See How Nebraska Is Doing It Right: THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA’S FIVE-YEAR STRATEGY

This February, the president of the University of Nebraska system, Ted Carter, gathered a diverse team of students, faculty, staff, and administrators to help chart our path forward. The goal: to lay out a vision for what the future should look like for the University of Nebraska. From that work has emerged a five-year strategy for growth and success.

Charting Our Course In Unprecedented Times Our five-year strategy is built around the belief that higher education is as valuable today as it was when our university was founded in 1869. It articulates priorities that are highly relevant in today’s environment—and will be critical in defining the future of higher education in Nebraska.

WELCOME FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR No matter how you look at it, the 2020-2021 season is going to be unlike any other in the Lied Center’s 30-year history. We face unprecedented challenges, but there is also so much reason for hope and optimism. The arts bring joy and inspiration into our lives, and we need that now more than ever. Regardless of the circumstances, the Lied Center is committed to fulfilling our mission to educate, inspire and entertain the people of Nebraska. It’s difficult to overstate the effects of COVID-19 on the arts industry. I would like to express my deep appreciation to all the individuals and corporations who have maintained their donations and support during this time, and extend a special thanks to those who have increased their gifts. While the theater was dark, our entire team worked tirelessly to welcome audiences back to the Lied in the safest way possible. We have designed a new socially distanced seating map, invested in state-of-the-art disinfecting products and upgraded our air filters. Our restrooms are now completely touchless, and masks are required at all times inside the building. In addition, we have adopted the most flexible ticketing policy in our history, allowing free refunds or exchanges on all tickets right up until showtime. We want you to return to the Lied Center with the confidence that your health and safety are our top priority. At the same time, we realize that not all audiences will be able to join us in person yet, and we will continue to bring you top-notch online programming as well. We will bring the arts to you. But here’s the best part – when the curtain rises on each show, you won’t be thinking about masks, social distancing or disinfectant. For 90 minutes or so, you get to escape. Studies show that during live performances, the heartbeats of people in the audience actually synch up; in this time of isolation, how beautiful will it be for our hearts to beat as one? I’m so excited to see you back at the Lied!

Sincerely, Bill Stephan, CVE Executive Director & Chief Artistic Officer, Lied Center for Performing Arts

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

We acknowledge that the University of Nebraska, with the Lied Center for Performing Arts, is a land-grant institution with campuses and programs on the past, present, and future homelands of the Pawnee, Usni Ponca, Juwere and Nutachi, Umonhon (or Omaha), Dakota, Lakota, Hinono’eino, Kaw, and Tsitsistas and So’taahe Peoples, as well as those of the relocated Ho-Chunk, Nemahahaki, and Báxoje Peoples. We acknowledge that this land where the Lied Center currently sits, before it was part of the university, before it was part of the Nebraska State Fairgrounds, was a site of salt gathering and a shared resource of many of the peoples just named. The Lied Center is committed to continuing the practice of gathering and sharing with indigenous people and others. We acknowledge that our coming together here does not usurp or counter any past, present, or future claims of Native peoples also to this space and that it behooves us to know whose lands we are about to temporarily share. - Adapted from a document created in conversation with UNL Native Studies, the Institute of Ethnic Studies, UNITE, and others. For more information, contact Dr. Margaret Huettl (mhuettl2@unl.edu).

Land acknowledgments are formal statements that recognize and honor Indigenous Peoples and their ongoing relationships with the land on which we live, learn and work. They demonstrate respect for Native people and their histories, they counter the erasure of Indigenous Peoples' histories and cultures, and they voice the truth about Native American history and the present=. Land acknowledgments are an essential part of building and maintaining good relationships with Native communities. Offering a land acknowledgment should inspire not only awareness but also relationships and action. A land acknowledgment is not the same as a welcome or blessing by a local elder or other Native representative. In addition to this Land Acknowledgment, the Lied Center will, from time to time, invite special guests to offer a Welcome or Blessing at an upcoming performance and/or activity that takes place in our venue and on our campus.

HIXSON–LIED LEGACY "THE LIED CENTER’S MOST IMPORTANT ROLE IS TO INTRODUCE INDIVIDUALS FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE AND CULTURAL BACKGROUNDS TO ENRICHING AND DIVERSE PERFORMING ARTS EXPERIENCES." – Christina Hixson Ernst F. Lied and Christina Hixson have transformed the lives of millions of Americans through the Lied Foundation Trust with philanthropic contributions of more than $300 million to over 125 different organizations in seven states. Born in 1906, Ernst F. Lied was a 1927 graduate of the University of Nebraska. He achieved business success as the owner of a Buick dealership in Omaha and as a real estate magnate in Las Vegas. Having no living relatives, he established a trust in 1972, and upon his death in 1980, his secretary and business partner Christina Hixson was appointed to administer the foundation. The first gift from the Lied Foundation Trust was a $10 million matching grant to build the Lied Center for Performing Arts in the early 1980s at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in memory of Lied’s parents, Ernst M. and Ida K. Lied. The Lied Foundation Trust went on to support many projects in Nebraska, including Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo Lied Jungle, the Lied Lodge in Nebraska City and the Lied Transplant Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Christina Hixson first partnered with Lied in 1944 as his secretary at the Omaha Buick dealership, and she followed him to Las Vegas as a business partner in 1960. After Lied’s death, Hixson became the executrix of his estate and continues to serve as the Lied Foundation’s sole trustee. It was Hixson who made the decision to support the construction of the Lied Center for Performing Arts. In 2000, she also announced a gift of $18 million to support UNL’s Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. One of the last major gifts of the Lied Foundation Trust was a $2.5 million grant for the construction of the Lied Center’s new multipurpose space, the Lied Commons, which opened in 2012. Together, Lied and Hixson built a multimillion-dollar empire that has positively impacted the lives of millions of people in Nebraska and across the nation.

A NOTE FROM COMMUNITY LIEDERS “ We rely on the Lied Center to bring us the best artists in the world, with performances that help us to recognize universal truths and our shared humanity. While the pandemic has kept us from this affirming communal experience, it has reaffirmed the healing value of the arts in all our lives. Thank you to our Lied Center for creating new ways to safely connect us with the arts for our entertainment, inspiration, and well-being.” – LEIRION GAYLOR BAIRD | LINCOLN MAYOR

“ It takes grit to become someone who can achieve the glory of captivating audiences on the Lied Center stage. We’re proud that the Lied Center is part of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and that it connects students, faculty and staff to a world of ideas and arts experiences that inspire us to work toward our own personal glory.” – RONNIE GREEN | UNL CHANCELLOR

“ The value of higher education extends beyond the degrees students leave with and the research that changes so many lives. The arts—and their associated community outreach and education—better our quality of life, create social bonds, and help us to think more broadly about the human experience. The arts connect us, and the Lied Center is at the heart of this work.” – TED CARTER | UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA PRESIDENT

"Union Bank has been a proud supporter of the Lied Center for the Performing Arts since its inception. I've had the privilege of attending a wide variety of programming, and I leave each performance feeling uplifted. When COVID-19 hit, this ritual was brought to an abrupt end. Although the Lied Center has done a marvelous job of bringing performances online, there's nothing that can replace the experience of watching a live performance. Sometimes we fail to appreciate what we have until it's no longer available. This absence of live performances has reinforced just how important they are. From the moment you take your seat, there's a feeling of anticipation. What will this performance be like? Will I enjoy it? Will I learn from it? The scenery and props set the stage, while the acting and singing make the experience all-encompassing. You feel drawn into the experience and a part of that performance, even though you're just a spectator. That is the magic of performance. That is the magic of the Lied Center. Indeed, we're privileged to have the Lied Center, and it needs our support now more than ever. Please be generous if you have the means, so that the Lied Center may emerge from these difficult times stronger than ever." – ANGIE MUHLEISEN | PRESIDENT & CEO, UNION BANK & TRUST "As a lifelong resident of this great city, I have had the good fortune of experiencing the magic that happens inside the Lied Center on many occasions. The performing arts enrich our lives in so many ways. They have the capacity to appeal to us emotionally and intellectually while expanding our horizons and habits of thought. The Lied Center attracts the finest performing artists in the world and provides the residents of Nebraska with profound opportunities to experience the arts. Farmers Mutual of Nebraska is a proud supporter of the Lied Center and the wonderful contribution that it makes to the quality of life we enjoy here in Nebraska." – MARK WALZ | CHAIRMAN, PRESIDENT & CEO, FARMERS MUTUAL OF NEBRASKA

" Fulfilling life is what we do every day at Ameritas. We support the performing arts because it enriches lives—and our community—by creating opportunities to enjoy life at its very best. This is why we are so proud to sponsor Lied Center performances." – BRENT KORTE | SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT CHIEF MARKETING OFFICER, AMERITAS

" Experiencing a live performance engages us in a wide range of emotions. Laughter, tears, excitement, cheering for the underdog, exhilaration and so many more. We feel more alive. As a member of the Friends of Lied, I am an active participant in supporting the performances that allow me to experience all of these emotions. My membership contributes to the excitement of a class of fourth graders who come to the Lied for the first time, the opportunity for families across Nebraska to see a live theater performance in their hometown, the ability for college students to learn directly from internationally known artists in master classes and the experience of being part of bringing world-class performances to the Lied Center for Performing Arts. If you are a member of the Friends of Lied, thank you. If you have not yet joined, we would welcome your participation at whatever level you are comfortable. You can find more information at www.liedcenter.org/friendsoflied." – JUNE PEDERSON | PRESIDENT, FRIENDS OF LIED BOARD OF DIRECTORS

“Over thirty years ago University of Nebraska leaders, leaders from the University of Nebraska Foundation, a group of business leaders and individuals from across the state had a vision of establishing a world-class performing arts center. With the initial and ongoing support of these visionaries the Lied Center became a reality and changed the landscape of the performing arts in our state. I’m proud that Assurity Life and our predecessor companies have supported the Lied Center from its beginning.” – TOM HENNING | CHAIRMAN, PRESIDENT & CEO, ASSURITY

" FNBO is committed to contributing to the strength of our communities, and one measure of a successful community is its vibrant and robust culture. By supporting organizations that expose individuals to the arts, cultures, humanities and athletics, we are investing in the future of our city and what it cares about. FNBO is proud to continue our tradition of partnership with the Lied Center, and we support their dedication to bringing world-class entertainment to the Lincoln area.” – NATHAN S. MCKOWN | SENIOR DIRECTOR, COMMERCIAL BANKING GROUP, CITY AMBASSADOR – LINCOLN

THE PHANTOM MAKES A LASTING IMPACT IN LINCOLN “ The Phantom of the Opera was the largest production in the Lied

Center’s history, with the most performances we’ve ever had of any artistic event (16), including one performance exclusively for students. Over 2,000 kids got to see the show. It’s also the biggest production, with 20 semi-trucks needed to bring it all in, and the largest number of people to ever see a show at the Lied Center—over 28,000.” – Lied Center Executive Director Bill Stephan

When The Phantom of the Opera opened at the Lied Center in October of 2019, it was truly a historic moment for the artistic landscape of Lincoln. Even the building itself will never be the same.

Phantom of the Opera was the marquee production of the Lied's 30th Anniversary Season! Photo credit Justin Mohling.

Enhancements allowing for larger sets, heavier equipment and other upgrades made Phantom possible, but will also open up possibilities for countless other productions to take the Lied Center stage. Stephan said, “We rebuilt the entire front section of the fly loft because the Phantom set was too big and too tall to clear the previous design of our light bridge. Now we can have sets positioned closer to the front of the stage. This is going to provide a more interactive experience because there will be even less distance between the audience and the performers. The investments made will allow the Lied to offer an enhanced experience to audiences for years to come.”

402.472.4747

Beyond thrilling nearly 30,000 patrons, the artists of The Phantom of the Opera also spent time with dozens of local students through vocal and dance master classes at the Lied Center. Derrick Davis, who starred as The Phantom, said, “It’s so vital that the Lied Center can make things like this happen because if the students don’t see working performers, it makes it more challenging to step out into the real world. So when you open the doors this way for people to come in and do what I get to do with these students, you change lives in a great way.” That was exactly what happened for Kevin Pynes, a student at Lincoln Pius X who participated in a master class with The Phantom of the Opera dance captains. “It really gets kids like me inspired. I’ve been thinking of a musical theater career, and this made me believe that might actually be possible.” For the thousands of students who got to see The Phantom of the Opera as audience members, the dozens who got to learn from the artists and the tens of thousands of patrons who were part of the magic of the show in the Lied Center, it was an experience that won’t soon be forgotten.

Derrick Davis works with UNL Glenn Korff School of Music students in a vocal master class.

“The Lied Center for Performing Arts is an important partner to the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, providing our students, faculty, staff and the greater community with the opportunity to experience world-class performances each season. We are grateful for the support of Miss Christina Hixson and the Lied Foundation Trust for their vision to create this important cultural center for Nebraska and their creation of the Hixson-Lied Endowment, which helps support master classes for our students. The opportunity to interact with the best artists in the world allows them to see the hard work and preparation they need to do to reach that pinnacle level of achievement and would not be possible without that support.” – CHARLES O’CONNOR | ENDOWED DEAN, HIXSON-LIED COLLEGE OF FINE AND PERFORMING ART LIEDCENTER.ORG

"THE LIED CENTER TAKES THE WORLD AND PUTS IT ON ONE STAGE." –YO-YO MA

2020-2021 LIED CENTER STATEWIDE ADVISORY BOARD "It is hard to imagine a time when the performing arts are more important than now. Challenged by a pandemic, by political discomfort and by extreme weather events, the performing arts offer us a way to remember who we are and what we are about. They offer us an escape and the inspiration to face whatever lies before us. It’s poignant that the 2019-2020 year was the most successful in the Lied’s history, yet the 2020-2021 season will probably be the most challenging. Reflecting on this I know that success can be counted in terms of tickets sold and donations received, but real success is measured in the resilient, capable, caring and dedicated organization that the Lied has created and in the community of engaged patrons from all parts of Nebraska. Being asked to head the Lied Center Statewide Advisory Board is an incredible honor and a special duty. In accepting this role, I am awed by the Lied’s mission to entertain, inspire and educate, not just in the beautiful building in Lincoln, but also by bringing performing arts to every corner of our state. Whether you are a rancher near Scottsbluff, a farmer near Valentine, a resident of a small town or of one of our cities, the Lied is there for you. It is a gift from the many individuals and organizations who donate time and funds to make this center something extraordinary. Imagine, we have one of the top 100 performing arts centers in the world. Thank you for your support and your commitment. There is no place like the Lied. And it’s in Nebraska." – ART ZYGIELBAUM | PRESIDENT, LIED CENTER STATEWIDE ADVISORY BOARD

PROGRAM NOTES Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 27, No. 2 – “Moonlight” Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)

As one of the most well-known pieces in all of classical music, with a famous nickname to boot, Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 14, it may surprise some listeners to learn, was not always referred to as “Moonlight.” In fact, the composer himself never even heard it called by the moniker! Upon its completion in 1801, Beethoven marked the work “Quasi una fantasia,” meaning “In the manner of a fantasy.” The improvisatory feel and departure from established structures this title implies were quite characteristic of this period in Beethoven’s output. It wasn’t until 1832 – five years after the composer’s death – that German music critic Ludwig Rellstab published a review in which he stated the sonata’s opening movement summoned for him “a vision of a boat on Lake Lucerne by moonlight.” This description worked its way into public consciousness, the name stuck, and nocturnal imagery is today invariably associated with the Moonlight Sonata. Listeners will undoubtedly be familiar with the famed first movement. Played quietly throughout, the work opens with tolling octaves in the left hand accompanied by steady triplet figurations in the right. The ensuing melody sounds a sighing lament, its seamless placidity nothing short of hypnotic. This beloved movement proved very popular even during Beethoven’s lifetime. Indeed, it was so sought after that the composer reportedly grew irritated with its fame and is quoted as remarking to his student Carl Czerny, “Surely I’ve written better things.” The second movement Allegretto is a brief, delicate scherzo imbued with syncopation. It is written in the major mode and has an easy and charming character. Indeed, Franz Liszt is said to have designated the movement “a flower between two chasms.” The concluding Presto effectively illustrates Beethoven’s departure from contemporary conventions; it is this movement rather than the first that takes on a sonata form, concentrating the musical weight and substance at the end of the work rather than the expected beginning. If the opening movement is a quiet moonlit lake, then this concluding number is a dark and storm-ravaged sea. Full of fiery agitation and tempestuous drama, it is far more technically demanding than the preceding movements, requiring a performer of great skill and stamina to realize.

PROGRAM NOTES Variations on a Theme of Corelli, Op. 42 Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943)

It was in the summer of 1931 that Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff penned his final work for solo piano, Variations on a Theme of Corelli. The work’s title is somewhat misleading; while it is based on a theme that was at the time attributed to Baroque Italian composer Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713), it is in fact a traditional Iberian folk melody known as La Folia that is so old it has no precise known origin. Rachmaninoff became familiar with the theme through Corelli’s Sonata for Violin and Continuo, Op. 5 No. 12. Nor was he the only composer to draw from this work: Such noted composers as Handel, Vivaldi, Bach and Liszt also used the theme in compositions of their own. Composed of a statement of the theme followed by 20 variations, the Corelli Variations clocks in at just about 19 minutes in length, making it quite compact compared with other forays Rachmaninoff made into the genre. The work is organized almost as though it were a sonata with three “movements”: variations 1-13 make up the first, variations 14-15 the second, and variations 16-20 bring the work to a close, followed only by a brief coda. However, where sonatas tend to journey through multiple moods, these variations instead inhabit a rather narrow emotional space; the set is, in a few words, deeply sad. Rachmaninoff begins with a stark statement of the theme; bare and austere, it sets the tone for the work as a whole. As the first “movement” begins, the theme’s character is left largely intact. The melody remains recognizable, the harmonies do not stray too far from what is expected, and the rhythms stay true. This pattern gradually shifts, however. It becomes increasingly difficult to trace the theme’s origins as a heavy use of chromaticism, convulsive metric upheavals and jarring harmonic movements imbue the work, all underscored by a driving forward motion. An intermezzo provides a brief pause, improvisatory in nature and featuring dazzling runs and rolled chords. Variation 14 presents another fairly straightforward statement of the theme, this time in the major mode and filled with decadent harmonies, while 15 is sweetly lyrical. These two variations offer a welcome respite to the drive and bite of the surrounding “movements.”

PROGRAM NOTES

With variation 16 comes a sudden shift back to minor modes and vigorous rhythms. Each passage is increasingly unsettled, energetic and frenzied, reaching an unmistakable climax in the fever-pitch of variation 20. A quiet coda brings the work to its close, unfolding in a mysterious, hazily chromatic melody that concludes with several tolling D minor chords.

Pictures at an Exhibition

Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) Modest Mussorgsky met artist and architect Viktor Hartmann sometime in the early 1860s, probably in the home of the influential Russian critic Vladimir Stasov. The two men (along with Stasov) were nationalists devoted to the creation of fundamentally Russian art; as such, they became fast friends. When Hartmann died suddenly from an aneurysm in August 1873 at just 39 years of age, Mussorgsky, by all accounts, became deeply depressed. It was Stasov who organized the memorial exhibition that would become the basis for Mussorgsky’s famed piano suite, Pictures at an Exhibition. Held in St. Petersburg February-March 1874, the show displayed over 400 of Hartmann’s drawings, paintings and architectural sketches. Mussorgsky attended the show in person and, inspired by 10 works in particular, composed Pictures at an Exhibition over a period of just three weeks in June of that year. Notable for its brilliant imagery and wide atmospheric range, the work has since become a popular showpiece for virtuoso pianists. It has also received many orchestral arrangements over the years, the most famous the 1922 version by Maurice Ravel. Pictures at an Exhibition depicts Mussorgsky’s personal tour of the titular exhibition; each of the 10 movements musically represents an individual work by Hartmann, while the Promenade opening theme and interludes suggest the composer “roving through the exhibition, now leisurely, now briskly in order to come close to a picture that had attracted his attention, and at times sadly, thinking of his departed friend.” Today most of the works featured at the exhibition are lost, so while a few have been assuredly identified as those that prompted Mussorgsky’s imaginative musical imagery, it is impossible to know exactly what each picture looked like. Luckily, Stasov penned commentary (included here in quotes) that offers modern audiences visualizations of each artistic work to accompany the music:

// PIANO CIRCLE STORIES \\ We asked our generous Piano Circle sponsors to tell us why they chose to support this project. Here is what they said... MARY-ANN K. CLINTON: My late husband (John) and I have loved music all our lives. However, our passion for classical piano started in 1967 when we learned that our 4-year-old son, Mark, had extraordinary musical talent. From that time, we dedicated our efforts to help him develop his God-given talents. We recently discovered that Mark’s paternal grandmother was such an accomplished pianist that she had been awarded a music scholarship to attend Boston University in the 1930s. Due to family reasons, she never fulfilled that dream. This made us realize that although God works in wonderful and mysterious ways, family genes may also have been involved. Following our move to Lincoln, John and I soon found a home for all things musical and cultural at the Lied Center. The growth of the Lied Piano Circle allowed us to contribute to having some of the best piano music in the world on the Lied stage. Our musical journey has been wonderful one, and my continued participation in the Piano Circle is an honor and privilege. I look forward to this year’s Piano Circle artists as they provide another season of exciting performances for our Nebraska audiences. ANABETH H. COX: As the only member of the Piano Circle without a history on the piano, I must admit that my love of piano performance comes as a result of my sister, MarySue Harris. Her love of the piano, her 40 plus years of teaching piano, and her joy in the performance on the piano, have sealed my commitment to perpetuating that love for the children, and the children at heart, in the beauty of the music written for the piano. I’m grateful to be a part of bringing that beauty to the Lincoln community. I can’t play the piano, but I can love it! MARYSUE HARRIS: The Piano Series, offered by the Lied Center, is truly an opportunity to hear first-rate piano performances throughout the year! Before the Piano Series, we had some poor attendance at piano concerts, but there is so much interest now, both in the Series and in the active response to the pianists, it is most gratifying and fulfilling!! There is an increased awareness of the excellent pianism and an expectation from the audience of a higher standard of performance overall! As a lifelong, performing pianist who taught piano for over 40 years and had many students win top honors in competitions, I am so thrilled with the resounding success of the Piano Series; and I look forward to another outstanding year with the powerful pianistic performances the series offers. MarySue has moved to the West Coast to be close to her son and daughter.

// PIANO CIRCLE STORIES \\ KEITH HECKMAN & JANET DANIELSON: We are grateful for the opportunity to be members of the Piano Circle. Both of us have spent our entire lives associated with pianos, Janet as a performer and Keith as a piano dealer. It gives us great satisfaction to help bring world-class musicians to Lincoln and also provide music outreach support for the many fine young pianists in the area. CHARLOTTE HEERMANN: The Piano Series initially featured in the 2013-14 season of the Lied Center has enhanced the season program and promises to continue to do so in the 2020-21 season. Our community has had the special opportunity to experience piano performances of the highest quality presented by internationally acclaimed pianists. The response has been enthusiastic and has raised awareness and expectations of even more outstanding performances. As a performing pianist and teacher for many years, I am particularly excited by the opportunity for students to hear some of the best pianists and performances in the world. What an inspiration! I look forward to another outstanding season with exceptional pianists and performances offered by the Piano Series. MRS. LARRY H. LUSK: The piano and music have played an important part in my life. From my early childhood piano lessons, through high school, college and beyond, there has always been music and especially the piano. Once again, the Lied Piano Series brings beautiful music and outstanding artists to the Lied stage, showcasing the endless variety, creativity and beauty of this grand and glorious instrument. We welcome these artists to the Lied stage for all to enjoy JOAN M. REIST: It’s wonderful that the Piano Series has received such a positive and enthusiastic response, and I’m delighted that is has become a permanent fixture in Lied Center programming. It's especially gratifying that this program continues to reach out to young people, giving them a unique opportunity to hear great music and observe great artists interact with the instrument. In the end, all who enjoy these concerts will walk away with something new and exciting that can enhance their personal - and positive relationship with the piano. I really appreciate continuing efforts to engage interested and enthusiastic piano students beyond the concert hall. The initial Piano Academy was

LARRY & LUCY BUNTAIN COMINE Larry and Lucy are the Lied Center’s newest Season Lieders, joining for the 2020-2021 season. They are definitely not new to the Lied family, however, having been Lied Center supporters and leaders for many years, including being Gold Event sponsors for the past several seasons. Lucy serves as the Lied Center’s Senior Development Director Emerita. She has made a major impact in building the Lied Center’s artistic programs, including the Glenn Korff Broadway Series and the Lied’s Command Performance of American Ballet Theatre with Misty Copeland and the St. Louis Symphony. During her time with the University of Nebraska Foundation, Lucy played a lead role in developing the arts at UNL, including the creation of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film, Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center, Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts and much more. She has a passion for Broadway, dance and a wide variety of art forms. Larry and Lucy enjoy supporting and advocating for Nebraska’s performing arts center, and their positive impact on the Lied will last long into the future.

SEASON LIEDERS PRISCILLA C. GREW

Priscilla Grew is a longtime supporter of the Lied Center because her parents taught her as a child how live performances can change a life. They took her with them to the famous 1949 Goethe Bicentennial Convocation in Aspen, CO, and to a Metropolitan Opera performance of The Marriage of Figaro in San Antonio in 1950. Grew says that she revisits the intense memories of these first live performances every time she attends an event at the Lied Center. Grew and her husband grew up with music—his grandmother was the New York soprano Alma Clayburgh, and hers studied piano in New York and Germany in the 1890s. Her great-grandfather also founded the Croswell Opera House in Adrian, MI, in 1866, one of the oldest continuously operating theaters in the country, and her mother, Evangeline Perkins, was a piano teacher who studied at the Oberlin Conservatory. Grew was also the first member of the Lied Center’s Dance Circle, which supports bringing the world’s top dance companies to the Lied Center. She says, “It is a great honor for me to help start the new Lied Center Dance Circle. No, I never trained as a dancer, became a pianist or an actress, but I support the Lied, so that when the curtain rises, I can join others of all ages and backgrounds in the firsthand artistic experiences that transport us far beyond the horizons of our own individual lives.”

CHUCK & KAREN HARRIS We are pleased to participate in the Lied as Season Lieders for the 2020-21 season. Both lifelong Nebraskans, Karen grew up in Lincoln and graduated from UNL, and Chuck grew up in York and is a University of Minnesota graduate. We have been honored to participate in various Lied organizations, including members of the Lied Center’s 25th Anniversary Sterling Society. Karen served on the Friends of Lied board and served as its president in 2008-2009. She now serves on the Lied Statewide Advisory Board and on the board of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. Chuck served on the Statewide Advisory Board and as its president in 2015-2016. He currently serves on the Chancellors Advisory Board at UNMC. We have enjoyed attending and encouraging friends to enjoy the Lied experience. The Lied’s commitment to making the performing arts experiences available to all through programs like Arts Across Nebraska, master classes by visiting performers and subsidized ticket prices makes the Lied Center the go-to destination for performing arts in Nebraska. We want all Nebraskans to have the amazing opportunity to enjoy all that the Lied Center makes possible.

SEASON LIEDERS VIKKI & DOUG KOTIL The Kotils are both lifelong Nebraskans and longtime supporters of the performing arts, including the Lied Center for Performing Arts. In 1985 Vikki was involved as a member of the then newly formed statewide Lied Center Program Advisory Council. She later joined the staff of the Lied Center Project during the facility’s construction and initial program development. “How exciting it was to personally see the brick and mortar transform into the world-class performing arts facility it is today,” said Vikki. “From the onset, the mission of the Lied Center was to increase the opportunities for all Nebraskans to experience the highest-quality performances and arts events. This is evident today as the Lied Center continues to enhance and enrich the cultural experiences of its patrons.” Doug added, “We feel so fortunate to benefit from the efforts of all those visionaries who made the Lied Center a reality. It is important to both of us to support the arts through the Lied Center’s programs and events, so future generations may also experience the enjoyment you can only obtain from live performances.” The Kotils say, “We’re thrilled to be a part of this season!”

RHONDA SEACREST Few Nebraskans have supported the arts and culture of the state, including the Lied Center for Performing Arts, more than Rhonda Seacrest and her late husband, James C. Seacrest. With their support of the HixsonLied College of Fine and Performing Arts, Sheldon Museum of Art, the Glenn Korff School of Music, Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra, the NET Foundation and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, among others, the Seacrests have gone above and beyond to provide world-class cultural events and education to citizens all across Nebraska. Jointly and individually, the Seacrests have headed fund drives raising millions of dollars and served on the boards of some of Nebraska’s most significant cultural entities. Seacrest puts a high priority on providing quality and equality of cultural experiences for all Nebraskans. “Attending any performance at the Lied Center enhances the cultural awareness of each person,” said Seacrest. “As I am seated in the audience, it is palpable. I can feel it! Patrons exit the Lied Center culturally elevated in a manner that can only be provided in an exceptional venue. And it is happening right here in Lincoln.”

SEASON LIEDERS ART & CHRIS ZYGIELBAUM Great supporters of the Lied Center for many years, Art and Chris Zygielbaum frequently express their great pride in and commitment to Nebraska’s performing arts center. Art is the president-elect for the Lied Center Statewide Advisory Board, and Chris is a former Friends of Lied board member. Art and Chris can be found at the Lied Center for more than 20 performances a year and often choose to support programs that have exceptional artistic merit and social justice impact. In the 2019-2020 season the Zygielbaums were Gold Event sponsors for the play 1984, with the hope that it would educate the community on the importance of freedom and individual liberty. A number of years ago, they supported a youth play from Australia called Hitler’s Daughter that explored issues of Nazi Germany through a fictional plot. This production, in particular, had a significant impact on local youth who were given the opportunity to experience the show. The Zygielbaums also sponsored My Antonia, Trevor Noah, The Capitol Steps and many other memorable and meaningful programs in past seasons. Because of their deep belief in the importance of the Lied Center to our community and state, the Zygielbaums were motivated to increase their level of support this season to help assure a strong recovery from the effects of the pandemic slow down.

LIED CONCERTS MOVE ONLINE & INTO NEIGHBORHOODS

On March 13, 2020, the Lied Center for Performing Arts was supposed to be hosting a full house to enjoy the Neil Diamond tribute band Super Diamond. Instead, that show became the first of dozens of concerts, events and performances to be postponed or canceled at the Lied as the COVID-19related shutdowns began in Lincoln and beyond. As it became clear that things were not going to be business as usual for quite some time, Lied Center staff found themselves needing to think swiftly and creatively to keep providing arts, entertainment and inspiration to the people of Nebraska. The focus quickly turned online. The debut of the Lied Live Online concert series came exactly two weeks after that first postponed event and kicked off with Lincoln blues/soul singer-songwriter Emily Bass. That first concert drew an audience of over 200 live viewers on the Lied Center’s Facebook page. Within days, the concert had been viewed over 10,000 times. In the weeks following Bass' performance, Lied Live Online became a full-fledged concert series, presenting a new artist every weekend. From March through July, 18 live concerts were presented from artists, including Susan Werner, Daniel Martinez, Josh Hoyer, Paul Barnes, Andrea von Kampen, April Verch, Jackie Allen, Hans Sturm, Michael Londra, Juli Burney, Hannah Huston, Nebraska Brass, Jason Michael Webb and more. Lied Live Online featured an eclectic mix of genres, mixing national and international acts into a roster of mostly local artists. Audiences tuned in from Lincoln and far beyond, connecting with artists and enjoying the high-quality entertainment they’ve come to associate with the Lied. As Lied Live Online brought audiences entertainment virtually, the Lied’s Music on the Move took it to the streets. Saturday evenings in June and July, a bicycle-powered stage carrying local artists brought music to neighborhoods all over Lincoln. This mobile summer concert series was hugely popular, drawing socially distanced crowds each weekend as it cruised the streets and invited people to dance on sidewalks and front yards. One special concert brought a live brass quartet to three retirement communities, where residents enjoyed the music from their balconies. Whether online, in the streets or in our beautiful auditorium, the Lied Center remains committed to our mission of providing world-class art to the people of Nebraska and beyond.

THE LIED CENTER'S MISSION OF EDUCATION MOVES ONLINE An important piece of the Lied Center mission is providing top-quality arts education opportunities. When COVID-19 forced the suspension of in-person events beginning in the spring, the Lied education team moved quickly to reimagine how to continue accomplishing that mission. The first order of business was the Lied summer camps. In 2019, 35 high school students had attended the Lied Center’s Triple Threat Broadway Intensive, an opportunity to take voice, dance and acting workshops from Tony Award winner Jason Michael Webb and a staff of professional teaching artists. Another group of students attended the Lied’s Piano Academy, which in 2019 was headed up by international award-winning pianist Sean Chen and in 2020 by acclaimed pianist Eric Zuber. The Lied education team quickly decided that canceling was not an option, and instead they swiftly and creatively recreated the camps in an all-online format. Each day in the 2020 Intensive included small group classes in acting, dancing and voice as well as special sessions on topics, including auditioning, studying musical theater in college and life as a working actor, all conducted via video conferencing. The Piano Academy featured similar small-group and one-on-one instruction from the teaching artists, giving students from Lincoln and far beyond the opportunity to develop their skills from home. Beyond summer camps, the Lied’s education department has also been innovative in offering online content to the community as a whole. Since July, Lied Learning Online has been presenting a new arts education event each week, ranging from musical theater masterclasses for students to creative movement for preschoolers to lunchtime topics for all ages. The Lunch & Learn series is a live video podcast program featuring interviews with arts professionals all over the nation. Tiny Lieders features programming especially for the youngest audiences, providing imagination adventures geared at children under six. Master Classes at the Lied gives students 11-18 years old the opportunity to brush up on skills and learn new ones with a team of professional teaching artists. Finally, Huskers in the Spotlight features concerts from UNL students and alumni who are already making a name for themselves in the music industry. All of the events are offered for free, with the cost admission being simply a desire to learn something new. Lied Learning Online programs are streamed on the Lied Center Facebook page and at liedcenter.org.
