performances and education programs at the Lied, the Arts Across Nebraska program, which shares Lied performances with communities across the state and venue operating costs.
