Marc AugĂŠ NonPlaces 1
Create a presence of the past in the present: destinies, actions, thoughts and reminiscences rest on a bass line they mark the position that used to be occupied there by ancient ritual.

Modernity pushes our central secrets, our bass line into the background. Places are saved by passwords. What could be a password - words, feelings, expressions - music.? If depression is a non-place, we loose our memory, our feelings our identity. We are stuck in a non-personal, silent space. We are aware of the place but can’t find a way out from the nonplace we are trapped in. Supermodernity offers us a lot of crowded or empty non-places. They surround us and make us lost. We are not able to start a journey in this non-places as we are not able to get a perspective. We are loosing our character and become puppets in a dark room without walls. 5
There are spaces in which the individual feels himself to be a spectator without paying much attention to the spectacle. As if the position of the spectator were the essence of the spectacle, as if basically the spectator in the position of spectator were his own spectacle.
7
In depression - neither identity, nor relations, nor history really make any sense.
9
A description of the vanishing land is sufficient to evoke the passenger still straining to see it: soon it is only a shadow, a rumour, a noise. This abolition of place is also the consummation of the journey, the traveller’s last pose.
11
Non-places are supposed to be passed through. This is time consuming therefore non-places can represent time and boredom and depression.
13
You more and more wonder where you’re going only because you are less and less sure where you are right now.
