VENUE:

Zingerman's Cornman Farms Dexter, MI

Both Clarissa and Zak love colors and the fall, so they wanted to be able to combine these things when it came time to plan their wedding. They ended up dreaming up a colorful, fall jewel-toned celebration that we can't get enough of! Their venue is what really solidified their vision for their big day. “We knew we wanted to do a fall wedding, and loved how Zingerman’s Cornman Farms really utilized how beautiful fall is in Michigan to their advantage. We loved how rustic it is and how we could use that to really make our vision for the day come true,” Clarissa shares. We admire the couples' choice of an outdoor wedding during the Michigan fall season and how it allowed their eclectic boho day to shine! To highlight the colors of the big day, Clarissa wore a simple yet elegant gown with ethereal long sleeves to keep out the autumn chill. WEDDINGDAY

WHAT WE

love

Clarissa and Zak didn't have a traditional wedding party, but still wanted their loved ones to be a part of their special day. Clarissa shares, "We invited all of our closest friends to come to the farmhouse early on the day of the wedding to have brunch, mimosas, get ready together and take photos. We really wanted our friends to show up and engage with our day in a way that was most true to them."

2023 STYLE SHOOT EVENT

Whimsically Modern

Our Grand Rapids Photographer Collaborative Style Shoot Event

28

WEDDINGDAY

KARA HANES PHOTOGRAPHY

For the third year in a row, WeddingDay has hosted our Photographer Collaborative Style Shoot Event where photographers from all around the Midwest are invited to gain style shoot experience and grow their connections with other experts in the wedding industry. Working with planner EXL Events Co, lead photographer, Kara Hanes Photography, and Grand Rapids, Michigan venue, CityFlatsHotel, this team was truly top-notch! Take a look at the results from this elegant and whimsical day, and read on to see how you can get involved in our next collaborative style shoot!

The Vision Rather than adhering to a predefined theme, Leigha of EXL Events Co was inspired by a single element: the captivating deep teal hue, specifically in the form of a deep teal velvet linen. With this as their starting point, the team embarked on an exciting journey of experimentation, skillfully blending various elements and bold colors to craft a unique aesthetic that effortlessly marries clean lines with striking features. The result is this enchanting and sophisticated shoot that captivates with its modern, whimsical charm!

KARA HANES PHOTOGRAPHY

The Venue Finding the perfect location for a photoshoot is essential, and the decision to use The Ballroom at CityFlatsHotel Grand Rapids proved to be a remarkable choice. This spacious event space provided ample room for our vision, while the ballroom's exquisite features, including marble columns and contemporary black-framed windows, added a touch of sophistication to the setting. We just love the historic elements that can be seen throughout the entire venue! Leigha shares, "The architecture combined with the modern décor made it feel very inviting."

KARA HANES PHOTOGRAPHY

' The Decor Leigha carefully selected all the rental items used to decorate this elaborate space. Since the deep teal velvet linen was the main piece that inspired this shoot, of course it had to take center stage across both the guest and head tables! With this being a fall shoot, Leigha chose to incorporate various shades of orange— which also complements teal—and neutrals to complete the color scheme. For the décor, many unique shapes were included like the modern square plates from AAYS Event Rentals. Golden accents can be seen throughout the décor, and every color has a moment to shine thanks to Kara Hanes Photography’s keen eye!

32

WEDDINGDAY

The Florals When it came to the flowers, Leigha had one specific idea that she wanted to see visualized and Laura of Truer Design made it a dream come true! The hanging element behind the ceremony and head table is a statement floral piece that brought so much beauty into our shoot. It is a stunning display that is sure to draw eyes to the happy couple on a wedding day! Laura used single stem flowers in the display—an emerging trend—that ranged in color to mimic the changing leaves we see in the fall.

WEDDINGDAY

33

The Looks The two long dresses and the jumpsuit all came from America’s Bride, while the short tulle dress was provided by The Second Dress. It's safe to say we are obsessed with each and every one of them! We love how the different styles each bring a unique feel to the shoot. The first bride's ceremony gown is a satin fit and flare dress that breathes elegance into this opulent space. For her reception look, she donned a daring jumpsuit and skirt overlay complete with beautiful leaf-detailed sleeves, making this a perfect outfit for a fanciful fall shoot! Our second model kept things fun in her short and flirty tulle ceremony dress and then wore a more whimsical lace gown with a classic silhouette for her second look. The talented artists at The Pretty Committee played with the models' hair and makeup styles to create two opposite looks. Our first bride was styled using bolder makeup with a pop of teal on her eyelids and beautiful gold accents adorned in her hair, while the second sported a more classic look with natural makeup using a subtle pearlescent touch and a simple, yet romantic bun.

The Cake Last, but not least, we have to talk about that scrumptious cake! In perfect harmony with the square plates and the shoot's distinctive geometric elements, the three-tiered confection stands out with its sharp edges, setting it apart from conventional wedding cake designs. Its pristine white appearance seamlessly complements the overall aesthetics of the shoot, offering a sense of balance. Yet, far from being plain, this cake boasts delicate lace detailing that echoes the intricate patterns featured on one of the gowns showcased in this shoot! 36

the Old Michigan National Bank building. This gorgeous, historic space offers couples a grand setting with vaulted ceilings, marble columns and a sweeping staircase. It was built in the 1920s and can host up to 200 guests. We also offer a more intimate events space on the ground floor of CityFlatsHotel. Formerly the home of the popular Louis Benton Steakhouse, Events at CityFlatsHotel is an excellent option for smaller weddings (up to 150) searching for a modern atmosphere. It’s also an excellent setting for rehearsal dinners, morning-after brunches and bridal showers. As for our hotel, we are a locallyowned boutique hotel. Our 48 guest rooms are each uniquely designed with eco-friendliness in mind. We joined Choice Hotels Ascend Collection this summer."

WD: MF:

Why should a couple get married here? What attracts couples to your venue? "Our space is the perfect mixture of historic opulence and modern comfort. When couples walk up the grand staircase and gaze into the venue they are in awe of its beauty. We often hear, 'the photos don’t do it justice.' The Ballroom features 1920’s Italian Renaissance styling with elaborate details that include ornate, walnut woodworking, wrought iron railings, marble floors and hand painted ceilings. In addition to our beautiful venues, our location is just unbeatable. Grand Rapids has become a Midwest destination thanks to its award-winning restaurants and breweries, cultural museums and entertainment venues. We are fortunate to be in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids, so, when your guests are not celebrating, they will have plenty to do just outside our door! With the inclusions of linens, chiavari chairs and full place settings, along with in-house food and beverage catering (and everything needed to be dinner-ready), our team is knowledgeable about event execution and timing and assists couples in creating day-of timelines and layouts, which for many are daunting tasks. We offer unlimited

Natural Romance SEA SON : Spring

VEN UE:

Planterra Conservatory West Bloomfield Township, MI

As soon as they imagined dancing the night away surrounded by greenery and under the stars, Lawrence and Justin fell in love with their venue, Planterra Conservatory! Since they wanted to be married on Earth Day, this seemed like the perfect place to say, “I do”. The inspiration for their décor actually came from one of the outdoor terraces they walked through while visiting France. “I knew I wanted to add warmth to the venue space—something that could stand within the venue on its own,” Justin explains. “So, we wanted to incorporate shades of terracotta, blush, dusty rose and taupe along with golds and natural woods.” To tie back to their original Earth Day theme, Lawrence and Justin included some special touches like picnic baskets (for cards and gifts) on each table and mushroom-shaped lamps. WHAT WE

love

Lawrence and Justin both thought they would never have the support they do for their relationship and love for one another. However, despite being from Iraq, much of Lawrence’s extended family showed up to celebrate with them! The happy couple made sure to include plenty of LGBTQ+ touches to their day, from waving pride flags on the dance floor and cutting a rug to some of their favorite LGBTQ+ anthems.

PLANNING TOOL

THE EASIEST GUIDE TO changing your last name

AFTER THE WEDDING

Y

our newlywed bliss can quickly come to an end when it comes time to endure the dreaded task of changing your last name. The legal process can often take the romance out of taking your significant other’s last name. If you get yourself organized with the proper documents, the process can be less strenuous, allowing you to continue to revel in your newlywed happiness.

1. GET THE ORIGINAL

3. APPLY FOR A NEW LICENSE

5. UPDATE YOUR BANK

Getting a new license from the local Bureau of Motor Vehicles office requires a few documents, namely your old license, the original marriage license and your new Social Security card. Remember to change your address if you have moved after the wedding.

The easiest way to do this is to visit your local branch in person. Take your new license, your marriage license and your new Social Security card, and ask for your name to be changed on your account. Request new checks, debit cards and credit cards with your new name.

2. REQUEST A NEW SOCIAL

4. CHANGE YOUR LAST NAME

6. UPDATE YOUR LAST NAME

If you visit the Social Security Administration’s website, you can find an application for a change of name here. This is a free service. Print the application, fill it out, and include any required documents. You can either take your application to a nearby Social Security office or mail it in. You should receive your new card with your new last name in approximately 10 days.

When your new Social Security card comes in the mail, meet with your HR manager at work to switch your name over. This includes payroll, 401k, your insurance benefits, stocks etc.

MARRIAGE LICENSE FROM THE CLERK’S OFFICE The original license should come from the clerk’s office where your license was filed. One should automatically be sent to you a couple weeks after the wedding. The original document should have a raised seal and your new last name. Also, it’s a good idea to request copies.

ADVICE from the PRO TOP 5 TIPS FOR WORKING WITH A RENTAL COMPANY Lauren Krempec, Special Events Designer Burns Special Events

Planning a wedding is a wondrous journey, and each step you take brings you closer to the day you've always dreamed of. Rentals may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you envision your dream wedding, but they play a pivotal role in bringing your wedding design to life. From the elegant chairs where your guests will sit during the ceremony, to the exquisite tableware they'll use to dine at your reception, rentals are the canvas upon which you paint the unique picture of your special day. The linens, lighting, décor items and even the dance floor – all these components work in harmony to create an atmosphere that reflects your style and personality. Lauren Krempec, Special Events Designer at Burns Special Events in Mishawaka, Indiana, understands the pivotal role that rentals play in making your wedding day extraordinary. Her expertise and insights, shared in the following top five tips, will empower you to navigate the world of wedding rentals with confidence and create a memorable event that truly captures your vision! 72

WEDDINGDAY

1.

2.

Start Early

Do Your Homework

Lauren's first piece of advice is to begin your rental preparations as early as possible, ideally starting a minimum of 9 months before your wedding date. Wedding dates can fill up quickly, especially during peak wedding seasons, so securing your rental items well in advance is essential. Starting early ensures that you have the best selection of rental items and prevents any last-minute stress!

Before reaching out to a rental company, Lauren recommends having a clear vision of your wedding theme, colors and style. She recommends starting a Pinterest board so you have somewhat of an idea to show during your appointment. It's also a good idea to browse through a company's inventory beforehand. "Peek on our website before coming in to help us know more of what you are looking for," she shares.

3. Have a Budget When collaborating with a rental company, effective communication is not only about articulating your preferences but also about managing your budget wisely. According to Lauren, it's essential for couples to openly discuss their expectations, financial constraints and any distinct requirements. Maintaining transparency about your budget allows the rental company to offer precise recommendations tailored to your financial plan while still addressing your specific needs. By fostering candid and honest communication, you can ensure that your rental selections align with your budget, helping you create the wedding of your dreams without breaking the bank!

4.

5.

Schedule a Meeting

Trust the Professional

If the rental company has a showroom, Lauren strongly suggests paying it a visit. Seeing the rental items in person allows you to assess their quality, color and condition. "The pictures online are great but to actually put your vision together and see it in person is a complete game changer," she notes. It's also a great opportunity to get inspired and fine-tune your choices!

Finally, Lauren reminds couples to trust the expertise of the rental company. Rental professionals have experience in executing countless weddings and events, so take their advice seriously! She shares, "We are here to help ensure you have the best day of your life and that your vision comes together."

FEATURED WEDDING

The Real Wedding of JAY NE P IC KARD & E U G E N I O V I L L A N U E VA

92

WEDDINGDAY

As much as Jayne wanted a northern Michigan wedding, with Eugenio’s family traveling from Spain to be a part of their big day, she needed to find a centralized venue with a northern Michigan feel. They ended up finding Tandale Nature Barn—a venue near Detroit with a woodsy location and pond on-site—the perfect combination of up north scenery. Even her dress had the feel of nature! As a lover of Delft blue china, Jayne also chose to incorporate some European touches to their big day. Each person’s tableware was collected by Jayne’s parents after she struck out finding a rental company that offered what she was looking for. This unique and personal touch made their tablescapes so special!

“Don’t be afraid to do what feels right to you. We gave dance lessons a try but then decided it really wasn’t our thing...Also, while I love cake, I love ice cream even more. I’ve seen wedding cakes wasted so many times at weddings, but who doesn’t love ice cream in the summertime? We went for a sundae bar instead, and did a ‘first ice cream bite’ instead! These little things made us feel like the day really was tailored for us.” 94

COVER SHOOT

A Ral p h Lauren Romance WEDDINGDAY’S EXCLUSIVE DETROIT COVER SHOOT 102

WEDDINGDAY

LOVE PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATIE VANDERWAL

The Vision As the planner for our Detroit fall/winter digital issue cover shoot, Samantha, owner of 21 Jane Events, was inspired by her admiration for the Ralph Lauren Polo Bar restaurant in New York City. Her visits there sparked an intriguing idea: envisioning what a wedding designed by Ralph Lauren would entail. With the shoot set in the fall/winter season, Samantha seized this opportunity to bring this concept to life, capturing the essence of elegance and style reminiscent of Ralph Lauren's signature aesthetic! LOVE PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATIE VANDERWAL

The Venue The Brooklyn Detroit Bridal Suite served as the ideal setting for our cover shoot, thanks to its warmth and cozy ambiance. While not typically used as an event space, this loft Airbnb space perfectly suited Samantha's design concept. Plus, it is available to be rented by couples for a getting ready space or overnight stay. This makes it an exquisite option for wedding preparations and portraits, just like the ones Love Photography by Katie VanderWal captured in our shoot!

The Florals M. Dawn Floral's designs added an exquisite touch to our cover shoot. The ceremony was a vision of bridal elegance, adorned with romantic candles and a trail of dense white florals along the aisle. Transitioning to the reception, the theme took on a deeply romantic aura, with simple yet dense arrangements of all-red roses. The bouquet, following the classic theme, was envisioned to be petite and elegantly simple, perfectly complementing the overall classic theme! WEDDINGDAY

The Decor The color palette and décor exuded the essence of Ralph Lauren's iconic style. Drawing inspiration from his distinctive designer hues, we explored a fusion of navy and red in our setup. While Ralph Lauren is predominantly known for home and clothing pieces, it was an enjoyable challenge to interpret his signature colors into a wedding! The setup featured a navy blue velvet linen with red and navy plaid napkins and touches of gold throughout the tablescape. Dark brown farmhouse chairs contributed to the chic and sophisticated ambiance! 106

The Looks Two stunning dresses from The Wedding Shoppe were featured in our shoot, both exuding elegance with clean lines and graceful volume. The first dress embraced a traditional and timeless allure with its strapless cut and deep V neckline. The second gown offered a playful yet modern twist on a classic design, harmonizing contemporary elements with timeless fabrics. We can't get enough of those dramatic detachable sleeves! The bride's hair was styled into a classic high bun, adorned with a captivating rhinestone piece, adding a touch of glamour to her overall look. Complementing her hair, the makeup was kept tastefully classic and timeless. The groom donned a striking white tuxedo jacket paired with a classic black bow tie, enhancing the timeless refinement of the entire ensemble!

The Cake The cake, crafted by Homestead Kitchen, was a captivating centerpiece in our timeless cover shoot! A three-tiered, all-white confection, it boasted a distinctive design—an organic shape sweeping across the tiers, bringing to life the modern interpretation of ribbon-inspired bows. Trina, our talented cake designer, skillfully brought forth a unique spin on the envisioned concept, infusing the cake with a sense of fluid movement that added an exquisite visual allure to the entire setup!
