Melissa and Seth wanted to put together a glamping wedding with a subtle rainbow color scheme. After finding the perfect venue (which literally included their last name!), everything started to fall into place. Their wedding became a group effort. Missy’s mom planned the wedding, one of Missy’s student’s parents made the cake and cupcakes and Missy and Seth made many other D.I.Y. décor items. The rest of the vendors were decided upon by the quality of service they provided and found on social media!

very young child wants a bounce house at their birthday party, but who says kids get to have all the fun? When Modern Bounce Company opened their new business in Grand Rapids, many vendors reached out trying to secure a style shoot with them. As a result, this carnival-styled scene filled with colorful, whimsical elements like balloons and colorful blooms from Gardenground Floral was born. The attire as well as the makeup by The Pretty Committee were kept light and fun to allow the models plenty of opportunity to enjoy the bounce house to their fullest! And the venue’s high ceilings and large windows made it the perfect spot to host this fun shoot. WEDDINGDAY

For WeddingDay’s third annual Style Shoot Design Contest, our participants had the chance to utilize the two 2021 Pantone Colors of the Year in three different themes to bring their shoots to life. The teams were challenged to pair Ultimate Gray and/or Illuminating with one of our preselected themes: Go Wild, Over the Rainbow and Avant Garde. We would like to thank all the participants as picking a winner was a very difficult decision for our team to make! Along with this year’s winner— who stood out among the rest— our team decided to highlight three other amazing shoots who also blew us away and captured these themes beautifully.

Making us feel as though we were dropped right into an exotic rainforest, this talented team designed a perfect representation of our Go Wild theme, titled “Urban Jungle Glam”, for Follow Your Arrow Photography to capture. Despite discussing all the themes with the creative team, Go Wild was the theme that resonated most with everyone. The team raves, “We loved being able to incorporate the wild theme in every aspect—from live snakes to the details on the cake!” They wanted to add glam to the theme and think the contrast between the faux animal pelts paired with the crystal dinnerware brings that glamorous element. The uniquely designed stationery also gives all the wild vibes!
WEDDINGDAY
35
To unify the shoot's theme with the bride, the team wanted her to look edgy. “We went BIG!” they gush. “Our artists added gold flakes and rhinestones to our bride’s face in an animal pattern and finished the look with a smokey eye.” The gown also had to bring the glamour and edge, and the team felt this beaded one from Here Comes the Dress was the perfect juxtaposition to the bold makeup!
36
WEDDINGDAY
The cake from Steel City Bakery was kept rather classic to not overpower the shoot with too many complex details. Pantone's Ultimate Gray was added in the bottom to represent elephant hide. No jungle would be complete without voluminous plants and colorful blooms! Thode Floral provided moth orchids and anthurium to bring the jungle to life while pampas grass and dried palms brought more of a savannah feel to the shoot. The team also used yellow roses to incorporate Pantone's Illuminating to the look.

With a fun take on our Over the Rainbow theme, Jasmine Norris Photography and Samantha Mitchell Photography brought the colorful vision to life in the form of pastel polka dots. Ultimate Gray and Illuminating peek through in different areas of the shoot; even on the grooms! The team explains, “We loved the fresh colors with the pastel theme and loved that it also showcased the rainbow and the LGBTQ+ community without being the typical bright rainbow colors!”
The Ivory Foundry was the perfect venue for this shoot. With open floor plans to provide space for all of a couple’s guests and large windows to let in plenty of natural light, the team was able to fill it to the brim with light and airy pastel details! The chandeliers overhead helped the team capture the elegant feel they were hoping for, too. As always, it was the décor and details that really brought this shoot to life. The balloon wall, grooms’ bow ties and stunning centerpieces feed into the subtle polka dot theme. We are also obsessed with the unique cigar lounge and champagne flute wall! The four-tiered cake is almost too glamorous to eat. We are especially in love with the pastel watercolor design throughout the cake’s icing and those beautiful fondant flowers. Both the blue and gray suits are gorgeous and look great with the pastel bow ties, but we can all agree the luxurious polka-dot cape on the officiant's suit steals the show. Nothing adds more regality and dramatic flair than a cape!

Theme: Avant Garde
FINALIST
The vision for this shoot came from the traditional use of the venue. Kay from Kay Warner Photography explains, “Avenue 912 is a rock concert venue and I had the idea to create a wedding here that would attract the ‘different’ and ‘off the beaten path’ type of client that frequents this venue. I chose to stay away from anything that was ‘mainstream’ and went beyond any limits of what a traditional wedding looks like.” Every detail of this shoot was carefully chosen, and Kay made sure she got exactly what she wanted no matter how difficult it was to find them. The mirrored aisle, alternative lighting, smoke elements, drapery and unique glassware all bring this theme together. Providing the right amount of contrast, the white invitation suite designed by Your Little Details perfectly matches the theme. We love the extra flair the metallic edging adds to the suite! 40
WEDDINGDAY
The dark cake is so elegant! Kay says, “The cake direction was to mirror the dark makeup of the bride.” We are obsessed with the way the square bottom tier contrasts with the classic round top tiers! “Finding a dress boutique with non-traditional attire was more difficult,” Kay shares. Both of the dresses the team ended up choosing were perfect for the mood they were trying to set. The black dress brings glamour and pushes the limits to what a wedding dress can be while the gray one brings one of the Pantone Colors of the Year into the shoot in a unique way. The faux hawk on the bride and her dark makeup amp up the moodiness! Theme: Go Wild This exotic bohemian beach elopement was inspired by the complications COVID has brought to elopements. “With COVID, couples have had to forfeit their destination weddings and decrease their guest count. This shoot shows couples the perfect way to celebrate as if you are eloping in the tropics,” Brittany from 1945 Event Co. raves. The creative team wanted to bring the tropics to the beach! You can’t have a jungle without plenty of leopard print, bold colors and greenery! The team also wanted to combine multiple textures to the scene to create a fun and inviting environment. One of their favorite designs is the colorful plates and place settings to make an ombré effect as you move down the table.
FINALIS T The dessert table is a highlight of the shoot. Brittany explains, “There were two specialty cocktails available for guests as well as assorted fun colored macarons, candies and the perfect simple beachy cake topped with a tropical flower for the bride and groom to cut.” Silk flowers made up the bouquet and boutonnière. Rich tropical greens and white hydrangeas made up both the bouquet and the floral detail on the triangular arbor. The creative team went a different route with the bridal attire. Instead of a traditional dress, they leaned into the beachy theme with a bathing suit and cover-up! For the bride's makeup and hair, the team kept it fun with waves and bright eye makeup. They also added a flower crown for some of the shots to bring in a more boho feel.

When beginning to plan, Mallory started with smaller details then moved her way out to the larger things, and her work really helped bring her vision to life. She loves to be fun, silly and creative with her couples while also making them feel comfortable with her through the photography process. Her biggest goal is to capture you two for who you really are and have your personality shine through in all of her images. The best part of the job for her is being able to witness and capture those natural moments of pure love on the day of your wedding. We had the opportunity to talk with Kai and learn more about her business and photography process. 62

PLANNING TOOL
THE EASIEST GUIDE TO changing your last name
AFTER THE WEDDING
Y
our newlywed bliss can quickly come to an end when it comes time to endure the dreaded task of changing your last name. The legal process can often take the romance out of taking your significant other’s last name. If you get yourself organized with the proper documents, the process can be less strenuous, allowing you to continue to revel in your newlywed happiness.
1. GET THE ORIGINAL
3. APPLY FOR A NEW LICENSE
5. UPDATE YOUR BANK
Getting a new license from the local Bureau of Motor Vehicles office requires a few documents, namely your old license, the original marriage license and your new Social Security card. Remember to change your address if you have moved after the wedding.
The easiest way to do this is to visit your local branch in person. Take your new license, your marriage license and your new Social Security card, and ask for your name to be changed on your account. Request new checks, debit cards and credit cards with your new name.
2. REQUEST A NEW SOCIAL
4. CHANGE YOUR LAST NAME
6. UPDATE YOUR LAST NAME
If you visit the Social Security Administration’s website, you can find an application for a change of name here. This is a free service. Print the application, fill it out, and include any required documents. You can either take your application to a nearby Social Security office or mail it in. You should receive your new card with your new last name in approximately 10 days.
When your new Social Security card comes in the mail, meet with your HR manager at work to switch your name over. This includes payroll, 401k, your insurance benefits, stocks etc.
MARRIAGE LICENSE FROM THE CLERK’S OFFICE The original license should come from the clerk’s office where your license was filed. One should automatically be sent to you a couple weeks after the wedding. The original document should have a raised seal and your new last name. Also, it’s a good idea to request copies.

Moody & Delicate Romance WEDDINGDAY’S EXCLUSIVE GRAND RAPIDS COVER SHOOT
72
WEDDINGDAY
The Vision This look came together when Special Occasions received a new linen into their inventory and it grabbed everyone’s attention. Co-owner Keri Kujala shares, “The moody mix of purples, violets and mauves feels bold and romantic. I wanted to use this linen and create a mix of romantic and modern in this wedding shoot.” However, to keep the moodiness from overwhelming the shoot, the team opted to add in some soft and delicate items as well!

The Venue Alaska Haus was the perfect modern locale to host our cover shoot. Though it is a vintage building, there are plenty of modern touches around the space! “The Alaska Haus is a picture perfect space with stained glass windows, surrounding balcony and gorgeous built-in bars along with clean and modern architecture,” Keri says. We love how the white walls balance the black accents of this shoot!

The Look Our bride donned two stunning gowns from America's Bride for our romantic shoot. The off-the-shoulder, lace mermaid dress is absolutely stunning! We are obsessed with the long tulle train that brings a sense of regality to her look while still maintaining the modern feel. The ballgown style dress was more of a classic look that complemented the shoot's elegance perfectly. The Pretty Committee styled natural makeup to accent the bride’s beauty while her hair was brought into a casual updo to show off the neckline of the gowns. Two curls were left down to frame and draw attention to her face. 76
WEDDINGDAY
The Florals A multitude of flowers were used to bring this vision to life. Various roses, tulips, anemones and orchids were utilized to make the bouquets, centerpieces and floral arrangements around the shoot. “The mix of these light and dark shades gave us the dramatic colors but kept the aesthetic flowy and delicate. The orchids brought that bold and delicate look,” Keri explains. We love how the white flowers pop off the linens on the guest tables, but the colorful flowers have their moment in the bouquet, especially when held against the bride’s dress! WEDDINGDAY
77
The Cake & Desserts This three-tiered cake from Equinox Pastries and Pops has more detail than what first meets the eye. Obviously, the bottom tier is the most eye-catching with the purple floral design. The top two tiers are all-white with textured fondant that almost gives it a fabric-like appearance, enhancing the total elegance. And the touch of berries and flowers is so chic! Watercolor frosted cookies were added as a fun bite-sized dessert option.

The Decor The shoot's chic head table sports a floral patterned linen— the one that drew everyone’s attention—and the guest tables are adorned with plum and lavender linens. All the tables are set with gray and silver tableware that bring an air of elegance into the shoot, while the candles mounted in black candle holders add a crisp and chic look!

The S tationery The stationery designed by The Lettering Grove brought in even more romance to the shoot with the use of torn edges and soft, romantic fonts. We love the addition of the lavender ribbons and delicate wax seals, too!
