ANNUAL REPORT 2010-2011
ARTS ACROSS NEBRASKA The Lied Center’s Arts Across Nebraska program (AAN) was set up to provide access to high quality artists for audiences across the state. Working closely with partner venues in greater Nebraska, the Lied Center offers affordable tours with excellent and varied artists. The Arts Across Nebraska program is a major pillar of the Lied Center’s statewide mission: “Provide audiences across the state with access to ahigh quality artists.”.
SPOTLIGHT: Many Moccasins Fall 2010 Tour 796 students from 11 schools across the state attended 24 workshops on Native American dance, music, history, and culture led by members of the Many Moccasins Dance Troupe. The Lied Center conducted benchmark and follow up surveys with participating students. From the results, we learned that: •Before the workshops, 75% of participating students had some, little, or no experience with other cultures
•Only 47% had seen or participated in dance, music, or theater •19% had no interest in the performing arts •After the workshops, 95% of students were more interested in learning about Native American and other cultures •91% of students were more interested in the performing arts 422 students participated in performing arts for the first time Other artists in our Arts Across Nebraska season included pianist Ann Chang and fiddler/step dancer April Verch and her band. The total number of participants in the Arts Across Nebraska program in 2010-11 was approximately 6,886 (more than 5 times the number of participants in 2009-10).
IAS
The Lied’s collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Arts Symposium (IAS) brought to the stage four amazing performances of arts, dance and theater. The IAS’s mission is to place the performing arts in a broader and more meaningful context, and to bring world class artists and scholars to Lincoln. In 2010-11, over 2,600 students, professors, and members of the community attended IAS events, such as workshops, lectures, discussions and performances. In September 2010, Time Lapse Dance delivered a public performance and a school matinee at Goodrich Middle School, and Artistic Director Jody Sperling gave a public lecture and a master class for UNL dance students. The main stage performance showcased visual-kinetic theatre that fused experimental dance, circus arts and mesmerizing fabric-andlight spectacles that delighted audiences of all ages. Heidi Latsky’s dance company GIMP amazed audiences with a thought-provoking performance featuring people with physical challenges, including a prelude with local community members. The dance troupe performed, taught and lectured over a four day period in Lincoln. Over a dozen groups were offered free tickets to the event including Nebraska Veterans, the League of Human Dignity and Assistive Technology Partnership. Fourteen community members, including young aspiring dancers and clients at Madonna ProActive with physical challenges, rehearsed and performed the prelude to GIMP as part of the main performance at the Lied Center. French visual and performance artist ORLAN interacted with 500 UNL students, faculty and members of the Lincoln community through seminars, lectures and discussions. The Lied Center and the Interdisciplinary Arts Symposium won a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for these activities, including the Lied-sponsored performance by AXIS Dance, a physically integrated company.

CREATIVE CAMPUS PROJECT The Community Collaborative Academy provided performing and visual arts workshops to students from Clinton and Hartley Elementary Community Learning Centers and the Clyde Malone Community Center for African American families. Community collaborators included local Teaching Artists, representatives from Clinton and Hartley Elementary schools, Clyde Malone Community Center, Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, Nebraska Educational Telecommunications, the dance department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Lincoln Arts Council. In addition to the workshops, the project provided an artist encounter with AXIS Dance, a physically integrated dance group, and an unforgettable assembly performance at Clinton Elementary School. The project implemented highlevels of creative learning, including key concepts of visual arts, dance, movement, and music. UNL student interns at Nebraska Educational Telecommunications complied a short documentary and instructional video about the project.
STUDIO FOR STUDENTS Studio for Students is a rotating art exhibit at the Lied Center for Performing Arts, displaying the work of students in grades K-12 from across Nebraska. The purpose of this program is to recognize and encourage students’ commitment to the arts, to provide students the opportunity to display their work in a gallery setting, and to increase understanding and appreciation of the arts in the community. The participants of Studio for Students can hold a reception so that their friends and family can admire their artwork; the display is also open for walk-ins during office hours.
LIED MUSIC GENERATION The Lied Music Generation works with LPS Middle Schools to provide music mentorship and performance experience. 12 UNL mentors from the School of Music worked with 30 students from Lefler, Mickle and Goodrich Middle Schools in private and small group sessions. An end-of-year dinner for participants and their families celebrated the project’s achievements.
PRE-TALKS The AdventureLied program offers a pre-
performance talk open to all ticket holders before most main stage performances. A guest speaker from the Lincoln community offers professional and personal insight on the evening’s performance. The talks are held in the Steinhart Room and begin one half hour before Lied Main Stage events.
PERFORMANCE FUND
AdventureLied’s Performance Fund program is a wonderful way to bring Lincoln and surrounding areas to the Lied Center. Through generous contributions, the Lied Center is able to provide tickets, free of charge, to children and students who would not otherwise be able to attend. Through this program we are able to open a child’s eyes to the performing arts. Tickets are assigned on a first come first served basis to underserved children and young people. The Lied Center was happy to donate 3,018 tickets to a large number of organizations in the state in 2010-11.
INTERNSHIP PROGRAM The Lied Center offers educational internships in a many of its departments. Internships are typically for one year, and are open to students and non-students.

STUDENT COUNCIL The Lied Center founded its Student Council in the fall of 2009 with members from across campus. The council provides student input into programming, and assists the Lied Center in spreading the word about its activities to other UNL students. Members include one Graduate and one Undergraduate student from each UNL College, as well as representatives from OASIS, the Residence Hall Association, ASUN, UPC, and the Jeffrey S. Raikes School. In the 2010-11 season, the Lied Student Council established Lied dedicated bulletin boards in key locations, such as Westbrook, Temple and Nebraska Union to promote Lied activities.
