ADVICE PRO from the
5 TIPS FOR WEDDING DRESS SHOPPING
Cayla
Johnson, Social Media & PR Manager // Becker's BridalWedding dress shopping is a thrilling experience filled with anticipation and the joy of finding the perfect gown to say "I do" in. The process allows brides to explore different styles, fabrics and embellishments, envisioning themselves as the radiant center of attention on their big day. However, amidst all the excitement, it's essential to acknowledge that wedding dress shopping can also be stressful. The pressure to find the perfect dress that fulfills both personal preferences and societal expectations can often create anxiety. However, the process doesn't have to be a scary one! We chatted with Cayla Johnson, Social Media and PR Manager of Becker's Bridal who shared her guidance and top five tips for making the journey of finding your dream wedding dress a more enjoyable and stress-free experience!
Do your Research
"It's important to do a little bit of research as you begin your dress shopping journey! Not only is it important to learn about what the industry standard is for items such as pricing and production timelines, it's important to find a shop who you can trust. Reading reviews and asking your friends and family about their own personal experiences can greatly benefit you as you decide where to shop!"
3.
1. 4.
Decide What to Bring
Manage Expectations
"Oftentimes, brides WILL fall in love with a gown while shopping, so managing the expectation of 'I may be leaving with a gown either in hand or on order' will be helpful in terms of financial preparation. It's industry standard to have purchases be final sale, so being prepared to place a deposit is helpful. It's also very helpful to not 'stack' dress shopping appointments because it can quickly feel like work rather than enjoyment/excitement!"
2. 5.
"Because this is often the first 'big' moment of your engagement season, women often feel inclined to include everybody who may be at some point involved in the wedding; however, we recommend the 'less is more' mentality. Bringing the voices and opinions that matter the most to you during the appointment will help keep the appointment focused on what's important to YOU. When there are too many people's opinions, it can become confusing and less enjoyable. Plus, there will be several opportunities to include other ladies along the engagement journey!"
"We recommend bringing some basics to prepare you for the appointment. Photo inspiration from either our website 'wish list' feature, our social media platforms and/or your Pinterest board are super helpful at the start of the appointment. Your stylist can help guide you in finding these styles and deciding whether or not you like them! Also, wearing neutral colored undergarments will help avoid distractions and a hair tie/clip is always helpful, too! Wearing clear deodorant and no body makeup is encouraged as you'll be trying on several sample gowns that one day might become somebody's 'yes' dress."
Decide Who to Bring Trust Yourself
"Our final piece of advice is to trust in yourself! You've been doing it your entire life and it's what has led you to become engaged, in one way or another. When dress shopping, trust yourself! You'll know what gown makes you feel beautiful, bridal, excited and most importantly, YOURSELF!"

Harmony of Spring
A MODERN SHOOT FULL OF COLOR
Inspired by marrying bright and pastel colors as well as classic and modern themes, the creative team for this shoot came together to create a unique spring wedding scene. The colorful mosaic of wooden panels in the ceremony were fashioned to look like stained glass, which inspired the stationery and the color scheme in this shoot. One of our favorite uses of the color palette is in the bespoke graze curated by Thyme and Honey. Planner Ryan Abney says, "The levels, the varied display vessels, and the harmony of the inclusions were the epitome of an elegant yet modern main course." Another modern trend the team included was signature cocktails from Cloud Nine Bartending, complete with cotton candy, floral ice cubes and sugared pear slice garnishes!
WHAT WE love
The dress that the team chose from Becker’s Bridal is the ideal gown to show both elegance and modernity. The silhouette is a classic look that has inspired brides and designers for ages while the floral design is much more modern. And did we mention it has removable sleeves?!

THE EASIEST GUIDE TO
AFTER THE WEDDING changing your last name
Your newlywed bliss can quickly come to an end when it comes time to endure the dreaded task of changing your last name. The legal process can often take the romance out of taking your significant other’s last name. If you get yourself organized with the proper documents, the process can be less strenuous, allowing you to continue to revel in your newlywed happiness.
1.
GET THE ORIGINAL MARRIAGE LICENSE FROM THE CLERK’S OFFICE
The original license should come from the clerk’s office where your license was filed. One should automatically be sent to you a couple weeks after the wedding. The original document should have a raised seal and your new last name. Also, it’s a good idea to request copies.
2. REQUEST A NEW SOCIAL SECURITY CARD
If you visit the Social Security Administration’s website, you can find an application for a change of name here. This is a free service. Print the application, fill it out, and include any required documents. You can either take your application to a nearby Social Security office or mail it in. You should receive your new card with your new last name in approximately 10 days.
3.
APPLY FOR A NEW LICENSE AT THE BMV
Getting a new license from the local Bureau of Motor Vehicles office requires a few documents, namely your old license, the original marriage license and your new Social Security card. Remember to change your address if you have moved after the wedding.
4.
CHANGE YOUR LAST NAME WITH YOUR HR DEPARTMENT
When your new Social Security card comes in the mail, meet with your HR manager at work to switch your name over. This includes payroll, 401k, your insurance benefits, stocks etc.
5.
UPDATE YOUR BANK ACCOUNT INFORMATION
The easiest way to do this is to visit your local branch in person. Take your new license, your marriage license and your new Social Security card, and ask for your name to be changed on your account. Request new checks, debit cards and credit cards with your new name.
6.
UPDATE YOUR LAST NAME ON OTHER MISCELLANEOUS ACCOUNTS
As time goes on, you will remember more accounts that your last name must be changed on. Remember to keep all of the necessary documents within reach to easily change your name.

The Real Wedding of MOLLY
GRUNEWALD & BRUCE HAMBYWith Molly’s job as a wedding photographer, Molly and Bruce knew that choosing the right vendors was the most important thing if they wanted to see their boho disco celebration come to life. “We hired vendors that I trusted could take my vision to the next level. We also hired a team that would allow me to be fully present that day,” Molly shares. “I wanted our day to represent us as best as possible. Which, to us, meant doing things the way WE wanted.” Focused on them and their love story, Molly and Bruce wrote their own vows for their very intimate ceremony and even got married on a family property where Molly spent her childhood summers. Once the ceremony was over, Molly and Bruce loved boating back to their family and friends and dancing the night away!

The Vision
Wanting to pay tribute to the beautiful architecture throughout the city of Detroit, Amanda of ARC Design Studios planned a stunning Art Deco-inspired design for our spring/ summer cover shoot. “I wanted to show that it is possible to blend touches of a historic style with modern trends in a venue that is a totally blank canvas to create something unique,” Amanda shares. As a reflection of the venue’s location, Amanda and her team incorporated bold colors like gold, teal and the Pantone Color of the Year, Viva Magenta, to revive the Art Deco style.
The Venue
Since they were honoring the city, it was important to this creative team to find a venue that was within Detroit’s city limits and not the Detroit metro area. They also wanted a venue that they could dress up how they wanted. Amanda raves, “What I love about The Eastern is its flexibility. There are so many different ways you can set the space, and it gives clients the ability to totally transform it into the style they feel fits their love story.” One of our favorite details is the diversity of the walls from brick to greenery, which made for gorgeous photos captured by Moonrae Photography!
The Florals
Design Quintessentials brought a ton of life into our shoot with her beautiful floral designs! Using a large array of roses as well as snowberry and heather, the colors she chose from the color palette created a lovely contrast to the teal in the tablescape. She also included gold painted blooms to create a more luxurious look. These floral designs added a playful texture to our shoot and were the perfect touch for the spring/summer season!
'
The Decor
You can really see the Art Deco and modern designs combine in the tablescape! Amanda found beautiful 1920’s brass candlesticks and pulled in the bold color palette with multi-colored taper candles. She also included magenta bubble vases to help illustrate the juxtaposition of modern and classic elements. Filling out the tablescape are floral arrangements in gold compotes and feather details, giving a nod to the historic era. We love the glamor of the multi-layered place settings with gold beaded chargers and antique plates. The addition of the menus with gold foil accents elevates the place settings even more!
The Cake & Catering
There isn’t a more perfect cake for the Art Deco era than this stunning creation from For The Love of Sugar Detroit! Not only is it three tiers of beautiful geometric designs in the rich color palette, but it also boasts stunning flowers for some added texture. Surrounding the cake are Neapolitan, red velvet and chocolate cake pieces as well as decadent macarons to reflect flavors that were popular in the Art Deco period.
We all love a champagne tower (which is very Gatsby!) but to take the idea to the next level, Thyme & Honey created a luxurious seafood tower using oysters, caviar, crab, grilled lobster tails and more. Garnished with edible grass, mini Tabasco bottles, watermelon radish and borage blossom–to name a few–each vintage-style coup glass was its own glamorous piece of art that was almost too pretty to eat!
The Looks
The team utilized two gowns that reflected both the traditional Art Deco look and a more modern wedding style. “The Bridal Studio Corktown did an AMAZING job providing the shoot with two beautiful dresses for our models,” Amanda gushes. “Britney is amazing at what she does, and it was wonderful to partner with her in choosing the dresses.” She pulled modern gowns that reflected the symmetry, balance and opulence of the cityscape. For the historic look, the team chose a satin dress with a sleek silhouette and elegant lace design to pair with a classic bun and dramatic eye makeup by Nicole Lynn Artistry. The second dress focused on the intricate beading that could be seen on flapper dresses from the 20s that is still very stylish today. The model’s hair was styled in loose curls that drew attention to her bold lip. The final look was a bold, custom-tailored suit from Tailored Detroit that brings the perfect pop of color to this fun celebration!

The Stationery
“For stationery, working with Ching of The Paper Creation was awesome! I provided a handful of images for inspiration and she went through and tested fonts, layouts, paper types and combinations until we landed on our final set!” Amanda explains. The idea was to play off stereotypical fonts and designs you would see in the age of Art Deco with a modernized color palette. You may notice a skyline on the menu, which calls back to the idea of celebrating the city of Detroit and its architecture.
