THE EASIEST GUIDE TO changing your last name

AFTER THE WEDDING

Y

our newlywed bliss can quickly come to an end when it comes time to endure the dreaded task of changing your last name. The legal process can often take the romance out of taking your significant other’s last name. If you get yourself organized with the proper documents, the process can be less strenuous, allowing you to continue to revel in your newlywed happiness.

1. GET THE ORIGINAL

3. APPLY FOR A NEW LICENSE

5. UPDATE YOUR BANK

Getting a new license from the local Bureau of Motor Vehicles office requires a few documents, namely your old license, the original marriage license and your new Social Security card. Remember to change your address if you have moved after the wedding.

The easiest way to do this is to visit your local branch in person. Take your new license, your marriage license and your new Social Security card, and ask for your name to be changed on your account. Request new checks, debit cards and credit cards with your new name.

2. REQUEST A NEW SOCIAL

4. CHANGE YOUR LAST NAME

6. UPDATE YOUR LAST NAME

If you visit the Social Security Administration’s website, you can find an application for a change of name here. This is a free service. Print the application, fill it out, and include any required documents. You can either take your application to a nearby Social Security office or mail it in. You should receive your new card with your new last name in approximately 10 days.

When your new Social Security card comes in the mail, meet with your HR manager at work to switch your name over. This includes payroll, 401k, your insurance benefits, stocks etc.

MARRIAGE LICENSE FROM THE CLERK’S OFFICE The original license should come from the clerk’s office where your license was filed. One should automatically be sent to you a couple weeks after the wedding. The original document should have a raised seal and your new last name. Also, it’s a good idea to request copies.

THE VISION Black tie is back in WeddingDay’s Chicago Spring/ Summer digital cover shoot! Sleek, elegant style was the name of the game for this shoot, and the planning team at Unveiled Weddings & Events did not disappoint. Owner and designer Michelle Nikitaras and lead planner Allison Kelley wanted to create a clean, classic look with a slight contemporary touch of vibrant color. Bringing unconventional florals, a show-stopping shaped cake, and textured linens to an overall classic tone, this shoot acts as the perfect inspiration for any bride wanting a modern twist on the traditional. Captured by Tushona Monét Photography, you’ll be pouring over these pictures for all your extravagant planning needs!

WEDDINGDAY 53

THE VENUE The regal elegance of The Allegro Royal Sonesta Hotel was the perfect setting to emphasize this shoot’s modern take on the traditional. From sparkling chandeliers to the carved wooden walls, the Art Deco style details of the Allegro bring out a classic personality all its own, fitting perfectly into the shoot’s classic style. This hotel holds the uniqueness of Chicago by offering a variety of spaces that are perfect for any cocktail hour, ceremony and ballroom reception.

WEDDINGDAY 55

THE LOOK This romantic couple brings a twist of modernization to the traditional bridal style by utilizing more than one look! Elegance Wedding & Evening Wear provided two separate gowns for our classy shoot. The first boasts a sleek silhouette that brings out a traditional flair with its long train and sleeves, complemented with a classic updo with face-framing curls. The second gown’s delicate beading absolutely sparkles, the look elevated by her intricate, cascading hair!

THE FLORALS Love is certainly blooming with these stunning florals! Unveiled Weddings utilized orchids, anthuriums and roses to mix tropical with traditional. The bride’s luscious bouquet is focused on muted tones while the table centerpieces are simpler, but bring in a focus on bright colors. This combination of vibrant and neutral colors creates a gorgeous balance of classic style with a modern twist.
