SCIENCE OF SOUND
Led by John Bertles Saturday, March 17 • 10:30 am–2:30 pm No musical or science background required! In this workshop teachers explore how to guide students in creating musical instruments inexpensively from recycled materials, and use the instruments to make connections to science and literacy. First, participants build the instruments–such as an oboe from a straw, maracas and drums from tin cans, or a guitar from a tube and fishing line–while learning the science behind how they work. The sounds of the instruments then become the inspiration for writing and composing musical stories to be performed for an audience. John Bertles is a composer, instrument builder and educator. He has worked in different roles with organizations such as the GRAMMY Foundation, Kennedy Center, Leonard Bernstein Center, New York Philharmonic, New York City Department of Education, and Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble. Curriculum Connections: Visual Arts, Music/Composition, Science, Language Arts Registration deadline is Tuesday, March 13.

POETRY OFF THE PAGE Led by Glenis Redmond Wednesday, April 18 • 4:30–8:00 pm
Some believe that poetry should not only be written and read, but also performed. In this workshop, teachers learn ways to help students use brainstorming, imagery and layering to write powerful and effective poems. Clear and easy poetic structures and formats empower students to expand their imaginations and to cross creative boundaries. Participants examine ways to involve students in memorizing and performing their poems to further communicate the written word with appropriate voice projection, physical stance and gesture. Glenis Redmond is an award-winning performance poet, praise poet, educator and writer from North Carolina. She has traveled domestically and abroad carrying the message of poetry to the masses. Her work has been published in many poetry publications. Curriculum Connections: Drama/Theater, Language Arts, Literature/Poetry, History/Social Studies Registration deadline is Monday, April 16.
